Nothing new from Liebman

It has now been over 2 weeks since he said he would get back in a week. I'm not holding my breath. However, the bogus edits have also pretty well stopped. Baseball Bugs

Actually, there was one or two a couple of days ago that were Liebman-esque (at least the username was), but they didn't seem too bad, so let them be. I can't remember what the name was but they were on one of the biggies (like DiMaggio). But it's died down considerably. Maybe the range blocks helped. And that it's finally getting thru the dense cranium that the unsourced changes will always get reverted. No wait, that would imply common sense. Babel "0" level userboxes not considered useful?

See User:UBX/Userboxes/Non-ISO Languages to see one example. I think the idea is that saying you don't know a language has no use to Wikipedia. It's not the userbox so much as the category that's not considered useful. I mean, if you want something translated from French, you're not going to think, "Let me start by looking for people that don't speak French at all." Humor value, yes. Practical value, nil. Yeah, "humor value" is plain, and is prob. the main reason for most non-ISO userboxes. On my own subpage User:Alarob/languages, I have some "0" level ISO (i.e., "real") language boxes that indicate that I have spent some time studying a language, but have not attained even rudimentary proficiency (Arabic, for instance). It only has value from the "getting to know you" side, which is the point of perhaps a majority of userboxes. In the case of the non-ISO boxes, I could see someone who lived in, say, San Diego, using a "0" box for California English to indicate that they don't talk like a valley girl. Trivial, I grant you. But I'd suggest basing the decision on whether or not anyone is linking to them. So having said all that, if no one's linking to ap-en-0, I have no complaint with -- well, were you planning to delete it? -- Rob C. alias Alarob 14:35, 24 July 2007 (UTC)

My only concern is the categories, and did just enough to get them off Special:Wantedcategories, based on what's been done with similar stuff. I'm not an admin or anything, so I've done what all I can. Even if I were, I wouldn't delete userboxes. Heck, I've created a few myself. s/Theocracy/Theocracies/

Hi. I noticed the category rename. While it makes sense for many of the pages, the Chalcedon Foundation is definitely not a theocracy, but is pro-theocracy for some definitions of theocracy (ie. that politicians should follow the Bible, but, IIRC, not that the state should actually be ruled by the church). Anyway, I was wondering what your thoughts were as to what should be done about it, since you're presumably more familiar with the reasons for the category rename than I am.

It was part of one of my side projects, reducing the Special:Wantedcategories backlog. There was no Category:Theocracy, so I replaced it with an existing category, Category:Theocracies. It sounds like maybe the category should be removed altogether? Doesn't matter to me one way or the other; I don't watch the articles like that which I "fix". Otherwise my watchlist would be insanely longer than it already is. So whatever you do, I won't know. As long as another redlink category isn't created... :) -Ebyabe 15:51, 25 July 2007 (UTC)

AutoWikiBrowser Edits

Hey there,

I have seen that you use Wikipedia:AutoWikiBrowser to perform edits. My understanding during the past 3 years that I participate in Wikipedia is that when using AutoWikiBrowser, one should take extra care to make sure that one actually understands what kind of change one is going to perform, and not change the meaning of a text.

Since the last weeks I have observed that you performed e.g. category changes with AWB - in some cases to a category that may sound similar to somebody who is not familiar with the topic, but which are actually not at all identical. In case these categories work as descriptors for living people, this kind of misinformation may reach a certain level of inconvenience.

So far I have solved the problem simply by doing a revert - no harm taken, we all make a mistake from time to time. And I also left a note about it in the history - exactly why I did the revert, and how the categories differ.

But further observation leads me to the conclusion that by the way you use AWB, you do not see the message in the history, but simply perform the (wrong) category change over and over again - with the speed and power of an automated tool.

That is why I leave you this message.

That's ok. I don't remember seeing that building in my perambulations of the district. Good pic, though. From your description in the picture, you're right, it's iffy whether it's in the historic district. No, no problem at all, and I completely understand the OCD ref (side effect of having a therapist parent). I am (very slowly) working on a slimmed-down version of the enormous, inert mass of the current Florida article, which is way too big to be useful, and filled with lame and trivial silliness. Well, I hooked you up with a pair of NRHP sites in Sebring—Harder Hall and Kenilworth Lodge, to which I added photos yesterday. I also took pictures of the train station, courthouse, and fire station, but the existing pics were better. I also took a couple of pics of Sebring Circle (the downtown Historic District), but they don't really add much context. (They all look like a park, because the circle essentially is a park.) :\ (I know Newnansville is a ghost town, and your contributions to the article, which is why I chose it as my example to the dusty, decaying nature of the WikiProject.) I suspected as much, regarding Newnansville. :) It's actually one of the few of the Registered Historics that I did more than stub, partly b/c it's close to where I used to work up there. U.S. Roads Assessment Categories

Was there a reason that you the Disambiguation, Template, and Category classes to the WP:USRD assessment? We really didn't see the need for them. I was working on clearing the Special:Wantedcategories backlog, and Category:Category-Class U.S. road transport articles was one of the ones on it. After creating it, I figured, why not create the others? I just think that having the separate categories helps to keep track of things better, rather than have them lumped into a non-article category. Basically, it's the OCD in me. On a related note your edit to the {{tl:football}} template has left a large gap underneath the banner as visible on the List of Aston Villa captains page. Perhaps a rogue space? Sorry about the first. As regards the space, though, it apparently wasn't me. I reverted back to before my changes, and it's still there. On your photolist of NRHP sites in Brooksville, Florida you mentioned soms doubts about Florida Heritage.com's coverage of the William Sherman Jennings House;

I just came from that area this afternoon, and I can tell you for a fact that they didn't do this. Hm, I think I must have been confused when I wrote that. I looked again at the pictures I took and the one on flheritage, and they do appear to match. It's just the angle at which the flheritage pic is at. I may have been mixing it with the Saxon House, which has no signage or anything, and was a guess based on the address listed on the Register and where it was. Comparing pics, that was right too. If you took more pics, though, do please upload them to WikiCommons and add to the bounty! :)

State Parks

I am stealing from List of Pennsylvania state parks, for MN parks so "borrow" away. :) I got lucky in that MN only has 72 parks, FL has 156, Ugh! The map alone took me a few hours, but it really adds shine. My one tip would be to do as much as possible with a spread sheet. I might try to add pics, but dang its a lot of work and it makes the lists big, see List of Minnesota amphibians as an example of what I have tried. -Ravedave 02:59, 22 August 2007 (UTC)

If you're working on Pennsylvania state parks, you might like to know that many parks can be identified in the USGS named places list [2] by having "Park" in one column and the name of the state in another column ("PA"), and probably have "State Park" in the name. I used 'grep' to filter out most state parks from the thousands of parks in MN. Geographic coordinates are given in two formats. (SEWilco 16:42, 22 August 2007 (UTC))

Yeah, the wikistress was piling on man. I guess it really goes back to June and my RfA but everything that has happened since then has really frustrated me. Plus, I haven't had the time or money to go on a historical photo tour, which I do enjoy so much. I haven't written any articles lately, I guess it has been almost a week now. Mostly sticking to minor edits and a few discussions, just trying to relax a bit ya know? I have done a bit of work on Illinois state parks, we still have a ton to go, but it is getting there. All of our state parks have no admission fees. The state gouges us elsewhere, taxes mostly, really, really high taxes. So high, that when you come in from Indiana you will see signs along the Interstate to the tune of "Last exit before high taxes." Haha. IvoShandor 00:03, 28 August 2007 (UTC)

forbidden pictures

Hi Ebyabe,
I'm a french user who try some time to contribute a little bit to the english Wikipedia (as much as I can with my bad english level), and I would like to undersand something about these WP's laws : why a picture could be exist in an article but not in an other one ? Did the "fair use" be only forbidden in actor's article ?

Hey! It's kinda tricky. The picture that was in the article was of Ritchson as Aquaman. That would be appropriate for an article about Aquaman. But for an actor's page, it has to be of the actor not playing any part, but as themself. It took me a while to figure out, and I've had pics that I uploaded in the past deleted for those reasons. That's why I don't bother adding celebrity pics anymore, as it's usually more hassle than it's worth. I just upload pics I take myself of historic buildings and such now. If he makes further "edits", I won't change them today, b/c of 3RR (even though it's vandalism). I've reported Chadsplace so he can hopefully be blocked like all of Ron's other socks.
