Wrong photo with wrong name

Sorry, but your photo of the University of Central Florida school branch on the DSC campus was removed from the article, Daytona State College.   • The featured picture of the Union Stock Yards is not a picture of an NRHP-listed place. Only the gateway to the former stockyard is NRHP-listed, and I believe that the gateway is not included in the pic. If it is in the background somewhere, the caption should describe where it is; otherwise i think the pic should not be used.
  • I am not really enamored of the leading pic of a generic NRHP historic plaque. I would not want to add to the incorrect idea some might have that all NRHP-listed places have that plaque. I concede that using that plaque photo, which seems non-specific to any one NRHP place, serves a certain role like an NRHP logo, in its location near the top of the portal. Is there any other logo that could serve the same role? I think the overall NPS logo would not be appropriate though.
  • As a reviewer, I am hampered by a mental block that i have in not understanding what a portal is supposed to do, so I don't really have a clear perspective on what the leading little article should accomplish. But, I would estimate that the first mini-article there needs copy-editing. Should it be defining what the sport of NRHPing is? Or what wikipedia's role with respect to historic sites in the U.S. is, like how many sites already have been photographed? If the mini-article is to describe what is the NRHP program of the U.S., then, out of the first two paragraphs, I would prefer for the first sentence of the second paragraph to lead the mini-article.
  • The following passage in the 2nd paragraph seems incorrect or inconsistent: "Some states, however, might have state or local laws that become effective when a place is listed on the National Register. In contrast, a local historic district often has enabling ordinances at the municipal level that restrict certain kinds of changes to properties and thereby encourages those changes that are sensitive to the historic character of an area." What is the contrast that is alluded to? Local zoning ordinances sometimes specifically key on whether a place is in some local register and also on whether it is NRHP-listed, and they can specify the same or different types of reviews for any changes to properties of the two types. I think the restrictions on NRHP-listed properties would pretty much amount to being "enabling ordinances at the municipal level", so I don't understand what is the contrast. It is hard to characterise all possible types of local zoning laws here, of course.

Gee, has it been that long since I started this thread? Let's see about getting back into the swing of things.

Stock Yard photo: found one for the actual gate already uploaded, changed on the portal
NRHP plaque: I see the point, but it does have the benefit of being generic, and not favoring one state or territory. I'm not sure what other options are available, either. There doesn't need to be any sort of photo, but I think it adds some visual interest, moreso than a block of text, imho.
Portal purpose: You know, I've wondered about that too. Lets look at some other portals and see whassup. I'll see what I can find out.
2nd paragraph question: I'm not sure on this one.
More articles/bios/photos/etc: Always we'll need more, they can always be added. But what's enough before it could be considered feature-worthy?
There are currently 9 18 articles, 26 pictures, 5 6 biographies and 3 15 panoramas. Articles are relatively easy to add. Bios are harder. I know I'm not as up on that stuff. And panoramas, well, they're not always categorized as such. I added what I could find. Killearn Plantation

A while back, you redirected Killearn Plantation Archeological and Historic District to Alfred B. Maclay Gardens State Park. It seems to me that the Killearn Plantation area is much larger (it is listed as having an area of 1,184 acres in the NRIS) than the listed 28-acre area of the Alfred Maclay Gardens. Could the state park itself be much larger than the gardens area? Any information you can provide to clarify things would help. Thanks. --Polaron | Talk 20:43, 12 October 2009 (UTC)

I double-checked the park's official page, and the area is actually 1,176 acres. I changed the article to reflect that. According to this, the park and the district are basically the same thing. Don't know why there's still a 8 acre discrepancy, though. I did the redirect way back when, while I was stubbing all the Florida NRHPs. NRHP listings in Hernando County, Florida

I just added the last image for the National Register of Historic Places listings in Hernando County, Florida article. So unless another NRHP site is added to the list, you shouldn't have to worry about adding one. ----DanTD (talk) 01:48, 28 November 2009 (UTC)

Suffolk Resolves House

Hello. Did you just

  • add nrhp_type = nrhp, and
  • delete a blank line from the subject,

and nothing else?

If so, I ask "why"? nrhp-type defaults to "nrhp", so it's not necessary -- none of the examples in the template documentation use it. Elkman doesn't use it, and he's certainly the authority on {{Infobox NRHP}}. I raise the question because it makes me uncomfortable to have something done differently -- if it became an NHL, not entirely unlikely -- somebody marking up the infobox with the NHL number and date without realizing that type 1 was already in use would run into the sort of confusion that might be hard to track down.

Also the (diff) didn't work well -- it red-lined the whole infobox, so I had to visually compare the whole infobox line by line to see what you changed. I'll probably just trust you after now (although you're a new name on my part of the NRHP, it appears I might be somewhere near you in contribution in five years or so...) but how many editors who don't know you are going to have to look at how many changes that appear to have no meaning?

My bad. I probably should have put more of an explanation in the summaries. I was trying to clear the Category:NRHP infobox needing cleanup. I realized that one of the parameters causing articles to appear in that category was simply having the nrhp_type field blank. So I was going thru with AWB and adding the default value of "nrhp". Also did some other minor cleanups (adding refnums, wikifying architectural styles, etc). It looks like someone else has been working overtime after I finished, though. When I stopped yesterday, there were around 1900 articles in the category. Now there's less than 700. Hope that explains, and apologies for the confusion. :( --Ebyabe (talk) 02:55, 19 January 2010 (UTC)
Thanks for the explanation. A thought: Wouldn't it be easier and, perhaps, better to just remove them from the category and change the bot that's adding that category? A quick random check shows five out of five NRHP infoboxes that are not HD, NHL, etc. are blank. Actually, after I did most of them, I discovered that just removing the nrhp_type parameter seemed to also work. The thing is, the articles are being added to that category for several reasons, especially missing reference numbers. I was just going the easy route, and clearing out the ones showing up b/c of the nrhp_type parameter being empty. That way, what was left would be ones with significant problems. But I think others have been working to clear the category out, so I think the problem's mostly been fixed, doncha know. :) --Ebyabe (talk) 23:02, 19 January 2010 (UTC)
I was going to start a new section, but this section seems fitting enough haha. A blank or missing nrhp_type doesn't directly control anything about how the infobox puts articles into the cleanup category. If the infobox doesn't have a reference number, then the code checks to make sure it's not a CP or an NHLDCP, and if it's not, the article is put into the cleanup category. There is no other reason for putting the article in that category. When I installed the code originally, I made a mistake, and it put ALL articles with the infobox in the category, making it hard to root out which articles ACTUALLY needed cleanup, so it may have been confusing. The articles that you were editing to remove or default nrhp_type to "nrhp" were only disappearing from the category because they weren't actually in the category haha. They still showed up because the job queue hadn't gotten around to taking them out. When you edited them (even if you had done a null edit), they no longer showed up in the category, so it may have appeared that you were doing the right thing when you weren't.
My main point in coming here was to thank you for helping out; I noticed a few minutes ago that you were working at the same time I was but on a separate part of the alphabet. I looked at your contrib history, and it seems you have the hang of it now. I'm essentially using Elkman's query to find the refnum and any other relevant information and possibly cleaning up the article a bit in the process. I'll be working on it over the next few days/weeks. I had stopped for a while after that error because like 16,000+ articles were in the category and I had to wait for it to clear out automatically. Actually, this was killing two birds. I was working on the Florida articles in general with missing coordinates, and I've been able to add them to Florida NRHP articles and clean them up too. Then I've been working from the end of the cleanup category backwards. I may take a bit of a break, since the category's down to about 200. And thank you back for your efforts. :)
You know, I forgot about Elkman's query. Gaah! I've been using the NPS Focus query page, which has been working quite well. You can also search by refnum in the Advanced Search area, which was useful in certain instances. Cheers! :) --Ebyabe (talk) 18:44, 24 January 2010 (UTC)

It's prettier when the ground is green instead of white. What's especially problematic is that I'm trying to get some mound pictures; while the Enon Mound (pictured) is quite easy to see when snowcovered, I've been told by the owner of the Carl Potter Mound that it's almost impossible to find if you don't know where it is, even in good weather, so there's no point in trying now. However, the mounds make it a lot harder to get fully-illustrated sites — it took months of work to find the Carl Potter Mound, and without it I wouldn't have a chance of getting Champaign County fully illustrated; I live just one county away from Union County, but I don't have a chance at fully illustrating it. There are zero online sources for the mound and mound group in Logan County; if I didn't live in the county, I wouldn't have had a clue how to find them. Historic Florida pictures

Hi, Many thanks. Glad you bought the book as I had to do. I got tired of paying a quarter a day late fees at the library. Your photos will spur me on to do some articles. It's much easier to do them with a good picture or two. I finally got a digital camera and have taken a few local pictures and hope to do more. Ponce De Leon Boutique Hotel

I keep watch on the category for broken infoboxes, adding the appropriate information or replacing the infobox where necessary, and the Ponce De Leon Boutique Hotel appeared there recently. It doesn't appear to be listed on the NRHP separately, however it could be contributing to the Downtown St. Petersburg Historic District. I have no way to confirm this, though. I couldn't find any info about it being a contributing property. Considering its age and location, it's likely. But without references... I changed the infobox to the Historic Building one. Oddly, St. Pete is one of the few places in the state I've found that actually puts up contributing property plaques in their historic districts. National Register of Historic Places listings in Citrus County, Florida

Happy to pitch in on Florida. You're usually right on top of the new listings there (as is Daniel Case with New York's listings). When I saw that you hadn't added the new one in Citrus County, I assumed that you were preoccupied with holiday weekend festivities. Historic districts category

Hi, Ebyabe. I noticed you have begun going through Category:Historic districts in the United States with AWB. While I'm thrilled that you're helping, I've noticed some things you weren't doing exactly right. For one, if the national category is on the page hard-coded (in the bottom where all the other categories are), it needs to be removed in favour of the state cat. On several articles I've just edited, you neglected to look down there I guess. Also in one (though I think this may have been a simple mistake), you added a second locmapin parameter to the infobox when there was one already there. No biggie. Masonic Temple of Citrus Lodge No. 18, F. and A.M.

I created this article today and wanted to let you know that I had to tweak the title to met wikipedia requirements: No. instead of #, drop "The" and drop an apostrophe that didn't belong between Cirtus and Lodge. BTW do you have any pictures of this building. It's a block west of the old courthouse. Also many thanks for finishing the county cats for me on Category:Historic Florida architecture 1989 AIA survey. It's something I've been thinking about for awhile and I'm not up on AWB. NRHP Listings in Volusia County

Hey, Ebyabe. I have a question for you regarding the standard NRHP plaques commonly displayed on buildings listed with the Register. Do buildings that are Contributing Structures within a National Historic District, but which are not individually listed in their own right get to display the typical "This property has been placed on the National Register..." plaques? I ran across seven structures displaying these plaques for which I haven't been able to find any corresponding information regarding their listing. All structures fall within the given boundaries of the South Beach Street Historic District in Daytona Beach, so I am assuming they likely are Contributing Structures, but I wasn't aware that the plaques would be available to buildings not listed on their own. Hey! In my travels, I have seen plaques like that. At first I used to shout at the plaques, "You're not on the Register, you're just in the district," or words to that effect. Wonder if that's why I get those odd looks. :) Don't know if there's a rule, per se, but it does happen. More rarely, I have found plaques explicitly stating that a building is a contributing property, like this, this and this. Much of the time the buildings have no plaques at all. Go figure.

Monticello

You recently reverted an addition to the Monticello, Florida article. While it's true that you'll never find sources for that statement, beyond a newspaper clipping possibly mentioning businesses closing down early, the statement is true. Is there a way to get that back in there, since the aticle doesn't have much beyond the demographics? Nolelover 19:13, 28 September 2010 (UTC)

It should really be sourced somehow. More about the history of Monticello would be nice to add to the article, though. This link is a good start for info. Thank you, thank you, and again, thank you. :) See, the thing is, I intend to get photos of all the NRHPs and state parks in Florida. I'm close to half way there. I also check the requested photos and if it's not too much of a detour, I add such to my list. Now that the weather has gotten cooler and less muggy, I'll likely be on the road most weekends. Like yesterday, I got partly in one of my favorite parts of the state, the Panhandle. Now I have over 360 photos to sort thru. Here's my kooky circuitous route. The whole mess of stuff I'm intending to photograph is here.
By the way, I'm hoping to knock out the counties of Sarasota and Manatee (and maybe Pinellas and Hillsborough too) by the end of the month. At this rate, I may be done before next summer. Then what will I do with all my free time? :) --Ebyabe (talk) 23:59, 11 October 2010 (UTC)

Passing through

Hi, I wish I had more notice of your passing through at Thanksgiving time. I see by your images you were at IndianRiverside Park, which is under 2 miles from my house as the crow flies, more by road. Were you able to get pix of Trapper Nelson's or the Gate House. Trapper Nelson's is accessible through the State Park. The Gate House is probably not visible from the road. It's all good. I didn't get Trapper Nelson's, as I didn't want to pay the $20 admission, which is why I didn't get Bonnet House either. Category:African archaeology stubs

Hi - is there any reason why you created Category:African archaeology stubs without a proposal? It was not part of the recently proposed split of Category:Archaeology stubs, as it was unlikely to meet the required threshold for a stub category. as such, it is quite likely that it will bee listed for deletion at WP:SFD. In future, if you wish to create a stub category, please propose it first at WP:WSS/P so that it may be vetted for its potential size and use, as explained at WP:STUB and at the top of aall stub categories.
