Clarification[edit]

Hello. I recently added my organisation under the 'FE' section of 'List of Schools in Islington' as I represent a FE provider in the heart of Islington. This information is correct and factual, it is not promotional in any way. Please may I re-add my entry? LondonScreenAcademy (talk) 22:15, 1 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

LondonScreenAcademy, your username suggests that you are a promotional and shared account, so I cannot let you add it without coming to that conclusion. Sorry! Ed6767 (talk) 22:17, 1 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

RedWarn 13 Dev[edit]

RedWarn 12 is working great on my account! How do I install RedWarn 13 dev beta? Thanks. --Stay safe, PRAHLADbalaji (M•T•AC) This message was left at 23:25, 1 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Prahlad balaji, it's a development version so you'll get it when rev13 comes out - use of the MAT and alert on change is proving VERY useful right now :p Ed6767 (talk) 23:27, 1 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
What's the "MAT"? --Stay safe, PRAHLADbalaji (M•T•AC) This message was left at 23:30, 1 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

mass disruptive editing warning: Insurrection Act[edit]

regarding your message on https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:65.60.210.54 : I believe my edits were constructive. I moved a reference to clarify which part of a sentence was covered by the citation, and added a link for the George Floyd protests to a sentence that referenced it. You can review my contributions page to verify that. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Contributions/65.60.210.54 65.60.210.54 (talk) 00:24, 2 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Information icon It may not have been your intention, but one of your edits may have introduced material that some consider controversial. Due to this, your edits may have been reverted. When adding material that may be controversial, it is good practice to first discuss the changes on the article's talk page before making them, to gain consensus over whether or not to include the text, phrasing, etc. If you believe that the information you added was correct, please initiate that discussion. Thank you. CommanderWaterford (talk) 13:31, 2 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

About Redwarn[edit]

I had installed your script earlier but it brought me some problems. If you can help I will appreciate Get a smart idea (talk) 18:55, 7 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Get a smart idea, yes, I'm happy to help! I can see you haven't used it since very early versions since you don't have a RedWarn configuration file in your userspace. Do you want to install it again and let me know what issues you're having? Ed6767 talk! 18:59, 7 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Ed6767 It’s really slowing up my browser and disabling my other scripts. I don’t know why. I would really love to use it. Get a smart idea (talk) 19:12, 7 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Get a smart idea, what browser are you using? Ed6767 talk! 19:13, 7 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Ed6767 I have tried it on Safari, Firefox and Chrome on on my IPad which am using right now. Get a smart idea (talk) 19:16, 7 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Get a smart idea, I think the issue may be because of your common.js - you have lots of scripts installed and I've noticed that even on my rig here your common.js slows things down considerably - RedWarn itself shouldn't interfere with any other scripts - you may want to try manually cleaning it up and seeing if RedWarn works better then? I am dissatisfied that somebody continues to remove factual information about my personal life. That is inappropriate PaulaBarker (talk) 20:12, 7 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

PaulaBarker, the reason that is due to our very strict policies on living people (see WP:BLP) - we can't add info without a reliable source to back it up, especially if it is personal. Apologies. Ed6767 talk! 20:15, 7 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
There is nothing unusual about a listing that says I have two children and am married! Somebody had no right to remove this in the first place. That information has been on this page for months. PaulaBarker (talk) 20:21, 7 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
PaulaBarker, you do not own your Wikipedia page. Wikipedia is the encyclopedia anyone can edit - everyone has the full right to remove that if they want to, as long as they explain why, and it was explained as a failure of WP:BLP, WP:COI and WP:RS. The time that information has been on a page for pays no relevance to why it was removed. Ed6767 talk! 20:26, 7 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I don’t believe I do own the Wiki page but I think I am entitled to correct factual information about myself i.e that I am married. There is no material reason for somebody to edit that out. PaulaBarker (talk) 20:31, 7 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
PaulaBarker, yes there is, and this has been explained to you multiple times. Why are you so fussed over such a trivial fact? You could easily provide a source per WP:RS and it's likely the change will stay. Ed6767 talk! 20:33, 7 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
It is not trivial to me. Please do explain what source you think I need to provide to prove I am married and have two children! PaulaBarker (talk) 20:35, 7 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
PaulaBarker, I will not discuss this further as I suspect you are WP:NOTHERE, past this on your own page. Thanks for your time. Ed6767 talk! 20:37, 7 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Just a RedWarn suggestion...[edit]

Hi Ed6767, great job on RedWarn. I really like it and would use it but for one thing—the rollback AGF and the rollback vandal have switched places. To me, I just instinctively use the same pattern, so for the time being I stuck with Twinkle. I really want to use RedWarn, since it's so much cleaner and doesn't add everything to your watchlist and it doesn't open the talk page and... well, there's lots of advantages. I know that RedWarn is really customizable, so can you tell me how to swap the icons? Thanks! Thanoscar21talk, contribs 14:14, 8 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Thanoscar21, thanks for the suggestion! At the moment, there is no way to switch the orientation in your preferences (I'm likely going to add this later) - for now, you can use this script I made for you, which switches rollback vandalism with rollback AGF - User:Ed6767/rwAGFSwap.js -- add it to your common.js or click "Install" with the script installer enabled. Ed6767 talk! 17:00, 8 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Why you removed my changes?[edit]

Hi Ed6767, please tell me the reason of this, I used a reliable and clear source in my changes in Wifi, I mentioned information about OFDM patent using a http://www.wilan.com/ and public resources as a reference.

Amany N Mohamed (talk) 20:59, 8 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Amany N Mohamed, hello! Please be aware that patents are primary sources and cannot be used in that way - but see if you can find an article that mentions this, then you can use that as a source. Thanks! Ed6767 talk! 21:01, 8 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your help, Please check this change Wi-LAN Inc. 's WiFi patents were filed by Dr. Michel Fattouche and Dr. Hatim Zaghloul on March 27, 1992 which is 4 days prior to the patents of CSIRO above Can I add this? Amany N Mohamed (talk) 21:11, 8 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Keeping the discussion open on Talk:Mark Wahlberg[edit]

Hey there! Thanks for helping to start the discussion on the subsection title on Mark Wahlberg's page. I was wondering if you would be willing to undo your close and open the discussion back up, however?

I might be misunderstanding how discussions are usually closed, but the page on closing discussions says discussion should be closed when "the discussion is stable" or there is consensus, and that they usually should be closed by an uninvolved editor. I'm not sure if there was consensus and it's only been a day since the discussion was open, which I think is much too soon to close.

Let me know what you think. Thanks! - Whisperjanes (talk) 21:31, 8 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

RedWarn opt-out[edit]

Hey, Ed6767, could I please not get any RedWarn messages? Thank you. NASCARfan0548  22:24, 8 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Please will you stop spamming users with your personal interests. Xxanthippe (talk) 22:34, 8 June 2020 (UTC).[reply]
NASCARfan0548 - noted - and Xxanthippe, I think you're mistaken. These aren't my "personal interests". Everyone I've sent a talk page message to tests my counter-vandalism tool, RedWarn. I give people the option to opt-out of communications if they do not wish to receive any, as you see here. If a user uninstalls RedWarn, or opts out, they are automatically removed from the list Ed6767 talk! 22:47, 8 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Request[edit]

Could you please tell me the reasons of removing? Thanks Amany N Mohamed (talk) 15:34, 9 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Amany N Mohamed, they were reverted as they didn't have reliable sources. You might want to read through WP:RS Ed6767 talk! 17:52, 9 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Question[edit]

Hi, I reviewed the historical part of Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing [2] and it is clear that there is a lot of information without sources or references so I need a clear reason why did you remove my additions although I mentioned many sources to prove Please let me add this information which confirmed by reliable resources moreover, I mentioned information about Dr. Hatim Zaghloul's patents and it is a clear fact from a lot of resources and references. Thanks Amany N Mohamed (talk) 20:05, 9 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

About your suggested use of the MAT to send Discretionary Sanctions notices[edit]

You cannot use automated scripts to send those. This means that the DS notice has to be manually inputted. It does not mean that scripts cannot send notices, it just cannot be done automatically (like with Twinkle). In fact, if you were to try, an abuse filter would block that. For these reasons, I removed "sending sanction notifications" from your list of examples on User:Ed6767/redwarn/help/Multiple_Action_Tool. See this page for more information. Prahlad balaji, sure, just keep the /QTPACKS redirect on the help page as it's used by RedWarn - maybe the new one's could appear as "uncategorized"? RedWarn appends the text to the end of the page when publishing a new one. Ed6767 talk! 21:09, 10 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

the feminist movement page is wrong[edit]

CHINA IS THE BIGGEST COMMUNIST SOCIETY IN THE WORLD ---

THEIR FIGHT FOR FEMINISM IS ABSOLUTELY NOT REPRESENTATIVE OF THE FIGHT FOR FEMINISM AROUND THE WORLD.

MAJORITY OF HUMANS ON EARTH LIVE IN DEMOCRATIC SOCIETIES... NOT CHINA.

FEMINISM BEGAN IN WESTERN COUNTRIES AND IT CONTINUES TO BE ADVANCED BY THEM.

BY FOCUSING SOLELY ON THE COUNTRY OF CHINA ON THIS PAGE, YOU ARE MISREPRESENTING THE GREATER MOVEMENT.

IF YOU FEEL IT IMPORTANT TO HAVE A SECTION ON CHINESE FEMINISM ON THIS PAGE, PUT IT AT THE BOTTOM.

THE INTRODUCTION TO THIS PAGE NEEDS TO BE UPDATED TO INCORPORATE THE CORRECT ASPECTS OF THE FEMINIST MOVEMENT.

WHAT YOU HAVE NOW IS POORLY WRITTEN AND INCORRECTLY REPRESENTS THE MOVEMENT, ITS PHASES, AND ITS GOALS.

THE FEMINIST MOVEMENT IS A WORLDWIDE MOVEMENT AND THE LANGUAGE IN THE INTRODUCTION SHOULD REPRESENT THAT.

WIKIPEDIA PLAYS AN IMPORTANT ROLE IN SHAPING THE NARRATIVE AND WITH WHAT YOU HAVE NOW IT IS NOT CORRECTLY DOING THAT.

Your wikitext looked fine. I wasn't able to figure out why adding apparently good wikitext would interfere with the formatting of text that appeared higher on the page. If you find out, leave me a note on my user talk page. --Metropolitan90 (talk) 21:10, 11 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Metropolitan90, I genuinely have no clue, unless it was some weird bug with the visual editor or WP:REPLYLINK. Thanks again! Ed6767 talk! 21:14, 11 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Prahlad balaji, development versions are ones where I have my IDE open and am conducting vital tests. You won't get dev versions until they're released. There's usually not too long between the first dev edits for a version and its release. Ed6767 talk! 03:13, 13 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, yes I should have explained in the edit summary that I was using existing citations to expand certain sections. However I don't understand the object to the entirely new section that was added: "2013 pedophile police informant incident". It is fully sourced, and you will notice that by reverting the edit you restored similar info at the beginning of the entire section that briefly discussing the topic, which I had expanded. I also intend to add information about WaMu and cannabis, the other two topics at the very beginning of the section that are very short. Let me know if there's another issue, no interest in edit warring but I'd prefer to revert you revision unless you have further objections.--97.113.252.196 (talk) 01:31, 14 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Jenny Durkan[edit]

Hi, Misunderstanding about the filter and my usage of a word. So for a few of my edits I did not include an edit summary but should have. All of them were utilizing the exiting citations and I was just expanding the sections. But I do not understand your objection to the new section. I was taking info at the very beginning of the entire "Controversies" section (which is sourced) and expanded upon in in a new subsection. So overall the basic info still exists in the article, I just expanded upon it. Everything I added is fully sourced. I believe that it is written in a neutral tone. Let me know what, if any, further concerns you have.--97.113.252.196 (talk) 02:03, 14 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I'm very interested in your new anti-vandalism tool. When I right click on a user, I would like to see the old browser menu where I can open it a new tab. This is mainly an issue for user subpages. Interstellarity (talk) 17:31, 16 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Interstellarity, you can turn it off in RedWarn preferences > behaviour > User right-click menu Ed6767 talk! 17:32, 16 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for that. I would prefer that setting be default for all users so when I want to open user subpages in a new tab such as User:Interstellarity/sandbox, I can do that. You could also add a menu item that gives me the option of opening it in a new tab. Those are my thoughts for improving it. Interstellarity (talk) 18:13, 16 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hello sir! This article is from a website of a newspaper https://www.thehitavada.com/Encyc/2020/4/25/Bhagwan-Parshuram-a-wonderful-blend-of-Brahmatej-and-Kshatratej.html

It's clearly mention Parasuram gifted the bow to Karna.

User Fire star on heat said you believe sources in the article are not reliable but I think Wikipedia should believe in source not someone's personal opinion. This is most reliable source since it from a News portal.

How do i know it is working.Tbiw (talk) 07:43, 16 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Tbiw, hi, depending on your skin you should see RedWarn's controls appear in the top right or in your sidebar. Make sure you follow the official installation instructions. Ed6767 talk! 12:54, 16 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Use of external resources in user scripts[edit]

Hi Ed6767, I've noticed that your RedWarn user script makes use of resources external to Wikimedia-controlled servers, and as such carries privacy risks for those using it. If you want to continue using externally-hosted resources, then you must ensure that users who want to use the script are aware that it uses external resources. Currently, the installation instructions offer no such disclaimer. In the future, content security policy headers will likely block the loading of external resources like this.

Please can you to move the RedWarn code on-wiki, or at an absolute minimum add a disclaimer that the scripts are hosted on non-Wikimedia servers? Thanks, stwalkerster (talk) 19:18, 17 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Stwalkerster, thanks for pointing out that was an issue! I've partly done by moving the source back on-wiki, change was made to make loading and rolling out updates easier and more consistent and reliable by using a CDN which mirrors NPM - other scripts and libraries I will need to add a confirm dialog, as suggested, are going to be done later via a disclaimer as hosting all that code on-wiki would likely increase loading times by millennia and may have other issues - is using a CDN fine as long as a user confirms it's okay? Ed6767 talk! 19:29, 17 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
As long as the user is aware they're installing externally-hosted scripts and opts in to that (eg: an obvious disclaimer directly above the "put this code in your skin.js" instruction), I think it's probably fine. stwalkerster (talk) 21:06, 17 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Stwalkerster, I've updated Wikipedia:RedWarn#Installation to match, with the links to each CDNs privacy policies and a link to RedWarn's GitLab repo inside the collapsable section (in order not to throw too much jargon at non-technical editors). Thanks for your help! Ed6767 talk! 21:18, 17 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Don't worry because I didn't remove content. But please pay attention to my words. Mythological character Karna didn't possess Vijay dhanush. Philadelphia Special Investigation Commission[edit]

Hi Ed, I hope you are well! I've contested your speedy deletion nomination of Philadelphia Special Investigation Commission, because it will serve fine as a redirect to 1985 MOVE bombing. I also don't believe that "Unlikely notable and not a helpful daughter article. The commission existed for one and only one investigation and has no notability outside of the 1985 MOVE bombing" is a valid speedy deletion rationale. Notability CSDs should only be tagged when there's no credible claim of signifigance, which is defined as either " 1) a statement in the article that attributes noteworthiness, or 2) information you learn while looking at any references provided in the article." Investigating the the 1985 MOVE bombing in West Philadelphia is imo at least a credible claim of significance, particularly given that a google search for "Philadelphia Special Investigation Commission" brings up some coverage (probably not enough to merit a stand-alone article, but certainly enough to make a sd nom out-of-place. WP:CSD also very specifically advises that "Before nominating a page for speedy deletion, consider whether it could be improved, reduced to a stub, merged or redirected elsewhere, reverted to a better previous revision, or handled in some other way", in this case a redirect is apt. Let me know if you disagree or would like to further discuss this. Best wishes, Eddie891 Talk Work 15:18, 21 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Eddie891, thanks for setting up that redirect - I had requested CSD as the creator had made it as a daughter page and had a history of NPOV issues - I didn't wish to make a redirect as the editor also has a history of disruptive editing and I didn't want to start a war over it, so I did kinda use CSD as a compromise here. Thanks for letting me know! Ed6767 talk! 15:27, 21 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

So you got to work on tagging template documentation pages with {{RedWarn standard installation}}. Great, now Category:Templates used by RedWarn is at 250 pages. So I noticed 2 things from doing my stuff like normal.

  • No /doc subpage on single-issue notice and warning templates—I just found out about this. Time to go back to AWB.
  • Not a RedWarn standard installation— I have not seen {{uw-subtle4}} in RedWarn's default notice templates nor in Twinkle's. Did you just copy off of TW template? Loading pages take forever and nobody wants to fix that.

And that's what I found. 03:33, 21 June 2020 (UTC) I just found out that some templates like {{Uw-generic4}} are template-protected, so there you go, a major barrier. {{reply to|Can I Log In}}'s talk page! 03:37, 21 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Can I Log In, I had noticed this - and it's very annoying, because there's been some attempt at standardisation of some of the templates documentation by using a template, which was very useful as I just added and extra parameter. After generating a full list of templates I realised the huge discrepancies between many UW templates - the ones that had been updated (likely due to the problems I've encountered) were very easy to work with, but some haven't been updated in at least 12 years at this point, hence why RW had issues detecting at first because of use of Image: instead of File: which was depreciated YEARS ago. I really need to head round all the UW templates tidying them up, which has been done for many of them - and single notices and warnings, well, they're all over the place. None of the AWB lists I tried could achieve a full result and I only managed to tag a couple of them. And well, nobody without lots of time and willingness in AWB is up for updating it all, unless I wanted to use AWB to flood template editors with hundreds of edit requests, which is quite frankly insane and not to mention very frustrating for template editors trying to fill out genuine Infobox or category lists. I could request template editor rights, but I'm not that experienced with template editing and will likely be denied and probably will also be accused of hat collecting.

Sorry, that became a bit of a rant because it is a total mess. Ed6767 talk! 04:02, 21 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Lizzieliz101545, I live in the UK! For userboxes, there are loads over at Wikipedia:Userboxes, and you can format images how you like, just remember you should keep your user page relevant to your editing here - also, feel free to copy some of the code from my user page (the message box I made myself, but feel free to copy-paste the code). I just really make mine with a mix of the source editor (for editing and adding userboxes) and visual editor to add some pictures and text. Filips3  Done, athough I'm not here to fight for either side in this dispute. Make another attempt to communicate with the other use, and if they refuse to engage with you again, let me know. Ed6767 talk! 16:51, 24 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Ed6767I dont agree with the undo on Katowice Airport for me Filips3 works for either itaka or tui. If you check all his edit are about itaka or tui plus there are a lot of more reliable resources about Enter Air but all he is doing is adding 1000 itaka and Tui references. Please have a look online, any of the link he is adding have any information ( blank pages) Enter air is on skyscanner and momondo, please just google it and you will see the information. Im just wandering why this user haven't been ban yet after all the warning. Itaka and Tui doesn't use charter flights anymore, just have a look online please! I will undo your fix hoping you will keep it that way! If you dont consider my edit legit then I understand and wont interfere anymore but Filips3 is a spammer working under Itaka or Tui, I still haven't figure out for who. Just please check his links and you will see there in nothing there. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Andrzej Rybkiewicz (talkcontribs)

@Andrzej Rybkiewicz and Filips3: How about using both references? Two would be better than one, and that'd make you both happy. Ed6767 talk! 17:42, 24 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Andrzej Rybkiewicz: I just though that the trouble can be in seeing the content of the REFs. Please, could you tell me what you EXACTLY see, when you enter the REFs provided by me? You said about a blank page. What do yopu exactly see?
I don't feel ok in the moment you are saying many wrong things about me, which are made up by you. It is very unkind. When I enter my REFs, I see the booking system, in which I can see all the routes. In your REFs, there are search engines, which don't show charter services. Let's talk about the problem and explain everything, instead of deleting the content of the pages. I'd like to mention that you've also deleted the new LOT's routes from KTW which were added by me (I just added them again). Filips3 throttleKTW 20:08, 24 June 2020 (UTC)
Filips3 I haven't delete any LOT references! You are just writing me asking me to stop changing your reference links. The links you add doesn't provide any route! You have zero right to write on my talk page that I will be blocked if I keep going. Who are you? A guy who have been called out by the moderators more than one for disruptive editing, for not citing reliable sources, for going into editing wars and for changing ALL THE SOURCES INTO TUI! I will contact a moderator writing on their page as you do to check you out, lets see who will be blocked! Tell me where in earth have you see itaka or tui having charters planes to Spain for example as you edit on Menorca??? Yes your links are empty, it shows nothing, just the reservation page by those tour operators. You can add new reliable reference on the routes but instead you keep adding the same links. Please Ed6767 if you could check his links and you will see what I mean. Zero info about any route. On top Tui doesn't use any charter flights, they provide charters for other companies. For been a aviator lover you know very little. Just please stop editing and do some reading, it will do only good! Cheers!
@Andrzej Rybkiewicz and Filips3: Let both references stick, assume good faith and please stop fighting over a trivial matter. Including both references is still the best idea Imo, if one is a poorer reference, it can be placed as a secondary citation or if it doesn't contain relevant info at all, it can be removed. You guys just need to agree on something here first. I'm not here to resolve the dispute for you, but to provide another opinion. Ed6767 talk! 21:12, 24 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Ed6767 I agree but Filips3 its just to proud to let it go! He won't be fine with your solution.
Andrzej_Rybkiewicz I am ok with that. Don't be angry. I don't want to be in this edit war. If you want to remain 2 refs, that's ok. I added new LOT scheduled routes to KTW page. throttleKTW 21:23, 24 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

The Barnstar of Diligence
Your diligence in creating and maintaining RedWarn is wonderful in its own right, but the way you handled criticism and took feedback on board is exemplary. Thanks for your hard work, and I look forward to more of it! Wug·a·po·des 20:49, 24 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Redwarn[edit]

Ed6767,

Ignore the haters. They're going to hate anyway. I mean, first of all, they're trying to accuse you of being an "overlord" about who can and can't use your tool? They seem to have forgotten about Stiki, where you HAD to be a rollbacker, and one person had the authority to issue that. There are multiple versions of Linux, each fills it's own need and design, you don't see anyone complaining about "too many version of Linux". Same thing here, each version of AntiVandalism tool fills it's own need. Haters are going to hate, just ignore them and do what you do best, code awesome tools! Necromonger...Arbs were wrong, Resysop BHG! 12:02, 24 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Wekeepwhatwekill, thanks for your kind words - I wouldn't think they were "haters", quite frankly, it is a complex issue and I do want feedback and am grateful that a discussion has been raised on the issue - be it positive or critical as this is what helps things get better and better. If I ignore people bringing up their concerns, there'd be no improvement, and improvement is critical for both community support, and unless somebody is completely incoherent and/or malicious, ignoring feedback and discussion would probably be a bad idea if I wanted to be trusted within the community, not to mention how doing so could anger people due to my lack of response - you win some and you lose some and that's okay, it's all part of the process for me, be it frustrating at the time, I always take it into account. Thanks again :) Ed6767 talk! 12:17, 24 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I support the positive aspects of this message. Also support User:Wekeepwhatwekill's signatorial demand. But would ask that they recast those questioning the role and nature of the tool from being haters to something...else. No-one's hating on Ed6767, just raising legitimate queries and having what seems to be a pretty reasonable difference of opinion. Well, for WP:AN, anyway  :) ——Serial # 12:19, 24 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Redwarn and Superlinks[edit]

I believe if you used jQuery to append your new content to mw-indicators, rather than rewrite the innerHTML, it wouldn't delete the events.

document.getElementsByClassName("mw-indicators mw-body-content")[0].innerHTML += pageIconHTML;

could be replaced with something like

$(".mw-indicators").append($(pageIconHtml));

Hope that helps. – bradv🍁 02:58, 25 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Bradv, It looks like that is the issue - it works fine when the icons are set on the sidebar in RWs preferences. I'll try and sort that out in the next update. Thanks! Ed6767 talk! 09:41, 25 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Yep, that fixed it. Pretty dumb of me to go for the += method for appending HTML here especially as I've used $.append before. Thanks for the tip! Ed6767 talk! 18:34, 25 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

The AN RedWarn Discussion[edit]

Hi Ed6767,

Just thought I'd drop through and say thanks for your engagement on the AN RedWarn discussion. I'd read through the documentation of it a little while back, but as I'm one of those already comfortable by TW, I'd not downloaded it. It was great to see such a high level of responsiveness given the fairly significant cost of effort (including potentially unnecessary effort!) on your behalf.

You clearly know the subject well - I'll keep an ear to the ground, particularly as more experienced users get practice with it and can give a review.

Synthwave[edit]

Hi Ed, I hope you're well. I actioned your request for protection of Synthwave and wanted to give you some unsolicited, friendly advice. Looking at the edit history, I would suggest you be more careful in reverting and using rollback. The issue looked like a content dispute—at the very least it wasn't obvious vandalism—and you reverted over 30 times. Frankly, I'm surprised you didn't get a 3RR block, which is why I'm asking you to be more careful with the volume and rate of reverts in the future. Rapidly reverting someone for half an hour is rarely the correct course of action. The edits didn't look like they needed to be reverted immediately, so there's not much harm in waiting for the editor to go away and then reverting. You do good work so hopefully you find this helpful rather than off-putting. Wug·a·po·des 01:57, 27 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Wugapodes, thanks for getting in touch - and yeah, you're right, I'm sorry about that. Often though - it's a pretty bad force of habit really. I don't really need to explain my actions because while not intentionally malicious, they were a bit dumb and would've been avoided if I used a bit more due diligence. Didn't realize I did it over that long though, wow. I'll keep that down to a minimum, as I've only been here for a few months mainly there's many things I need to refine in my editing, so thanks for taking the time to write :) Ed6767 talk! 02:22, 27 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Wugapodes and Ed6767: it should be noted that there was a note that said that the info in question should not be removed without talk page consensus. PRAHLADbalaji (M•T•AC) This message was left at 03:15, 27 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Prahlad balaji, while it changes nothing here regarding my errors, I had already reported to AIV, and was attempting to research this issue and its notability only to be reverted. Both the standard user warnings, a new open-ended talk page thread and a the existing comment regarding establishing consensus didn't work out and even after a 3RR violation by the user that was let slip while assuming good faith, I felt the only option to continue would be immediately submitting a AIV and RFPP following the dismissal of a final to prevent the inevitable dispute, but that takes time, nearly 30 mins in this case. Reverting immediately was where I went wrong here.
Unrelated to this matter: Some quick digging on the user does return offwiki evidence of both sockpuppetry and other edit wars, although per WP:OUTING, I cannot share this so an SPI (or a public one, at least) would be pointless due to lack of on-wiki evidence to warrant a checkuser. May content ArbCom, but doubt it's worthwhile in this case as the edits aren't overly disruptive AFAIK. But, then again, socking is socking, so I'll probably look at what I can do later in the day. Broken formatting on single level templates[edit]

@ Ed6767 When using template warnings with a single level (e.g. uw-talkinarticle) via the GUI , RedWarn treats them as multi-level templates and automatically inserts a number (e.g. uw-talkinarticle1), leading to broken formatting. IIRC, I have encountered this with multiple single-level warnings, but I'm not sure whether the bug occurs with all of them. Also: Thank you very much for your work on RedWarn! It's an incredibly helpful tool. Best, Blablubbs (talk) 12:38, 28 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Blablubbs, I couldn't replicate this in the New Notice GUI - do you mean this happens when using the automatic warning feature? Ed6767 talk! 17:05, 28 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Ed6767, yes, that's what I meant. Sorry for being unclear. Best, Blablubbs (talk) 17:28, 28 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Blablubbs, thanks, just replicated it now and have made a bug file. Should be fixed by RedWarn 15 - thanks for the feedback! Ed6767 talk! 18:09, 28 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

We need to talk...[edit]

First off, well done on creating RedWarn. Even though I don't use it myself I can see that many do, and it's drawn many new hands to the back-office tasks of the wiki, where fresh help is always welcome. The tool's rapid uptake means you're now going to start bumping into the Peter Parker principle.

The tool's method of dealing with abuse (WP:REDWARN/A) is based on your email and User:Ed6767/redwarn/blacklist.js. As an in-development kludge, this works, but for a tool in widespread use this seems problematic. There's no visibility to the process. There's no appeal process. It effectively gives you admin-like rights over other editors, subject only to the intervention of WP:Interface administrators (though regular admins would be capable of deleting the blacklist entirely). Having a developer exercise those kind of rights isn't good for the wiki.

A bit of history for newer wikipedians stumbling across this - the community came close to ripping apart over the powers exercised by developers (WMF) last June - September in WP:FRAMGATE.

I think, before you progress much further, the community ought to give its opinion on the controls required. Whether it's the blacklist as at present, or the whitelist model used for Wikipedia:AutoWikiBrowser/CheckPage and Wikipedia:New pages patrol/Redirect whitelist.

I leave it to you to give it some thought and start that discussion. WP:VPP is probably the best forum. Thanks, Cabayi (talk) 14:01, 29 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Cabayi and Ed6767: the same thing might happen in the English Uncyclopedia. 107.77.189.39 (talk) 14:28, 29 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Cabayi, thanks for getting in touch. There's a reason I haven't used the blacklist system (other than for one already blocked user as a test), and that's because, at current, it is fundamentally flawed, as you have pointed out. I don't want to be, nor is it right to be the overlord of who can or can't use it, especially as more and more people begin to get on board, but then again, even if I did that, a user could just swap over to Twinkle, which has no such blacklist - but it could be argued that Twinkle is a fundamentally less powerful tool when compared to RW which provides many more semi-automated features, such as notifying users when a page is edited. On further thought, I think a blacklist in RedWarn probably isn't necessary right now, and if a user really decides to abuse RW, AIV should work fine, not to mention filtering by the new "RedWarn" tag in recent changes, and if that takes time then it'd be trivial enough to just temporarily add a line that prevents them from using the tool. I'll rewrite the RedWarn abuse sections on this now. Thanks again. Ed6767 talk! 14:37, 29 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Fine, it just needed a bit of thought. That's all I could wish for. Thanks, Cabayi (talk) 15:37, 29 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Thoughts on blacklist[edit]

I don't think it would be helpful to have a username blacklist on RedWarn. After all, the user may just reverse engineer RedWarn and remove all restrictions on the tool. At the end of the day, using a tool in a manner contradicting policy results in blocks. So having the blacklist may not be super helpful as the user may just reverse engineer the tool. For example, Can I Log In reversed engineered JavaScriptWikiBrowser so he could use it before being approved to use it. Aasim 21:22, 30 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Awesome Aasim,  Already done - the blacklist was removed earlier this week. See User_talk:Ed6767/archive/3#We_need_to_talk... Ed6767 talk! 21:26, 30 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
