Blacklisting possibility?[edit]

Hi Ed6767,

RedWarn (like Twinkle has for a long time, I hasten to add) starting to get issues with users utilising it and causing massive problems. Currently there's no way to stop them from using it except for either blocking, or, possibly making a redwarn TBAN and hoping they comply.

Do you have any thoughts on if this could be worked around - can blacklisting (based off a central, fully protected, page) be done?

I have no coding knowledge at all, so no idea if the above is possible, let alone practical, and then let alone worth doing/a wise idea, but I thought it worth bringing up Nosebagbear (talk) 16:51, 31 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I tried Redwarn, but decided to uninstall[edit]

I tried RedWarn following up on an invited you placed on my talk a long while ago and recent admin board chatter. While I think there are many positive aspects to the tool, I've decided to uninstall after a short trial and want to convey why. I am comparing RedWarn vs. recent changes (with live updates) + Twinkle:

1. Required mouse hovering: I like the fixed multi-pane setup (as opposed to tabs/new-windows) that I can get with RedWarn, however requiring me to hold a mouse over a text box to get live updates is annoying as I am doing other tasks (on other windows) while I have Wikipedia open - and you're basically hijacking my mouse when I'm multi tasking. Instead of popping back to Wikipedia when I see an interesting diff to follow up on, I am sitting with my mouse captive on that box.

2. Latest diff - DANGEROUS. With recent changes I click on the diff that triggered the filter, and go to that diff. With RedWarn I get the latest diff. Neither of these is ideal, as ideally I would want the combined diff (+list of edit summaries) of the user that triggered the filter (+ideally having the diff removed/marked if someone else reverted). However RedWarn's behavior is DANGEROUS as the latest diff is often someone else reverting/correcting the original vandal. I have my own error rate (even if I try to keep it low), and the danger here is that I will confuse a vandalism revert by an established user as vandalism - and end up reverting and warning them - a major gaffe. I am somewhat protected in RC+Twinkle in that my errors only occur on diffs that triggered the filters I chose - and are likely to be bad anyway.

3. User warnings - I like the interface, though I don't like the vandalism default and the need to erase it in order to select other warnings (Twinkle is faster in the box). However, the real issue here is that with the warning button I am issuing a warning without first seeing the user page. With Twinkle, I have the user talk page pop up and I can see prior warnings and activity on the page. If it is an established user I might think again. If it is a vandal with prior warnings I might escalate. If it is a rank newbie I might drop a welcome or welcome-vandal template. With the RedWarn interface (unless I open a new unrelated window) - I am issuing the warning blind. Combined with the increased danger of reverting good edits due to the tool displaying the most recent diff - this is a double bind (or double blind?).

I think RedWarn has much promise. It is more modern than Twinkle. I probably will try it again in the future, but at the moment the hover requirement is inconvenient and the most-recent-diff + user-warning interface is more dangerous (though probably faster) than Twinkle.--Chuka Chief (talk) 20:37, 1 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Chuka Chief, thank you very much for the feedback - just a few responses and clarifications regarding your points:
  1. A valid point - we're working on it :)
  2. The latest diff is an important feature in RedWarns design - it is the responsibility of a user to ensure that the diff is relevant as part of their review process - we'll likely add a note in for the next version however
  3. You're not going in blind - you have both a basic indicator of the latest warning this user has received in the current month - situated next to this indicator are two buttons, "see notices for this month" and "preview userpage" - they do what they say on the tin. Typically, you can rely on the warning indicator for most cases, but users should always use due diligence.
I think the core failure of the redwarn-web project is that it's simply not documented enough that results in misunderstandings of correct use and that consequently results in. Obviously it is my own responsibility in use of a tool. The point I was trying to make on the latest diff issue(2) is that while it is an improvement in some aspects, it also presents a danger (as the revert button reverts the latest one, not the original editor triggering a filter). I also think you can do something even better than just showing me a diff. I would love if I could see on the diff screen a better combined diff (so from trigger to present, or from first edit by triggering editor to present - many vandals break up edits into chunks) + a shortened page history (like the last 5 revisions - time, user, edit summary) - this would give me more information to act on (and I'm working with large computer screens, plenty of room but if I have to do another click to see page history then that takes time). Some sort of indication of whether you are seeing content from the triggering editor (from the RC feed) or a different editor would be nice. If you give me more intel in this single-screen snapshot, then I can act better. Same with user warnings, I'd love to see for instance a shortened user page history. Some vandals are well informed enough that they blank prior warnings and do an intervening edit so that automatic stuff doesn't work well (and this fools Twinkle user who don't look at the talk page history).--Chuka Chief (talk) 14:18, 2 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

The same that were target of a Sockpuppet Masters User:RandomAccount13343413 and his lesser socks User:RandomAccount13343413 , User:RandomAccount1235423, User:KasimMejia.User:Gilesartq, User:SyriaAnalyst,User:Nabu-Kudurri-Usur Yaniv, 110.168.30.203,176.88.143.228 and Sock Puppet Master User:Gala19000 and his lesser socks User:Maistara

The new account and the other account have the same POV pushing and make the same fishy Edit Summaries. 1) Suspected new Sock TaherGhoneim 2) Proven Sock Nabu-Kudurri-Usur Yaniv 3) Proven Sock Maistara

Also this new user, have non encyclopedic languague. 1) Accusing other users of being Russian trolls on edit summary 1, 2, 3, 4, 5

Awesome Aasim, on the same browser I cannot replicate your issue so it's going to be hard to find a fix - for now, you could try putting: var dialogEngine_checkExist = setInterval(()=>{if ("dialogEngine" in window) {clearInterval(dialogEngine_checkExist);dialogEngine.freezeScrolling = ()=>{};}}, 50); in your common.js to disable the new scroll freezing feature. Awesome Aasim, I'm really unsure what's happening then. I couldn't replicate the bug on my system with the same version of Edge. Update on my freezing problem[edit]

Not sure if this is of any interest but I've managed to resolve the problem I reported in July, though more by luck than judgement. I can't find it in the archive now in any case but I know it was you that responded. It seems like it was to do with my Chrome settings, and it went away after I changed the setting that reads "Continue running background apps..." How and when it came to be set, I don't know. Why it only affected English Wikipedia I don't know. But since I unset it, the problem hasn't recurred. Deb (talk) 13:45, 15 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Wikihow6754, the only mentions of "Kordel Davis" I can see are in a copy-pasted statement from Sheriff Donnie Harrison’s Facebook page in two of your citations, hence the reversion. I have noticed your contributions to RedWarn and want to say thanks. I was wondering if you thought about applying for adminship here? I have a feeling that I would probably not be a good admin for a while but I do think that your contributions to a major antivandalism tool with some varying features may help a bit with adminship. I know, for example, that you know how and when a page should be protected or when a user should be blocked from editing. Do you think you are ready? Replace the reply-link import code with:

But I wanted to consult the foundation, Wikimedia's top body. It is about a proposal that they are trying to create on ptwiki to prohibit the anonymous users of to edit in the Wikipedia.
