GOCE July 2010 backlog elimination drive chart

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors Backlog Elimination Drive! We have now passed the halfway point, so here's an update.

Progress Report - Progress toward the targets has been good. 751 articles out of the approximately 1,600 we would like to get completed by the end of the month were done by July 15, so we will be very close to meeting the target for volume. However, we would like to clear all of the 2008 articles from the backlog, and there are still 892 left to do. Please consider choosing one of these older articles when looking for something to copy edit. If we focus our firepower we can completely wipe out 2008 from the queue.

Participation Report - 95 people signed up for the July drive. This is a great result compared to May, when we had 36. However, in May only one person that signed up didn't do any copy edits, and in July only 59 of the 95 have posted any copy edits on the big board.

The task may seem insurmountable but please remember that if all 95 participants copy edit just one article a day from now until the end of the month, we will eliminate 1,300 more articles from the backlog. So please consider participating at whatever level you can! All contributions are appreciated.

MessageDeliveryBot trial run

If you don't mind I would like to talk this through with the Guild of Copy Editors before putting in a request. The organizer of the drives, Noraft, normally uses AutoWikiBrowser to deliver the newsletters. Last time, though, he was called up on a 24-hour thing so I had to deliver the newsletters, and since I don't know how to use AWB, I delivered them manually. Hi there. Yes, I suggest you start discussing it with other users to see if there is consensus for it. For a bot task to run there has to be fairly strong consensus, and at the previous discussion I didn't see that, which is why I withdrew the BRFA. Perhaps you could start a village pump discussion, or a RFC to establish consensus. GOCE Backlog Elimination Drive Wrap-up

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors July 2010 Backlog Elimination Drive. Thanks to all who participated in the drive! Over 100 editors—including Jimbo Wales—signed up this time (nearly triple the participants of the May drive). This benefited the Guild as well as the articles in need of copy editing. You can see from the comparison graphs that we increased the number of completed copyedits substantially. Unfortunately, we were not able to meet our goal of completely wiping out 2008 from the queue. We also were not able to reduce the backlog to less than 6,000 articles. We suspect people were busy with real life summertime things, at least in the northern hemisphere! We were able to remove the months of January, February, March, April, and May from the backlog, and we almost wiped out the month of June. We reduced the backlog by 1,289 articles (17%), so all in all it was a very successful drive, and we will be holding another event soon. We'll come up with some new ideas to try to keep things fresh and interesting. Keep up the good work, everybody!

If you copy edited at least 4,000 words, you qualify for a barnstar. If you edited in the May 2010 GOCE Backlog Elimination Drive, your word totals are cumulative for barnstars (not the leaderboard). Over the course of the next week or two, we will be handing out the barnstars.

Thanks for the offer, but I prefer to deliver it myself as it helps me to keep track of current members. Hmm... I'm not quite sure what happened. Looking at the logs it seems that the bot just stopped all of a sudden, without outputting any error messages or anything. Anyway, I reset the file that tracks when the bot is running, and your request is running now. I'll improve the error logging a little bit, so if the problem occurs again I might be able to pinpoint what is causing the problem a bit better. Problems with MessageDeliveryBot

I'm having problems running MDB. Every time I try to run the bot, a screen comes up that says "The connection to the server was reset while the page was loading." Is it just that my computer is stupid, or is there something wrong with the bot? I think the former is much more likely. The Wikipedia Guild of Copy-Editors invite you to participate in the September 2010 Backlog Elimination Drive, a month-long effort to reduce the backlog of articles that require copy-editing. Hi there. That depends on what task you're thinking of having it do. How it works is that you give the bot a list of categories (and, optionally, an importance level for each category), and the bot tags the pages in them for your WikiProject. The bot can also automatically assess very short articles (typically below 2500 bytes) as stubs, and inherit tags from other WikiProject if they all agree (for example, if a couple of projects have already tagged an article as C-class, the bot will tag it that way). From the WikiProject's point of view it's fairly simple, all I need is the list of categories to tag. Otherwise, I could just do assessment of already tagged articles. The only real danger of using it is that different project have different standards - for example an article might be C-class for another project, but if your standards are a bit stricter you might have preferred it to be start-class. BTW, do you think you can convert a couple more headings while you're at it? For example, on commons:File:Origin of the League of Nations.png there's "==License==" which could be "== {{int:license}} ==" and "==File history==" which could be "== {{original upload log}} ==". Hi there! The bot should ignore content that is commented out, or between <nowiki> tags. As far as I see, the edits that DodoBot made to commons:File:SFO_at_night.jpg were to non-commented out text. I realize that that was one rare case where the bot shouldn't have edited the header, but there is really no way for the bot to know. Of course I don't mind, I shouldn't have blocked it in the first place and I'm sorry that it stopped your bot (I was hoping it would resume after unblocking). Thanks for adding those other variations. Right now I'm putting together a page of regexes (.NET style for AWB) for file page localization along with some syntax fixes and general cleanups. It'll be something like this. There's already a script for pywikipedia but I like using AWB better (it's much easier for modifying/(de)selecting individual regexes). Hi again. Well, I have a bunch of regular expressions for localization and cleanup already. I sent you an email with a copy-paste of the XML file I use in AWB. If you paste that into a file with a .xml extension and then open it up with AWB you'll see all the regular expressions that I use :). I also haven't had much luck creating decent regexes and that set looks promising. No problem. I used that one mainly for normalizing text to improve machine-readability. I wouldn't say it's "very controversial" (maybe if that's the only change you were making with a bot/AWB, I wouldn't like that either) but I agree there's no need to change other valid forms. I didn't think much about preserving all the acceptable forms since it's so trivial, but you're right. You may have noticed that for the description field ones I use a form that is something like (\|[ ]*date[ ]*=[ ]*) so that it preserves the whitespace or lack thereof, which is kinda in the same boat. Thank you! Regarding this, I found that it misses some when MultiLine isn't checked. I'm not sure why, but you can test this on commons:File:Francisco Pizarro.jpeg. I always thought Multiline makes ^ and $ apply to every line instead the whole page... but I know even without it you can still match every line (usually). I took the liberty of creating the user page under your userspace at commons:User:Rocket000/Regexes/XML, hope you don't mind. It's still being worked on and need to do a bit more debugging, but basically that's what I had in mind. I was talking about your bot. I would say Commons is much less bureaucratic. In fact, it wasn't until May 2009, after someone rewrote the page, including this subtle little change, that users needed approval to run any kind of bot (unless they wanted a flag of course). An even that was done without much consensus either way. I have used my bot for all kinds of things and never asked for permission (the flag was for unspecified "miscellaneous" tasks, so I wouldn't flood the RC). No one minds.
