Category links

Hello, Elysia,

Regarding your response to Sahmofor, here, the category link you meant to add isn't there. (See sentence: "So you could find an article, for example, in. ") I wanted to explain why.

When you wish to create a link that opens a Category page, you have to include a colon in front; see WP:LINK#Links to Wikipedia's categories for details. For example: to link to category "Start-Class Technology articles", you code it like this:

Click [[:Category:Start-Class Technology articles]] to go to the category page.

and if you leave it unpiped, it will look like this in running text:

Click Category:Start-Class Technology articles to go to the category page.

If you leave off the colon, it will look like this in running text:

Click to go to the category page.

and not only that, it will categorize the Talk page itself, into the category. If you go to User talk:Sahmofor, scroll down, and look at the list of categories at the bottom of the page, you will see that it is categorized in "Start-Class Technology articles". When there's no colon in front, that's what it does.

You can fix the link, by just prepending : to that link. That will simultaneously make that link visible, as well as remove the Talk page from that Category. Using Preview mode before publishing is always a good idea, so you can catch this sort of thing before it happens. Hope this helps, Mathglot (talk) 01:59, 9 February 2019 (UTC)

Mathglot thanks for catching my mistake! I have corrected it. Enwebb (talk) 22:17, 10 February 2019 (UTC)

Reviewing sandbox

Hi Elysia. I've finished all but the Journalism Career section in my sandbox work on Mary Birdsall if you want to begin reviewing. I will get the Journalism part done this weekend.--Biotech46 (talk) 22:22, 14 February 2019 (UTC)

Hi Biotech46--I've left you feedback on the Mary Birdsall talk page! Elysia (Wiki Ed) (talk) 17:38, 19 February 2019 (UTC)
My second article will not be ready for review this week. I've been sick for a couple weeks and fallen behind. The 1913 parade is a big subject and I have a lot of material to review and summarize. I'm currently adding raw material to my sandbox, but will still have to edit it. I don't plan to copy from the current article to my sandbox, but will incorporate my work to it on the mainspace instead. Hopefully that will minimize problems with source citations.--Biotech46 (talk) 15:05, 11 March 2019 (UTC)

Help with Peer Review

Hi Elysia,

I'm in one of the courses for which you're a WikiEd staff. I haven't received a peer review on my article (or, rather, the work in my sandbox), and, as a result, don't know how I should improve my work. Do you have any suggestions please? Thanks! Shannip (talk) 18:37, 18 March 2019 (UTC)

added feedback on their sandbox talk page Elysia (Wiki Ed) (talk) 20:07, 18 March 2019 (UTC)

Thank you very much for your comments, and I will be reaching out to my professor regarding peer review! Shannip (talk) 02:35, 20 March 2019 (UTC)

Also, regarding your comment that all facts should be cited, the page itself does not have many sources, and I was only able to add sources to what I added. The work in my sandbox includes my additions and edits to the page contents, and there are some parts I didn't touch, but couldn't find sources for. I feel uncomfortable removing the content because it is valid, I just can't find the information. Shannip (talk) 02:40, 20 March 2019 (UTC)

Shannip how do you know the information is valid if you can't find reliable sources to support it? It's alright if you can't find the sources and fix the page as long as you aren't making it worse by adding more uncited information :) But that is a core tenet of the site: It doesn't matter what's "true" or not on Wikipedia, it matters if it's verifiable or not. We support verifiability by adding references to reliable sources. No reliable sources = not verifiable. A lot of the times uncited content will get removed. Elysia (Wiki Ed) (talk) 15:59, 20 March 2019 (UTC)

Thank you, Elysia! I will keep this in mind when improving my article. Shannip (talk) 23:19, 26 March 2019 (UTC)

Still a Stub?

Hello Elysia!

Thank you for welcoming me to Wikipedia! I just had a quick question. I accidently deleted the stub tag on my page for "Gorgasia" for my school project. Our main mission for the assignment was to get a wikipedia page to the point where it was no longer recognized as a stub. I already had one Master Editor review my page and they did not add the stub tag back on but I thought i would ask: do you think that my edits have reclassified this page as no longer a stub or should the stub tag be added back in?

-Jwbuzzell

— Preceding unsigned comment added by Jwbuzzell (talkcontribs) 16:00, 2 April 2019 (UTC)

Jwbuzzell, thanks for your message! You were totally correct in removing the stub tag from your article. In fact, I have reevaluated the article from "stub class" to "C class", indicative of a vast improvement. That now puts it among the top 7% of Wikipedia articles in terms of quality! Nicely done :) Elysia (Wiki Ed) (talk) 16:10, 2 April 2019 (UTC)

University of British Columbia/Women in the Economy (Winter II)

Hi Elysia - just a note to say that I've been going through all of the articles written for Wikipedia:Wiki Ed/University of British Columbia/Women in the Economy (Winter II), and this is simply the best performance I've seen from a class of new wikipedia editors, probably ever. You & Marina and the students are to be congratulated - about 30 excellent new economist articles. Well done & thanks.

If you do another exercise creating lots of women biogs, always worth dropping a note at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Women in Red, since there's always a job of doing things like wikidata links, {{Authority control}}, links from other articles, which we can generally help with. --Tagishsimon (talk) 23:44, 3 April 2019 (UTC)

Your Reminder on Potential COI

Thank you for the reminder about potential COI on editing of Wikipedia page on Marie T. Mora. It is certainly not my intention to create the appearance of a COI. As such, I undid the minor revision I had made to that page (which was adding a link to another Wikipedia page), and I will not make any other edits, regardless of how minor they might be. MTMora (talk) 21:44, 5 April 2019 (UTC)

New help request

Hi, Elysia I need help turning the Atlantic pygmy octopus page from a stub for my class. I added edits to the previous article but wanted to know if I need to fix anything or add more information. I was also unsure if I needed to leave anything on the article's talk page about what I added. Thanks! Ecovelle (talk) 21:00, 8 April 2019 (UTC)

Hi Ecovelle, I have upgraded the class of the article from a stub class to a C class. However, I noted some areas for improvement. Everything added to Wikipedia should be cited--if multiple, consecutive sentences are drawn from the same source, then it is acceptable to cite the source once at the end of the consecutive sentences. Therefore, it is a red flag when a paragraph or a section ends without a citation.
I have added some citation needed tags to parts of the article. Once you add in the relevant citation for each, you can remove the tag. Let me know if you have any questions. Elysia (Wiki Ed) (talk) 21:06, 8 April 2019 (UTC)

Help request from Jmiah12 (talk) 01:43, 9 April 2019 (UTC)

Hello Elysia!

I am new to editing on Wikipedia. I am currently trying to add to a page on pangolin trade for my anthropology class. After citing it and moving my information from my sandbox to the article, at first it transferred over the citations with it. But when I looked back on the page a week later there was a "citation needed" area where a few of my citations were listed for one of my sources. Following that, I used one of the sources from a section other than my own but every time I try to cite it (or any other citation) my citation defaults to the 16th citation and will not let me list any other source. Sorry that is kind of confusing.

Hi Elysia, thank you very much for your note about my submission for Good Article! Someone responded to my nomination of my article for DYK saying that the best way would be to be accepted for GA and then go from there. Alas, that doesn't seem to be happening, but I really appreciate your support! Shannip (talk) 23:53, 14 April 2019 (UTC)

Shannip, so what the reviewer meant was that your article did not meet the Did You Know eligibility criteria. Did you know (DYK) is for articles that have been either:
  1. created in the past 7 days
  2. expanded 5x with text in the past 7 days
  3. promoted to Good Article status within the past 7 days
If you're interested in pursuing the GA further, you can start by incorporating the feedback that the reviewer left for you before nominating the article again. However, this is likely above and beyond what is expected for your class assignment, so don't feel like you have to. It's awesome to see you exploring more of Wikipedia, though! I started editing for the first time through a classroom assignment and now I've been here for several years. It's really fun :) Elysia (Wiki Ed) (talk) 16:18, 15 April 2019 (UTC)

Plagiarism

Hi Elysia, would you mind taking a look at some material added by one of your students, Special:Contributions/Matthewsgabe?

It appears to be plagiarism, with a slightly-reworded version of several pages of material copied from a website. The article is Russian cuisine, and the edit is this one: [1]. It's obviously taken from these web pages:

It looks like in the next edit here: [2] he did try to give a link to the page as a reference (it got reverted for being misformatted), so he wasn't really trying to hide the source. But it's still not acceptable, as it's clearly a close paraphrase and a copyright violation.

I've already removed the material from the article. I'll wait a bit for you to take a look, then I'll be requesting revision deletion to redact it from the page history. I thought it might be better for you to follow up with him about it, rather than me talking to him directly. Let me know if I should be talking to someone else instead. Thanks! --IamNotU (talk) 16:47, 26 May 2019 (UTC)

Hi IamNotU, thanks for bearing with me over the long weekend! I had Monday off :) I left the student a message on their talk page about avoiding plagiarism in the future. However, their course ended last week and it is likely or probable that they won't edit again. I also had one of my colleagues with admin privileges remove the copyvio from Russian cuisine. We get plagiarism alerts that catch a lot of what the students do, but some invariably doesn't get picked up. Thanks a lot for pointing this out to me so I could fix it! Elysia (Wiki Ed) (talk) 17:05, 28 May 2019 (UTC)
Ok, good, thanks for looking into it, and for taking care of the deletion... --IamNotU (talk) 22:29, 28 May 2019 (UTC)

Regarding this edit [3], I am curious as to how you made the determination that a major group of tribes, nearly 30 of them, totaling over 100,000 people, is of low importance to the indigenous peoples of North America WikiProject? Beeblebrox (talk) 17:30, 29 May 2019 (UTC)

Beeblebrox, certainly was not my intention to say that the article was of low importance to the WikiProject. I was using rater to update the class. When an importance parameter is missing it inserts a default value of "low". I am unfamiliar with this WikiProject, so if this importance value is not accurate, please replace with a value that is more appropriate. Thanks, Elysia (Wiki Ed) (talk) 17:33, 29 May 2019 (UTC)

Hi Elysia, I just created the page Diffusion-Limited Escape (of Atmospheres). I just realized that the title of the page should not be capitalized after the first word.
