Possibly unfree File:Balhaf-Bir Ali.jpg[edit]

A file that you uploaded or altered, File:Balhaf-Bir Ali.jpg, has been listed at Wikipedia:Possibly unfree files because its copyright status is unclear or disputed. If the file's copyright status cannot be verified, it may be deleted. You may find more information on the file description page. You are welcome to add comments to its entry at the discussion if you are interested in it not being deleted. Thank you. --J Milburn (talk) 15:28, 13 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

In response to your email (probably best to reply on my talk page- I really will see it quicker) on Wikipedia, only images that may be freely used or modified by anyone, including for commercial reasons, count as "free". As such, this image would not be free, and so is not appropriate to use at all. Sorry. J Milburn (talk) 21:10, 13 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
OpenStreetMap licenses its content under Creative Commons Attribution ShareAlike 2.0, so their content is usable. Wikimedia Commons has a lot of maps, and you could create one yourself, but there are not many sources for arial photos. NASA and the US Government websites would be your best bet, but I wouldn't count on anything being there. J Milburn (talk) 12:45, 15 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Topology[edit]

I used this online translator to translate topology into Arabic and got طوبولوجيا. It seems okay, when I translated it back from Arabic to English it came up with topology. It even translated طوبولوجيا from Arabic into Spanish as topología which is correct. -- ديكلان

Proposed deletion of Queen Arwa University[edit]

The article Queen Arwa University has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Copied from another university article, questionable notability

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{dated prod}} will stop the Proposed Deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. The Speedy Deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and Articles for Deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Stifle (talk) 17:34, 25 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Proposal for Queen Arwa University deletion.[edit]

Dear sir, I will be so glad if explain to me how you found this article was copied from another article? If you were aiming at some other Yemeni university article, then you are somehow right. This is because I am the one who wrote them, Queen Arwa University, University of Hadhramout, Taiz University, Hodeidah University, and Ibb University. I was expecting expanding these articles but not deletion! I can type as many words as I can but in the end I am not that skilled in English language. You can see these articles in Arabic site too. Please don't consider my talk as an attack; I need just to enrich articles about Yemen but honestly. I sent this message by mistake to another one (who removed another mistake I did by accident).

I've tried to add some more information about the University, and supported that with the University website page (English beside the original Arabic). I eventually realized some mistake in the template (infobox), in which Taizz University was still there, and corrected it too; however I don't think this would make you doubt about the article! Forgive me, because I lack for the proffesional writing, and expect someday another who can volunteer to rewrite them according to Wiki standards.--Email4mobile (talk) 00:56, 26 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

When I tagged the page, it looked like this: [1]. The info box and several other details specified Taiz university, so it appeared to me that the the article had been copied without making any real change from the other article. As you have improved the article, you are welcome to remove the proposed deletion tag. Stifle (talk) 07:52, 26 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Orphaned non-free image (File:Magic square 4x4 Shams Al-maarif (Arabic magics).jpg)[edit]

⚠

Thanks for uploading File:Magic square 4x4 Shams Al-maarif (Arabic magics).jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of "file" pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. I've taken a look at the images, and, because of their age, they're in the public domain, so can be used freely. There is no need for them to be deleted. Feel free to contact me on my talk page if I can be of any help. J Milburn (talk) 20:22, 1 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for File:Shams Al-ma'arif pp2.jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:Shams Al-ma'arif pp2.jpg. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the file description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. ww2censor (talk) 01:13, 9 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Better source request for File:Shams Al-ma'arif pp2.jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:Shams Al-ma'arif pp2.jpg. You provided a source, but it is difficult for other users to examine the copyright status of the image because the source is incomplete. Please consider clarifying the exact source so that the copyright status may be checked more easily. It is best to specify the exact Web page where you found the image, rather than only giving the source domain or the URL of the image file itself. Please update the image description with a URL that will be more helpful to other users in determining the copyright status.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source in a complete manner. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page or me at my talk page. Thank you. +Angr 07:01, 18 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

IP exemption[edit]

I have granted your account an exemption from IP blocking. This will allow you to edit through full blocks affecting your IP address when you are logged in.

Please read the page Wikipedia:IP block exemption carefully, especially the section on IP block exemption conditions.

Note in particular that you are not permitted to use this newly-granted right to edit Wikipedia via anonymous proxies, or disruptively. If you do, or there is a serious concern of abuse, then the right may be removed by any administrator.

Appropriate usage and compliance with the policy may be checked periodically, due to the nature of block exemption, and block exemption will be removed when no longer needed (for example, when the block it is related to expires).

I hope this will enhance your editing, and allow you to edit successfully and without disruption. PhilKnight (talk) 12:31, 12 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

File copyright problem with File:Laser Pointer Simulation.png[edit]

Thank you for uploading File:Laser Pointer Simulation.png. However, it currently is missing information on its copyright status. Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously. It may be deleted soon, unless we can determine the license and the source of the file. If you know this information, then you can add a copyright tag to the image description page.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their license and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thanks again for your cooperation. FinalRapture - 15:41, 31 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Light speed[edit]

Hi Email4mobile -- I enjoyed your Wikipedia:Reference desk/Science#Light speed question, but did not immediately understand -- BenRG's assertion that "Regardless of the motion of the apparatus through the ether, the light that emerges from the laser cavity will remain in line with the cavity." It only made sense when I considered, instead of a laser, a conventional bulb at the end of a long tube, used to restrict the light output to one particular direction. Such a "non-laser pointer" works by absorbing all light that is not traveling along its axis. Thus when directed at right angles to the motion through the supposed ether, it will still project light in line with its axis, but that direction is the combined result of the direction that the photons were emitted and of the relative motion through the ether.

Ariel wrote, "I think he's assuming that as the light travels down toward the floor, the motion of the ether "sweeps" it along, and it moves sideways." I think that the ether would "sweep" it along, but it does so from the start, while still inside the tube, resulting in no apparent change in the direction of the beam. I assume that the same would hold for fancier optics and lasers. 58.147.58.152 (talk) 00:22, 2 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

suggestion for original reporting[edit]

hi, i saw your comment on the Yemeni protests page about witnessing notable events.

You could try first publishing an original report in wikinews. See the paragraph "Original reporting - journalism by Wikinews contributors themselves. You yourself can write the news by providing first-hand reports of a news event. We only ask that you take detailed notes and present them with your article to support your work" on the page wikinews:Wikinews:Wikinews_needs_you!. If you have made a global login account, then you can use your same login, otherwise you need to create a new login.

There is a much fuller explanation of the principles at wikinews:Wikinews:Original_reporting. This means you would need to make detailed notes of what you yourself observe. An important sentence is "A good article will have multiple sources quoted, but every article must have multiple sources contacted behind-the-scenes." So i guess as a direct observer yourself, what you could do (it should be OK after the event, i presume) is ask other people who were there what they think they saw. Just because they were standing next to you (for example) does not mean that their memory of the events is 100% the same as yours. So take down notes (e.g. type into a text editor, or record audio) of what e.g. 2 or 3 other witnesses said they saw. You then are asked by the guideline, it seems to me (i only read it a few minutes ago!) to put all these notes on the discussion page of your article (anonymised is OK). It is only after looking at your detailed notes that you then write a summary. This way, other wikinewsians can judge if there is a more NPOV way to summarise the witnesses' statements.

You should try to get the other witnesses to tell you what they think they saw independently. That means you do not tell them what you think you saw, or at least, you wait until they have made their reports, and only after you have this recorded/written in detailed notes, you tell them your version. Most likely, you will find some contradictions in the detailed notes: this is normal.

If your report is accepted on Wikinews and there are no other sources available, then it seems to me that you should be able to use it as a source in Wikipedia articles. In principle, this depends on whether Wikinews' original reports "have a reputation for fact-checking and reliability".

Otherwise, "citation needed" claims risk getting deleted - depending on the attitude of the wikipedians editing the page.
