Cynthia Midgeley[edit]

Looks good so far! As we thought the article does need some more references to establish her wider notability so we'll need to keep an eye out for those and add in if possible. Couple of general points:

  1. The lede opening sentence of any new article needs to establish very clearly why this person (or topic) is notable/remarkable/significant/important for inclusion on Wikipedia. The Manual of Style WP:MOS has guidance for writing a good opening sentence which summarises/contextualises the person but equally you can view other biography articles on Wikipedia similar to your article to see how they have opened.
  2. Citations should back up every statement (place after full stop) or at least every paragraph.
  3. Headings are only capitalised on the first word only. You can check other articles for typical article headings used in biographies or visit Wikipedia's Manual of Style WP:MOS.
  4. If we can add 50-100 words and 3 or 4 (or more) references from reliable published secondary sources (more is always better for establishing wider notability) then we have something we can publish. For help publishing you can email me at ewan.mcandrew@ed.ac.uk or view our website page here.

Some more training guides (pdf) are available and on the Dashboard here. Thanks for joining us yesterday! Stinglehammer (talk) 15:58, 1 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Cynthia Midgley moved to draftspace[edit]

An article you recently created, Cynthia Midgley, is not suitable as written to remain published. It needs more citations from reliable, independent sources. (?) Information that can't be referenced should be removed (verifiability is of central importance on Wikipedia). I've moved your draft to draftspace (with a prefix of "Draft:" before the article title) where you can incubate the article with minimal disruption. When you feel the article meets Wikipedia's general notability guideline and thus is ready for mainspace, please click on the "Submit your draft for review!" button at the top of the page. Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia. This is a notice to inform you that a tag has been placed on Emcee47/sandbox5 requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a very short article providing little or no context to the reader. Please see Wikipedia:Stub for our minimum information standards for short articles. Also please note that articles must be on notable subjects and should provide references to reliable sources that verify their content.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. To reply, you can edit this section and use the {{replyto}} template to generate a notification to the other editor such as myself. Another option is to edit my talk page, adding a section there. And at WP:REPLYTOOL there's details of a tool that is intended to make this easier, but I haven't used it myself yet. Andrew🐉(talk) 16:32, 25 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

DYK for Isla Dewar[edit]

On 17 November 2021, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Isla Dewar, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that Scottish novelist Isla Dewar said "if ... a thing is not worth doing then it's worth doing fabulously, amazingly, with grace, style and panache"? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Isla Dewar. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Isla Dewar), and if they received a combined total of at least 416.7 views per hour (i.e., 5,000 views in 12 hours or 10,000 in 24), the hook may be added to the statistics page. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

@1Veertje@Kaybeesquared Hi both - I'm trying to link Alma Cullen to scripts where she was the scriptwriter. In 'all the kings men', her name appears in the info box. In List of Inspector Morse episodes, she appears in a grid called 'episode box' Any ideas? Emcee47 (talk) 16:44, 26 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Church of St Peter and St Paul[edit]

If you want to see the article about the Church of St Peter and St Paul in Edenbridge under construction keep an eye on User:Rodw/sandbox2.— Rod talk 17:03, 13 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks so much, Rod, for the great article - have received several favourable comments so far. Could this merit a 'Did you know' entry, as the medieval frescoes were only recently discovered? The Random Acts of Kindness Barnstar
Thank you for all your encouragement and positivity in the face of adversity - and for the page on Marion Conacher - whom I knew in her retirement and who was an inspiration (like you) Kaybeesquared (talk) 21:40, 17 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
HI Karen - how extraordinary that you knew Marion Conacher - agree she was an inspiration (don't think that would apply to me....) - you must tell us more when we next meet. So sorry you had to leave early. Ewan had to log off early as well, and Andrew and I stayed on to complete our entries, and had a great discussion. Am so enjoying learning new tricks, adn appreciate your encouragement - I need to learn how to send a barnstar! Emcee47 (talk) 10:31, 18 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

How to undo redirects[edit]

Viewing a redirect

After making a redirect at a page, you can no longer get to that page by using its name or by any link using that name. However, near the top of the destination page, a notice that you have been forwarded appears, with the source pagename as an active link to it. Click this to get back to the redirected page, showing the large bent arrow symbol and the destination for the redirect.

....

Found the above ' HELP" info. In plain English below (hopefully)

1. So once you have MOVEd a page from a sandbox, OPEN the new article you have made and you will see top LEFT a redirect link back to your sandbox. 2. Click on that link - it opens your SANDBOX with the redirect big arrow and name of the new page. Don't panic. 3. Click on EDIT and a new box appears which has a redirect item ticked in blue, UNTICK that one and save/publish.

4. You still have a box of text in your sandbox. Don't worry. 5. Click on EDIT SOURCE and delete everything you see. Publish that. 6. You can add the user sandbox header in again - In EDIT SOURCE mode add the words user sandbox between double curly brackets and Publish that.

PS then look at the talk page of the sandbox you were working on. For it you can use EDIT SOURCE and steps4-6! If these suggestions no good, try next session with Andrew or Ewan to go over it and improve the advice. Happy Moving! Kaybeesquared (talk) 12:42, 18 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Sending barnstars and food[edit]

Go to the person's user page or user talk page by searching User:personwikiname i.e. User:Emcee47 for you.

You will see on the top menu line a heart, click on that and it opens a selection of wikilove categories. In the barnstar menu there are different ones for different actions. Happy wikilove sending. Enjoy your Christmas and New Year - see you soon! Kaybeesquared (talk) 12:44, 18 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Image instructions[edit]

As discussed, I've put step-by-step instructions for the Marion Conacher case into a sub-page for you: User:Emcee47/images. An index entry has been put onto your main user page to help you find it when you need it. These instructions are appropriate for such a case -- a fair-use of a picture of a deceased person. If it's a picture you took yourself, it would be somewhat different. Andrew🐉(talk) 12:52, 18 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Mentoring[edit]

great to see Andrew now mentoring, and to help I have moved my 'tips' into subpages for you. Happy Christmas! Kaybeesquared (talk) 11:52, 21 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

  • There's a new mentor facility which I set up with Emcee47 as a trial mentee. That hasn't been doing much yet because there's another step which is required. To fully activate this, please could you go to the Preferences in the menu at the top of the page. The Preference required is in the User Profile tab and it's called "Newcomer homepage". If you tick this, then it provides you with an additional home page which provides help and suggestions – you'll see it as a tab next to your user page and talk page. This home page provides a link to the mentor and needs to be active for the mentoring feature to work.
The Newcomer homepage seems harmless and I've turned it on for myself to understand it. Kaybeesquared might like to try it too. She may find that a mentor has already been assigned automatically from a pool. If that choice doesn't seem suitable then I can explain how we can change this. Other organisers like Stinglehammer should try this too so we can discuss the feature at the next event.
Andrew🐉(talk) 12:41, 17 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Andrew set up the new Homepage and was allocated ARoseWolf who is not around much in the winter, which is when I wiki the most (usually) ...and I would also prefer to be asking someone I've met/contacted before.
I would not want to detract from your mentoring of Emcee47: so how can I find who else are the alternatives.
Thanks
Kaybeesquared (talk) 17:53, 17 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
The way it's done is that the new mentor uses the Special:ClaimMentee function so if you have someone particular in mind such as Stinglehammer then you'd have to ask them to do it. It would be no trouble for me to do this provisionally while we figure out how these features work -- I'm keen to give them a good trial ahead of next week's session so we can explain them to the others. Andrew🐉(talk) 18:24, 17 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
HI Andrew - I've been otherwise engaged for the last year (!) but have recently been asked about creating a Wikipedia entry, and will no doubt need some support - are you still able to be a mentor? Many thanks, Marnie Emcee47 (talk) 08:46, 21 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Sure. I usually log in to Wikipedia every day and am happy to help.
I was thinking of you recently as I visited Chartwell to take some photos for some articles that I'm working on. I'd not been to Kent since the Wiknic which you organised at Bore Place. That was good fun so please note that Chartwell is running a literary festival in September and that would be a good occasion for an associated Wiki event. Cielquiparle is interested too and is another useful contact.
Andrew🐉(talk) 09:10, 21 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
HI Andrew - I've been absent from Wiki editing for a while, tho very busy with committee. Am coming off the WMUK Board in September, and may find time to fit in with monthly WIR sessions. I've checked in with Ewan with some questions about a current article, and will see what he says. I've also signed up for WIR on 29 Sep. May need help uploading an image.
Was not aware of Chartwell literary festival - wonder how this was advertised locally. There is a major lit festival in Sevenoaks. Suggest you contact Natasha Iles, who organised the Bore Place event, to see if she might be interested. Will let you know when I get stuck! all the best, Marnie Emcee47 (talk) 10:20, 30 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I've signed up for the Edinburgh event in September too. If you need help with anything specific before then just ping me and I'll do what I can. Andrew🐉(talk) 10:55, 30 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Great - thanks so much for the offer. See you in September Emcee47 (talk) 18:58, 30 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
