Language groups[edit]

Hi, nice job with the language groups. I noticed the nyungar language article and linked the page Nyungar (or Noongar). Let me know if I can assist with western australian stuff. I must ask if you mind tidying up the language on your user page? Cheers, ☻ Fred|discussion|contributions 17:15, 8 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I hope you don't mind me pointing that out. I meant to say before, the Sea monsters wikiproject is a favourite of mine. I keep forgetting to join ... Best regards ☻ Fred|discussion|contributions 19:50, 8 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I like your user page. Lots of biota, the marbled gecko, Phyllodactylus marmoratus as I know it, is one of my favourites. They like my roses. Sorry to hear about your assimilation by the borg, how is that all going? Cheers mate, ☻ Fred|discussion|contributions 19:59, 8 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Songhai Empire[edit]

Hi, Enlil. first, i'd like to thank you on your interest in the songhai empire article. I have some concerns, however; I wanted to address them before making any edits and causing any drama. I noticed you put a nation bar on the far right side. It is obviously ripped (nearly verbatum) from the Mali Empire page. There's nothing wrong with putting a chart (the page needed one), but the information there is mostly wrong. The Mali Empire and Songhai Empire were very different and many of the attributes of the Mali Empire chart don't apply to Songhai. The reason i'm saying this is because I made the chart for the Mali Empire and did 90% of the research on that page.

I don't think it's neccesary to remove the chart altogether. Maybe we could work on it together to make it more up to snuff. Below are some glaring errors we need to address

  • Languages- we can probably just put Songhai here. There were speakers of many languages within Songhai, but the administrative tongue was Songhai.
  • Religion- the state religion of Songhai, in all its forms, was Islam. Ancestor worship was done by the peasantry, but the ruling classes were vehemently muslim. In Mali, the ruling class was muslim in name only. That's why I included ancestor worship and islam for that particular chart.
  • Government- definately not a constitutional monarchy. Mali was a constitutional monarchy cuz it actually had a constitution. Songhai had no such document. It is my opinion that Songhai's government was simply a MONARCHY.
  • Title of head of state- Mansa is completely wrong. Sonni was the title after 1275. Askiya was the title after 1493. i'll do some digging and find out what the title was before that. It definately was not Mansa. Only Mande peoples used that term.
  • Legislature- No evidence exist of a legislature and they did not borror the Gbara. The Gbara (Grand Assembly) only existed in the Mali Empire. We should probably omit this portion until we know for sure if they even had a legislature.
  • History- because this page is dedicated to the Songhai Empire and not necessarily its incarnations before reaching "imperial" status, I suggest putting one of the three proposals for the establishment and disestablishment of the Songhai Empire
    • c. 1000-1591. This date goes from the Songhai's establishment in Gao (c. 1000) to its fleeing to Niger after the Battle of Tondibi (1591).
    • 1275-1591. This is from the establishment of the Sonni kings who constantly asserted their independence from Mali until the moroccan invasion.
    • 1375-1591. This is from when Songhai gained full independence of Mali forever until the moroccan invasion.

Any of those dates is pretty legit. 690 is too early as we need a date when the Songhai were established at Gao. 1901 counts Songhai's continuation in Dendi. Although the Songhai administrative structure survived and even thrived in Dendi, counting it as a part of the Songhai Empire would be like counting the Roman Republic and Roman Empire as the same entity or perhaps the Roman Empire and the byzantine empire.

  • Currency- this is accurate enough I believe. I don't know if they used gold dust, though. i'll take a look around for more info
  • National symbol- needs removing. no data to back it up. that info is specifically from and for Mali.

Hope I haven't taken up too much of your time. please get back to me when you can. i look foward to hearing from u. Scott Free 17:21, 26 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Request for comment[edit]

Hi, I have some comments about the articles User:Numismaticman created. Please join the discussion at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Numismatics#Recent addition of "banknotes of ..." and "postal orders of ..." articles. Thanks. --ChoChoPK (球球PK) (talk | contrib) 03:46, 4 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Alderney and Ambliara numismatic articles[edit]

I saw nothing wrong with creating articles on Banknote of Alderney and Banknote of Ambliara, as both Alderney and the Indian Princely States' banknotes and coins are listed separately in the Krause and Pick catalogues. The articles are intended to be based on these catalogues, including the 'KM', 'P', 'PS', or another catalogue number in the articles. - (Numismaticman 06:56, 4 September 2007 (UTC))[reply]

Postal Order articles[edit]

What is wrong with creating articles for the postal orders of the various countries that issued them? They're numismatic items as well. - (Numismaticman 06:56, 4 September 2007 (UTC))[reply]

What do you want to know about them? I don't know much about them myself. The collecting and study of postal orders is a very new thing to me myself. - (Numismaticman 09:47, 4 September 2007 (UTC))[reply]

Postal Orders were used as currency[edit]

The Postal Orders of the Orange Free State and the Postal Orders of the South African Republic were used as currency during the Second Boer War. The British postal orders were used as currency during World War I and World War II. The modern British postal orders still depict the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, so they still look like banknotes to a certain degree. Yes, they can be paid into a bank account in the same way that you pay a cheque into one. - (Numismaticman 09:57, 4 September 2007 (UTC))[reply]

Cooksonia taxobox[edit]

Hi, Just to say thanks for popping a Taxobox on Cooksonia! All the best, Verisimilus T 20:55, 10 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Ooh, it's not very encyclopaedic, is it. Unfortunately, it's not a subject I know much about (oddly enough). I'll have a dabble when I get the chance... In terms of things to do, it'd be nice to see some of the Ediacaran biota, especially the more famous, better represented on WP soon, as the main article is in the queue to appear on the main page - I'd like the interested reader to be greeted by as many good articles as possible! And if you've got a scientific eye, you could always take a look at Cambrian explosion, which may hopefully be in the early stages of a push to FA status...

Template:New Zealand currency and coinage[edit]

Chochopk can you please review this template if you have time thankyou Template:New Zealand currency and coinage Enlil Ninlil 05:42, 24 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I'm sure you put a lot of thought into it. So I'm probably sorry for saying this. In general, I believe a nav box is appropriate when a majority of links exists. Template:Japanese currency and coinage still has many red links. I'd prefer improving existing articles first, and fork off more articles if necessary, instead of creating too many stub articles too fast. If I were to work on the New Zealand currency, I'd probably create Banknotes of the New Zealand dollar, move some contents over, improve it, expand the table, extend the history backward. And when that's done, I would probably improve coins, and if that's done, I would probably create Banknotes of the New Zealand pound. Well, you get the idea. And frankly, I don't like the idea of having a denomination as an article. It is against the currency taxonomy:
  • Currency (NZ£, NZ$)
    • Coins/banknotes
      • Series
        • Denomination
In some places where inflation is stable, but faster than developed countries, "1 dollar" or "1 unit" of something could be the largest coin 30 years ago, and now the smallest coin. They would have different meaning, and it's weird (at least to me) to compare them. Somebody probably started denomination as an article within USD, and the idea gets copied to other currencies. --ChoChoPK (球球PK) (talk | contrib) 08:30, 24 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hezbollah userbox[edit]

Hello. You used to have a userbox expressing support for Hezbollah, a group that is considered to be a terrorist organisation in many countries. I have removed the userbox because the consensus of editors indicates that it is unnecessarily divisive and inflammatory, and because it was based on the template {{User Hezbollah}} that has been repeatedly deleted for this reason. Such boxes are not allowed according to our rules about inappropriate user page content, and in accordance with Wikipedia not being a battleground. Please do not re-add this userbox, or you may be blocked from editing Wikipedia or your user page may be protected. For further information, please see the discussion at WP:ANI#Hezbollah userbox. Image Copyright problem
Image Copyright problem

Thank you for uploading Image:20080405082.jpg. However, it currently is missing information on its copyright status. Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously. It may be deleted soon, unless we can determine the license and the source of the image. If you know this information, then you can add a copyright tag to the image description page.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thanks again for your cooperation. NOTE: once you correct this, please remove the tag from the image's page. STBotI (talk) 07:04, 6 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hallo, When you create a page, could you add a stub type and a category? I've just spent ages drilling down through the categories to find the right one, and you presumably could have done it in an instant! Thanks. PamD (talk) 08:37, 7 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Proposed deletion of Concordant[edit]

A proposed deletion template has been added to the article Concordant, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but this article may not satisfy Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and the deletion notice should explain why (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised because even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. Do you want to opt out of receiving this notice? -- Andrew Mill 09:00, 8 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Orphaned non-free media (Image:Last finnish coins.jpg)[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Last finnish coins.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 12:09, 8 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Please don't remove WikiProject tags on talk pages when you add another tag. Best, Firsfron of Ronchester 03:20, 30 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

WikiProject Palaeontology[edit]

Hi Enlil,

I've taken the liberty of 'advertising' your new wikiproject to the guys at Dinos, pterosaurs, monsters from the deep and geology. See is some support, opinions and/or criticism can be drummed up. I've started making edits to the project too, hopefully thats okay. Cheers, Mark t young (talk) 15:39, 30 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

message[edit]

I'm sending this to all the wikiproject:mammals participants. There's a naming guideline up for discussion on the talk page, and the more people get involved the more valid any consensus drawn. Ironholds 19:14, 30 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Talk page tagging for WP:PALAEO[edit]

You may wish to contact User:Compwhizii, who operates a bot that could automate the talk page tagging process. (It must be a huge job to do by hand!!) Martin (Smith609 – Talk) 09:43, 4 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Tagging unreferenced[edit]

Hi Enlil,

When tagging articles as unreferenced or needing factual verification, can you use an edit summary? It makes the edit a lot easier to spot so that it can be corrected. Best wishes and happy editing, Firsfron of Ronchester 12:19, 8 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Project talk page tagging for WP:VIET[edit]

Blnguyen had requested me for the service of TinucherianBot to tag articles in the categories in Wikipedia:WikiProject Vietnam/Categories for the WikiProject Vietnam. I request the members to kindly have a look , carefully verify ALL the categories and remove all the possibly wrong categories. Please Dont misunderstand by being cautious here , as we have faced many issues with such huge scale bot tagging earlier. Once I get the final go ahead, I will start the bot with the final list. Thank you for choosing TinucherianBot for the project,. It is a pleasure working for this project...I have also left a note at Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Vietnam#Project_talk_page_tagging and request your comments there. You are receiving this message as you are a member of the project. Thanks -- Tinu Cherian - 06:05, 22 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on Palladium (Australian band), by another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because Palladium (Australian band) seems to be about a person, group of people, band, club, company, or web content, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is notable: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not assert the subject's importance or significance may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable.

To contest the tagging and request that administrators wait before possibly deleting Palladium (Australian band), please affix the template {{hangon}} to the page, and put a note on its talk page. If the article has already been deleted, see the advice and instructions at WP:WMD. Feel free to contact the bot operator if you have any questions about this or any problems with this bot, bearing in mind that this bot is only informing you of the nomination for speedy deletion; it does not perform any nominations or deletions itself. To see the user who deleted the page, click here CSDWarnBot (talk) 06:20, 21 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Scrolling lists[edit]

Please do not add scrolling lists, ever, to articles. In addition to breaking certain accessibility features, there is a bug in the MediaWiki printable.css which renders such lists unprintable if they overflow. For more information, please see MOS:SCROLL. siℓℓy rabbit (talk) 20:33, 30 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

At WikiProject Amphibians and Reptiles, we recently did a purge of the members list, which your name was on. Please re-add your username as well as your area of expertise at our list of participants if you plan to stay active in this Wikiproject. Also, a discussion is going on regarding the standardization of taxonomy in lizard articles, located in this section. We'd like to have some more voices in this matter. Dog breed[edit]

You asked: Does anyone know what this breed is, It maybe a mixed breed of the Poodle family. As there are so many breeds it is hard to tell. (Re Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Dogs#Identificasation) Hi, is that your dog? The only ways to reliably identify a breed are through the ancestry documented in its registration papers (or those of its parents) or with genetic testing. Mixed breeds aren't specific breeds. The coat looks poodleish, however, the nose looks too short and wide for a poodle; it is either mixed with something with a square nose or it may be one of the many Bichon type breeds.--Hafwyn (talk) 00:30, 25 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

A very large and widespread CopyVio problem[edit]

I want to alert all Project Gastropods staff to the fact that we currently have a very major CopyVio problem which compromises the integrity of the encyclopedia, and opens the door for legal action against Wikipedia. This problem is spread across a huge number of gastropod articles (approximately 800 to 1,000) and it also spills over into the other molluscan groups. I am asking ask everyone who is available to help out with this in whatever way they can, but please do so in an organized and unified fashion so we all know what is going on. It seems that all of the articles in the Category: Molluscs of New Zealand [1] contain a great deal of text that is copied verbatim or almost verbatim from the 1979 book by Powell, New Zealand Mollusca. I have had no experience in dealing with a crisis of this magnitude. Any help that any of you can offer or suggest is more than welcome. Invertzoo (talk) 21:13, 13 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

A piece of Jimbo's star
For all the hard work you Enlil Ninlil have put into helping make WikiProjectGastropods as great as it is, I award you a nice-sized chunk of the barnstar that Jimbo gave us at the first WikiConference New York on July 25 2009. Ahoy there! We're conducting our annual purge of the participants list for WikiProject Amphibians and Reptiles, in an effort to make sure our members stay current with events at the WikiProject. If you would like to renew your participation with the WikiProject, simply drop by the participants list and re-add your name to the list in alphabetical order using the following format: {{user|YOUR USERNAME HERE}}. Also feel free to add your specialties or points of interest. If you don't have the time or don't feel like rejoining, then ignore this request; you can rejoin at any time you'd like. WikiProject Algae[edit]

WikiProject Algae was started as a meeting space on Wikipedia for improving the taxonomic representations of the groups of organisms called algae. Please join other editors at the talk page (Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Algae) to discuss a higher level taxonomy for algae to be used on Wikipedia.

I saw your user name at the now inactive protist project. I see you work largely on paleontology projects (lame pun intended), but did not know if your interests might extend to extant algal species. I hope to expand the project to extinct groups of organisms and write articles on micropaleontology at some point. For now, it's modern species. Please stop by if you would like to help or if you have suggestions about what needs to be done. --68.127.232.132 (talk) 19:21, 11 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

You are now a Reviewer[edit]

Hello. Your account has been granted the "reviewer" userright, allowing you to review other users' edits on certain flagged pages. Pending changes, also known as flagged protection, is currently undergoing a two-month trial scheduled to end 15 August 2010.

Reviewers can review edits made by users who are not autoconfirmed to articles placed under pending changes. Pending changes is applied to only a small number of articles, similarly to how semi-protection is applied but in a more controlled way for the trial. The list of articles with pending changes awaiting review is located at Special:OldReviewedPages.

When reviewing, edits should be accepted if they are not obvious vandalism or BLP violations, and not clearly problematic in light of the reason given for protection (see Wikipedia:Reviewing process). More detailed documentation and guidelines can be found here.

If you do not want this userright, you may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. Courcelles (talk) 02:53, 17 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Announcement[edit]

Hello! I'm The Arbiter, one of the coordinators for WikiProject Zoo. I am proud to announce the launch of a new portal: Portal:Zoos and Aquariums! ZooPro, ZooFari, and I worked hard to create a new portal for information on zoos, aquariums, and the associated projects and articles on Wikipedia. If you could head on over, take a look at our work, and maybe learn some more about zoos and Wikiproject Zoo, it would be great! Cheers and Happy Editing!

At WikiProject Amphibians and Reptiles, in which you are listed as a member, we're working on a pretty massive backlog (1000+ articles!) of unassessed articles. We would appreciate it greatly if you would help assess the articles in the link. It's simple to do!

  1. Read over the article.
  2. On the discussion page, look for the {{AARTalk}} template. Add in a "class" and "importance" parameter if the template does not have them already. Example: {{AARTalk|class= |importance= }}
  3. For the class, fill in the article's quality using the WikiProject's quality scale: stub, start, C, B, GA, A, or FA. Most unassessed articles will probably be stubs or start class articles, and definitely B or lower.
  4. For the importance, fill in the article's importance to the WikiProject using the importance scale: low, mid, high, or top. Most unassessed articles will probably be low or mid importance.
  5. Then you're done!

It's not a difficult task, but there's a lot to get done. Our hope is that we can chip through the backlog and assess every article within the auspices of the project. Thanks, bibliomaniac15 00:31, 12 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Invitation to help assess Wikipedia:WikiProject Gastropods[edit]

Hi. I am inviting members of some WikiProjects to take part in evaluating their projects in order to help the Wikimedia Foundation better understand such projects from the inside, to encourage reflection on best practices, and to compile a list of best practices as recommended by a number of projects. I am contacting you because you are listed as an active member of Wikipedia:WikiProject Gastropods. Having witnessed that project's work in the past in my volunteer capacity, I'd very much like to include it. I hope that you will have time and interest in participating. As much or as little as you would like to supply would be gratefully received. The assessment questions are posted at Wikipedia:WikiProject Gastropods/Self-assessment. I will myself steer clear of the page until after any discussion seems to have become dormant, at which point I will ask questions to make sure that I am developing a good overview of opinions. Thanks. --Maggie Dennis (WMF) (talk) 12:57, 7 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Categorisation of Macau and Hong Kong[edit]

Can you help look into the following problem? From what I observed, many Macau and Hong Kong categories are subcats of the corresponding by-country parent categories (by their status of dependencies), and are subcats of the corresponding China or PRC categories with a <spacebar>Macau or <spacebar>Hong Kong catsort (in some cases an asterisk is used instead in place of the <spacebar> tho). But when I apply it to other categories, SchmuckyTheCat (talk · contribs) undid them en masse. Please response at WP talk:Categorisation. 218.250.159.25 (talk) 21:00, 15 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Science lovers wanted![edit]

Science lovers wanted!
Hi! I'm serving as the wikipedian-in-residence at the Smithsonian Institution Archives until June! One of my goals as resident, is to work with Wikipedians and staff to improve content on Wikipedia about people who have collections held in the Archives - most of these are scientists who held roles within the Smithsonian and/or federal government. I thought you might like to participate since you are interested in the sciences! Sign up to participate here and dive into articles needing expansion and creation on our to-do list. Feel free to make a request for images or materials at the request page, and of course, if you share your successes at the outcomes page you will receive the SIA barnstar! Thanks for your interest, and I look forward to your participation! SarahStierch (talk) 03:49, 21 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Enilil! I'm so happy you signed up to participate in the project! Thank you. I do have a question, I saw that you signed up to participate in the staff participants section. I just wanted to clarify that you are Smithsonian Institution Archives staff? If so, great, we haven't met yet, but hopefully will. And if not, we can move you up with the rest of "non-SIA staff" folks. Thanks again and I can't wait to see what you find inspiration in the work on on our to-do list!
