Updating demographic data for places in The Bronx (and elsewhere in New York City) with better sources

I had seen the edits to various places in The Bronx to "update" demographic data. While I recognize that the sources that had been added in the past (and are still in the articles) are imperfect, especially in regard to combined neighborhoods, the changes made today seemed to me to be problematic; It seems that you felt the same based on your subsequent edits. But the question remains that there may be sources of neighborhood demographics that are more granular than the sources I had added. Do you see any alternate sources? @Alansohn: According to NYC.gov's website, the American Community Survey collects estimates about once per year, but it is only accurate to the level of a neighborhood tabulation area, none of which are less than 15,000 people. The other source of data is the U.S. Census, which only happens every 10 years but is accurate down to the census tract (which is about 4,000 people on average). So either we go with the broader estimates that are available now, or wait until next year to get really detailed data. epicgenius (talk) 17:39, 29 November 2019 (UTC)
I suggest sticking with the more widely known and reliable Census data--unless there is an area that is very rapidly expanding or declining, in which case a supplementary note can be added. YMMV. Bellagio99 (talk) 22:40, 2 December 2019 (UTC)

Medium-Sized Trouble in Rapidly Declining Little Chinatown

User:68.195.237.122's edits to articles related to Chinatowns in New York City have largely consisted of ungrammatical and often nonencyclopedic claims of rises and falls of Chinatowns in different parts of the city, based on original search with some crystal ball claims mixed in. Many of these articles are largely based on content that violates WP:OR and / or WP:CRYSTAL. Are you seeing this as I am? Alansohn (talk) 14:54, 4 December 2019 (UTC)

Alansohn, yes, I've reverted some of them as unsourced. I think I left a message on their page a month ago, but with no response. The grammar could always be improved - this user seems to go on tangents and use hyperbole when writing about Chinatowns - but the lack of sources is a bigger problem to me. epicgenius (talk) 15:00, 4 December 2019 (UTC)
This edit's claim about "rapidly immense declination" just might be the world's worst example of the hyperbole you mention in the history of the Universe. Grammar is reparable. It's the lack of sources for those claims that might be valid and crystal-ball claims about predicted changes that are the real issue. Alansohn (talk) 15:31, 4 December 2019 (UTC)
Now with the rapidly immense declination of the Fuzhou enclave in Manhattan's Chinatown and with Brooklyn's Sunset Park Fuzhou enclave still increasingly growing large, it is leading to the high likelihood that Brooklyn's Little Fuzhou will be the only large Fuzhou enclave in New York City to remain in the future. Yep that's bad. I agree that the lack of sources is a bigger issue than the grammar, though. @Fabrickator: Thanks for the note. I was merely trying to standardize all of the references, and in doing so, wanted to cut out any part of the quote that wasn't relevant. In general, regular service doesn't start exactly on the day of opening, so I thought it was unnecessary. However, feel free to restore the quote if you wish. Copy edit notes for Barren Island

Some notes on my copy edit of Barren Island, Brooklyn:

  • I reoranized the lead a bit. I wanted the first paragraph to describe its current state, but being a former island felt it was necessary to address that as well. This also gets a bit tricky in the Geography section, because the geography has changed considerably along with the events described in History. I feel that the Geography section ought to at least mention some of the other modifications, first the dredging of canals and later the infilling of the interior marshlands for the airfield. Hopefully there isn't too much redundancy with the history section; the objective should be to give enough context so the reader can understand the material as they progress through the article.
  • I created a redirect to the article from South Flatlands, and added that to the lead.
  • Originally, Rockaway Beach was located to Barren Island's east, and the two islands' tips were aligned. I added "southern" before "tips", is that right?
  • By the late 1920s, the now-1,300-acre (530 ha) Barren Island's eastern side. This construction is a little weird. I moved the 1,300 acres down a bit.
  • By 1918, the island processed 600 horse carcasses per year; it had once processed the same number of corpses in 12 days. Would it be better to say, "three percent" or "one-thirtieth of its former production/capacity"?
  • I tweaked some of the convert templates to state small numbers in words (but numerals for the secondary abbreviated units). Feel free to revert.
  • No trace of the island remains → No trace of the community remains
  • When you're going for FAC, please ensure that all images have alt text. |alt=Map of the Gateway National Recreation Area's Jamaica Bay unit merely repeats the caption; the alt text should describe the encyclopedic content of the image for those who can't see it. For the lead image, I might use "A bay with grasses and sedges on the foreground shore, a marina toward the far shore, and a large bridge in the distant background". That describes the image while the caption "View of Barren Island from Dead Horse Bay" provides context.
  • I feel that the article could use a brief treatment of the current recreational/conservation use, summarizing relevant parts of Gateway National Recreation Area.
