NYCS crime section: possible plagiarism issue (resolved)

Formerly titled "NYCS article - Crime section - Plagiarism?"

Please see the note I made on the talk page of NYCS: it looks like you took some liberties with copy/pasting text from nycsubway.org's 1970s and 1980s history pages when you edited the Crime section in April. I'm not an expert on the exact Wikipolicies wrt plagiarism, but I'm assuming the current version of the article doesn't follow the rules.

Level Crossing (talk) 23:09, 30 November 2014 (UTC)

@Level Crossing: The text, as with other text in NYC Subway articles, is used with prior permission from the NYCSubway.org website (so it's not plagiarism), but I have paraphrased it a little and also cited the website as a source. However, if it is indeed plagiarism, I will correct it. Thank you for pointing this out. – Epicgenius (talk) 00:57, 1 December 2014 (UTC)

Lincoln and holland tunnel

Hi sorry for the edits but how can i add to these two pages. What I wrote is correct and a exsiting position in the PANYNJ. This group of emergency service people perform these duites everyday. I work for the PANYNJ in this position so what I wrote is accurate. Please guide me on how can I leave this info on those pages thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Gwb028 (talkcontribs) 09:31, 30 November 2014 (UTC)

We can mention the text in a short sentence with a source. Epicgenius (talk) 14:19, 1 December 2014 (UTC)

NYPD Misconduct

I see you have reverted again on New York City Police Department corruption and misconduct, I would suggest you self revert because although it is a contentious issue and I agree with you on a lot of points, you did violate 3RR and it won't help your argument by violating it, but the other user still needs to go to talk with the issue. - SantiLak (talk) 01:31, 7 December 2014 (UTC)

@SantiLak: And that I have just done. I also cleaned up the POV and integrated into the rest of the article. Epicgenius (talk) 01:39, 7 December 2014 (UTC)
Thanks, there definitely was a pov in those sections that needed to be cleaned up, I appreciate it. - SantiLak (talk) 01:41, 7 December 2014 (UTC)
No problem. We may still need to use the talk page and the other user's talk, though, if any other reverts arise. Epicgenius (talk) 01:43, 7 December 2014 (UTC)
It's on my watchlist and I will keep a lookout for any reverts as I'm sure you will as well. - SantiLak (talk) 01:53, 7 December 2014 (UTC)

December 2014: edit summary usage, supposedly

Information icon Hi there! Thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia.

When editing Wikipedia, there is a field labeled "Edit summary" below the main edit box. It looks like this:

Edit summary (Briefly describe your changes)

Please be sure to provide a summary of every edit you make, even if you write only the briefest of summaries. The summaries are very helpful to people browsing an article's history.

Edit summary content is visible in:

Please use the edit summary to explain your reasoning for the edit, or a summary of what the edit changes. Thanks! Epeefleche (talk) 04:07, 9 December 2014 (UTC)

I'm already aware of this, but thank you. Epicgenius (talk) 04:08, 9 December 2014 (UTC)
Then kindly use the edit summary to explain your reasoning for the edit, or a summary of what the edit changes. You, while aware of the request, failed to do so. Epeefleche (talk) 04:12, 9 December 2014 (UTC)
An edit summary is strongly recommended but surely not required. Epicgenius (talk) 04:13, 9 December 2014 (UTC)
BTW, we don't need that many words to express one idea in the article. That's what I fixed. Epicgenius (talk) 04:16, 9 December 2014 (UTC)
I find it curious that you followed me to a page I had edited, directly after I warned you above about another page, to undo (among others) edits I had made here. Please take this as a warning for wikihounding, and disruptive editing. I'm surprised -- you know better. If you continue in this behavior I'll have to ask that your behavior be looked at by others. For now, I'll simply ask you to stop wikihounding me, and stop editing disruptively. We all have better things to do than have your behavior here examined at AN/I. Epeefleche (talk) 04:50, 9 December 2014 (UTC)
Okay. Take me to ANI; I don't care. Your wikihounding claim will quickly be thrown out because it's a content dispute, not a behavior dispute, and you need more than one article to prove this. I didn't know you even edited the page, because it was by chance that I got there (and your last edit was on 14 September). Besides, if you actually had a civil discussion on the talk page rather than blatantly reverting, we wouldn't have this sort of mess. Epicgenius (talk) 04:51, 9 December 2014 (UTC)
It's obvious wikhounding. It's obvious -- after I warned you, my very next edit was as to whether a person lived in RC. Your follow-up edit? You deleted his image (along with others) from the RC article. That's not appropriate -- nor was your rationale anything close to a legitimate "content dispute" rationale, and nobody is fooled by the fact that of all articles you came to that one ... out of the millions here ... direct after my edit. Frankly, I don't appreciate it, and I don't appreciate your suggesting that it's just chance -- duckish behavior strips you of AGF. That's not allowed. You've been here long enough to know better, and have been called out for this as recently as earlier this year by another editor at AN/I. Just cut it out. Epeefleche (talk) 05:04, 9 December 2014 (UTC)
That other claim was false. But if you don't want me to do it, then OK. Epicgenius (talk) 13:30, 9 December 2014 (UTC)

Understanding

Who are you to decide the number of images that a page can have?

It is a quality image of the center of Midtown. Normally editors communicate, via talk pages to come to a consensus, but it looks like you seem to dominate this area of Wikipedia, so shall I ask for your permission to contribute to this area of Wiki in the future?

IMHO it is impolite and not in the spirit of good faith to not make an effort to communicate. Please use the talk pages before you simply revert my contributions. It looks like your edits, according to the talk chats above seem to be on the abrasive side, that is not necessary here mr genius. Thank you. ;) talk→ WPPilot  19:26, 11 December 2014 (UTC)

New York Cityscape Formatting

@Epicgenius: Hi, don't know if you're aware, but I lose the Cityscape caption (entirely) with your formatting. I'm sure I'm not the only one. Are you aware why this might be and how it can be (simply) fixed? If not, we'll have to go back to the other editor's formatting, because people should not be expected to alter their browsers in any significant way to accommodate this. Thanks. Best, Castncoot (talk) 23:00, 11 December 2014 (UTC)

@Castncoot: OK, I'll see what I can do. I thought that upgrading to div would fix the outdated center HTML tag problem. Epicgenius (talk) 23:30, 11 December 2014 (UTC)
It's an equals sign in the parameter. Whenever there is an equals sign in an unnamed parameter, it must then be numbered according to the order that the parameter appears. I fixed my typo. (SMH). Thanks for the notice, Epicgenius (talk) 23:35, 11 December 2014 (UTC)

VisualEditor newsletter—December 2014

Screenshot showing how to add or remove columns from a table

Did you know?

Basic table editing is now available in VisualEditor. You can add and remove rows and columns from existing tables at the click of a button.

The user guide has more information about how to use VisualEditor.

Since the last newsletter, the Editing Team has fixed many bugs and worked on table editing and performance. Their weekly status reports are posted on Mediawiki.org. Upcoming plans are posted at the VisualEditor roadmap.

VisualEditor was deployed to several hundred remaining wikis as an opt-in beta feature at the end of November, except for most Wiktionaries (which depend heavily upon templates) and all Wikisources (which await integration with ProofreadPage).

Recent improvements

Basic support for editing tables is available. You can insert new tables, add and remove rows and columns, set or remove a caption for a table, and merge cells together. To change the contents of a cell, double-click inside it. More features will be added in the coming months. In addition, VisualEditor now ignores broken, invalid rowspan and colspan elements, instead of trying to repair them.

You can now use find and replace in VisualEditor, reachable through the tool menu or by pressing ⌃ Ctrl+F or ⌘ Cmd+F.

You can now create and edit simple <blockquote> paragraphs for quoting and indenting content. This changes a "Paragraph" into a "Block quote".

Some new keyboard sequences can be used to format content. At the start of the line, typing "*  " will make the line a bullet list; "1.  " or "# " will make it a numbered list; "==" will make it a section heading; ": " will make it a blockquote. If you didn't mean to use these tools, you can press undo to undo the formatting change. There are also two other keyboard sequences: "[[" for opening the link tool, and "{{" for opening the template tool, to help experienced editors. The existing standard keyboard shortcuts, like ⌃ Ctrl+K to open the link editor, still work.

If you add a category that has been redirected, then VisualEditor now adds its target. Categories without description pages show up as red.

You can again create and edit galleries as wikitext code.

Looking ahead

VisualEditor will replace the existing design with a new theme designed by the User Experience group. The new theme will be visible for desktop systems at MediaWiki.org in late December and at other sites early January. (You can see a developer preview of the old "Apex" theme and the new "MediaWiki" one which will replace it.)

The Editing team plans to add auto-fill features for citations in January. Planned changes to the media search dialog will make choosing between possible images easier.

2014 NYPD officer killings

Hey, I noticed you changed your vote from support to oppose at ITNC but didn't say why. Would you mind telling me why you changed your mind? Everymorning talk 16:05, 23 December 2014 (UTC)

@Everymorning: I saw that the candidate was getting heavily opposed. I read over the opposers' reasons, and decided that my reasoning was kind of off; I also realized that police shootings are actually quite common, and this shooting would be mostly ignored because it is one of hundreds or thousands of police killings this year, but just happens to be more heavily publicized. I'd still support ALT1 though. Best, Epicgenius (talk) 21:33, 23 December 2014 (UTC)

Editorial comment

(originally titled "Please don't play the fool...")

You know by now what "Better before" or "Not improvements" means. Other editors are not your teachers, we aren't here to educate you. If your edits are reverted because they do not improve the article, you should examine them to figure out why, and then ask specific questions if you are unsure. What you should never do is revert back in full, which is, as you very well know, the first step in edit warring.

You've come a long way since I first came across you as an editor, but you still must be aware that your judgment about layout is suspect, and your ability to write is not commensurate with a popular encyclopedia for the general public. Writing must be at a post-high school, early college quality, and you often do not reach that -- as with your use of the word "neighborhood" numerous times in the same sentence. Such writing is repetitive and boring to the reader, and good writers avoid it.

The next time an editor tells you that your edits do not improve the article, please don't assume that they're wrong, assume that you need to get better at what you're trying to do. BMK (talk) 00:45, 27 December 2014 (UTC)

@BMK: I am not trying to be antagonistic. Often, I fail to proofread my writing, which may have errors after I save the page (even though, contrary to what you may be assuming, my writing is not a puerile, high school quality). However, the content that I am adding to the article is not fictionalized, and although you are mostly correct in undoing the stylistic edits, you may fail to see the content or factual corrections that I added to the article on top of these. I'll stop reverting, but please remember that we're trying to achieve the same goal: to improve the encyclopedia.

On a side note, I will open discussions on these articles' talk pages, then you can discuss which stylistic faults need to be fixed. Epicgenius (talk) 23:11, 27 December 2014 (UTC)

On further examination, your edits with the summaries "Better before" or "Not improvements" are not actually that harmful. There's nothing wrong with adding columns to reflists (as you did in this edit to Triborough Bridge) and also to the popcult section of Delancey Street. Also, for stylistic changes that I make, please stop using WP:RBK for non-blatant vandalism or not clearly unhelpful edits like in this edit; if you have a problem, you should discuss it on the article's talk page, because while you may think it's unhelpful, others may not concur. While I may not be right in all cases, neither are you. Please, in cases like this, don't mass undo edits like these. Next time, we should first discuss on the talk page or on each other's user discussion pages. Thanks, Epicgenius (talk) 23:30, 27 December 2014 (UTC)

Just FYI

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority is a state agency, not a city one, and it's name is simply "Metropolitan Transportation Authority" with no preceding "New York" (or "New York City"). It was created from the merger of the Triborough Bridge and Tunnel Authority, the New York City Subway, the Manhattan and Bronx Surface Transit Operating Authority (MABSTOA), the Metro-North lines of Penn Central and various other agencies and facilities. BMK (talk) 20:49, 28 December 2014 (UTC)

I just noted that a lot of NYC subway articles make this error, not just the 181st Street Station article which I was editing, so if my assumption that you added it was incorrect, I apologize for jumping to conclusions. BMK (talk) 21:32, 28 December 2014 (UTC)
Thanks. The "New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority" was added way before I started editing, though. You may want to bring the issue to WT:NYCPT. Epicgenius (talk) 22:14, 28 December 2014 (UTC)

Fulton Street Layout

Hello Epicgenious. I noticed you reverted the layout of the Fulton Street Station complex. Although some of the lines are on the same level, a separating wall is not accurate on the layout of the station. For the Broadway-7th Avenue Line, is in fact on B2 level due to the fact that that station has a mezzanine [1]. Here is a photo of the mezzanine. [2]. Also each station is not separated by a separating wall, as opposed to say Lexington Ave-63 Street Station on the F line, rather each line is on its own independent tunnel. Hope this can clarify the layout a little better. Thanks — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ebernardez (talkcontribs) 21:18, 30 December 2014 (UTC)

@Ebernardez: Feel free to revert if you want. However, now with the completion of the Fulton Center, all of the levels are basically connected via the second-basement-level mezzanine, which is broken up by said walls. I think we can separate the first level's platforms and move Broadway-7 Av Line platforms to second-basement-level. Epicgenius (talk) 21:46, 30 December 2014 (UTC)
@Epicgenius: Ok sounds good. Thanks. Ebernardez (talk) 10:55, 31 December 2014 (UTC)
