Oregon Ducks nickname question[edit]

I just created {{Oregon Ducks men's basketball navbox}} and used {{Oregon Ducks football navbox}} as my style guide. In the football navbox, it shows that Oregon used Webfoots as their nickname through the 1977–78 season, therefore I also used that nickname for the basketball navbox until 1977–78. Do you know if the basketball team adopted "Ducks" sooner than that? If so, could you please revise the basketball navbox to reflect the correct historical name used at those times? (related: 1944–45 Oregon Ducks men's basketball team would need to be moved to Webfoots if that was the nickname back then). Thanks! Jrcla2 (talk) 16:20, 11 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

This is kind of a murky topic but I think you're correct. Short answer is that the '44-45 team is solidly in Webfoots territory so that article should be moved. After WWII is when things get murky. Contemporary sports reports from the 40s through the 70s use both terms interchangeably; at some point, Webfoots changes from the official nickname (adopted in 1932) to more of a cutesy alternate nickname. That seems to happen sometime in the '60s, but the official adoption of Ducks doesn't happen until 1978. This article from 1976 shows me that traditionalists don't like the increasing use of the "unofficial" name but also seems to reflect that the move is well underway if not a done deal. Yep, in the days before trademarks and corporate licensing deals, a nickname was just a nickname! I could add that I remember enough of sports in the 70s to know that nobody I knew ever referred to the "Webfoots"; but then again, they were so terrible nobody bothered to call them anything at all! --Esprqii (talk)

Most-played rivalry page[edit]

As long as I've been editing the Most played rivalries in NCAA Division I FBS page I've always used the same order for the rivalries. As far as I know, the source I used to create the article in the first place (the NCAA record book) uses the same order:

  1. No. of games played
  2. Season/year the first game was played (oldest first)
  3. Season/year the last game was played (more recent games last)

so it's not really arbitrary at all, the main problem is when people update during a season after rivalry A is played, but rivalry B is still to be played. In general there shouldn't be any reordering during a season, but when I do reorder I take into account the games expected to be played. And since many teams play a rival for their last game, there are many games in the article that are still to be played in the 2013 season.

Fair enough. The Texas/Texas A&M rivalry right at the top is out of order which led me to believe there was no order in place. I still think it's better to keep it updated throughout the season, because I believe most readers will not trust the accuracy of an article if they see anything out of date. Thank you. I did not see the citation at the bottom of the article, and this article has a lot of vandalism so that was my first instinct. That interview is actually a couple of years old, published right after the victim's death so there is some discrepancy on the dates; I'm inclined to believe the victim's account though. I'm actually surprised that article hasn't been included as a source yet as I do recall it when it was published when we had some discussion about the victim's anonymity. Wiki Loves Pride[edit]

You are invited to participate in Wiki Loves Pride, a global campaign to create and improve LGBT-related content at Wikipedia during the month of June, culminating with a multinational edit-a-thon on June 21. Actually, I did use that new page to track down a couple of the items I was cleaning up (the random "special" notes), so thanks for creating it! I wonder if we should modify the {{CFB Standings}} pages to create yet another footnote for "selected as bowl representative" for the old days where bowl assignments were made in smoke-filled rooms. Those wartime games against military teams are tricky. I have no doubt the game really occurred, and if WSU includes it in their records, I'd be inclined to mention it. The footnotes are fine. What is especially interesting to me is that from what I can tell, the 362nd Infantry Regiment was part of the 191st Brigade, which in turn was part of the 91st Division stationed at Fort Lewis. Why is this interesting? The 1918 Rose Bowl featured the Fort Lewis team, in which Dick Romney (yes, of *those* Romneys) scored the only touchdown for Fort Lewis and was in the 362nd Infantry. I just added some info on Romney's page about this. Seems like an article about the Fort Lewis team, or wartime football would be very interesting. International Women's Day Wikipedia Edit-a-thon, Oregon Jewish Museum, Thursday, March 7[edit]

The Oregon Jewish Museum and Center for Holocaust Education, in partnership with social practice artist Shoshana Gugenheim and as part of the Art+Feminism Project, will host the 2nd Annual International Women's Day Wikipedia Edit-a-thon to edit and/or create Wikipedia articles for Jewish women artists. The event will be held at the museum on Thursday, March 7 from 4 to 8 pm. Pre-registration is preferred but not required. Members of the public are invited to come to the museum to learn about the editing process, its history, its impact, and how to do it. We aim to collaboratively edit/enter 18 Jewish women artists into the canon. Support will be provided by an experienced local Wikipedian who will be on site to teach and guide the process. This edit-a-thon will serve as both a public art action and a public educational program. Participants will have an opportunity to select an artist/s ahead of time or on site.
