WikiProject Classical music Rating

Ciao, Etincelles. Anyone familiar with the criteria can rate a page, though of course you're encouraged not to assess your own work. There's no formal process for getting an assessment; sometimes editors monitor Category:Unassessed Classical music articles and clear it out when it gets full, but more often than not this doesn't happen, and pages only get assessed when editors come across their talkpages. You could try asking for an assessment at the project talkpage, or if you'd like to link the article you want assessed, I can assess it though I don't edit classical music articles. Hi, please read my comments on the talk page of this article. If you need further guidance, I suggest you have a look at Wikipedia:WikiProject Opera/Copyright guidelines. Many editors are at first unaware of the strict policies on Wikipedia concerning copyright infringement. But you really need to take this on board. Pasting in the text and then trying to "change it around" is not going to work. Either write the article entirely in your own words or use quote marks and clearly attribute the author (James Leonard) in the actual text of the article, although note that extensive quoting from a single copyright source is not permitted. I've re-edited the article and left you extensive guidance on the talk page. Please read it. It's not a question of us coming to an agreement. Wikipedia's copyright policy is non-negotiable. I'm telling you this for your own benefit. Wikipedia is really cracking down on copyright violations. Take a look at this page. I'd hate to see an enthusiastic and knowledgeable editor get into trouble. When editors are found to repeatedly infringe copyright, and disregard warnings, they seriously run the risk of blocking (not by me, I'm not an administrator) and having their edits reverted on sight. I've corrected the spelling and punctuation errors. I also put "miniature" in quotes, because that was the original author's characterisation and choice of words, not your own. It's now OK from a close paraphrasing point of view, but what you have now isn't well written. The phrase "gives a desired effect" doesn't mean "effective" and is virtually meaningless unless you previously indicate what Borodin's desired effect was. That's what's wrong with working from a pasted-in a text and then trying to 'fix' it rather than internalizing the ideas and writing them in your own words without the original text in front of you. You can easily end up distorting the intended meaning and run the continual risk of paraphrasing too closely. Anyhow, whether it's well-written or not is a separate issue for you and other content contributors to the article to work out. The Last Romantic

I think there's a photo of Horowitz taken at the time of The Last Romantic somewhere on Wikimedia commons, that might go at the head of this article. It was at the head of the Horowitz article until about a year ago, when it was replaced with another photo.THD3 (talk) 18:39, 19 November 2009 (UTC)

To satisfy copyright use, it is not enough to direct to the source, Allmusic or the Vancouver Chopin Society, you must put the copyrighted text between parentheses and, in the footnote, give the name of the author with house of publication or website. Also, replacing a word here & there within a copyrighted text is not satisfactory either. It is still "copying".

I'd like to second Frania W.'s remarks. There are still substantial parts of this article with close paraphrasing. You really need to read and take on board the guidelines in WP:Close paraphrase. All you've done is slightly change a word or two and/or remove some intervening material. You also have unattributed quotes in the article, and have put words in quotes which are not exact quotes. Thank you for the barnstar. I see you've created the Vladimir_Horowitz_discography article. I'm ready to assist as time permits. As it happens, I have his complete authorized discography as well as some rare items, and am preparing a book of essays on Horowitz including my own reviews. If you need any help with recording dates, catalogue numbers, etc., let me know. I recently replaced many of my reissues with the complete Original Jacket collection boxed set, but I have yet to sell my old copies, so I can get this info for you.THD3 (talk) 21:14, 28 January 2010 (UTC)

You deserve it. Any help would be greatly appreciated as it has been very difficult to find release dates and I am concerned about the accuracy of them. As I only have a few Horowitz CD's I cannot find the accurate information.

Covers in discographies

Etincelles, I'm very sorry but album covers used in discographies as you are wanting to do are not permissible under our policies and guidelines on the use of fair use images on Wikipedia. Whether it's fair use or not isn't really the point. Wikipedia's policies and guidelines on this issue are more restrictive than the law permits. I refer you specifically to the very first point at Wikipedia:Non-free_content#Images_2, which says that "An album cover as part of a discography" is an unacceptable use of a non-free image. If you look at Category:Classical music discographies, you will note that not a single article within that category contains a non-free image, with the exception of one article, The Complete Mozart Edition, which is a single edition piece and not a discography in reality. There was one other, Stellenbosch University Choir discography, that had two non-free images on it both of which had been recently added by an inexperienced editor (less than 150 edits). I've corrected that error.

Please understand, the really is no wiggle room on this. I'm going to revert your re-addition of the album covers, and also tag all of the album cover images as orphaned. Per WP:NFCC, all non-free images must be in use on at least one article in order for them to remain on Wikipedia. Tagging these images as orphaned allows a seven day period in which the images might find some other home on Wikipedia, and is not cause for immediate speedy deletion.

If you think this is somehow in error, or believe that Vladimir Horowitz discography deserves some special exception from this policy, please take the matter up at Wikipedia talk:Non-free content. Vladimir Horowitz - The Complete Original Jacket Collection

Also, the reference forVladimir Horowitz, Solo Recordings 1930–1936 refers to the album as Solo Recordings 1928–1936, is this referenced to the correct album? My mistake, I fixed it. The only major thing missing is Discovered Treasures, which came out in 1992. There are a few scattered items on minor labels, like Urania and Iron Needle, but these are rip-offs of material that is available elsewhere. [1]THD3 (talk) 21:53, 9 February 2010 (UTC)

You really got the ball rolling on this page! I've added the remaining volumes of the collection, and begun adding work lists. This should be easier than it was with Horowitz because Rubinstein tended make more "edition" type recordings, e.g., Chopin Polonaises, Mazurkas, etc. I may have to pull some of these recordings and listen to them again. On the worklists, I am using symbols (*, +, and ^) to clarify which performers are participating with Rubinstein in which pieces. The Wagner article is in need of some help

We're in a bit of a pickle in the Wagner discussion page. The issues concerns Social class (sociology) and the phrase supposedly common Germanic past and has now been dismissed by some editors as inconsequential. Furthermore, the name Other interpretations in the article dismisses the general review and broader Wagner analysis to a subcategory under Controversies (mainly the topic of anti-Semitism). Please help. Just take fast look and maybe help in the balancing act. Thank you
