HDI map[edit]

Thanks so much for the colour-blind friendly map on the HDI page. Brilliant!

I replaced the colour-dependent map with a clickable link map showing the urban areas. I hope this is adequate, sorry for the delay. Asdfasdf1231234 (talk) 18:24, 18 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

C P Halt[edit]

Yes, you stick out your arm vertically. If you are onboard, you inform the guard.

Trains are travelling at a max of 25 mph on the stretch of line near the halt. This gives them plenty of time to slow down. Despite the trees, sight is good.

This occurs on National Rail lines a lot as well. In these cases, trains always slow down so they could stop, and sound the horn.

Bewdley photo[edit]

Hello. Thanks for adding the riverside photo: it's a classic view that was missing before. My only concern is that what it shows is now rather out of date: the grass and trees on Severnside North disappeared (along with the bandstand) during the installation of the flood barriers, and there are now railings all along by the water's edge. That's certainly not to say that the photo should be deleted, but perhaps a note in the caption that it is a 2002 photo might be reasonable? Loganberry (Talk) 19:32, 24 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Done. Also corrected photo date in meta-data to 2003 (my mistake). Andrew Oakley (talk) 12:24, 25 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you; much appreciated. Loganberry (Talk) 23:48, 25 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Deletion review[edit]

Wasp Factory Recordings[edit]

As requested on the deletion review for this article I have userfied the article for you to User:Evilandi/Wasp Factory Recordings. The article cannot really be userfied to more than one persons userspace in order for the history to be preserved but you can get other editors to help on this page. I see no problem with adding a note on the talk page of the AFD to invite editors to help with the userfied copy. Hope this is helpful and that you are able to improve the article so it can be restored to mainspace. Davewild (talk) 17:13, 15 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. Note added to the ex-article's talk page, let me know if this isn't appropriate. Andrew Oakley (talk) 10:19, 16 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, Andrew! I happened to be looking at the deletion review page and saw that you were asking for collaboration, so I thought I would try to help you out a bit. I'm making some edits to User:Evilandi/Wasp Factory Recordings. Feel free to revert my edits if you don't like them.
WP:LEAD says the lead section (before the first section heading) can be up to four paragraphs. For a short article such as this, I think it should be shorter than that. I'm going to divide the article into sections. If you find more information to add to the article, you can expand each section and also expand the lead.
In the list of releases, I think it would really help give a sense of context if the year is mentioned for each one. I don't know where to get this information. If Freudstein is listed on their website as their "latest release", why is it in the middle of the list in this article? Coppertwig (talk) 12:56, 20 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I'm totally in support of all you've said. Unfortunately what I'm short of is time right now - just switched jobs. Please continue to edit and improve the Wasp Factory Recordings page. Thanks! Andrew Oakley (talk) 09:03, 22 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, Thanks for the message regarding the talk page of the article. I deleted it orignally before the deletion review but am not responsible for the second deletion which took place on the 20 July. User:MZMcBride deleted the page then and you really need to talk to him about his deletion of the talk page. Davewild (talk) 17:11, 22 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Otis Ferry[edit]

You have obviously decided to take over the editing of this article, so I will resign from it. This is something I cannot deal with Wikipedia about. You spend ages researching and building an article and then someone comes in and bullies their way into re-editing everything, with no manners enough to ask if they can, or explaining what God-given right they have to overrule you and who or how they have appointed themselves literary arbitrators. It is the height of rudeness, bullying and misuse of power. Enjoy the article and try not to lean one way or the other. Captainclegg (talk) 00:17, 13 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It sounds like you generally don't understand or haven't read Wikipedia's goals, policies and guidelines; I suggest starting with What Wikipedia Is Not. Wikipedia is a collaborative effort, with multiple individuals working within official Wikipedia policies to provide information from reliable sources. Articles are not supposed to be written by one person alone. In particular, Wikipedia is not a forum for personal essays. If you were the largest contributor to the Otis Ferry article, then it is unfortunate for you that the article contained multiple official policy violations including WP:NPOV, WP:BLP and WP:WEASEL. Furthermore, you cannot "take over" or "resign" from the article, as you do not own articles. Andrew Oakley (talk) 09:33, 13 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

LatinEmpire2[edit]

Hey, I've put LatinEmpire2 up for a deletion review; the original is modified in such a way that the original color-coding of the key is misconstrued, and the result is erroneous; the successor states become the Seljuk state, rather than what was originally intended. It would be better to just link to the original, which is clearer and which does not have this problem. You can see the deletion discussion here, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Images_and_media_for_deletion/2008_November_23#Image:LatinEmpire2.png

Have a great day though!

What kind of color-blindness do you have, and what do you recommend? I'm currently looking at what that images approximately appears as to those with color-blindness in order to modify it, but input would be appreciated. [INSERT: THIS ISN'T WORKING {SOB}; give me a resource recommendation and I'll work on modifying that image if I can]. Go 'head and respond on my talk page (TheResearchPersona).

Followed up on TheResearchPersona's talk page. For reference by others, an online colour blindness image filter is available at: vischeck.com Andrew Oakley (talk) 13:52, 27 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Hey there, thanks for the app links: I'll try visicheck first, then resort to the app if necessary; I tried using another online filter that absolutely refused to work, so then I worked backwards by using colors visible only to those with colorblindness...the only problem after that, I found, was that the image in question is more complex (color wise) than it first appears, with more subtle shades so that changing one...leaves little unchanged flecks: so it'll be just a bit more time consuming than I'd like, though I may decide to just trace the areas of interest and re-colorize them!

Heya, as the creator of the original map, I still have the PSP source files, where I can change the colours while retaining the height relief easily. I can experiment for myself, but do you maybe have some suggestions which colours (in RGB values) might be appropriate? Vischeck shows me that esp. the purple of the Latin Empire is almost indistinguishable from the sea, and that Venetian Green and Seljuk Brown are virtually the same. Which colours would be best? :) Regards, Varana (talk) 23:19, 22 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Kevin Sweeney case[edit]

Hi, I added references as well as I could. Are more/better needed?

I wonder if the death-threats, on the basis of which the picture was removed, weren't just vandalism - there have been photos in newspapers and interviews on TV. But anyway you are right this is about the case not about the person.

Please review a few pictures for WikiProject Oregon[edit]

We're having a discussion about whether or not to change our referendum maps to make them comprehensible to color-blind users, specifically red-green color-blind. We need the perspective of a real-live color-blind person. :)

Could you visit the discussion and check out the example picture to the right, and tell us how (il)legible it is? Also, there's a list of alternative color choices, with some examples linked. Could you look at those too and tell us which options are fine, from your perspective? It would be much appreciated. — Athelwulf [T]/[C] 05:28, 23 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Done, thanks for your consideration. Andrew Oakley (talk) 10:49, 23 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you very much! In case you aren't watching the discussion, I have some specific questions in response to your input. So if you don't mind, could you add just a bit more to your comment? Firstly, in response to the idea of using light/dark, could you tell us if something like File:CA2008Prop8.png would be legible? And secondly, in response to your suggestion that green/purple might not work, what about a more blueish shade of purple, such as indigo? — Athelwulf [T]/[C] 05:27, 24 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
File:CA2008Prop8.png is fine, job done. Also sorry, I don't really understand what indigo is. From reading up, I believe that indigo is a variant of purple, which I also cannot imagine, but in which case it will probably look blue to me. Andrew Oakley (talk) 13:48, 24 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

3-D Secure[edit]

Hi, I'm a little baffled by your edits to the "Criticism" section of 3-D Secure. It seems you first deleted the US SSN section, echoing (or parodying?) my somewhat frustrated edit summary; and then 5 minutes later, reverted both your edit and mine, with no further explanation. You also seem to have marked both of these edits as minor, despite them being significant changes to the content (I realise the use of this tool is very subjective; it seems a curious choice to me).

My guess is that you disagreed with my reasoning that this content should be removed, but I would be interested to hear your opinion. My main problem with the content was that it implied, without reference, that all US banks used SSNs for account setup, and all UK banks allowed you to reset using date of birth. Since 3-D Secure is implemented independently by each card issuer, this seems unlikely, and my suspicion was that editors were generalising from their own experience.

I've now reworded the section, but still think it needs reliable sources. I would be grateful for your opinion. - IMSoP (talk) 23:56, 17 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Two reasons behind my initial removal of your section. Firstly, as I stated in the comment, 3-D Secure is implemented PER BANK, so each and every bank can have DIFFERENT password reset weaknesses. Secondly, your example was specific to the USA in an article which wasn't limited to the USA; as a British citizen, I couldn't verify it and you didn't provide a source I could check your claims against. Obviously as British citizen I do not have a US social security number so, since Wikipedia is an international resource, it seemed pretty silly to knock 3DS due to failings in one country alone. However, my reasoning for subsequent reversion of my removal, is that 3DS has multiple weaknesses in pretty much each and every bank in pretty much each and every country it is implemented in, so I felt that my initial removal was too harsh, and that both your (US) and my (UK) examples should stand as samples of different weaknesses in different countries. Andrew Oakley (talk) 20:48, 18 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
As for minor/non-minor, I tend to only mark edits as non-minor if they alter more than, say, four or so paragraphs of text. That edit was just one paragraph in an article containing more than a dozen paragraphs, so in terms of sheer size I felt it was minor. Frankly the whole minor flag thing is poorly defined and individuals seem to have different personal takes on it, so I tend to flag everything as minor and only flag as major when I'm making massive, massive volumes of text changes throughout the article. Andrew Oakley (talk) 20:51, 18 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, OK, there seems to be an extra level of confusion here: I didn't add the US section, I just wasn't bold enough to remove it when I removed the similar UK claim. It seems we're both aiming for the same thing, anyway - maybe my rewording will encourage people to stick to the issues, rather than over-generalising examples (he says, optimistically). - IMSoP (talk) 21:39, 18 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

AfD nomination of PCRL[edit]

An editor has nominated one or more articles which you have created or worked on, for deletion. The nominated article is PCRL. We appreciate your contributions, but the nominator doesn't believe that the article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion and has explained why in his/her nomination (see also Wikipedia:Notability and "What Wikipedia is not").

Your opinions on whether the article meets inclusion criteria and what should be done with the article are welcome; please participate in the discussion(s) by adding your comments to Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/PCRL. Please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~).

You may also edit the article during the discussion to improve it but should not remove the articles for deletion template from the top of the article; such removal will not end the deletion debate.

Please note: This is an automatic notification by a bot. I have nothing to do with this article or the deletion nomination, and can't do anything about it. --Erwin85Bot (talk) 01:11, 25 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Edit summary in Toilet seat[edit]

Hi Evilandi, regarding this edit summary, I got curious and looked through WikiBlame. The text you refer to was added here in an apparent well-intentioned attempt to deal with a {{globalize/USA and Canada}} tag while taking it seriously. I've seen the subsection strategy used before, and as far as I can tell, there's no guideline for or against it. Of course, the tag itself had been added here as a minor edit with no edit summary, talk page activity, or other indication of the proper way to resolve the issue. Hopefully this gives you some perspective on how such a situation might arise independently of "Americans who doesn't own a passport". Cheers, Melchoir (talk) 11:33, 25 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Notification: changes to "Mark my edits as minor by default" preference[edit]

Hello there. This is an automated message to tell you about the gradual phasing out of the preference entitled "Mark all edits minor by default", which you currently have (or very recently had) enabled.

On 13 March 2011, this preference was hidden from the user preferences screen as part of efforts to prevent its accidental misuse (consensus discussion). This had the effect of locking users in to their existing preference, which, in your case, was true. To complete the process, your preference will automatically be changed to false in the next few days. This does not require any intervention on your part and you will still be able to manually mark your edits as being minor in the usual way.

For established users such as yourself there is a workaround available involving custom JavaScript. With the script in place, you can continue with this functionality indefinitely (its use is governed by WP:MINOR). If you have any problems, feel free to drop me a note.

Thank you for your understanding and happy editing :) Editing on behalf of User:Jarry1250, LivingBot (talk) 19:22, 15 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. Just to help explain why I removed your link from the Richard III of England article: Wikipedia:External_Links#What_to_link. Deb (talk) 12:40, 20 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. I have changed the link to the official BBC website, which should nullify any possible copyright concerns. Andrew Oakley (talk) 12:51, 20 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I've also checked that the BBC video is visible outside the UK. My proxy in Switzerland confirms it's fine. Andrew Oakley (talk) 12:54, 20 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
That's good - although it would be better to include it as a reference rather than putting the external link inside the narrative (though I'm not sure if there's a rule about that). Deb (talk) 13:01, 20 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I agree that the article should have been renamed, and well done for being bold enough to make the change. The best way to rename articles is to move them, rather than do a cut-and-paste, as that preserves the history. No worries, I personally prefer people were bold and did things than to leave them. Everything can be fixed on Wikipedia, though fixing cut-and-paste moves is complicated! Years back I did a couple of cut-and-paste moves myself before I was told that moving is the better option. Sometimes a move can't be done because of technical reasons - in that case you can request an admin (I'll look into it for you), or WP:Request a move.
