Week 6 / reflection/ Yilei Yu

1. Question: What did you learn about Wikipedia during the article evaluation?

I think I learned a lot about how Wikipedia works, and how is able to summarize information but still keeps it is content reliable. By doing article evaluation, I learned different styles of articles and different classes of articles. However, not all articles are well written. Improving on the articles is a big challenge.

2. The experience was great. I got confused in the first week of the class but I quickly picked up. All the quizzes were helpful and interesting.

3. One thing that I learned is how to become better at citing, and become appreciating the importance of citing. Adding citations are not only there to showing appreciation to the original author, it also lets the readers know where the sources are coming from so that readers can build form their own judgments.

4. I would continue to edit on Wikipedia but with only content that I am familiar with and with clear sources.

Yyl217 (talk) 07:36, 13 August 2020 (UTC)

Yyl217, Great to hear your final thoughts on this, and let me know if you ever need any help in the future with editing WIkipedia and happy to help. FULBERT (talk) 22:09, 13 August 2020 (UTC)

Sun Aug 16: Great American Wiknic NYC & Beyond

August 16, 3pm: Great American Wiknic

You are invited to join the Wikimedia NYC community for our annual summer Great American Wiknic, this year being held virtually.

We look forward to seeing local Wikimedians, but would also like to invite folks from the greater New York metropolitan area (and beyond!) who might not typically be able to join us in person!

Featuring artist-Wikimedian Sara Clugage's "Picnics: An Outside History" for a cultural exploration of picnicking, knowledge and society during the national panel in the first part. We encourage you to call in for the second part from a local park or natural site and share it on the video stream, as well as sharing your favorite picnic grub or other special foods with us.

Is there a project you'd like to share? A question you'd like answered? A Wiki* skill you'd like to learn? Let us know by adding it to the agenda. The Wiknic is taking the place of "WikiWednesday" this month, so we will also include salon and knowledge-sharing workshop aspects.

3:00 pm - 4:00 pm online via YouTube (watch our national panel's livestream, and participate by text chat)
4:00 pm - 5:00 pm online via Zoom (participate by videoconference with NYC community)

We especially encourage folks to share your parks and foods on screen, and add your 3-minute lightning talks to our roster for the Zoom portion, and otherwise join in the "open space" experience! Newcomers are very welcome! Bring your friends and colleagues!

(You can subscribe/unsubscribe from future notifications for NYC-area events by adding or removing your name from this list.)

week 5/ 2 new articles & New citations/Lewis9763

Assigned myself 2 new articles to read 1: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Social_Communication_Disorder 2: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bodybuilding

New citation was made: diff 1: https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Social_Communication_Disorder&oldid=972769693 diff 2: https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Bodybuilding&oldid=972770403 I was intertesting in bodybuilding myself, and I have personal experiences in this area as well. I searched around and found out this website taling about diet supplements, not only I agree with it, but also I am currently using some of these supplements right now. Thus I thought this could be useful for everyone.Lewis9763 (talk) 09:24, 8 August 2020 (UTC)

Lewis9763 (talk) 09:24, 8 August 2020 (UTC)

Lewis9763, Lewis, your edit was reverted due to plagiarism. As per the training you attended, avoid plagiarism on Wikipedia at all costs. Redo your edits on that article or on another one. Also, per the instructions, select two articles and add a citation to both. Ping me here when done. FULBERT (talk) 14:52, 8 August 2020 (UTC)

Lewis9763 (talk) 18:38, 13 August 2020 (UTC)

Lewis9763, Both of these changes were copied word-for-word as plagiarism again, and were removed by other editors. As mentioned above, plagiarism here and elsewhere needs to be avoided at all costs. You were already directed to the plagiarism training and now have multiple alerts on your account due to this repeated behavior and thus will not receive credit for this effort here. FULBERT (talk) 13:19, 15 August 2020 (UTC)

Week 5/ Adding a citation to 2 articles/ Ikhan94

1. For the Gnosticism article, I corrected the statement that Jesus attained divinity through gnosis rather than enlightenment. In the Gnostic gospels, there is a greater emphasis that Jesus was a spiritual advisor of sorts and sought to enlighten others so that they may be equal to him and I added a citation to support this claim. For the gene therapy article, I added two citations from scholarly journals to support the claim that gene editing can be used as a tool for immunotherapy.

2. Gnosticism: Difference between revisions, Gene therapy: Difference between revisions

3. I've learned that using certain words can give an unintended meaning and one should be careful choosing what words they use in an article in order to not imply information that may be false

Ikhan94 (talk) 22:05, 13 August 2020 (UTC)

______

Hi professor, apologies for this posting being out of order. I had posted this earlier, but it somehow got deleted, so I copied it from the revision history and am posting it again.

week6/reflection/Xiaoui Wang

I think the editing of Wikipedia helped me master the skills of citation and strengthened my attention to the source of citation. At first I thought inserting pictures is a very simple technique, but through practice, I found that the copyright and source of the pictures are very important. If the network allows, I will continue to edit Wikipedia.Xwang2182 (talk) 01:36, 14 August 2020 (UTC)

Xwang2182, Thanks for sharing your final thoughts here on this experience. I am glad you found it helpful and engaging. Please let me know if I can ever assist in the future with it. FULBERT (talk) 13:36, 15 August 2020 (UTC)

Week 6/ Adding an image/ Ikhan94

1. In took a picture of a Chromecast Ultra I owned and added it to the Chromecast article as it had a picture of all other versions except for this model.

2. Chromecast: Difference between revisions

3. I've learned a lot about copyright laws for pictures. I didn't realize how restrictive it was to use images found online for Wikipedia articles. I also learned information from Wikipedia articles may be used in contect that is sold, which is another aspect to watch out for regarding media copyrights.

Ikhan94 (talk) 03:16, 14 August 2020 (UTC)

Ikhan94, Interesting addition, and glad you were able to add it. Current. FULBERT (talk) 13:38, 15 August 2020 (UTC)

Bonus/ Reflective essay/ Ikhan94

1. What did you learn about Wikipedia during the article evaluation? - I learned that while Wikipedia has a lot of information, much of which has sources and citations, there is still some information on Wikipedia that may not portrayed accurately and it is extremely important to go back to the sources in order to verify the information presented.

2. I actually found editing Wikipedia articles satisfying. Before, I was always under the impression that unless I was an expert, I had no real business editing anything on Wikipedia.

3. I learned a lot about what kind of sources are trustworthy, how copyright laws work regarding sharing media, and how fact-checking isn't so intimidating and can be done by anyone who wants to contribute to Wikipedia.

4. I'm not sure if I will continue editing on Wikipedia. While I did find it satisfying, I mainly edited articles that were in need of something rather than something I am interested in. I may try to find a project on Wikipedia in the future that's related to something I find interesting.

Ikhan94 (talk) 03:33, 14 August 2020 (UTC)

Ikhan94, Thanks for sharing these reflection points on this. I am glad you found it satisfying, and I hope you continue working on it in the future. Let me know if you ever need help with it. FULBERT (talk) 13:39, 15 August 2020 (UTC)
