"Fair use" vs. "Free" images[edit]

Hi there, I reverted a couple of your additions of "official" images where we already had freely-usable images under one of the licenses that is compatible with Wikipedia.

The official images were clearly better than the ones they replaced *but* they are also "fair use", and not "free", and thus more restrictively-licensed and less desirable to Wikipedia. "Fair use" material is accepted because it's legal under U.S. law and better than nothing, but the general aim is to cut this material out of Wikipedia where alternatives exist as it's not freely redistributable. (See this page for example).

No hard feelings, I hope. From an aesthetic point of view, I understand completely why you wanted to replace the lower quality images. Fourohfour 19:32, 25 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Viking Skull[edit]

OK -- the article now expresses notability. However, you cannot use those album covers in the article at present, because you are not providing a commentary about them. They are only there for illustration. You could have used them on articles about the albums themselves. You also need to provide refernces for your article. To prevent further speedy deletions, it would be a good idea to complete the article in your user space first (perhaps as a subpage) before transferring it to main space. Marijuana Wiki[edit]

Hi there,

I see that you are a pro-Cannabis Wikipedian so I hope this will be of some interest to you.

I've started a Marijuana wiki (aka The Sticky Wiki) which I think you might be interested in. I'm hoping you can help me get started with this project. Whereas lots of articles about weed get speedy-deleted on Wikipedia, they would be totally cool over at MarijuanaWiki. But really I want the site to be more of a marijuana community than merely an encyclopedia.

To give you an example, I want to have city guides about where to score, find pot-friendly cafes, marijuana events, and what represents a good price in that city. Etc. (You can check out the featured article: "Toronto" to see what I mean). I also want to have grow diaries and marijuana blogs. All in all, basically more communal than encyclopedic.

I am in need of admins/moderators, and people experienced with MediaWiki to help build policy, categories, and templates, etc. If you'd be interested in helping me with this project, the URL is MarijuanaWiki

Image copyright problem with Image:Sallyphilips.jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Sallyphilips.jpg. However, the image may soon be deleted unless we can determine the copyright holder and copyright status. The Wikimedia Foundation is very careful about the images included in Wikipedia because of copyright law (see Wikipedia's Copyright policy).

The copyright holder is usually the creator, the creator's employer, or the last person who was transferred ownership rights. Copyright information on images is signified using copyright templates. The three basic license types on Wikipedia are open content, public domain, and fair use. Find the appropriate template in Wikipedia:Image copyright tags and place it on the image page like this: {{TemplateName}}.

Please signify the copyright information on any other images you have uploaded or will upload. Remember that images without this important information can be deleted by an administrator. Hi, thanks for the info on the London Hicks related play.. I'd *really* love to see it but time and cash wont permit. I think it would deserve it's own page and a mention on Bill's bio page but I am sick of putting work in here only to have some pedantic psuedo-admin arsehole either revert it or change to something else altogther. Fair use rationale for Image:Ap_s_stifler.jpg[edit]

I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use. Suggestions on how to do so can be found here.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template.
