Choose Your Own Adventure[edit]

Greetings,

I just wanted to reiterate that I would like to participate in the Choose Your Own Adventure article rewrite, as would the editor Milowent. It would be helpful to have some idea about the nature of the rewrite and what information you're looking to source. As the primary complaints previously were regarding the history section and the attribution of the creation of the series concept, those are the references I have supplied so far, but if I had a clearer idea of what it is specifically you're trying to source, I could probably dig up some more references. The references sited by the Contemporary Authors bio would probably be the most useful for history and background.

I'd also like to help contribute to the CYOA page, as I use the page a lot to explain the concept of CYOA to people, and the current state of the page someone saddens me. if you can please let me know what exactly it is you're looking for so I can start figuring out the best way to contribute, I would greatly appreciate that. Wikimania 2012 bid, DC chapter & next meetup![edit]

  1. At WikiXDC in January, User:Harej proposed that DC submit a bid to host Wikimania 2012. A bid and organizing committee is being formed and seeks additional volunteers to help. Please look at our bid page and sign up if you want to help out. You can also signup for the bid team's email list.
  2. To support the Wikimania bid, more events like WikiXDC, and outreach activities like collaborations with the Smithsonian (ongoing) and National Archives, there also has been discussion of forming Wikimedia DC, as an official Wikimedia chapter. You can express interest and contribute to chapter discussions on the Wikimedia DC Meta-Wiki pages.
  3. To discuss all this and meet up with special guest, Dutch Wikipedian User:Kim Bruning, there will be a meetup, Wikipedia:Meetup/DC 16 this Tuesday at 7pm, at Capitol City Brewery, Metro Center. There will be a pre-meetup Wikimania team meeting at 6pm at the same location.

I want to begin by saying thanks for all your contribs. I am not able to do much, so I don't want to communicate any disrespect whatsoever. Thank you for all your hard and thoughtful work. However, I don't know if you still watch the page, so I wanted to paste my comment here from the Discussion page.

I would not argue notability here: this is obviously important, ground-breaking lit. That said, we're given very little specific to "Sally Ann." I'm anxious to read these stories, and that is a worthy purpose for encyclopedia articles, but I think this article needs either to go into detail, or be merged into the author article.

DC Meetup: May 7 @ Tenleytown Library[edit]

Problems with Wikipedia[edit]

It has been nearly a year since I logged on. Frankly there is good reason why "unprecedented numbers of the millions of online volunteers who write, edit and police it [wikipedia] are quitting." It is the unwillingness of people to apply standards evenly and fairly.

Truthfully the articles on Robert Watke and Fred J. Strain, both of which were deleted, that I researched and wrote, were done so by people who had an axe to grind with little real training in historical research or editing. The sad thing is that since the editors are unwilling to highlight significant people in small communities, therefore there is less to write about. They were both deemed "unnotable" even though they were very notable in their small community in their time period.

Actually the thing that wikipedia should do is to require ALL editors to have contributed at least a small number of articles themselves before they can become judge and jury. Secondly, they should have an appeals process that submits articles to a panel of judges who actually have the training and credentials to make those types of judgments. Without these changes wikipedia is likely to fade into the sunset over time.

There were 2 editors who were gracious and tried to be fair -- yet there were 2 other "editors" that consistently attempted to delete every article that I submitted. Unfortunately they succeeded because of their loud bombastic voices. Thus I have had no need to waste my time on the wikipedia project.

But I would encourage you to use your position in 2011 to advocate for change in policies. And to develop standards that are easily implemented and develop censure processes for those who flagrantly violate them. Without this, the few in academia, like myself, who supported wikipedia in the past, will continue to leave in droves. In recent discussions at the project, most notably here, several members have indicated that the scope of the project may need to be more clearly defined and communicated. Photos[edit]

I remember you saying that you occasionally make trips out to Frankfort for photo taking. It's strange to me that we don't have a photo of the Old Governor's Mansion. Think that's one you could pick up next time you're out that way? Presently, my interest stems from a mutual undertaking between myself and User:Doncram to create a list of buildings constructed by Kentucky Governor Thomas "Stonehammer" Metcalfe. If you happen to be near any of those other buildings and can make a photo, I think that could eventually be a featured list if we can get enough images and write enough of the redlinked articles. Me again. Sorry I might have become a bit annoying at this point. But at the AfD, you said before proposing deletion that you considered renaming "but decided that in this instance I did not think that ... would correct the BLP concerns in the article since the article is written as a biography". But couldn't one just easily remove some of the biographical details? Am I missing a key reason why renaming and reworking the article wouldn't work under BLP? Thanks again. No problem, I don't mind answering questions. :-) Unless the article is deleted, the history of the article would contain the other material for one thing. Since this is a BLP I would prefer not to keep the material that is not used in the history of the article. I suggest that you add material to the cardic stent article first, if the section of that article is too long to hold the all the material, then create a new article about the possible over use of stents as discussed in reliable sources. Jesanj, I think that writing an article about a significant study or a significant concept such as "over utilization of cardiac stents" (if there is strong research in reliable sources showing that it is happening) is the way to go. The research article or the broader topic is of global interest. Our goal should be for our article to reflect the world view about the use of cardiac stents. So, rather than focusing a particular person such as Mark Midei, we meet the mission of Wikipedia when we write about topics that are of general interest to the largest number of people. Our notability policy helps us stay focused on the topics where we can find in depth information from a variety of reliable sources over the course of years, if not decades. Yes, I think that an article that focuses on one physician and one hospital would not be notable. (I've reviewed the source articles and know that other physicians and hospitals in Maryland are under scrutiny but this still seems like a local issue rather than something that is of world wide interest. Traditionally, encyclopedias have not covered local medical malpractice scandals, and Wikipedia has not. FloNight♥♥♥♥ 16:44, 25 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Agenda items include:

  • election of the Board of Directors for the next two years
  • approval of a budget for the 2011-2012 fiscal year
  • report on the activities and accomplishments of the past year
  • social gathering afterwards at a nearby restaurant

Martha Layne Collins[edit]

Hey, I'm only like a year late, but just wanted to let you know that Martha Layne Collins is presently up at FAC. I know I said I was going to try and get it ready to be TFA during Women's History Month last year, but obviously, that didn't happen. (In my defense, my first child was born in October last year, so my editing time got cut way down.) Anyway, with some luck, I can get it passed by early to mid-January, and we'll be all set for WHM in 2012. Maybe even International Women's Day on March 8. National Archives ExtravaSCANza[edit]

You are invited to the National Archives ExtravaSCANza, taking place every day next week from January 4–7, Wednesday to Saturday, in College Park, Maryland (Washington, DC metro area). Come help me cap off my stint as Wikipedian in Residence at the National Archives with one last success!

This will be a casual working event in which Wikipedians are getting together to scan interesting documents at the National Archives related to a different theme each day—currently: spaceflight, women's suffrage, Chile, and battleships—for use on Wikipedia/Wikimedia Commons. The event is being held on multiple days, and in the evenings and weekend, so that as many locals and out-of-towners from nearby regions1 as possible can come. Please join us! Thank you for the barnstar! Our idea was to create 4 or 5 states first to see what type of information we want to include, and then go live with all the states. Gaurav and I were going to each create some, independent of each other, and then decide later which style to use. This way we could experiment with more styles. MSU Interview[edit]

Dear FloNight,

My name is Jonathan Obar user:Jaobar, I'm a professor in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences at Michigan State University and a Teaching Fellow with the Wikimedia Foundation's Education Program. This semester I've been running a little experiment at MSU, a class where we teach students about becoming Wikipedia administrators. Not a lot is known about your community, and our students (who are fascinated by wiki-culture by the way!) want to learn how you do what you do, and why you do it. A while back I proposed this idea (the class) to the communityHERE, where it was met mainly with positive feedback. Anyhow, I'd like my students to speak with a few administrators to get a sense of admin experiences, training, motivations, likes, dislikes, etc. We were wondering if you'd be interested in speaking with one of our students.


So a few things about the interviews:

  • Interviews will last between 15 and 30 minutes.
  • Interviews can be conducted over skype (preferred), IRC or email. (You choose the form of communication based upon your comfort level, time, etc.)
  • All interviews will be completely anonymous, meaning that you (real name and/or pseudonym) will never be identified in any of our materials, unless you give the interviewer permission to do so.
  • All interviews will be completely voluntary. You are under no obligation to say yes to an interview, and can say no and stop or leave the interview at any time.
  • The entire interview process is being overseen by MSU's institutional review board (ethics review). This means that all questions have been approved by the university and all students have been trained how to conduct interviews ethically and properly.


Bottom line is that we really need your help, and would really appreciate the opportunity to speak with you. Credo Reference Update & Survey (your opinion requested)[edit]

Credo Reference, who generously donated 400 free Credo 250 research accounts to Wikipedia editors over the past two years, has offered to expand the program to include 100 additional reference resources. Credo wants Wikipedia editors to select which resources they want most. So, we put together a quick survey to do that:

It also asks some basic questions about what you like about the Credo program and what you might want to improve.

At this time only the initial 400 editors have accounts, but even if you do not have an account, you still might want to weigh in on which resources would be most valuable for the community (for example, through WikiProject Resource Exchange).

Also, if you have an account but no longer want to use it, please leave me a note so another editor can take your spot.

Time for WLM-US planning[edit]

Dear Sydney,

It's time to start planning for a WLM-US event in Florida (or in St. Augustine). There seem to be 2 types of events planned around the country: a traditional "Wiki takes ..." event, where you give a list and a map to relevant sites to editors at the start, and then help upload the photos at the end, and a newer version, the Photo Walk. In a photo walk, the group moves pretty much together over a planned route, with a guide. The purpose might be more enjoying each other's company and learning, than strictly photographing the most sites. St John's County has a "problem" in that it is already fully illustrated. That doesn't mean that you can't take more photos of the sites, only that the new photos should try to go beyond the basic shots that we already have. I'd probably concentrate on the five historic districts in St. Augustine.

You might want to check with User:Pharos about Wikipedia:Wikipedia Takes America, as well as User:Ebyabe about Florida NRHP sites.

Looking for some feedback on a fellowship proposal[edit]

Hi Sydney! It was so lovely spending time with you in DC, I hope you are coming to SF soon because I already miss you :-) I saw you signed up to participate in the Acknowledgements work being planned for Teahouse, hooray! We've got a fellowship idea proposing to experiment with badges in the Teahouse, which obviously has potential to tie into the Teahouse work being planned. Backstage at the Smithsonian Libraries[edit]

Backstage at the Smithsonian Libraries is part of Wikipedia Loves Libraries 2012, the second annual continent-wide campaign to bring Wikipedia and libraries together with on-site events. Running this fall through October and November, libraries (and archives) will open their doors to help build a lasting relationship with their local Wikipedian community.

Organized by Wikimedia DC, this event will take place on October 12, 2012, and will include new editor training, a "backstage pass" tour of the National Museum of Natural History, and an edit-a-thon. Everyone is welcome to attend!
