Jimmy Wales' talkpage

No name-calling. Acroterion (talk) 23:53, 16 May 2021 (UTC)

Fair enough. I will refactor my comment. Did you also warn the editor who is refactoring my comments User:Acroterion? That is totally unacceptable, not to mention their dishonest attacks. FloridaArmy (talk) 23:56, 16 May 2021 (UTC)
You do not own the headings or anything else at User talk:Jimbo Wales. Do not repeat assertions in headings or you will be blocked for edit warring. Johnuniq (talk) 23:57, 16 May 2021 (UTC)
I already did it.; You can stop calling other people racist now too, please. Refactoring your header is not on the same level as your accusations. I recommend a break, maybe a walk outside. Acroterion (talk) 23:59, 16 May 2021 (UTC)
Just came here to say please stop casting aspersions against other editors on Jimbo's talk. I agree Wikipedia has a bias problem, but . Don't get yourself blocked over this, because that's where it's heading, FA. YODADICAE👽 00:10, 17 May 2021 (UTC)
When you engage in dishonest discussion tactics like using straw man arguments to discredit what's actually been said, for example misrespresenting my position as holding that "every decline or rejection is an act of racism", and threaten editors confronting the problem of bigotry on Wikipedia, you are part of the problem. FloridaArmy (talk) 00:29, 17 May 2021 (UTC)
You're doing yourself no favors with accusations like that. Acroterion (talk) 00:36, 17 May 2021 (UTC)
I have never once threatened you. I'm trying to help you here. YODADICAE👽 00:36, 17 May 2021 (UTC)
When you tell someone they are heading for a block if they continue to discuss issues of bigotry on Wikipedia you are threatening them and you are part of the problem. I'm not sure what accusation User:Acroterion is referring to but if I'm to be blocked for pointing out systemic discrimination, exclusion, slurs, and other examples of bigotry on Wikipedia so be it. What more proof is needed of thw oroblem here than when people trying to fix it are attacked? Sick.
I'm not okay with high schools for African American students being excluded from Wikipedia, I'm not okay with films with African American casts and those made by African American filmmakers being excluded, I'm not okay with community leaders who are African Americans being excluded, and I'm not okay with bigoted language being used to describe African American subjects on Wikipedia. If pointing out these problems gets me blocked it is a well earnwd block.and shame on the abusers doing the blocking. Bigotry is not okay. It needs to stop. FloridaArmy (talk) 00:44, 17 May 2021 (UTC)
I'm not going to argue with you, you're not doing anyone any favors by calling them bigots in this situation. Especially given your assessment of the reasoning, when your article simply hadn't been reviewed yet because there are 5,000+ drafts waiting. Lastly, you accused specific editors of bigoted comments on Jimbo's talk page but I've yet to see any substance behind it, so this is a formal request for you to provide diffs in the context of your drafts and your complaint or this will escalate to ANI. YODADICAE👽 00:48, 17 May 2021 (UTC)
  • Please provide the diff where I called someone a bigot. FloridaArmy (talk) 00:50, 17 May 2021 (UTC)
Gaslighting editors wasn't an option when I said "provide diffs or this will escalate to ANI". but if I'm to be blocked for pointing out systemic discrimination, exclusion, slurs, and other examples of bigotry on Wikipedia so be it. your comment, for your edification. YODADICAE👽 00:52, 17 May 2021 (UTC)
That comment doesn't call anyone a bigot. Who is gaslighting whom? Take your dishonest attacks and stuff em. You are part of the problem. Saying you're not threatening me even as you threaten me and say you're going to take me to ANI. You know exactly what you are and that's what's bothering you. Check yourself. FloridaArmy (talk) 00:56, 17 May 2021 (UTC)
FloridaArmy, telling you that your behavior is disruptive and problematic and will ultimately result in it being taken to ANI if this cannot be hashed out cordially on your talk page is not a threat. But since you insist on insinuating and implying everyone who disagrees with you is part of "the problem" and are incapable of taking responsibility for your own actions, word choice and incivility, I guess there's no other option, which is a shame because I've enjoyed researching and attempting to expand on subjects you've chosen but failed to source yourself. If you would stick to being civil toward others and understanding WP:V, we wouldn't be in this mess, but alas, we're here again and your denigrating dozens of other hard working, good faith volunteers. Lastly You know exactly what you are and that's what's bothering you. is wildly inappropriate, so thank you for proving my point. YODADICAE👽 00:59, 17 May 2021 (UTC)

Since you are currently on a short enforced break I saw this draft that was in G13 danger and found referencing and a full claim to notability. I hope you approve FiddleTimtrent FaddleTalk to me 12:47, 17 May 2021 (UTC)
Thanks User:Timtrent. Looks like a good start. I don't think he was "the first professionally licensed architect" in Oklahoma. I'm not sure if I added that or someone else did but I don't see it in the cited source and I think it should be taken out. FloridaArmy (talk) 12:56, 17 May 2021 (UTC)

I also think it would be better to say he was initially blocked from registering as an architect in Oklahoma because he was African American rather than "because of his race." Just noting here so I remember to fix.FloridaArmy (talk) 13:00, 17 May 2021 (UTC)

Drive-By Comment

I wish I had more time tonight, I only have time to pontificate and run. But just for the record, this block is about 49% FA's fault, and 51% other people who replied suboptimally on Jimbo's talk page and here, intentionally or unintentionally baiting him. And it's only 49% FA's fault because of the way his anger has morphed into personalized comments after he was baited and blocked. It started out at more like 10%.

Months ago, FA got into trouble - with me leading the criticism and threatening blocks - because he was calling individual editors racists for deleting or declining articles he wrote. I do not believe he has done that in a long while. But we cannot make it unacceptable to complain on Jimbo's talk page about systemic racism on WP being responsible for deleting or declining articles he wrote, which is how this started out before User:JzG started poking him. If we refuse to even allow someone to say Wikipedia's policies are racist because saying it in public is disruptive - if we consider the accusation itself in need of refactoring or discounting it with "yeah, FA says we're all racists haha" - then we're already 100% screwed.

We are all racists. Not the skinhead kind, but the "raised in a racist environment so that it all seems OK and normal" kind. Some of our policies are probably going to continue to be racist, because (for example) it's hard to undo racism in the past that caused contemporary reliable sources to not cover Black people/places/organizations. It's going to continue to piss FA off; it's kind of crazy to expect it to not piss FA off. It's going to lead to uncomfortable conversations. But that's OK as long as it isn't personalized unfounded accusations against individual editors. Immediately getting defensive when someone aggressively criticizes Wikipedia's systemic racism is perpetuating it. And FA, saying things like "You know exactly what you are and that's what's bothering you" (or calling someone a sleazebag) is a personalized attack.

FA has some level of responsibility here. But so do we. --Floquenbeam (talk) 01:59, 17 May 2021 (UTC)

I said this elsewhere but I do feel a need to defend myself. I agree wholeheartedly with what you've said, particularly as it applies to difficult conversations. I readily admit that what I do in every day life is tainted in bias and probably racism - I am white and American. I do the work to try and be anti-racist and I try to listen when called out but I do not think FA's inclination to scream racism at every disagreement benefits anyone here and will not help solve the bias gap and it blurs his point and does a disservice to actual anti-bias and anti-racism efforts on Wikipedia. FA's comments toward me in particular were completely out of line and I never baited him. I wish FA would recognize that there is a time and place for certain comments and take a little more time to learn about WP:V. Also Floq, I think some of this has been mangled because FA's specific complaint was about a draft being "declined" or rejected that hadn't even been reviewed yet, not because of some inherent racism or bigotry but because we've got an untenable backlog at AFC, a point which he very much missed. YODADICAE👽 02:07, 17 May 2021 (UTC)
As a side issue, AFC is very likely to run a backlog drive shortly, depending upon consensus and then solving some technical issues. While this is likely to solve the overall backlog for a time it won't solve the probably correct perception that ethnic minority topics that are highly likely to be notable may be declined because of very thin WP:V.
On a personal front I am supportive, FA, of your creation of articles on otherwise "forgotten" topics and am placing the word in quotes on purpose. I've been inspired to pick up some and add to them, and been spurred to create at least one spinoff from them.
As an AFC reviewer I hope I behave without any -isms in that I believe I review on the merits of the draft. I try very hard to, but I acknowledge that my background of being raised in a home and school environment that espoused discrimination may be hard to overcome at times. Majoring on verifiability and verification and considering the new essay Wikipedia:Speak for Itself will help make many drafts easy acceptances however "forgotten" the topic FiddleTimtrent FaddleTalk to me 08:54, 17 May 2021 (UTC)
Well said, Floquenbeam. I've come across several other instances where people are trigger-happy and respond with force and aggression when dealing with people who are trying to raise issues of systemic racism (even if not well-founded—people are allowed to be wrong so long as they are acting in good faith). It's unfortunate that many people fail to see the difference between suggesting bias could exist and calling someone a frothing-at-the-mouth racist. We should think about how we are all flawed, biased and—yes—racist (though of course not all racist to an equal extent). And if you respond to someone with rudeness then you will get rudeness reflected back at you, whereas the much rarer calm engagement in good faith can lead to surprisingly positive outcomes. — Bilorv (talk) 14:36, 17 May 2021 (UTC)
I agree. The problem isn't that FloridaArmy is raising difficult (both in the sense of "morally difficult for WP editors" and "difficult to solve") questions on Jimbo's page. Does the backlog of articles (which, apart from FA, is largely Indian and African topics) induce Wikipedia to act in an institutionally-"racist" way? Maybe. The problem is that FA expects the community to implement simple solutions that don't work, and when that is pointed out conversations devolve into personal attacks. User:力 (power~enwiki, π, ν) 15:05, 17 May 2021 (UTC)
PS, regarding the title change: I suggested "Long backlog at AFC" as a neutral title after the initial changed title was something I found wholly unreasonable. I assume FA didn't check the edit-history in detail before casting aspersions on the title change, which is another teachable moment. User:力 (power~enwiki, π, ν) 15:05, 17 May 2021 (UTC)
, no, the problem is a lot simpler. FA has an issue with creating under-sourced articles that fail to establish notability (hence two separate article creation restrictions). When FA's drafts are not speedily approved, he has a long history of going to JIMBOTALK and framing it as institutional racism. That's incredibly disrespectful to the draft reviewing community. As an aside, it's also evidence of continued failure to accept the underlying problem that led to the restrictions.
I was intemperate, but it was from my lack of patience with the constant aspersions cast, with no grounds whatsoever, on our draft reviewing editors.
I have no issue with FA spamming JIMBOTALK with his rejected articles, just as long as he stops asserting that the failure to approve is based on racial bias. There is absolutely no evidence to support that claim, and it's thoroughly unpleasant. To be fair, he is improving: at least this time he didn't go off on a rant about bigotry, but above, he did accuse another editor of racism, and that is simply not acceptable. Of course Wikipedia has systemic bias, and reflects the biases of sources that historically fail to cover Black figures properly, but this is not a problem of the reviewers being racially biased, it's a real world problem which FA gives a very good impression of trying to use Wikipedia to fix.
What will happen if FA keeps asserting that failure to accept undersourced articles is due to racism, is that he'll be banned. The only reason that hasn't happened before is that the community recognises the good work he does in under-covered topic areas.
Anyway, I will shut up and go away. Guy (help! - typo?) 18:31, 17 May 2021 (UTC)
There are so many articles in this area that need to be written, that I can understand why someone would get impatient. I don't generally have the time to improve these drafts, but I try to at least make sure they stay aroun long enough for FA or the many other editors to be able to improve them. But, FA, it would be a lot easier for all of us if you worked a little slower. For one thing, I'd like to be able to pay some more attention to other undercovered geographies also. DGG ( talk ) 01:15, 18 May 2021 (UTC)
Rather than "worked a little slower", I'd say "spend twice as much time per draft on half as many drafts". Though this may only be possible if FA has the sources to go any further with the drafts they write. Another thing that would help (speaking from experience as someone who's reviewed a couple of FA drafts) would be if FA could add a comment at the top of each submission saying "this meets WP:NFO#2, bullet point 4, per the inclusion in Example Documentary" (or whatever). If you know the notability reason then don't make me re-discover it when it's an NFO edge case I only see once per 10,000 WP:FILM articles. — Bilorv (talk) 13:57, 18 May 2021 (UTC)
