Laughton[edit]

Hi, regarding your comment here there are some images of Charles Laughton as Captain Bligh here commons:Category:Charles_Laughton which I just uploaded. Regards Gustav von Humpelschmumpel (talk) 20:47, 4 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Orphaned non-free media (Image:LaughtonasBligh.jpg)[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:LaughtonasBligh.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 12:33, 5 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

NYC Meetup: June 1, 2008[edit]

New York City Meetup

Next: Sunday June 1st, Columbia University area
Last: 3/16/2008
This box: view  talk  edit

In the afternoon, we will hold a session dedicated to meta:Wikimedia New York City activities, elect a board of directors, and hold salon-style group discussions on Wikipedia and the other Wikimedia projects (see the last meeting's minutes).

We'll also review our recent Wikipedia Takes Manhattan event, and make preparations for our exciting successor Wiki Week bonanza, being planned with Columbia University students for September or October.

In the evening, we'll share dinner and chat at a local restaurant, and (weather permitting) hold a late-night astronomy event at Columbia's telescopes.

You can add or remove your name from the New York City Meetups invite list at Wikipedia:Meetup/NYC/Invite list.

Also, check out our regional US Wikimedia chapters blog Wiki Northeast (and we're open to guest posts).

Your RFA[edit]

Hello Formadoxfraud. Unfortunately I have just closed your recent RFA as unsuccessful. It was a close call, but there was sufficient significant opposition to warrant the closure as no consensus reached - (67/28/5). I think that two biased editors shot you down with energized buzz words, and then we had a drive-by pile-on. I too edit in some pretty unsavory articles from time to time to keep WP uncensored but out of the gutter and avoiding soapbox. I think that those who don't get into the edgier issues lack the experience to solve problems, but it is hard to stand in the gutter without getting stinky. Re: Sacntum Sanctorum - d'oh!  :) BOZ (talk) 20:02, 12 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

One thing: If there are in-universe facts verifiable by a particular issue of a comic book itself, then that issue is the direct, concrete source to cite. Citing this book for things that the comics themselves verify seems like book promotion. --Tenebrae (talk) 21:04, 12 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Well, I guess can't argue with your reasoning; it's sound, and I empathize completely. I guess I would only use this book about NYC locations to cite location-oriented facts; the cite for Dr. Strange going to the Himalayas and meeting the Ancient One seemed a bit outside that.
And take heart: Captain America and Galactus both contain voluminous citations from the comics themselves, so, hopefully, the situation isn't as dire as all that (though heaven knows I understand how frustrating it can be sometimes to work in a community more fan-oriented perhaps, than research-oriented. One can be both, after all.)
Good to have someone with us with such obvious research skills! I'm quite a bit looking forward to working with you. We have some excellent editors here; it's a pretty nice community overall. --Tenebrae (talk) 22:06, 12 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Redirect of Vithericus[edit]

Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on Vithericus, by another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because Vithericus is a redirect to a non-existent page (CSD R1).

To contest the tagging and request that administrators wait before possibly deleting Vithericus, please affix the template {{hangon}} to the page, and put a note on its talk page. If the article has already been deleted, see the advice and instructions at WP:WMD. Feel free to contact the bot operator if you have any questions about this or any problems with this bot, bearing in mind that this bot is only informing you of the nomination for speedy deletion; it does not perform any nominations or deletions itself. Fiction[edit]

Good comments at Fiction. I'm afraid this won't die easilly, and not with out some pain. My experience is that these need to have oak stakes driven throguh the hearts, or these become the undead. Film was a good example of a very emotional subject that wouldn't died and finaly passed when people were just worn-out and the right forum was in attendance. We have had a similar problems with ATT. --Kevin Murray (talk) 18:46, 14 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Gavin's mediation?[edit]

Psst, you're a little late to the party.  ;) Eventually, he did agree to do mediation with us, and has been involved for about 6 weeks now. I've been working on the Kender trimming part, but been busy for a few days. I plan to get back to it again starting tomorrow, god willing! :) I'm hoping to not have to do any arbitration in the future, because one of the main complaints people had against him was incivility, and he's been quite a bit nicer for the last few weeks, and I'm hoping very badly that it stays that way! BOZ (talk) 05:11, 16 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Oh yeah, looks like I didn't pay any attention to the date on that. Sorry. I was in a bit of a time crunch, and had to leave the house, so I probably didn't read it as carefully as I should have. Ford MF (talk) 14:28, 16 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
No problem - you can watch how it's been playing out at your leisure. There have been rough patches (like there is right now, which began after I left you the above more-optimistic note), but when we have worked together, it's been better than it ever was before - more actual collaberation and less confrontation. A barnstar[edit]

The Barnstar of Diligence
I recently came across the Albucilla article, which you started, and marveled at how you converted the original DGRBM article on her to the version which you wrote for Wikipedia. Specifically, I realize and appreciate the effort it takes to reword antiquated phrasing, wikilink names and places (compensating for mistakes such as Cn. Domitius Ahenobarbus → Gnaeus Domitius Ahenobarbus (consul 32)), and properly categorize the result in an effort to bring public domain material to Wikipedia.

Awesome work! « D. Trebbien (talk) 20:05 2008 June 16 (UTC)

Slam Book[edit]

I see that you voted "strong keep" on Slam book and suggested that it would be easy to source. I would like to hold you to that. So far, the article has a single reference which is no better than a partial definition. If you can do anything to improve this it would be much appreciated. --DanielRigal (talk) 20:46, 16 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I like a challenge! Unfortunately, I'm leaving for Mexico in a couple hours, so I probably won't have much chance to tinker with the article. But I promise it'll be high on my to-do list when I return from holiday. Cheers. Ford MF (talk) 20:50, 16 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Alumni relations[edit]

Regarding this, refer to the Alumnus article: "As indicated in the American Heritage Dictionary, an alumnus or alumna is either someone who has attended the school (or a "former student of a school") or someone who has graduated from the school."

The fact that Seung Hui Cho turned out to be a murderous psychopath doesn't change the fact of his association with Virginia Tech as a former student. For precedent, note that Charles Whitman can be found in Category:University of Texas at Austin alumni. --Dynaflow babble 03:58, 18 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I stand corrected in that case. Cheers. Ford MF (talk) 17:47, 24 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Shit, I keep forgetting that list, sorry! Ford MF (talk) 14:36, 10 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
It's OK, I removed a ton of stuff from it that people have added in the past few months. I'll add more sooner or later, but the numbers are really coming down.  :) So, back to my previous question, would you like me to make some recommendations on characters you could expand/source/whatever? What sorts of characters or comics are you interested in - I've noticed you like occult/horror types, and generally 70s-era stuff. BOZ (talk) 15:07, 10 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I do tend to lean towards that stuff, partially because I like it and partially because its coverage here isn't as good as the coverage of other eras and genres of comics. Feel free to make suggestions, but I can't make any promises I'll get to them this lifetime. I've got enough Wikiprojects on my plate. Cheers. Ford MF (talk) 15:12, 10 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, that's what suggestions are for!  :) Let's see, I posted this on Asgardian's talk page since he likes to "adopt" and fix up articles, but he never really bit:

Let's see... looking through my own watchlist. Amphibion might be OK for you. Cloud hasn't had a lot of attention. You might like Dark-Crawler - he's got a lot of potential but I was never sure what to do with him. Maybe the Enforcer would appeal to you? There's a lot of work that can be done with Gabriel the Devil Hunter, but I'm not sure how close that one is to where you're coming from. Grotesk has potential. You might find Hildegarde interesting, I'd say. Well, I don't know, that's a few that I started to think about maybe. I'll look through a bigger list at some point and probably have better luck there.  :)
In addition to those I suggested above, some other stubs you might be interested in developing:

That's what I posted on his page at least (minus Gabriel, which you did an excellent job on). I'll try to find some more that you might like – Moondark came to mind, for one, and Doctor Glitternight also. BOZ (talk) 16:02, 10 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Just a note re Moshikal[edit]

This is something I commented on at Moshikal's talk page, but I just wanted to drop the note here as well.

The editor is, now and again, hitting infoboxes that have problem images. The one you cited, Machinesmith, is such a case: the old image is from one of the Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe runs. Using those is counter to the project guides since it's pulling an image from an encyclopedia and putting it to the same use.

If Moshikal had left an edit summary (another major issue in and of itself) stating that was the reason for the change, I would have less of a quibble. But without that, it just looks like part of the "newer" pattern.

And I agree with you, it would be nice if he engaged in discussions. It's very, very frustrating that we now got a situation where there are 5 areas for warnings (cut-n-paste moves should have been added with the The Punisher War Journal move, and at 3 or 4 given the editor's history) and 1 notice And that's without the fast and dirty FURring method he's using. - J Greb (talk) 14:35, 20 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I'm aware that fair use does not permit the uploading of images from DC Who's Who and OHOTMU and similar resources.
What's most frustrating, to me, is that Moshikal more than occasionally does upload images that are useful and correctly sized. A good deal of his/her edits are genuinely valuable to the project. Yet despite being reached out to by several editors, Moshikal seems intent on driving the slow road to blocksville. Ford MF (talk) 15:16, 21 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Image source problem with Image:General Slocum.jpg[edit]

Image Copyright problem
Image Copyright problem

Thanks for uploading Image:General Slocum.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, their copyright should also be acknowledged.

As well as adding the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 20:31, 29 July 2008 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. |EPO| da: 20:31, 29 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Psst,

See the edit history on Stellaris - that should make it clear. Rather than edit war with User:Seraphimblade over it, I decided to just recreate it at Stellaris (comics). I'd kindly like to request that you please leave that first one the way it is, as the new one is likely to become a target of deletion if we touch the redirect again. Category:Albums produced by Joe Walsh[edit]

The category has more than one entry in it. But if you look at it, all but one of the albums in the category was co-produced by Walsh and at least two other people. The same was pretty much true of Category:Albums produced by Robert Ellis Orralll, which had six co-produced albums but none produced exclusively by him. This is an automated message from CorenSearchBot. I have performed a web search with the contents of Panopeus (disambiguation), and it appears to be very similar to another wikipedia page: Panopeus. It is possible that you have accidentally duplicated contents, or made an error while creating the page— you might want to look at the pages and see if that is the case.

This message was placed automatically, and it is possible that the bot is confused and found similarity where none actually exists. If that is the case, you can remove the tag from the article and it would be appreciated if you could drop a note on the maintainer's talk page. Hey, please use the "move" tool to move articles to new titles, as that preserves the legally-required user attribution in the page history. Cut-and-paste moves don't keep the history and therefore violate GFDL license. Thanks! - Toon05 16:56, 11 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I knew that. The only explanation I can offer for not having done it that way ... perhaps I had a brief, otherwise unnoticed brain aneurysm. I can't think of any other reason. Ford MF (talk) 16:58, 11 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Orphaned non-free media (Image:Under the volcano.jpg)[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Under the volcano.jpg.

Thank you. BJBot (talk) 05:34, 27 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Origen[edit]

Thanks for your interest and feedback.

I'm sorry to say, but I think I have been waiting long enough: the move was suggested eight months ago!

Moreover, the "Origen" page is not called "(disambiguation)", as you might have noticed.

As for the links under "Modern Uses of the Name", I simply moved them out of the original page where they even less belonged.

Vertigo encyclopedia[edit]

I see you've been adding a lot of references to this - I was discussing the book with ntnon and was unsure how useful it is. What do you make of it?

Also while I'm here - do you think we need a category above Category:2000s comics characters debuts to link it across under Category:Fictional characters in comics? Something like... "Comics character debuts" or "Comics character by debut"? (Emperor (talk) 14:22, 3 October 2008 (UTC))[reply]

Thanks for the feedback on the Vertigo Encyclopaedia - that pretty much confirms my suspicions: it seems so broad n its coverage it is going to rather thin (especially considering series like Sandman have been the focus of books). So I don't think I'm going to be rushing out to buy it.
I also agree with what you say about referencing - there are a lot of resources out there and it is sad that people aren't working on adding these, instead there is a lot of interest in endlessly regurgitating plot. I can only contribute things that interest me largely because there is a vast amount of material out there and only one of me. When I specifically going looking (as I did with Greg Pak and during the AfD for Michael Bair) there are plenty even in online resources, not to mention those in print. Ah well we can only do our best - so thanks for mining the resources you have.
Yes there is no rush on that bridging category. I'll have a bit more of a ponder and see if anything suggests itself. (Emperor (talk) 15:30, 3 October 2008 (UTC))[reply]

Barnstar[edit]

The Categorisation Barnstar
I hereby award this Barnstar to Fordmadoxfraud for his diligence and initiative in fighting over-categorization in WP:Comics and for his efforts in creating and maintaining various character debut categories. Nutiketaiel (talk) 16:45, 3 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

This is for taking the initiative in nominating all those categories for deletion just today, and for the work I see you have been doing recently in helping to categorize comic characters by their debut dates. It's a tedious job, but you seem to have dived right into it, and I think you deserve some recognition for it. Keep up all the great effort! Nutiketaiel (talk) 16:45, 3 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

No consensus at Origen[edit]

I am kindly asking you to re-evaluate the discussion at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Origen, which you earlier closed as "No consensus". Most votes seemed to unambiguously support deletion of the current disambiguation page to make room to move Origen of Alexandria back to Origen, and a move of the current content of Origen of Alexandria to Origen (disambiguation). The "keep" votes either gave no reason, never mind one based in WP:MOS, or demurred on procedural grounds that this was a matter for WP:Requested moves, not AfD. If it is indeed what you feel as well, I'd have appreciated you saying that in your closing assessment, particularly so I know whether to take it there instead of deletion review. But I don't think "no consensus" entirely reflected the discussion. Cheers. Ford MF (talk) 11:49, 7 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

AFD has two outcomes, either delete or not-delete. I felt that there was no consensus to delete the page, and closed as such. Whether the page should be edited, moved, disambiguated, etc. is not a matter for AFD, and you are free (I think) to make the moves that you suggest as a normal editorial action. Stifle (talk) 12:35, 7 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You got a thank you card![edit]

Comic debuts[edit]

Regarding this, shouldn't we categorize articles by only the first debut? I know WP:ANIME has a guideline for something like this, but I'm not sure what WP:CMC says about it. Thoughts? Lord Sesshomaru (talkedits) 18:12, 7 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Redirects[edit]

Do you have something against redirecting articles, so that I don't exactly have to clog the AfD pages as much? When articles aren't going to receive any responses using merge tags, boldly merging or redirecting is an acceptable practice. Reverting them just forces me to nominate them at a later point. Just because I'm some sort of "evil ne'er-do-well" to people, it shouldn't entail undoing completely valid redirects. TTN (talk) 19:10, 12 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

De-facto deleting articles that have recently gone through AfD as keep is disruptive. And the reason you don't want to clog AfD pages with nomination after nomination after nomination is a self-serving one, so I ask that you spare your hand-jive of altruism. Ford MF (talk) 19:14, 12 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Only six of them were in a recent AfD that ended in a keep (which only received three votes that had nothing to do with notability). What was the reason to revert the rest of them? I normally try to stay between five and ten AfDs, but I have to go above that in this kind of case. TTN (talk) 19:22, 12 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

DC Comics Encyclopedia article[edit]

I have been kicking around a few ideas here (and see the matching replies on my talk page). I suspect we should be able to find enough information to give add solid material on background and reception which would be more helpful than other articles which simply list the contents (e.g. OHOTMU) -I know the information I'd be looking for would be what the process would be in bringing this together and what reviewers thought of the breadth and depth of the volume (s). As you've been doing good work dropping in information from the DC and Vertigo ncyclopedias your input would be greatly appreciated. (Emperor (talk) 15:50, 23 October 2008 (UTC))[reply]
