Edits to Preston North End F.C.[edit]
Hi there - thanks for your recent edits to try and tidy up this article - unfortunately though, you have changed all the cases of "Preston are", "the club were", etc. to "Preston is", "the club was", etc. This is incorrect, because the article uses British English (it's tagged at the top of the page), and entities such as football clubs are referred to using the plural in British English - please see WP:PLURALS for further information. I hope you can fix up the wayward edits, as the rest of your work is very good, but it was all done as one big edit, so it can only be undone en masse. No, I did not change it in this case (although I often fix obvious mistakes in grammar and spelling I make after an initial post -- it makes me look less illiterate than I really am!).
I agree with the hesitancy to use the Daily Mail as a citation, but that is different from using it on the talk page.
The reason why sources are essential goes back to the debate in 2005/2006. At that time it was a common sport among journalists to find something wrong in a Wikipedia article and publish this discovery in an article (lazy journalism) -- The response was that many editors agreed that something had to be done. One was to have more good quality articles "Wikipedia:100,000 feature-quality articles" the other was WP:BURDEN (which was added to WP:V in on 30 August 2005). It is "burden" that has lead to most of the huge improvement in the reliability of so many articles on Wikipedia. Which is why citations are so important.
The problem of "link rot" can often be fixed by using the wayback machine or something similar. For example see http://web.archive.org/web/*/http://www.projecthougoumont.com/introduction.html
As to citations. For what information to include see [WP:CITE#What information to include]]. Citations do not have to be put in using templates (see WP:CITE), but templates have three big advantages. The first is consistency in presentation, the second is that they can do a lot of validation on the information provided, and third the information can be parsed by bots that allows for other types of improvements in the future.
The documentation provided by {{Citation}} {{cite web}} and {{harvnb}} explain how to use them. Why {{Citation}} and also {{cite book}} etc, because two different groups of editors originally developed two slightly different citation template families and members of those groups tend to be proprietorial.
In this case if you decide to add the [1] as a citation. I will reformat it if I think it needs it. This will allow you to see a before and after example, which should help you understand how to do add them in future. -- PBS (talk) 15:59, 23 June 2015 (UTC)
