I noticed your message on the Beer Project talkpage about your list of pubs over 1,000ft. I'm glad you have an interest in pubs, as we have a pub taskforce - Wikipedia:WikiProject Beer/Pub Taskforce - which aims to tidy up and organise the pub articles on Wikipedia. Any help in that area would be most welcome!

As for creating an article on a list of pubs over 1,000ft. It's certainly possible, and there are a number of ways of representing the list in table format. Such a list would be a List rather than an Article. Lists tend to have a better chance than articles of escaping scrutiny on WP:AFD as the notability guidelines are more geared up for articles rather than lists. Wikipedia:Stand-alone lists is the main source of advice, and it skirts over the question of notability. However, it does say that a List should be "subject to Wikipedia's content policies, such as verifiability, no original research and neutral point of view." Also "The potential for creating lists is infinite. The number of possible lists is limited only by our collective imagination. To keep the system of lists useful, we must limit the number of lists."

It may be worth thinking about what relevance the altitude of a pub is to the essential nature of a pub. Also to consider what sources there are for such a list, because if nobody has previously collected together pubs by altitude, such a list might be considered original research. My own feeling is that such a list may not be that useful. I've had a look through Category:Lists, and I find nothing comparable. Mine is not the only view though, and others might think differently. Without doing too much work on it, you could put it into Wikipedia mainspace to see the reaction. I would put it up for discussion at AfD, and if it survives that, then it would be OK and you could build on it. People often refer to this -Wikipedia:Listcruft - when considering Lists at AfD, so it may be worth you looking at that. I would think a list of pubs over 1,000ft would fail under points 1, 2, 3, and 8. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask. SilkTork *^YES! 23:22, 31 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for such a detailed reply SilkTork. I've only looked at a couple of your links but the list probably falls down on a number of factors. There is a lot more to Wikipedia than I imagined... Though I'd used Wikipedia in the past I hadn't quite realised the issue of 'no original research'.
I live near what claim to be six of the eight highest pubs in England and, needing to check the status of some others within the same area, the list just grew! But I guess this is trivia rather than stuff for an encyclopedia. And in typing that I was prompted to google 'wikitrivia' -so maybe I'll head off there. Cheers for the time being. Request to participate in University of Washington survey on tool to quickly understand Wikipedians’ reputations[edit]

Hello. I'm part of a research group at the University of Washington. In April, we met with some local Wikipedians to learn what they would like to know about other editors’ history and activities (within Wikipedia) when interacting with them on talk pages. The goal of those sessions was to gather feedback to help design an embedded application that could quickly communicate useful information about other Wikipedians. We have now created a few images that we feel represent some of what our participants thought was important. We would appreciate it if you took a few minutes of your time to complete an online survey that investigates whether or not these images would be useful to you. Your quick contribution would be very valuable to our research group and ultimately to Wikipedia. (When finished, the code for this application will be given over to the Wikipedia community to use and/or adjust as they see fit.)
