Oh genius image-finder...

I am trying to find a PD image of Spokane (horse). I can find several, but cannot verify publication date. I found plenty of stories in PD at Hathi trust and elsewhere, but PD images elude me... I'll go fair use with one if I must, but... can you help? Thanks! Oh, and FYI, I finally got Kenneth and Sarah Ramsey into mainspace! Montanabw(talk) 19:10, 29 January 2015 (UTC)

Here is a PD line drawing [1] as last resort. I'll check DRF and see if they have a better one. Excellent job on the Ramsey article!Froggerlaura ribbit 23:32, 29 January 2015 (UTC)
That may work well enough. There are others, but no clue when first published or if published or date created... [2], [3], [4], [5], [6], DRF has one article but no images [7]. I'd also give my eyeteeth (almost) for a PD image od the Doncaster Round Barn, where the horse got his start: (these aren't PD) Montanabw(talk) 05:16, 30 January 2015 (UTC)
This portrait of Spokane was painted by Henry Stull (1851-1913) in 1889 [8] or [9] for full image, according to the Glendale Museum. And you're in luck because Stull died in 1913, so the painting is PD-100 and usable provided the frame is not included in the uploaded pictured (PD-art does not apply to frames, strangely). Froggerlaura ribbit 05:52, 30 January 2015 (UTC)
You are SO good at finding this stuff! You always manage to point out the overlooked thing that I go "Duh, MTBW" when you point it out to me! LOL! Thanks! Montanabw(talk) 23:39, 30 January 2015 (UTC)

Odds?

Equibase isn't putting up a chart (yet?) for the Dubai world cup? Do you have a different source with the chart, the final odds for the horses, the field size and all the usual stuff that goes into the charts? Anything you can find is much appreciated! Montanabw(talk) 00:45, 29 March 2015 (UTC)

I usually use Racing Post for European or UAE races. Equibase usually takes at least 24 hours to update their charts. Froggerlaura ribbit 01:41, 29 March 2015 (UTC)
I was trying to find their links to race charts... feel like a doofus I can't find them... Montanabw(talk) 06:28, 29 March 2015 (UTC)
It can be kind of tricky. Since they have a paywall for searching by track/race name, the only way you can get to the chart is to know the date of the race and then select the track. Froggerlaura ribbit 16:50, 29 March 2015 (UTC)
Aha! Brisnet is similar that way... and Equibase is apparently not putting up a chart at all... (sigh) Montanabw(talk) 17:39, 29 March 2015 (UTC)

OK, different problem

This in your line of work: new study says Parascaris equorum (an article I created) isn't - it's Parascaris univalens - but then the article says we should now call equine roundworms Parascaris spp.. This is getting close to gibberish to me, as I am not a biologist. Any advice on whether I should rename the article, move it, start a different one or just add the update to what's there? Montanabw(talk) 21:19, 29 March 2015 (UTC)

While intriguing, I wouldn't worry about renaming the article just yet. When I looked at the actual study (researchgate has it but it's a blacklisted link), Nielsen only used worms from six research foals reared in the same barn at the University of Kentucky (hmm wonder if there is cross-poo exposure :) so not exactly a good population cross section (wondering how it got published actually) even for the university population where a one time exposure to a "rare" species could falsely inflate the prevalence data. He wants all retrieved worms to be called Parascaris spp. because it is next to impossible to speciate the two worms without the complicated karotyping technique that no one would do or pay for because there is not appreciable difference in treatment response between the species. The assertion that the published sequences for P. equorum are somehow mislabeled is also odd since he didn't find any P. equorum to sequence and cross-check against his P. univalens data (they can form hybrids between the two species). If he does broader studies that give the same prevalence results, then maybe change it or you could go with the broader scope "Roundworm infections in horses" to avoid the issue. Froggerlaura ribbit 01:37, 30 March 2015 (UTC)
If you could be so kind as to add Parascaris equorum to your watchlist and ping me if you run across more stuff that should be used, I'd be grateful; I appreciate your time on this. Montanabw(talk) 04:47, 30 March 2015 (UTC)

American Faro

Sorry about the edit conflicts, we were trying to do the same things at the same time! Tigerboy1966  23:14, 2 May 2015 (UTC)

No problem, both of us saw the same source :) Wonder why there was a naming contest in the first place? Froggerlaura ribbit 23:16, 2 May 2015 (UTC)
You guys are doing a great job on that article by the way...! Montanabw(talk) 02:52, 4 May 2015 (UTC)
Tigerboy1966 has done all the work, I just did a few ce. Maybe there will be a usable pic soon as the KY guard has made all theirs unusable this year. Froggerlaura ribbit 04:36, 4 May 2015 (UTC)
Cool! Where are they posted?? 20:02, 5 May 2015 (UTC)
Haven't been able to find one yet. Everyone that went is being stingy this year :( Froggerlaura ribbit 01:32, 6 May 2015 (UTC)
Are you just surfing Flickr, or do you have a secret stash somewhere?  ;-) Montanabw(talk) 03:23, 6 May 2015 (UTC)

The Kentucky Guard appears to be releasing their images as "no commercial use" on Flickr - do you have any connections to make them allow commercial use so we can put them up here? Montanabw(talk) 03:28, 6 May 2015 (UTC)

Unfortunately no. I think the change this year may be due to the widespread use of their photos as CC (and seldom any credit given by websites), also loss of $$ from selling the photos, etc. I even did my **super secret trick** of looking at upload day in to find untagged photos (like DSJKFN.jpg and stuff) but to no avail. Though I did find a random one of a guy with a smiley face box on his head making suggestive poses in a cityscape. Now bleaching eyeballs... Preakness may be our best bet for the horse articles unless Bill Brine made it to the KD (if I remember it took him 2 weeks to post last year's Derby photos). Froggerlaura ribbit 04:18, 6 May 2015 (UTC)
Guy with smiley face box....? OK, better your eyeballs than mine! The things we do for "teh wiki". Montanabw(talk) 05:43, 6 May 2015 (UTC)

Not the Derby, but...

2014 Breeders' Cup, but the guy has the "no commercial use" box checked too... do you have a flickr account and could ask him if he'd make the images free for wiki? See what we have here: [10], [11], [12], and [13]. Be cool to get those. Montanabw(talk) 00:17, 7 May 2015 (UTC)

I don't have a Flickr account but I guess now is as good a time as any to make one. Froggerlaura ribbit 23:02, 8 May 2015 (UTC)

meh... help?

I've started to do some work on Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Racing (United States) but in adding images, I discovered that several of the old photos at Commons are designated "Gooreen collection" - I suspect that is problematic. (Example: Assault ). You are kind of guru at this, can you advise on what has to happen with these photos and if they can be salvaged for an FA-class article/list? Montanabw(talk) 20:42, 8 May 2015 (UTC)

I've been researching the "Gooreen Collection" photos for a while and it is just a random collection of low resolution images taken from various sources across the internet. Documenting all/ just deleting all of them has been problematic but I will give it a shot. The best bet for a horse of that era would be a copyright not renewed source (coincidentally I have a print of Assault on my wall :). Froggerlaura ribbit 23:00, 8 May 2015 (UTC)
Here is a replacement image for Assault [14]. There was also one in a non-copyright renewed book but the photo was credited to Bert Morgan (d. 1986) which makes the copyright more problematic than one by an anonymous photographer. There are tons of usable ones in this book [15] too. The non-free photos of Secretariat and Seattle Slew will need additional rationales for this article. Froggerlaura ribbit 23:50, 8 May 2015 (UTC)

Thank you, vet with "a thing for grays", for contributions to quality articles on active racehorses, such as Oxbow and Mucho Macho Man, for articles on early American and British Thoroughbreds, such as Apology, for the Wild Man in your sandbox, - you are an awesome Wikipedian!

Thank God for Maryland

Yay for the Preakness pics going up! I'm going to see if I can crop one that has Ahmed Zayat in it for his article. Then onward... maybe "we" (i.e. you or me, whoever gets to it first) can also do crops of File:American Pharoah wins Preakness Stakes.jpg for an image of Dortmund and Firing Line, who both have articles. And actually, that photo is miscaptioned, it's not the win, it's the first time past the stands at the start of the race, because Mr. Z is the horse in second in that image... and he faded in the stretch... Montanabw(talk) 17:37, 20 May 2015 (UTC)

Yeah, I seem to mislabel it every year :) Memory is not what it used to be. All the Flickr images are uploaded (too many of random people but forgot to uncheck box on upload) and in Preakness category. We probably should make subcategories pretty soon. The angles of the photos are weird this year due to the rain, but Thank You MD! Froggerlaura ribbit 17:50, 20 May 2015 (UTC)
I did it and the rename and made separate cats for each year where we have lots of images and then for 2015 sorted the random-people-only ones into their own little category off the main category, it was basically Larry Hogan and Chris Christie glad-handing people. Derby pics

Thanks for adding pics of the Derby runners, especially Epicuris, who really is a magnificent beast, and was easily the pick of the paddock for me. Tigerboy1966  21:13, 9 June 2015 (UTC)

Rollback

Hi Froggerlaura. After reviewing your request for "rollbacker", I have enabled rollback on your account. Keep in mind these things when going to use rollback:

  • Getting rollback is no more momentous than installing Twinkle.
  • Rollback should be used to revert clear cases of vandalism only, and not good faith edits.
  • Rollback should never be used to edit war.
  • If abused, rollback rights can be revoked.
  • Use common sense.

If you no longer want rollback, contact me and I'll remove it. Also, for some more information on how to use rollback, see Wikipedia:New admin school/Rollback (even though you're not an admin). I'm sure you'll do great with rollback, but feel free to leave me a message on my talk page if you run into troubles or have any questions about appropriate/inappropriate use of rollback. Thank you for helping to reduce vandalism. Happy editing! Beeblebrox (talk) 19:58, 21 June 2015 (UTC)

Jack Hobbs

Hi again, can you get this image [16] added to the Jack Hobbs (horse) article please. Tigerboy1966  20:13, 27 June 2015 (UTC)

Sure thing. If you are doing articles on the other Derby or undercard starters, the pictures are in Commons Category:2015 Epsom Derby. Froggerlaura ribbit 21:20, 27 June 2015 (UTC)

Oh great image-finding goddess...

Can you find a free-use image for Beholder (horse)? I've been stumped. I tried some of the 2013 Breeders' Cup sources we used for Mucho Macho Man, but to no avail. Montanabw(talk) 03:22, 23 August 2015 (UTC)

Hmm...That one is going to be difficult, but I will give it a shot. Froggerlaura ribbit 05:07, 23 August 2015 (UTC)
Odds are probably not good, but with any luck, there was a Japanese tourist at Del Mar yesterday and they'll post their pics cc-3.0 on flickr soon - with helpful titles all in Kanji! LOL! Montanabw(talk) 22:24, 23 August 2015 (UTC)
I did find the jackpot for the 2011 Breeders' Cup on the Japanese version of Flickr [17], which I used to update those articles, but no luck yet on Beholder. Froggerlaura ribbit 02:52, 24 August 2015 (UTC)
I also found this cool video of the wild/feral horses at Assateague Island National Seashore. Froggerlaura ribbit 03:42, 24 August 2015 (UTC)

I never knew there was a Japanese version of Flickr! Your awesomeness is further proved! That video is to die for! It would be fun to add to either Chincoteague pony or Assateague Island National Seashore - or both! LOL! Montanabw(talk) 23:14, 24 August 2015 (UTC)

Beholder

Ripping my hair out looking for a free image of Beholder. Almost wondering about contacting a photographer to see if they'd release an image. Thoughts? (Have scoured Flickr for every search phrase I can think of, skimming images for the racing silks...no luck, though a France Sire video handed up a few blurry images of Wise Dan ) Montanabw(talk) 03:45, 30 September 2015 (UTC)

Still no luck finding a pic. I think our only hope is if they take her to Japan or she takes up National Hunt racing :) Froggerlaura ribbit 04:34, 1 October 2015 (UTC)
Speaking of Wise Dan, here is the gate video from the 2014 Shadwell Mile [18]. I think it's usable, but haven't looked into the owner of account yet to gauge if it is legit. Also have videos for California Chrome [19] and Dortmund [20] KD starts. Froggerlaura ribbit 04:38, 1 October 2015 (UTC)
The other gold mine is Preakness Day when the Governor of Maryland shows up with his photographer and entourage. That's been a godsend the last three years! Montanabw(talk) 16:46, 1 October 2015 (UTC)
Those starting gate videos are amazing! They say that assistant starters have the second-most dangerous job in horse racing, next to the jockeys! I believe it! Montanabw(talk) 16:52, 1 October 2015 (UTC)
CC video of California Chrome at Taylor Made Farm. He's looking good! [21]. Froggerlaura ribbit 04:03, 2 October 2015 (UTC)

Patrol?

If someone else hasn't done this, can you patrol a couple images I uploaded and be sure I did the fair use rationale in a proper manner? Or, given your expertise can you determine a date of first publication to see if they are PD? Many thanks! We have an editor who likes working on the gaited horse articles and I'm trying to give her a hand. They are: File:Roan Allen photo.jpg, File:Merry Go Boy1.jpg, File:Midnight Sun TWH.jpg, and File:Merry Legs and Huda Dement.jpg. Thanks! Montanabw(talk) 04:19, 27 February 2016 (UTC)

  • Merry Go Boy image can be sourced to: Patten, John W. The light horse breeds : their origin, characteristics, and principal uses. 1960. Bonanza Books, NY, page 150. The copyright was not renewed tag. The text and border would have to be removed off of current image. Froggerlaura ribbit 05:04, 27 February 2016 (UTC)
  • Midnight Sun image can be sourced to: Lawrence, Joseph M., and Nic Huddleston. American livestock biographies. 1951. News Publishing Company. Sacramento, CA. page 95. The copyright was not renewed.
You are wonderful! I wasn't sure if the Merry Go Boy image was the identical one, though -- the foot placement looks a little different, the ribbons don't lay quite the same... I don't think it's the same photo... but Midnight Sun sure is, so that's moving to commons! If you can find a different image of MGB that IS the same as in Patten (the Patten photo looks like the background was retouched...) I'd be so grateful. (I don't know if Google's claim of copyright on digitized images would hold up, but it is annoying...). Montanabw(talk) 01:50, 28 February 2016 (UTC)
See what you mean on the previous photo. I haven't found the source for the original, but I did find these [23] [24] of Merry Go Boy. The moire pattern isn't as bad. I also have access to the original books and could do a non-Google scan if you want. Froggerlaura ribbit 02:22, 28 February 2016 (UTC)
You would be a amazing and wonderful human being, and White Arabian Filly would be very happy too! Yes! And ping us when they are up... Montanabw(talk) 03:00, 28 February 2016 (UTC)
Yes, I'd be very happy if you could do that! Thanks in advance! White Arabian Filly Neigh 14:57, 28 February 2016 (UTC)
Here are the Merry Go Boy images. [25] [26]. They could use some contrast adjustment. I haven't had much luck authenticating the Roan Allen and Merry Legs photos but did find other saddle horse photos (My Golden Hour, America Beautiful), Arabian mare Turfa and stallion Fadl. Froggerlaura ribbit 19:16, 28 February 2016 (UTC)

An interesting fact about Merry Go Boy. He was mentioned specifically in the testimony for the 1970 American Horse Act [27] as one of the factors for the increase in soring after WWII. Froggerlaura ribbit 21:46, 28 February 2016 (UTC)

Any notion?

Where to find the actual chart for the 1973 Kentucky Derby? The article is up for GAN and I'm reviewing it, but several of the editor's sources are offline hardcopy and I'm trying to verify some stuff. (Take a look yourself if you want). Montanabw(talk) 03:02, 23 May 2016 (UTC)

Oh Image genius

Do you have the mojo to ask Flickr sources to release images under a free license, in this case, the Kentucky National Guard, who tagged their images with a no commercial use tag? like this one (also pinging Jlvsclrk, who also might have Flickr mojo...) Montanabw(talk) 05:25, 14 May 2017 (UTC)

Hey Montana! Sorry it has taken me a long time to respond. I tried messaging to Flickr users to change their licensing for the KD photos, but got no response. I'm currently uploading the Preakness photos from MDGovPics. Froggerlaura ribbit 19:18, 22 May 2017 (UTC)
Hi there! I don't use Flickr so I can't help there. I did go through the MDGovPics album for this year's Preakness but couldn't find any pics of Always Dreaming alas, except in a group shot as they went by the stands for the first time. I've thought of asking a few people I know on Twitter if they'd like to upload their pics, but I don't want to open up a floodgate if I get some positive responses. Jlvsclrk (talk) 20:13, 22 May 2017 (UTC)
Not the best quality, but these are freely licensed Kentucky Derby photos. There are also two videos of the finish that I will edit later (one has a prolonged view of gentleman's pants crotch :/). [31] Froggerlaura ribbit 20:50, 22 May 2017 (UTC)
