Could you have a look at User:Bhuck/Opposite-sex marriage? There are some graphics there showing maps with where various forms of recognition for same-sex couples exist (Europe, US). Could you create versions which just show two colors: 1) where marriage is exclusively heterosexual, and 2) where it is not?
