Hemaka cup[edit]

- Thanks so much for getting back to me. I am not a regular contributor to Wikipedia and am hence fumbling through reaching you. I'm an Indy publisher (though not generally of Egyptology or Archeology books), but by some strange twist of fate am currently working on a book on a cachette found in the Bubusteion. The book includes short essay history of Saqqara, and I would like to use your image of the Hemaka vase to illustrate this part of the text.
- I am seeking permission to publish a modified version of your image (we would like to change the background, taking down the yellow to compensate for the ambient lighting and adjust the contrast to see whether we can get the hieroglyphics show up a little better). If we can connect via email, I can share the mock ups, etc. Maybe my email went to spam?

- This is very nice of you but there is really no need for such a course of action. I donated the photography to wikicommons so it belongs to everybody, please credit wikicommons instead. I would be happy to help with the captioning and all, as for your book you deserve to be paid for your work so once it comes out, let me know the title so I can buy myself a copy.Iry-Hor (talk) 17:24, 14 January 2023 (UTC)
- Iry-Hor: Thank you for your reply. I'm a traditional publisher, and do like to do things the "old-fashioned way," dealing with real makers and issuing proper credit, etc. I am being paid for my work and would not think of asking a contributor to pay for a copy of a book in which their image appeared (subsequent copies, are a different matter). If you would like to forego that and remain anonymous, that's understandable, especially in this day and age. I do wish you would reach out, if only to review the pdfs, but I again, I respect your decision. If you change your mind, let me know. I hope the start proofing the book around the first of the month and will send your image up for processing today. - Dear Gastaebler the cup bears more than Hemaka's name as your caption suggests (the cup is read right to left, the name are the last three signs "Ḥ", "m3" and "k3"), it actually also give his title so that we may translate : "Seal-bearer of the king of Lower Egypt, Hemaka" or "Hemaka the seal-bearer of the king of Lower Egypt". If you want you can exchange "seal-bearer" with "chancellor" although a modern-day chancellor and an Ancient Egyptian seal-bearer aren't quite the same. I do not know why he is said to be seal-bearer of the king of Lower Egypt since Den, his king, reigned over both Upper and Lower Egypt. This early in the 3rd millenium BC it is quite possible that reigning over both parts of Egypt was seen as really distinct offices and Hemaka may have acted as seal-bearer only when Den acted as king over Lower Egypt, effectively translating "Hemaka, royal seal-bearer over Lower Egypt" although I kind of speculate here.Iry-Hor (talk) 09:16, 28 February 2023 (UTC)

It may be that Hemaka was the Lower Egypt seal-bearer, or chancellor, to the king and that a different individual held that role in Upper Egypt.

- Iry-Hor: It's a busy time getting a book to press, but we are turning all but the index in today -- the job is done! I apologize for not getting back to you sooner. The title of the book is "Vestiges of Ancient Egypt -- The Bubasteion Votive Cachette at Saqqara" ISBN: 978-0-9640348-3-9. I'm not sure yet about availability in Europe, but you'll be able to purchase it through the Houston Museum of Natural Science website and through Amazon.com (US) after it is released in April.
