Editing news 2020 #3

On 16 March 2020, the 50 millionth edit was made using the visual editor on desktop.

Seven years ago this week, the Editing team made the visual editor available by default to all logged-in editors using the desktop site at the English Wikipedia. Here's what happened since its introduction:

  • The 50 millionth edit using the visual editor on desktop was made this year. More than 10 million edits have been made here at the English Wikipedia.
  • More than 2 million new articles have been created in the visual editor. More than 600,000 of these new articles were created during 2019.
  • Almost 5 million edits on the mobile site have been made with the visual editor. Most of these edits have been made since the Editing team started improving the mobile visual editor in 2018.
  • The proportion of all edits made using the visual editor has been increasing every year.
  • Editors have made more than 7 million edits in the 2017 wikitext editor, including starting 600,000 new articles in it. The 2017 wikitext editor is VisualEditor's built-in wikitext mode. You can enable it in your preferences.
  • On 17 November 2019, the first edit from outer space was made in the mobile visual editor.
  • In 2019, 35% of the edits by newcomers, and half of their first edits, were made using the visual editor. This percentage has been increasing every year since the tool became available.

Jersey Crabs help

Hi there. I was looking through the log of Draft:Jersey Crabs and saw you followed through a G6 deletion and was hoping you can help me. Recently, Jersey Crabs was created [1], albeit in user space and looks like a fully developed article at the time of it's creation, including some draft templates. Could you possibly look to see if the deleted draft version matches that version of the article? If it does, it probably needs a histmerge, and it is possible that the newer user is a sockpuppet of the original draft creator who has since been blocked. If there is someone better to help out, could you let me know? Thanks! BOVINEBOY2008 17:45, 10 July 2020 (UTC)

@Bovineboy2008: Hi there. Yeah, it's possible that a histmerge is necessary, it's not clear to me. I'm not sure that I'm qualified to do that, or investigate it properly, it's not an area of admining that I specialise in. Probably best to ask on the admin board. GedUK  07:46, 13 July 2020 (UTC)

You declined a speedy before however I tagged this copy and paste, simply because the same content is already on Aftab Shivdasani, I don't see why we need a copy of the content in another article. Govvy (talk) 15:26, 17 July 2020 (UTC)

@Govvy: It was a genuine attempt to split the page, so the CSD criteria didn't apply. GedUK  12:26, 21 July 2020 (UTC)

Hello,

I was wondering if you could please allow me to create Robert Musgrave as a redirect to Bottle Rocket? Hitcher vs. Candyman (talk) 01:59, 20 July 2020 (UTC)

@Hitcher vs. Candyman: I'm not really sure I see the point. GedUK  12:31, 21 July 2020 (UTC)
In that case, please disregard this message. My humble apolgies. Hitcher vs. Candyman (talk) 15:05, 21 July 2020 (UTC)
I didn’t want to recreate Robert Musgrave since it’s been deleted more than once. I figured instead of an article, it could be a redirect to Bottle Rocket, since Musgrave plays a significant role in that particular film. Hitcher vs. Candyman (talk) 15:15, 21 July 2020 (UTC)
It’s kind of similar to how Chuck Aspegren is a redirect to The Deer Hunter for example. Do you get what I’m trying to say? Hitcher vs. Candyman (talk) 15:21, 21 July 2020 (UTC)
Never mind. Just forget it. My humble apologies. Hitcher vs. Candyman (talk) 20:36, 21 July 2020 (UTC)
