External link[edit]

External links should serve as links to external contents that explain more about the subject of an article where the contents cannot be included here in Wikipedia. A copyright material is one good example of an external link. Wikipedia is an encyclopaedia, where contents matter, rather than links. That's why Wikipedia is not a catalogue or a directory of links (see WP:NOT). What you inserted in the page is not appropriate per WP:EL guideline. The link goes not to explain directly to the subject, but to another directory site about the subject's works. For this particular guideline, see WP:ELNO item number 13. Hope that helps you understand. Dekisugi (talk) 18:30, 12 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

If you find any other links like that, they can be removed at anytime. Dekisugi (talk) 18:44, 12 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I think that Dekisugi has explained my reason for removing the links. As I explained in my edit summaries, the links that I removed went to a general search page rather than a page containing information specific to the subject of the article. If the Ryerson & Burnham Libraries are widely recognized to hold significant collections relevant to the subject of an article it may be appropriate to mention that in the article (citing sources independent of the archive that show this widespread recognition) and provide an internal link to the Ryerson & Burnham Libraries Wikipedia article, which per our external links guidelines can have a external link to the archives website. However, linking the Ryerson & Burnham Libraries website from every article where there is a holding in the archive related to the subject of the article would be regarded by many Wikipedia editors as spam. The other thing that you might want to consider is if any of the contents of the archive can be used as sources for facts in our articles. Wikipedia is always looking for reliable sources to use as references for the material in our articles. Note though that references would need to link directly to the item in the archive and not to a general search page. As an aside, please do not feel specifically targeted; I remove any and all external links that I find if I do not feel that they are appropriate in the context of our external links guidelines, and you are welcome to do the same. —Jeremy (talk) 22:37, 12 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page.
