It was fine so I'm moving it back--Degen Earthfast (talk) 17:52, 31 January 2020 (UTC)

Degen Earthfast, it really wasn't, none of the sources establish notability (two product reviews, four links to a company website, and a database entry, so none meet the threshold of significant coverage in reliable, independent sources). Please leave it in draft until those issues are fixed. creffpublic a creffett franchise (talk to the boss) 17:58, 31 January 2020 (UTC)

Administrators' newsletter – February 2020

News and updates for administrators from the past month (January 2020).

Guideline and policy news

  • Following a request for comment, partial blocks are now enabled on the English Wikipedia. This functionality allows administrators to block users from editing specific pages or namespaces rather than the entire site. A draft policy is being workshopped at Wikipedia:Partial blocks.
  • The request for comment seeking the community's sentiment for a binding desysop procedure closed with wide-spread support for an alternative desysoping procedure based on community input. No proposed process received consensus.

Technical news

  • Twinkle now supports partial blocking. There is a small checkbox that toggles the "partial" status for both blocks and templating. There is currently one template: {{uw-pblock}}.
  • When trying to move a page, if the target title already exists then a warning message is shown. The warning message will now include a link to the target title. [1]

Arbitration

  • Following a recent arbitration case, the Arbitration Committee reminded administrators that checkuser and oversight blocks must not be reversed or modified without prior consultation with the checkuser or oversighter who placed the block, the respective functionary team, or the Arbitration Committee.

David James Connolly Australia

FYI - as you have recently interacted with David James Connolly Australia: I have raised a report at WP:ANI raising my concerns of undisclosed paid editing by them. Dorsetonian (talk) 09:15, 9 February 2020 (UTC)

Dorsetonian, thanks for the heads up, I see MER-C has dealt with it. creffett (talk) 14:03, 9 February 2020 (UTC)

Thanks for your guidance

Thanks for your guidance
I took your advice and added 23 sources and citations to support the page information. I had planned to do this after it was published because that seemed easier, but now I realize that I should have done it first so that it would not be flagged. Thanks. About ComputerSupport.com deletion

Hello! I saw that ===ComputerSupport.com=== wiki page was deleted. The page was live for more than 4 years. I assume that someone edited the page with some information about one of the founders - Kirill Bensonoff in the attempt to create a Wiki page for him and mentioned an Amazon url which was irrelevant. However, the ComputerSupport.com wiki page, as it was before that edit included relevant information about the company, the cooperation with CITRIX etc. Could you please reactivate the page?

Let me know.

Thank you,

Mike

The page was deleted for lack of notability. If you have reliable, independent sources which have significant coverage of the company, you're welcome to create a draft and put it through AfD. That said, if you have a conflict of interest with the company, I'd recommend that you just let it stay deleted. creffett (talk) 14:05, 9 February 2020 (UTC)
Thank you for your reply! The collaboration between ComputerSupport.com and CITRIX has been nothing but notable (https://finance.yahoo.com/news/computersupport-com-launches-next-generation-181630428.html). Basically, with Citrix, ComputerSupport launched a new generation of cloud hosting solution powered by Citrix Netscaler® VPX, Citrix XenApp® and Citrix XenMobile®. This is how ITAnyWhereCloud - a trademark was born, which is a faster, more scalable cloud solution with a focus on providing substantial savings over the on-premise infrastructure. Also, a Wikipedia admin has approved the page 4 years ago. It was live since then. Why wouldn't be notable anymore?
Let me know your thoughts. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 193.106.124.191 (talk) 11:07, 10 February 2020 (UTC)
Like I said, if you have reliable, independent sources, you can create a draft and put it through AfC (sorry, meant AfC, not AfD). The link you posted appears to be a press release, and press releases are not independent (and so don't establish notability). Also, the page was not "approved by a Wiki admin" - it was undeleted in 2016, but that's not the same thing as approval. It's not so much "it's not notable anymore" as "it wasn't notable in the first place," it's just that nobody submitted it for a deletion discussion until now. You seem to have a connection with the company, so as I said before, I recommend just letting it stay deleted; trying to push for an article about a company you're affiliated with isn't likely to get the article created. creffett (talk) 00:17, 11 February 2020 (UTC)
I don't have any connection with the company for more than 2 years. So I don't really care if it's approved/deleted. But I consider it notable because of the product they developed and improved since 2013 onwards. Also, let's say finance.yahoo.com is not independent, I don't really know, but what is trully independent beside, maybe, Wikipedia. There were several sources listed on the deleted page. Were all of them promotional/affiliated? Let's take a look at this Wiki page - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schrafft%27s it has broken links as references, but there is a link to a book for sale on Amazon and another one on books.google.com. I am not saying Schrafft's is not notable cause it is, but the sources don't strike me as independent. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 193.106.124.191 (talk) 07:45, 11 February 2020 (UTC)

Promotional content

I created a page that was flagged as promotional. I was puzzled by the comment as an effort was made to keep it factual and neutral. It is describing an open industry specification and is not vendor specific. I've made a few edits and have one more planned, but I'm struggling a bit to understand specifically what needs to change. Any hints or tips would be appreciated. GoBuck76 (talk) 16:52, 10 February 2020 (UTC)

GoBuck76, I wasn't the one who tagged it as promotional, I'm the one who proposed deletion. I did that because I don't think oneAPI meets Wikipedia's general notability guideline: significant coverage in multiple reliable, independent sources. Of the five sources, two are links to the oneAPI website (not independent), one to the Intel implementation (likewise), one to apress (since it's done "in partnership with Intel," not particularly independent), and one to Phoronix (which is generally not considered to be a reliable source). If there is significant external coverage from major industry publications, that would establish notability. HPCWire might be a reliable source, but you'll want to find some more. creffett (talk) 00:10, 11 February 2020 (UTC)
Creffett, thank you! That was very helpful. I have added citations to the page. GoBuck76 (talk) 18:30, 11 February 2020 (UTC)

Can you make a template?

Hi, can you please make template my sandbox? I have to copy paste it currently, a template would be handy. Thanks! Puddleglum 2.0 21:58, 10 February 2020 (UTC)

Puddleglum2.0, sure! I'll take a crack at it. creffett (talk) 00:17, 11 February 2020 (UTC)
Puddleglum2.0, here you go! {{GOCE-welcome}}. You were 99% of the way there (honestly, you could have done {{User:Puddleglum2.0/sandbox}} and it would have worked pretty much perfectly, all I did was mark it for auto-substitution). Want any parameters to go with it? creffett (talk) 00:32, 11 February 2020 (UTC)
Thanks a lot! I have no idea how all the template stuff works, that is not my area of specialty. :) I don't think it will need any parameters, but I'll reach out if stuff changes. Thanks again, Puddleglum 2.0 01:21, 11 February 2020 (UTC)
Hello again! I just used the template and realize that it leaves four tildes plain, and doesn't convert them into the sig. Could you fix that? Sorry, I don't know anything about templates. :D Thanks a ton, Puddleglum 2.0 16:06, 12 February 2020 (UTC)
Puddleglum2.0, oops, I'll investigate tonight. creffpublic a creffett franchise (talk to the boss) 17:02, 12 February 2020 (UTC)
Puddleglum2.0 think I've fixed it, give it another try and let me know if it doesn't work. creffett (talk) 03:08, 13 February 2020 (UTC),
Hi, I think that will work. Thank you so much again! Puddleglum 2.0 05:18, 13 February 2020 (UTC)

New Page Reviewer newsletter February 2020

Hello GeneralNotability/Archives/2020,

Source Guide Discussion

The first NPP source guide discussion is now underway. It covers a wide range of sources in Ghana with the goal of providing more guidance to reviewers about sources they might see when reviewing pages. Hopefully, new page reviewers will join others interested in reliable sources and those with expertise in these sources to make the discussion a success.

Redirects

New to NPP? Looking to try something a little different? Consider patrolling some redirects. Redirects are relatively easy to review, can be found easily through the New Pages Feed. You can find more information about how to patrol redirects at WP:RPATROL.

Discussions and Resources
Refresher

Geographic regions, areas and places generally do not need general notability guideline type sourcing. When evaluating whether an article meets this notability guideline please also consider whether it might actually be a form of WP:SPAM for a development project (e.g. PR for a large luxury residential development) and not actually covered by the guideline.

Deleted material retrieval + appeal on speedy deletion

Dear Creffett, first of all, thank you for the time you have committed to Wikipedia.

I have a couple of requests. You nominated the article for EXILE Content for speedy deletion back in May 2019. Although I did not agree with the nomination, I deferred to your judgment, given your experience and seniority on Wikipedia. When I created the article, I made the mistake of editing directly on Wikipedia, so I have no backup for the content. I wanted to ask you if you can recover the deleted content from the archive for me so I can update and improve the article. Once updated, I can submit it for your review. I believe it now exceeds the guidelines for notability as it has had a considerable amount of press coverage since.

Best regards,

--Calfaro (talk) 00:57, 19 February 2020 (UTC)

Calfaro, I'm not an administrator, so I can't provide copies of deleted pages. Normally the correct procedure would be to contact the deleting administrator...but in this case the deleting administrator is no longer an admin. Hmm. I'll look into what to do in this situation. creffett (talk) 01:14, 19 February 2020 (UTC)
Dreamy Jazz, you're listed as an admin willing to provide copies of deleted articles - would you mind helping out here? RHaworth was the original deleting admin, so need someone else's help to undelete the article, and I can't send Calfaro to REFUND since this was an A7 deletion. creffett (talk) 01:22, 19 February 2020 (UTC)
Creffett, sure. I have emailed Calfaro with the content. Dreamy Jazz 🎷 talk to me | my contributions 01:36, 19 February 2020 (UTC)

Speedy deletion of my article

Hello. Please is there anything I can do to reverse the speedy deletion of my article? And if not, can I get the content of the article back? Zema Ali (talk) 15:15, 20 February 2020 (UTC)

Zema Ali, you can ask the deleting administrator (Stifle) for a copy of the article. creffett (talk) 23:56, 20 February 2020 (UTC)

Okay. But is it possible to contest deletion of the page? Zema Ali (talk) 09:29, 21 February 2020 (UTC)

Zema Ali, since an admin already deleted it, no. creffpublic a creffett franchise (talk to the boss) 13:50, 21 February 2020 (UTC)

An ill-suited tag in Myroslav Yagoda article

Hello creffett, you added a tag to the page Myroslav Yagoda and indicated some issues:

  1. This article contains wording that promotes the subject in a subjective manner without imparting real information=== Not true at all, the article combines views of multiple art critics with clear references
  2. This article has an unclear citation style === the Literature items (sources) are numbered, according to their appearance in the article (the main text and the references). What in particular is not clear?
  3. This biography of a living person needs additional citations for verification === the person passed away in 2018 (very clearly noted in the very first line)

Please remove this inappropriate tag. --Yuri Git (talk) 09:48, 21 February 2020 (UTC)Yuri Git

Yuri Git, in order:
  1. I tagged it as subjective because of the use of phrases like "true integrity in his diverse art," "became a true cult figure of the Ukrainian art underground," and "he brought the reader into his imaginative worlds."
  2. You correctly cited things in the article, but it's not in the standard Wikipedia style of inline citations, please see our inline citation style guide.
creffpublic a creffett franchise (talk to the boss) 13:59, 21 February 2020 (UTC)

Hi creffett, to address your further comments.

  1. I tagged it as subjective because of the use of phrases like "true integrity in his diverse art," "became a true cult figure of the Ukrainian art underground," and "he brought the reader into his imaginative worlds." === Please note that those phrases are not my subjective opinion, but the opinions of professional art critics. Just to indicate the values of this artist: today his solo exhibition was opened in the National Art Museum of Ukraine that is the #1 national art stage.
  2. You correctly cited things in the article, but it's not in the standard Wikipedia style of inline citations, please see our inline citation style guide. === As defined in the guideline, I used the classical "References" section that is placed near the bottom of the article. Do I miss something?
  3. You're right, that was a mistake on my part - I checked the wrong box when selecting tags. Fixed.=== Still you left this part "This article needs additional citations for verification". What do you mean? Can you be a bit more clear?.

Once again, please remove this inappropriate tag. --Yuri Git (talk) 16:42, 21 February 2020 (UTC)Yuri Git

Yuri Git:
  1. I'm not saying that the artist isn't important, but if you have sources that actually use those phrases, then you should cite them. Also, since those are still kind of subjective opinions, we prefer to say that the source called him by those phrases - so something like "(newspaper) called Yagoda a true cult figure of the Ukrainian art underground" instead of "Yagoda is a true cult figure of the Ukrainian art underground" - does that difference make sense?
  2. I've gone ahead and reformatted the citations and removed the citation style tag - you did correctly cite things, the problem was that they weren't in the Wikipedia format of using <ref> tags, which turns the references into links to the reference section. Since I don't speak any of the languages used in the sources you cited, I'd really appreciate it if you could double-check how I cited them in case I made any errors.
  3. Again, this is partly because I can't read the sources, but I marked it as "needs citations for verification" because we don't have any citations for the Biography section (his birth and death, schooling, "mental disorder," things like that) and it's particularly important that biographical details be properly cited. If one of the existing sources does give that information, let me know and I can mark those with the appropriate references.
creffett (talk) 03:45, 22 February 2020 (UTC)

Many thanks, creffett, I appreciate your help and efforts to improve the article. To address your further comments.

  1. I'm not saying that the artist isn't important, but if you have sources that actually use those phrases, then you should cite them. Also, since those are still kind of subjective opinions, we prefer to say that the source called him by those phrases - so something like "(newspaper) called Yagoda a true cult figure of the Ukrainian art underground" instead of "Yagoda is a true cult figure of the Ukrainian art underground" - does that difference make sense?=== Yes, I got your point. Just added a clear reference (according to your citation format!) to the "true cult figure". Not sure there are other critical "subjective opinions" that require sources, in order not to overload the article with references.
=== You did a really great job with all the foreign languages, highly appreciated. No errors - and I've learned the required format.
=== I can add, but this is a kind of common knowledge (including his mental disorder, for example, in this article that you can Google-translate to English) that mentioned in many sources. In addition, I was in touch with the artist family, and double checked and further verified all the details. Again, I do not want to add reference to every common statement...

I hope that the article has been really improved now, and you can remove the tag. Many thanks again. --Yuri Git (talk) 09:34, 22 February 2020 (UTC)Yuri Git

About 'Peter Sweatman' article

Hello @Creffett:. Thank you for your comments on 22nd February. Apologies for the slow reply, I replied on my own talk page but it seems that isn't how you do it! However, you are in fact mistaken - I am not being compensated in any way for my writing, I am merely an admirer of their work/speeches and noticed they didn't have a wiki page. As you can probably detect, I am new to wikipedia and perhaps my writing style is not in accordance with the desired format so of course I will go to every effort to ensure it is improved. If you had any further advice, I would appreciate it greatly. Thank you for your service to wikipedia, it's great that new writers like me can get tips and feedback. Ollie Farr (talk) 11:13, 25 February 2020 (UTC)

Ollie Farr, thanks for the message. I'm sorry, but your contributions so far give the distinct impression that you're either being paid to edit the article or at the least have a significant conflict of interest, so I'm going to leave the tags. I'm currently asking around to see where it would be appropriate to take this for further discussion, I will reply again once I've figured out where that is. creffett (talk) 01:27, 26 February 2020 (UTC)

Creffett, thank you for your response and for providing the COI page. However, from my interpretation of the page, mere admiration for someone's work is not enough to qualify for a conflict of interest. If it is the style in which I write the page, then I would be more than happy to remedy any areas you highlight. Thanks for referring someone else - I look forward to their input. Ollie Farr (talk) 10:04, 26 February 2020 (UTC)

Ollie Farr, I understand you're saying that you're not paid and have no COI, but I'm not sure what other noticeboard would be appropriate for reviewing this than the conflict of interest noticeboard. I'll open a discussion there so that other editors can weigh in on the matter. creffett (talk) 00:32, 27 February 2020 (UTC)

Help

Dear Creffet,

You undid a modification on General Duval WP that I have done, as a cross-link on WP is - to my now understanding- forbidden if it links to another WP (in that case : french language WP). Is my understanding correct ? What should I do in this case ? Redoing the edit without the link to the French WP (General Duval was a prominent general of WWI and has created the first Air Division on history, and should, according to my point of view, be mentionned) ? Thank you by advance for your advise

Best regards

BihacVet (talk) 15:36, 12 February 2020 (UTC)BihacVet

BihacVet, the reason I removed the link is because we don't do cross-wiki links on disambiguation pages. If there's an English Wikipedia page for Gen. Duval, then you're welcome to add that to the disambiguation page. I'll look into this more tonight, I might be misremembering the rules - there might be a rule for adding an "other languages" section to a disambiguation. creffpublic a creffett franchise (talk to the boss) 17:04, 12 February 2020 (UTC)

@Creffett OK I fully understand the motive. I am not sure a cross-wiki would be appropriate in this case. Can I still create the reference to this person (Gen Duval) without having a cross-wiki link ?

Thank you very much for the time you have devoted to this conversation

Regards

BihacVet (talk) 17:36, 12 February 2020 (UTC)BihacVet

BihacVet, the basic rule for disambiguation pages is that they should only contain links to subjects which have existing English Wikipedia pages. However, you could create a stub article about Gen. Duval and then you could link that. In fact, since there's an existing French Wikipedia article on him, I'd encourage you to consider translating the French article into English, or at least using it and its sources to create an English article. I'm not a French speaker, so I wouldn't be much help translating (and I know better than to trust Google Translate), but I'd be happy to lend a hand if you need any help with formatting, article style, etc., just let me know. creffett (talk) 02:57, 13 February 2020 (UTC)
