What should the caption say?[edit]

Another user started extensively trimming the caption for this picture. I have asked them to discuss their reasoning for this edit. And I suggested they discuss it here. -- Geo Swan 07:11, 3 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Picture[edit]

A picture is usually a simple description, not an article unto itself. The actual description of the trailer and the methods used in it shoudl either be in the article itself, or in it's own sep article, linked in the picture desc. I have no problem with the info, just the placement. Hope that clears it up? If you have any further suggestions/concerns, leave them on my talk page, and I can reply back wherever you like Zotel - the Stub Maker 13:04, 3 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  1. Agreed. Picture captions are usually simple descriptions, not articles unto themselves.
  2. You regard the caption I authored as an article unto itself? I don't regard it is an article unto itself.
  3. Do you know the aphorism attributed to Einstein? "Things should be made as simple as possible, but no simpler." While captions are usually short, I don't have a problem with the occasional one that is not short.
    • It costs over $100 million, per year, to keep Guantanamo open. That makes the strange venue of the Tribunals worthy of description.
    • Admiral Harry Harrison, the current camp commandant, described the three suicides in June as "acts of asymetrial warfare". His comment is not an aberration. IMO, that comment correctly reflects the attitude of the other senior officers, like Colonel Michael Bumgardner, and Dr Phil Edmondson.
    • I think a description of the Tribunal's venue is highly relevant, so readers can decide, for themselves, whether the camp authorities chose a venue that would send a message to the detainees about the Tribunal procedure's importance. Guantanamo is not a temporary base. The USA has occupied it for over 100 years. 10,000 people live there. If the camp authorities picked a cramped, windowless trailer with bad acoustics as the venue for the Tribunals, it is not because there weren't more dignified venues available. It reflects a conscious choice.
I recently created [[Template:Combatant Status Review Tribunal trailer image and caption]]. Now, when I add the image to additional articles, I will add it using that template. That means there is one central place where the caption can be edited and discussed. When I edit articles that already have the older, longer caption, I will try to replace that with an instance of the image and caption template.
