Vandalism is a strong word...

Missing Template

I am temporarily adding a yet nonexistent template because I want to add the colors to the template that use that template. The template {{Shades of brown}} will be installed shortly after I copy the colors into it. Otherwise, I would have to go to each page, get the color, go back to the template and insert the color, finish and save the template, then go back to all the pages I just visited and re-edit them to add the link to the template. Fish

Howdy, I saw your note in the Fish article. I was (at least if my memory serves me) the one who added the word "most" to describe fish. Specifically at issue are Lamiform sharks and some species of Tuna (I know less about the latter) which have the ability to raise their body temp above that of the water. At my fingertips (although not necessarily the best reference on the subject), see Goldman, Anderson, Latour, and Musick. 2004. Homeothermy in adult salmon sharks, Lamna ditropis. Anyway, when I made this edit, I figured that there must have been a good reason to move Bowser to King Bowser, so I re-redirected that page to the disambiguation. False accusation of vandalism

I was not engaging in vandalism and I resent the accusation. Vandalism would be adding profanity, nonsense or other graffiti to the page. I was making an editorial change on the grounds that it is ludicrous for Wikipedia to treat the American Georgia on equal terms with the country. Grade skips

Mentioning grade skips was to prove a point, though it's not entirely irrelevant. Presumably grade skips are less common than grade repeats, for whatever reason. The anon argued in his summaries that "let's be neutral here", which "we" already were sufficiently IMO. But if we're really being "neutral", as in "including all possible ages", we ought to consider advanced students too, shouldn't we? If I have time I'll see what can be dug up. - Keith D. Help requested

I'm writing to you - and others - because you are one of several people who appears to have experienced the same thing as I have noticed and experienced.

Namely a pattern of vandalism by an anonymous user. The IP # is 66.229.10.64

This user has been temporarily blocked several times. I notice that the pattern is the same.

The person doesn't seem to respond to polite community requests to engage in dialogue - or to desist from repeatedly making edits that several editors consider to be vandalism.

We should keep this article neutral. This article is not about the United States. There are other countries too. 6th grade or 8th grade is either the final year of elementary school. It says so in my dictionary. 5th grade can be the final year...but it's not always. Saying 6th grade is a part of secondary school sounds more neutral than saying it is part of middle school. middle school means junior high school too. so which one should we take? It's better if we say secondary school. But we can all agree that 6th grade is a part of secondary school to many nations.

Depending on the situation, different tools may be more appropriate than others; without going into too much detail, common options include blocks, page protection, and checkuser. If this problem is isolated to one page or a few pages, protection is usually sufficient. Re: Gender-neutral language

I don't really have any strong feelings about gender-neutral language. I generally try to phrase things to avoid potentially ambiguous pronouns, but have no qualms about using an indefinite "he". I don't find edits that purely aim for gender-neutral language to be necessary, but as long as they don't make things worse, it doesn't really matter.

In the case of the multiple choice edit, it broke the second paragraph ("The responses are independent of the taker's ability to be clearly with language or handwriting."), and a quick revert was as good of an option as fixing it up. --Xanzzibar 07:59, 25 February 2007 (UTC)

I dont really mind which one it is. At the time this account was created, I used the term 'nonagon'. The fact is, I still use the term 'nonagon'. If you can convince me that there is a good reason to change from Nonagon to Enneagon (I think Nonagon sounds so much better, as well), I might start using it more often, but in interim, I will stick with nonagon. You might already know this, but... the most recent change to the redirect was made by User:Superjustinbros. who is the same as 24.184.46.20. As you can see, his talk page is a glorious and inspiring collection of barnstars and praise (not that mine is any better).

I think instead of a sentence at the bottom of the article the armadillo hack should be under external links, but I'm too lazy to actually find it.

Color controversy

I notice you seem to be very knowledgeable about color. In the past six months I have written many dozens of articles on color for the Wikipedia. I got the idea to write my first article, which is now my longest article, rose, beginning last September from a comment you made on a discussion page, when you mentioned that it was the opposite of Spring green. Since then, I have written or expanded dozens of Wikipedia articles on color. I was wondering if you could do me a favor? You seem like you like colors so could you do me the favor of going to the discussion page of the violet article and voting under the heading "Which Way Forward" that you favor keeping the "Shades of violet color comparison chart" (if that is your preference)? I am trying to keep the articles colorful and interesting and some of these other people keep wanting to delete a lot of the information and make the articles dull and uninteresting. WUBL

Naming convention states that if there are no other articles named "WUBL", this station should be located at WUBL. If other articles exist, WUBL should be a dab page, and the article should be located at WUBL (FM) (the naming convention for stations that can't be located at their callsign, but have no suffix), not at WUBL-FM. Chicago/Chicago, Illinois

I admit that I personally haven't moved any of these articles until I moved Chicago to Chicago, Illinois, but if you look at other cities (with the exception of New York City, but that's an exception due to the unusual case of the city and state being the same name. It looks abnormal for an article to be titled "New York, New York.") you will see that almost all cities are moved to "city, state" format. Prime examples include Los Angeles, California, Dallas, Texas, Seattle, Washington, and Boston, Massachusetts. The reason for this is because of disambiguation; pages like Boston and Dallas have disambiguation pages. Chicago also has a disambiguation page, so moving the page to Chicago, Illinois format helps to distinguish Chicago (city) from Chicago (band), Chicago (typeface), and Chicago (poker game). Additionally, with the exception of NYC, I haven't seen many other articles who are currently titled just the City, and all the others in the past that have had that format have been moved to the new format because of disambiguation. When I moved the article, the basis for doing that was because, with the exception of a select few articles, all the others have recently been moved to this new format to avoid disambiguation further. ––Ksy92003(talk) 17:56, 15 July 2007 (UTC)

I'm not sure how that would work... I personally think Chicago should contain the disambiguation links, but I don't want to do anything myself because I know Chicago is linked to by a lot of other articles, and it would be too disruptive to change that. So because of that, I think it would be best to re-direct Chicago to Chicago, Illinois and say "'Chicago' redirects here. For other uses, see Chicago (disambiguation)." That's what I would do, but again, too many pages link to Chicago for me to want to take a risk of it going to the wrong page. You're missing the point. Do you have an actual reason to want to keep this? If you do, please state it. Relying on "Discussion is needed" or anything like that is not a valid reason to keep an article. The fact that two people felt it was necessary also doesn't mean that the article needs to be kept. It cannot pass the fiction guidelines, and it belongs in the main article. TTN 21:06, 20 July 2007 (UTC)

Most of the time, discussions on articles like these will not receive a response. I only bother when I expect to be reverted or there are active editors working on it constantly. That is why I would like you to provide an actual reason. It is perfectly fine for you to want to keep the article; that is when the discussion can start. But that cannot happen if you provide roundabout reasons like that (because reverting solely on the reason to have a discussion doesn't work). So in short, if you actually want to keep it, provide an argument or just a statement as to why it should stay, and it can be discussed. TTN 21:11, 20 July 2007 (UTC)

LuigiManiac seems to be a infrequent editor, so holding an article just to wait for his opinion is rather pointless (plus, people have no connection to the articles that they create (WP:OWN)). PBS idents: We do not censor

I have put the first two logos back where they are -- removal of logos just because they scare someone is censorship (see Wikipedia:WikiProject Wikipedians against censorship). Please understand this -- the next time someone removes a logo on account of scaring, they will be officially warned; if they persist, they will be blocked. A pre-teen is aged 10-12. Not 8-12. Think of all the stuff on that article. Like knowing about sex. An 8-year-old doesn't need to know about that stuff. Oh, I'm sorry, honest. I would never intend to make people feel nervous, I'm very sorry. I call myself "Mr. Comedian" because I want to star on a sitcom that I made up when I grow up. List of centenarians

Yes, size is definitely going to be an issue with this page. For #9, I think one picture in the top right would be sufficient, though I don't know who/what to use for it. For #5, I think one short paragraph would be sufficient. 1-2 sentences discussing what a centenarian is, 1-2 sentences discussing our inclusion criteria and 1-2 sentences describing the technical aspects of the list (how it's divided, what it means to have a bolded/italicized name etc.) should be sufficient.

The bigger issue is with the references. Even referencing properly two of the smaller sections, the size significantly increased. I imagine that it'll be around 200 KB if we properly reference all the entries. I'm not certain what to do about it really... maybe split it into different pages, but I can't think of any non-arbitrary way to split up the names. I was hoping to get this to FL status eventually, but I'm not sure that would happen if the page was that large. Cheers, CP 18:38, 11 December 2007 (UTC)

What is your basis for this most common use of NFL malarky? It's more popular in America of course but it is totally subjective to say the American use of NFL is the most common use of the term worldwide. Saying wikipedia has more links to NFL America is not adequate. The fact that NFL already links directly to the US NFL should suffice. That's because the NFL page was set up containing info on the American version first. Your most commonly tag is totally ridiculous. It's completely subjective. The term might most commonly mean NFL in the US but that doesn't mean it's the most common usage of the term. Why saying NFL most commonly refers to America is so important is not clear at all. Quadrocasts

You left a note on the discussion page of trimulcast. They are actually refered to as quadrocasts, not quadrimulcasts. There was 107.1 in New York, it consisted of what today is WLIR, WWYY, WWZY, and WXPK. It was owned by Big City Radio and aired a Country music format. re: your recent change to Template:Afd top

Can't we just deal with that kind of change to the page through common sense? Do we really have to spell out every possible exception like that? I am concerned that we are making our already serious problem with instruction creep worse.

If we do stick with that change, we need to clarify the clause with a link to the help page on changing your username. Otherwise, we risk 1) confusing new users who have never heard of a user changing their signature or 2) suggesting a new form of vandalism to someone who wouldn't otherwise have thought of messing with the signatures. • Further words in the series have -t- where the Latin cardinal does, and not otherwise; look up decuple.

Christine Jorgensen was in fact a guy. He may have undergone sex reassignment surgery, but his chromosones remained 100% male. Having parts removed, others altered, and taking hormones to encourage other changes does not in fact change your gender. He was born a man and he died a man.

Vandalism would require a deliberate mischievous or malicious destruction or damage of property. Or in this case, a wiki entry. That is not what I did. Sesame Street media

Hey GG, I went to Sesame Street for my daily editing, and found that all of a sudden, it shrunk! I went, whoa, what happened here, and then discovered that you had created a new article! As Elmo would say, Yahhh! Christine's so proud of you!!! ;) You actually had the Pride (cue Goo Goo Dolls) [5] to do that, something I couldn't bring myself to do. That's awesome. You should think about nominating yourself for a DYK; the more The Show is on the front page, the better, I always say.

I do think, though, that eventually we should include a summary on the parent article, perhaps when we're finished with the research for it. You might have noticed that I'm spending about 1 1/2 hours each morning adding/improving Sesame Street and its ancillaries. What I'm doing is combing through all the major sources I have and adding the information I've missed the first time. Right now, I'm on the Davis book, and then I'll start on the big huge anniversary book (Giklow), and then some articles and miscellaneous sources. It's gonna take a while, but I think it's worth it because the end result will be amazing. I think what you did yesterday had done much to improve the mommy article, which was so huge and clunky before. The edit style is very similar to a Disney-article vandal that pops up every now and again (fortunately, not the lord-high Disney vandal of all time). If you'll notice, the sentence posted is in the past tense, yet references Thanksgiving 2012. This anon does occasionally do constructive edits, but at the same time has a nasty habit of posting hoax sequels and things like that. Again, the edit style is usually the same--sentences in past tense describing future events. If you see anything else similar to this, especially in actual articles, I'm sure you'll take the appropriate action. More Sesame Street

Hi GG, wanted you to know (if you haven't already noticed on your watchlist) that I've finally completed forking content from this article. The end result: four new articles, three DYKs (with one pending), and a significantly shorter article. It's still long--56 kilobytes--but it's much shorter than before. I think that it's going to be a longer article naturally, anyway. I'd still like to add one short, summarized section (Sesame Street media). It's also in need of a good copyedit, but even without it, I still think it's GA-quality. Personally, I'm very proud of what we've been able to accomplish. I'm new to wiki so I don't know all the tricks yet. In the Microsoft Office article (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microsoft_Office) it is stated: "Microsoft Office 15 will be released most likely in 2013." Hey there. I totally sympathize with you, trying to deal with this repeat offender anon. That said, it is acceptable for users, including IPs, to delete warnings from their talk pages. Deleting them doesn't make them go away for two reasons: (1) deleting it is generally translated as having seen it, so they can't plead ignorance (it's kinda like those "you opened the shrink-wrap so you've agreed to the end-user license agreement" stickers on software); and (2), a patrolling admin looking into a report will almost certainly look through the edit history of the page and see the IP deleting stuff, as if to cover their tracks. I left a final warning regarding the IPs posts on Talk:Walt Disney Animation Studios, and I fully expect them to delete it, so if they do this again, don't worry about the warning and go ahead and report them to WP:AIV. Hey there ... I saw you had undone some changes made to List of Pixar films, but in your edit summary you listed them as "vandalism". While I completely agree that the edits should have been undone (primarily because they were uncited), in the Wikipedia sense they weren't really vandalism. Most likely it was the work of an over-eager fan who believes that's what's coming out or heard someone talk about it on a Pixar fan forum or something to that effect; in other words, they were trying to be helpful, not malicious. Now, if they kept adding it, then the edits become disruptive, which is indeed considered vandalism. A simple warning to the IP should take care of things, along with explaining that such edits should be sourced.

I can't believe that you didn't know better--that you don't remove such a large amount of content on any article without discussing it on its talk page first. So I reverted the article to the version before your changes. If you believe that the article would be better without the sections you removed, that's fine; I respect your opinion and all, but I wish you would've brought it up for discussion first. And then I could disagree with you. Remember, the previous version is a FA. I mean, I'm all for forking articles to make them more readable, since that's what I did to Sesame Street (another FA), but I think the discussion about The Show's development is an integral and fascinating part of its history. Reverting edits

Greetings ... while I'm glad you're helping with the various Disney film articles, I do have to take umbrage with your edit summaries. For example, when you reverted this set of changes, you labeled it as vandalism. This is nothing of the sort. These edits are attempting to improve the article, even if they contain errors. Vandalism is much more narrowly defined than changing something that winds up not being fully supported. One of Wikipedia's top policies is to assume good faith; that is, assume that the editor just wanted to add information, but isn't fully up on how such information should be vetted by sources.

In the future, please refrain from randomly throwing around the term "vandalism" when reverting edits. You run the risk of running off potentially good editors who simply made the mistake of not including a source. That's easily fixed with constructive notes and assistance and without branding them as vandals. --McDoobAU93 14:59, 17 December 2011 (UTC)

To answer your question from my talk page: Here is a good example of a good-faith edit that should be reverted because no source for that statement was provided. I reverted the edit here, then left a note on the user's talk page here explaining why I reverted it and what I would be looking for in order for it to remain. This editor certainly is not a vandal.

That said, if they continued to try and add it back without citation, despite being told by myself and other editors, then the edits become disruptive, which is one form of vandalism. Vandalism is intended to do harm to the encyclopedia, and with that particular edit, I didn't see that intent. For that matter, in most cases, we're supposed to assume good-faith at first, anyway.

I'm hoping that answers your question, but if you have other concerns, you can leave them here and I'll respond.

Looking at the history of recent edits of that article, I see a number of good faith edits by another editor, with proper edit summary explanations, reverted by you, with summary: "Revert several recent edits; go to the talk page of WP:MOS". And 5 minutes after you posted the Talk:MOS message, you reverted that editor again with the comment: "go to the talk page of WP:MOS if you need discussion". The edit summary is the proper place to explain your edits and if not enough space, add "see talk" to your comments and continue on the article talk page, or post a note or question to the other editor's talk page.

The main reason I reverted your edit on Talk:MOS because it is a waste of time to post there. If you will look at the other editor's edit count, it is very apparent that that editor is only interested in editing articles. In the past more than 5 years, more than 1000 article edits, but only 1 talk page edit. Not very talkative. None of us is getting paid to be here. Some people like to spend their time editing articles, and some like to spend their time talking. Most are somewhere in between. Re: Office 13 redirect

Hi, with regards to this edit, I can understand your rationale in redirecting the heading back to Office 2010. The point is that, Office 03 directs to Office 2003 and Office 07 directs to Office 2007. Office 10 is a version number, so it's reasonable for it to refer to Office #10.

For the case here, there is no Office version #13. The original redirect is reasonable if there was no Office 2013, but now that it does, Office 13 more explicitly refers to Office 2013 instead of Office #14 (of which it already has Office 14 to redirect to). Since I see you've taken up 'gender-neutralizing' chess articles again, and I believe you think any gender-specific pronoun can (and must) somehow be eliminated, based on the mistaken notion they are offensive or excluding or discriminatory, how about a little example to test your moxie? ... The following sentence appears in article Grünfeld Defence, I'd like to see how you would 'neutralize' it, without making it stand out in weirdness like a sore thumb to the audience of millions of players in the chess world:

I'm not saying that I insist the sentence be gender-specific, I'm just saying that "in which the objective of each player is to lose all of his pieces" is at least an improvement on the ambiguous "the objective of the players is to lose all their pieces". I agree that a clear gender-neutral wording would be even better, and if you want to write one, go for it. I'd advise ignoring User:Roxette Fanatic entirely. It's a given that the article will be updated with new information when it becomes available. I personally think that discussion should be limited to how an article can be improved now rather than discussing what information might come and could be introduced. I noticed that you reverted my addition of a hatnote to the New York City article, saying that the hatnote wasn't necessary. I would argue that it is necessary because there are plenty of cities called "New York", and New York (city) redirects to New York City. A hatnote should therefore link to the list of other cities, which is located at New York (disambiguation). Would you disagree?
