The Taff Valley and the 'Cardiff Valley'?

Hi Ghymyrtle, I remember in a previous discussion you said that you were a professional geographer? As such, I'd be grateful for your insight at South Wales Valleys. Welshleprechaun recently made an edit suggesting that the Taff Valley is also known as the 'Cardiff Valley'[1] I'm somewhat confused by this as I've never seen this phrase used in any books or maps, and Cardiff itself is relatively flat. Mari Jones

My only objection to this - and I think it would be widespread (insofar as anyone is interested) - is that this is the English wikipedia, so we should use the English form of her name, by which she is most commonly known. English people would not think of looking for her under "Mari Jones" - most are not even familiar with the name "Mari". (I know a few people called "Mari" and they are endlessly getting called "Marie"!) However, it is curious that the Welsh wicipedia doesn't call her "Mari" - I don't know why that is. Dumnonia

I have read through a recent version and it looks good. About Slaughterbridge there is also an idea that the battle of Gafulford was there. I wonder whether the hundred divisions of Cornwall are relevant as they could be interpreted as three petty kingdoms: Trigg, Wivel (under a lost Cornish name) and the western territory which was perhaps divided into four by Athelstan. The main problem of course is the lack of reliable facts and sketchy archaeology.--Felix Folio Secundus (talk) 07:08, 25 July 2009 (UTC)

British rock

Irish nationality is something of a minefield, although more often with those not living there. My feeling is that northern Irish figures should be included in both United Kingdom (I admit British is a bit more difficult) and Island of Ireland articles. Them and Van Morrison were lumped in with the British Invasion, and deserve a mention since, most critics think, there work was among the very best and influential. I can't see any point in depriving them of credit because someone else thinks they are not British.--Sabrebd (talk) 18:32, 27 July 2009 (UTC)

Dysgraphia

As my user page says, I have Dysgraphia feel free to fix any, grammar and/or spellings in any of my edits. Anybody can edit Wikipedia, we don't discriminate against disabilities so far. In regards to the rest, I don't think your use of words like "clearing up mess" in edit summaries is really very constructive.[2] Its all well and good sitting around chiding on the talk that you wish somebody would get their finger out and really give the article a push to try and bring it up to a higher level, but then bemoning those who actually crack on, actually put a lot of work into it and try to get it done, with this sort of unconstructive criticism. - Yorkshirian (talk) 12:36, 28 July 2009 (UTC)

OK thanks, I'll read what you sent me. I am definetly open to all kinds of article collaboration with other users, it was just these ones which I wrote was from my notebook - which I did while I was blocked, so its sort of months of work all at once and there wasn't an oppertunity to do the talk thing first? Good point. I just have zero-patience when it comes to the whole neo-Druidic obscurantist thing which seems to effect certain.. ahem, people. By the way, can you explain the revert which says "section needs to refer to pre-AS elements of folklore", on the article talk? I only removed the irrelevent "The origin of much folklore in the area which is now called England pre-dates the Anglo-Saxon invasions" sentence, not pre-AS folklore. The origin of much of everything in England pre-dates the Anglo-Saxon invasions, including Roman archictecture, including art, including various food products and many other things. The Angles and Saxons themselves in the overall "culture" of England haven't been significant since the 11th century, so it seems kind of irrelevent. History of Wales

I'm not sure how it came about, and I'm not sure I'm that much a fan of it either. However, I'm even less a fan of linking within bolding - I think that makes otherwise perfectly fine articles like 2009 Iranian election protests look unprofessional. Not bolding descriptive titles does free us from having to bend over backwards with the phrasing and linking (ie, the article doesn't have to say something like "the history of Wales is the recorded history of the country of Wales"). At any rate if this wants to be a featured article some day it ought to follow the style guides. I suppose we could ask for others' opinions over at MOS:BOLD.--Cúchullain t/c 14:50, 8 August 2009 (UTC)

Postscript

A postscript to our rock music genres discussion: I happened across this online version of some of the history we addressed, written by the principal contributor to The Penguin Encyclopedia of Popular Music, Donald Clarke. Outside of the fact that it is a very interesting read, he discusses several of the points I mentioned about the direction "rock" took in the 1960s and mentions the differences between the radio station licensing and infrastructure in the United States and elsewhere. The thought occurred to me after listening to a rock station I enjoy, WXRV, recently play "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised" that, in 1968 when Martin Luther King was murdered, black music became more highly ethnocentric and differentiated from rock in the U.S. for some time, leading up to the disco era. The disco era then further established "rock" onto the "whiter" side of the tracks, with events such as Disco Demolition Night during a baseball game demonstrating a backlash against disco. This all probably has you thinking we are weirder than you thought before, eh? Well, just food for thought, I hope you enjoy. I don't think the Outline of rock will go anywhere, in part because of the issues you brought up, and I don't think that is a bad thing—let the articles themselves explain all this, it's too complicated for an outline just yet. Makriyialos

We have a naming convention for Greek names, WP:GREEK. According to that, Μακρύ Γιαλός (the name of the municipality) should be transliterated as Makry Gialos. Apparently the name of the village within the municipality is Μακρυγιαλός (Makrygialos). If a different spelling/transliteration is overwhelmingly used in English (in reliable references, that is), we should use that, if it's not that clear, we can mention other commonly used spellings (υ is often given as i, and γ before i is often given as y) in the lead, and provide redirects. I would stick to the WP:GREEK transliterations Makry Gialos and Makrygialos. Markussep Talk 09:45, 26 August 2009 (UTC)
If you look for Makrygialos and Makriyialos in Google Books (which is more reliable than raw Google), Makrygialos has more hits. Most of them are about the archeological site, and also a few travel guides, probably for the beach. The municipality Makry Gialos / Makri Yialos has less hits, which doesn't surprise me. I'm not sure whether village and municipality should have separate articles, I think that only adds to the confusion. The (combined) article isn't enormous anyway. Tiffs, blocks & rants

I honestly didn't expect to post to this page this side of hell freezing over, but I would like to thank you for you timely intervention on User talk:Jza84 this afternoon. I was checking some facts in response to the 'rant' and saw you had used what can only be termed your 'good offices' to calm matters down. Doing that was way above and beyond, and was to your great credit, especially considering our 'previous'. Lists of people

Why not try this? You could put the list of notable people in the article's talk page, work on the citations, and then put the information back into the actual article when you are finished. How does that sound? WhisperToMe (talk) 13:10, 14 September 2009 (UTC)

  • Each entry needs one citation that says that the person lived in the city; that's all. Search news.google.com by typing in the person's name and the city, and you will find references for it.
  • Linking to the Wikipedia article is not enough; the citations must be in the city article too.
  • In terms of the living people on the list, having unreferenced entries is a problem and can be very contentious. Wikipedia:BLP stressed that information about living people must be sourced, or else it may be removed with no discussion
  • Because WP:BLP exists, unsourced information about living people should not sit around, and rot. We had problems during the Seigenthaler incident, which is why we made BLP.
  • So, remove the unsourced stuff from the article now, put it in the talk page to work on, and put it back when you are done.
  • If you want, I can show you discussions from the BLP noticeboard which talk about this.

Hi. I've added a comment to the talk page about municipality/town names. I wonder also if you would consider this: as an example of a local tourism site in the external links, southeastcreteholidays.com is a far better example than the existing link to makrigialos.net. It is more recent, and far more comprehensive. I would change this myself, but can't, as it would represent a conflict of interest. Recent discussion on Cornwall

The previous consensus seemed the best compromise to me but it is always liable to be disputed by some who think like British Watcher. No-one will ever know how many people born in Cornwall or resident in Cornwall think of themselves as Cornish, English or British or partly one and partly another. Even though I was born in Cornwall I do not think of myself as Cornish in the way people whose whole ancestry is Cornish (mine being from England). I think the current wording of the para under discussion is a long way from perfect - but my suggestions to improve it just seem to lead to comments from the usual suspects that would leave it even worse than it is now.
