I'm sorry, but your vote was made after the pool's closure, and is commented out. Sorry for that! Happy 2021 Eumat114 (Message) 14:23, 12 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

just a slight note, this is meant as a gesture to minimize confusion among the vote counters. On the pools, previous pools have the tradition for which post-closure votes are removed. Happy 2021 Eumat114 (Message) 00:15, 13 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

The article Games Research Inc has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

The coverage (references, external links, etc.) does not seem sufficient to justify this article passing Wikipedia:General notability guideline nor the more detailed Wikipedia:Notability (companies) requirement. WP:BEFORE did not reveal any significant coverage on Gnews, Gbooks or Gscholar. If you disagree and deprod this, please explain how it meets them on the talk page here in the form of "This article meets criteria A and B because..." and ping me back through WP:ECHO or by leaving a note at User talk:Piotrus. Thank you.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Poems by publication or composition years[edit]

Thanks for the cleanup on Candidate for a Pullet Surprise and A Grandchild's Guide to Using Grandpa's Computer. I was unsure of whether the year of a poem should be the year it was written or the year it was published. For the first poem/article you used the publication year (1994) in the shortdesc but for the second you used the year it was written (also 1994, it was published 1995). Should these be consistent? – Reidgreg (talk) 09:25, 15 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Reidgreg: I tend to base short descriptions on the text that I find in the lead. In these cases, there is only one date in the lead, so that is the one I used. I suspect that both leads could be expanded to talk about when the poem was written as well as when it was first published. Then the SD can use the earliest of these dates — GhostInTheMachine talk to me 10:05, 15 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Disambiguation link notification for July 20[edit]

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Quigley, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Cogley. Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

Wikipedia:Short description[edit]

Hi!

You recently reverted this edit to the article Wikipedia:Short description in which I added:

; for reference, This sentence uses exactly 40 characters

stating that "The helper displays a character count". I did not realize that the helper did this since this is not stated anywhere on that page and I had never used it but it is useful information so thank you for letting me know about this feature. Although I am not upset about this revert, I also do not see what problems are caused by including this (or some other) example of a 40-character sentence and was hoping that you could explain. IMO the benefit of including such an example is that it allows readers to instantly get an impression of what a short description's maximum length looks like; this can only help editors to stay within the 40 character limit (can you see a situation that I don't in which it would do the opposite?) This was the reason why I added this example sentence; because like most people, I do not count the number of characters that I type and so I initially did not have any sense of what exactly a 40 character string looks like. The point is, I do not understand what harm was caused by the inclusion of this example and so I was hoping that you could explain it to me so that I do not make such edits in the future.

On a related note, is the Shortdesc helper gadget enabled by default? (I ask because I have activated/deactivated many gadgets and so I cannot tell if it is enabled by default.) If it is not enabled by default then since this character counting feature is not mentioned in the article, how is a typical Wikipedia editor with default settings supposed to know that the helper displays a character count? And what about editors who for whatever reason, do not want to (or cannot) enable this gadget? Is there some way of helping them stay within the 40 character limit?

Thanks Mgkrupa 17:21, 21 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I have updated the page WP:SHORTDESC to include more information about the gadget and the character count — GhostInTheMachine talk to me 20:38, 21 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

You have been blocked indefinitely from editing certain areas of the encyclopedia for disruptive editing. I'm kind of dumbstruck by your not in the short description edit summary, GhostInTheMachine. To me, that is a major red flag that you may lack the competence (WP:CIR) to edit in this topic area. I don't really know what else to say.

Your User page[edit]

Hello @GhostInTheMachine: I am new to Wikipedia editing and came across your user page and have a few questions. How does the nav bar template work? How does the user box homepage work? What and where are the categories from? and why does it say you are a new user on a banner in the talk section, but says you have 15+ years in the other section? I have a few other questions but I don't want to bombard you, to much :) DannyHatcher (talk) 11:55, 8 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Welcome aboard @DannyHatcher:.
  • How does the nav bar template work? — Templates are a way to include some common piece of text into many articles. A wikitext link uses square brackets but a template is included into a page using curly brackets. Normally the "master" template will be kept in a page which is in the Template namespace, but the curly brackets can include text from anywhere else. In my case, I created my personal navbar in a sub-page under my user page: User:GhostInTheMachine/t/nav/ for sub-page, t for template (just my way of grouping the templates together), nav for navigation bar. The navbar is then included at the top of my other pages by using the curly brackets {{User:GhostInTheMachine/t/nav}}. Templates need not be plain text or just wikitext, they can include code — in this case {{ #time:Y-m-d H:i:s|{{REVISIONTIMESTAMP}} }} which gets the date and time when the page was last edited.
  • How does the user box homepage work? — User boxes are just small templates that display in a rectangle of a fixed size. There are a lot of them already — see Wikipedia:Userboxes and Category:Userboxes. I have also created a few of my own, such as User:GhostInTheMachine/UBX/Polite to cats. My "home" page then has a table of these boxes using {{Userboxtop}} and {{Userboxbottom}} at the top and bottom of each column to keep things tidy.
  • What and where are the categories from? — Many of the categories are a side-effect of adding a userbox to the page. The userbox template generally sets a category which then list the users who display that userbox. See Category:Wikipedian web developers. Any page can add categories as well — normally at the bottom of the page by adding a special "link" to the category. For example, the page for York has lines like [[Category:County towns in England]] at the end.
Thank you for your questions. Happy to help further if I can. If I am not around, then you can also ask general questions at the TeahouseGhostInTheMachine talk to me 21:04, 8 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thankyou for all of that! I was looking at the edit view and was trying to figure things out. I will keep looking around and will copy that text into my own space for ease of location.DannyHatcher (talk) 21:22, 8 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hello GhostintheMachine just letting you know I've restored minster town to Doncaster as it has been used for a long time on wiki, is recognised and like Dewsbury Halifax and Rotherham. Doncaster is a minster town. Don't understand why you removed it but I've restored it with sources that mention minster town..if you have any issues with it please take it to the talk page. If removed again I'll revert it back to minster town use. Thanks and have a nice Christmas DragonofBatley (talk) 05:56, 24 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
