Removal of dead references[edit]

Hi, please don't remove references from articles solely because they are dead, as you did on Benjamin Adegbuyi. Most links added to Wikipedia are archived in the Wayback Machine, so if you do find a dead source, please first check if there's an available archive. that sounds interesting. I added some of the archived links back, but did not include ’’url-status=dead’’ in the code. So this bot, if I understand correctly will automatically detect those links and add an ’’arhived’’ text to the code? How do I activated it, or does it do that by itself? If you use the visual editor, there is a spot to mark the ref as dead. If not, please include url=dead in the code.

As for the bot, it can fix dead links, and, if you choose, add archives to pages that aren't dead yet. Just a fyi, it fixes links that return an error, but won't (irrc) fix links that just redirect elsewhere unless you choose the option to add archives non-dead pages. I would advise doing a random check of the output, at least until you get more experienced with the tool. Another thing, I just checked your edit, and you should leave the non-archived url, even if it's dead, under "url=". Just add in a "|url-status=dead|archive-url= (insert archive link here)" and "|archive-date=(insert date here)"

Hi! So I just ran the bot with ’’adding archives to all non dead references’’ and I see that this means all links appear as archived on Wikipedia. I really thought this option was merely to archive them on the wayback machine, to save links on a page that appears to have many dead links. So theoretically I can undo the change in Wikipedia, and the links will still remain archived in the wayback machine? Then I can run the bot again without checking the optional tickbox, so that only dead links appear archived ? Thanks a bunch. This has been really helpful so far! Yes, they will still be archived on wayback machine, but I don't think you need to undo the change in Wikipedia. It's helpful in preventing linkrot, and I don't believe there's any guidelines against it.

Just an FYI, most external links added to wikipedia are automatically archived, so you usually won't need to manually create an archive. ARandomName123 (talk)^{Ping me!} 22:54, 21 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
