Recent edit reversion

In this edit here, I reverted some information that appears to be a violation of our copyright policy.

I provided a brief summary of the problem in the edit summary, which should be visible just below my name. You can also click on the "view history" tab in the article to see the recent history of the article. This should be an edit with my name, and a parenthetical comment explaining why your edit was reverted. If that information is not sufficient to explain the situation, please ask.

I do occasionally make mistakes. We get hundreds of reports of potential copyright violations every week, and sometimes there are false positives, for a variety of reasons. (Perhaps the material was moved from another Wikipedia article, or the material was properly licensed but the license information was not obvious, or the material is in the public domain but I didn't realize it was public domain, and there can be other situations generating a report to our Copy Patrol tool that turn out not to be actual copyright violations.) Can you please refrain from adding irrelevant images to sections of various articles. Multiple of your recent edits have involved adding random images into articles that have no relevance to the section they are inserted into. Bare urls suggestion

Hello, and thank you for your efforts to improve Wikipedia, and in particular for adding references, as you did to Scotland! However, you should know that adding a bare URL is not ideal, and exposes the reference to linkrot. It is preferable to use proper citation templates when citing sources. A bare URL is a URL cited as a reference for some information in an article without any accompanying information about the linked page. In other words, it is just URL copied and pasted into the Wiki text, inserted between <ref>...</ref> tags, without title, author, date, or any of the usual information necessary for a bibliographic citation. Here's an example of a full citation using the {{cite web}} template to cite a web page:

Lorem ipsum<ref>{{cite web |title=Download the Scanning Software - Windows and Mac |publisher=Canon Inc |work=Ask a Question |date=2022 |url=https://support.usa.canon.com/kb/index?page=content&id=ART174839 |access-date=2022-04-02}}</ref> dolor sit amet.

which displays inline in the running text of the article as:

If you've already entered one or more bare urls to an article, there are tools available to expand them into full citations; try the reFill tool, which can resolve some bare references semi-automatically. Please stop adding unreferenced or poorly referenced biographical content, especially if controversial, to articles or any other Wikipedia page, as you did at Louis Makepeace. Content of this nature could be regarded as defamatory and is in violation of Wikipedia policy. If you continue, you may be blocked from editing Wikipedia. The file File:Annie Lennox Why Music Video.png has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

WP:DECORATIVE non-free use of a video screenshot in Annie Lennox#1992–1993:_Diva which fails WP:NFCC#8. Non-free screenshot such as this are sometimes allowed when the screenshot itself is the subject of sourced critical commentary or is used to illustrate some representative filming technique per WP:NFC#CS, but neither of those apply in this case. The video and the song it's for are mentioned in that particular section are mentioned, but none of the relevant content requires the reader actually see this particular screenshot. There's no sourced critical commentary about Lennox's physical appearance in the video or any of the make-up or costuming that she used; so, there's no reason why the reader needs to see Lennox as she looked in video. Omitting the screenshot will not be detrimental to the reader's understanding of the section in any way.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated files}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the file's talk page.

Please consider addressing the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated files}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. The controversial motto in question here has been included as the national motto on the article since as far back as September 2007 with no dispute. I would have thought, and as is mostly common and courtesy, that such a bold edit and removal of long-standing information is usually discussed and agreed between others first. You have been around here perfectly long enough to know what the general rules and best practices are when making edits, and that you, yourself, believe yourself to be right is no justification. It could be argued that you should be providing references to support your claim that Scotland does not have a motto. Why has a piece of information that has been included since around September 2007 with no dispute suddenly caused such upset here? Goodreg3 (talk) 22:01, 3 September 2023 (UTC)

I'm addressing the continually disruptive nature you of your behaviour, not content. Discussion of the article should take place there. That said, long-standingness of material does nothing to absolve it from being supported by sources. What's more, the supposed motto that I removed on 3rd June is not the one that was in place in September 2007 and you yourself have been flip-flopping between advocacy of one or the other. I have never made any such claim, that Scotland has no motto, instead that there is far from clear support from the sources that it does have one. That's the way it works here; that material must be supported, not that anything is allowed unless actively disproven. Seriously, whether you've been here 8 or 16 years, you can't be under that misapprehension? Do you want this to be a rigorous and accurate work of reference or do you just want to “win” by getting things in, on a technicality, that you believe to be true?
