The general thing is to get as much about 1883 and close events out of the main article into the separate article - it was getting to big and too many punters were getting into i want to add amazing facts syndrome - without a cite or RS in sight. Gold star editors

A team of people hand-checked five thousand articles for vandalism for the Schools Wikipedia, after they have been passed for quality. The check process started with taking the two most reliable editors a month apart and comparing the diffs. This showed up vandalism etc in versions saved by different editors and some (even among admins) were much more reliable than others in fixing all problems with an article whenever they edited. Realising this speeded up the process and we started swapping names of the really reliable editors. You were one of them. Probably I should have gone round and said thank you to them all but I was an exhausted heap by the end of it. --BozMo talk 18:22, 16 January 2009 (UTC) --BozMo talk 18:22, 16 January 2009 (UTC)

I have no idea what you did to fix the problem. You linked me to a discussion page that links to other pages that may or may not be what you did and your edit history gives me no clue. So, in the future, should the problem arise again, I should fix it by .... By doing what? --KP Botany (talk) 20:08, 25 January 2009 (UTC)

"SLAP!" <--- head thwacking thump. Got it. --KP Botany (talk) 21:41, 25 January 2009 (UTC)
You know that page you linked me to with the FAQs may seem obvious to you, but nowhere in the top section does it say to edit the interwiki links in the other language. That's what I could not get. It seems obvious after the fact, but I bet the majority of Wikipedia editors edit in only one language, especially en-wiki editors. It would have been easier, in my opinion, to just say go change the links on the other language Wikipedias. It gets to be frustrating being linked to policy pages or essays that don't clearly state something, like that some of the bad links may be on other language Wikipedias. Anyway, problem resolved, understand what to do in the future, generally got a lot of good straight-forward information and help from the post, thanks for the doing the work. --KP Botany (talk) 05:59, 26 January 2009 (UTC)
Oh, heck, or maybe that's not what you mean.... --KP Botany (talk) 06:00, 26 January 2009 (UTC)

ID erase request

Sorry to butt in again, Graham. Happy New Year! This time I have been helping edit the Qualia page. And at 10.17 and 10.11 today (Feb. 4) I have again inadvertently left the equivalent of dirty footprints, namely my computer's ID, on the history. Abject apologies in advance, but I wonder if you could cover the tracks. Femtoquake (talk) 13:03, 4 February 2009 (UTC)

I see. But it is a collaborative effort, so perhaps under these circumstances a word from me will do the trick. It is of course OK with me. Edmond Wright (talk) 13:24, 4 February 2009 (UTC)
I view page histories as self-contained - you should be able to gather all the information about the edits from just looking at the page history, without having to use article talk pages or other random talk pages. I granted the last request because (IIRC) the edits were reverted straight away by the same IP address and it wasn't a violation of attribution licenses. I wouldn't do the deletions ... and I'd be very hesitant to ask for them publicly because of the Streisand effect. Some people might see the request for IP deletion and take it as an insentive to publicise the IP address as widely as possible ... I know it's wrong and it's harassment, but there are some very shady characters lurking around Wikipedia. However i'll point you to Wikipedia:Requests for administrator attention and probably the admin's noticeboard might be the best place to get a third opinion about expunging the IP address from the history. Hope some of this made sense. Graham87 14:11, 4 February 2009 (UTC)
If you frequently log out like that, maybe make your logged in interface distinctive by choosing a different skin or add some gadgets so that you can immediately tell when you're logged out. There was a discussion giving some more tips for situations like that but I can't remember where it is now. Regards, Graham87 14:19, 4 February 2009 (UTC)
I see. Not to worry. Thanks for the explanations. People might exploit the Streisand effect to sell their tomatoes. (Whatever you do, don't telling anyone I am selling cheap tomatoes, etc.) Actually it was only a floating IP address this time, so it's OK. Thanks for the hints on how to avoid this happening again. I assume there is no warning message that comes up before saving because it is Wikipedia's policy to put the minimum number of obstacles in the way of contributors? It strikes me as a bit strange not to have such a reminder. Femtoquake (talk) 23:58, 4 February 2009 (UTC)
By the way, had you noticed that the second message in this discussion did not come from me? I was helping that new user upload his stuff, and briefly logged out for 3 edits by mistake. So your argument about attributing the history to someone else does not in fact apply, as it was in fact myself keying in all the material, albeit not my own composition. Femtoquake (talk) 00:32, 5 February 2009 (UTC)
Yes, I was on the phone to EW at the time and he was telling me what to do, concerning those (yes two) edits. Apparently the original author in this sentence had used Cricket Ball not Tomato to illustrate the argument, both being round and red objects. I am sure I won't make this IP again as I changed my "skin" as you suggested. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Femtoquake (talkcontribs) 01:24, 5 February 2009 (UTC)

Requesting 5 articles which were deleted

I notice that you are listed on: Category:Wikipedia administrators who will provide copies of deleted articles.

I am requesting 5 deleted articles to be userfied, pretty, pretty please :):

From: Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Log/2008 November 15

You can move all 5 pages to a userspace, lets say user:ikip/Intellectual Property and Art Digitization, with the history intact (I am interested in who created the article, and when).

I really appreciate it. You are probably wondering why I ask. Well, I have spent my weekend on a graph found here: User:Ikip/AfD on average day. I am interested in what type of user gets their page deleted, etc....November 15 is just a day pulled out of a hat by another user.

Thanks :) Ikip (talk) 01:49, 13 February 2009 (UTC)

CUES article

Hi Graham87,

G'day mate! How's it going down under? Thank you for setting me up with a place to improve the Credit Union Executives Society article before resubmitting it-User:Mmpartee/Credit Union Executives Society. (You helped me out back last October.) Please take a look at the revised version and see if you think it will pass muster. I know the article isn't cited, and it should be, but I'm not finding sources online at the moment. Thanks again for your help. P.S. Congratulations on your many barnstars. Quite impressive! Sincerely, Morriss --Mmpartee (talk) 03:37, 13 February 2009 (UTC)

Cool. I hear you on the self-promo thing, but I think the business schools add some credibility. Thanks for the tip on the two independent references. I'll see what I can do and then try it out in its proper spot on wikipedia. --Mmpartee (talk) 04:01, 13 February 2009 (UTC)

History merge and rename needed

Hi Graham, as you seem to be the master of this, I wonder if I could ask a favour. The Fahan School needs to be renamed to remove the "The", per the schools own website. It looks like a copy-paste job was done in May 07. Thanks mate. (it just bugs me). Djanga 07:20, 17 February 2009 (UTC)

Thankyou muchly. Djanga 07:39, 17 February 2009 (UTC)
I think that creating a subpage was sensible. Djanga 08:08, 17 February 2009 (UTC)

I had Fred Reid on my watchlist as there had been several attempts to create an article on an amateur squash player by that name. I see that there is apparently someone else by that name and that you moved the article into userspace, but I can't seem to verify that there is any such user by checking the logs. So, this is basically pure curiosity as to what exactly is going on here. Beeblebrox (talk) 21:01, 19 February 2009 (UTC)

I'm cleaning up very old accounts, registered before the changeover to a MediaWiki database in January 2002. Any account registered before that time, then subsequently abandoned, didn't exist in the database even if it had contributions associated with it. For example, see User:Mike Dill. I'm restoring their user pages and creating accounts for them so that their usernames can't be taken over by other people, either well-intentioned new users or vandals - I have found a few cases where vandals have taken over old usernames.
Unfortunately, the only evidence there is for a user named Fred Reid existing is this edit to the Wikipedians page; No edits by him survive, even on his contribs page on the Nostalgia Wikipedia. This doesn't mean that he made no edits at all - all his edits might have been wiped out in the early days (see Wikipedia:Usemod article histories for more info on that). But , to be honest, I'm a little suspicious about the user's existence because of the tone of the user page, and the fact that with most old users, at least one edit from them usually survives. One reason that no edits survived in this case could be that he only edited frequently edited pages.
An account creation doesn't appear in the logs for him that are linked from his contribs page because I created his account - it appears in these logs though. I'm creating accounts for these old users with my admin account, partly to bypass the normal account creation limit of six accounts per day, and partly because I can bypass the captcha as an admin - I can't use captchas because I'm blind, as it says on my user page. I didn't realise that it would make the logs more confusing - this is probably a bug that needs to be fixed.
Sorry for rambling, and I hope at least some of this made sense. :-) Graham87 00:06, 20 February 2009 (UTC)
  • Well, that does indeed answer my questions. I figured there had to be a logical explanation, I just couldn't figure out what it was. Thanks! Beeblebrox (talk) 00:12, 20 February 2009 (UTC)

Epicanthic fold

Hello,

Sorry for adjusting the Epicanthic fold page just like that. I 'm presenting my arguments in the discussion page of that that topic as of now. I 'm new and it was not my intention to use Wikipedia to make promotion for my side. My idea was to put in a small line, and people could reflect on my site for a more global presentation.

Dror Paley

Dear Graham87

Please do not remove Dr. Dror Paley's link located on Distraction osteogenesis I have just hyper link to his LIMB LENGTHING INTRODUCTION page of his website. This information was just authred by Dr. Paley.

Dr. Paley in 1986,introduced the Ilizarov method to the US and Canada. Dror Paley, M.D., FRCSC, is the founder and director of the Rubin Institute for Advanced Orthopedics, and the director of the International Center for Limb Lengthening (ICLL) at Sinai Hospital of Baltimore.

Dr Paley authored the Principles of Deformity Correction (Springer Verlag, 2002) an 800-page textbook and holds the Baltimore Limb Deformity Course every year at which Dr. Robert Rozbruch teaches as well.

Any questions please email me at sz@lengthening.us As I write you this email his is attending the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons conference where by the way he will be presenting along with Dr. Robert Rozbruch who's website (limblengthing.com) link was not removed from Distraction osteogenesis.

I am just no very used to the format of Wikipedia as i do not do it every day.... PS sorry for my type O's in my last massage as I was also on the phone with Dr. Dror Paley. He was having a good laugh over the removal of his website link.

Dust Bowl article changes

Hello- If you are interested please see the changes I've made to the Dust Bowl article, here and here.

I also made some changes between these two. They are mostly minor corrections and amendments to my own previous edits, but feel free to review these as well.

Please see the article as it exists now for all around readability before any mass undoing.

I would appreciate any comments. Thanks -Hamamelis (talk) 21:18, 3 March 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for reviewing the Dust Bowl article edit and for your positive comments, despite it not being your principal interest. I appreciate it. And, yes, the reason I asked you to review it was because your name was at the top monitering it. Best wishes- Hamamelis (talk) 03:50, 4 March 2009 (UTC)

Hi Graham87. I'm not sure if you first checked the page history, but with this move you undid a move I made in November. Paul Erik (talk)(contribs) 22:45, 7 March 2009 (UTC)

Hi Paul. Yeah I did notice that ... I just thought that the official name (with the capitals on "The") should have been the article title. Now that you've pointed out the part of the MOS that says "Follow standard English text formatting and capitalization rules even if the trademark owner considers nonstandard formatting "official...", I can understand the reasoning for your move now. I probably should've consulted you first to check these things. Graham87 02:21, 8 March 2009 (UTC)

I'm sorry I reported you as an admin vandal. It looked like you were just making a mess of things. I'm sure there will be no repercussions from my report, but just letting you know just in case someone says something to you (for your sake and my own sake, in case they think I was just being spiteful to you for some reason). It was just that one second you deleted the page, the next minute I see like 5 or 6 deletions and moves, it didn't make any sense and I didn't understand why the revision history would be such a big deal. I had never seen anything like that before. Any, sorry, take care. Belasted (talk) 02:01, 11 March 2009 (UTC)
Oh. I've been to that page before via someone else's talk page, but I I've only ever reported vandals using Twinkle, instead of actually going to that page, so I thought that it just went to some super-secret page only admins could see. Didn't realize that was the same page. Thanks for your understanding. Belasted (talk) 02:53, 11 March 2009 (UTC)

I saw what you did with Talk: Christopher Columbus but I'm not clear how you did it. Could you possibly talk me through it so I know how to do it in the future as it's something I may want to do or be asked to do. Thanks. dougweller (talk) 07:52, 16 March 2009 (UTC)

I found an old archive of Talk:Christopher Columbus (which is now at archive 1), noticed it hadn't been linked from anywhere, and then started digging. It turns out that it used to be linked from the Christopher Columbus talk page, but the link had been removed, along with 135KB of talk page text, in this edit. There was also a second unlinked talk archive. Also complicating the matter of renumbering the archives was that some of the page history was in archives 2 and 4 (now 4 and 6), thus if I renumbered them, the page history trail could become very difficult to follow.
First, I merged the page historie so all the content edits could be at Talk:Christopher Columbus. I moved Talk:Christopher Columbus to Talk:Christopher Columbus/Archive 4, which is where the first batch of history was located. I then merged all the content edits from archive 4 (all those before it was archived). I then moved it to archive 2, suppressing the redirect, then merged all the content edits from archive 2. All the content edits were then in the one place, so I moved everything back to Talk:Christopher Columbus, suppressing the redirect.
Then I renumbered the archives. All archive numbers from 1 to 5 had to be changed to be from 3 to 7. I undeleted all the edits at Talk:Christopher Columbus/Archive 4 and moved them to Talk:Christopher Columbus/Archive 6, with the redirect suppressed. Then I undeleted the old edits from archive 2 and moved them to archive 4, also with the redirect suppressed. After that, I moved the remaining numbered archives, all with redirects suppressed: archive 5 moved to 7, archive 3 moved to 5, then archive 1 moved to 3. I then moved Talk:Christopher Columbus/Archived talk to archive 1 and Talk:Christopher Columbus/Archived talk 2 to archive 2, this time leaving redirects from the old titles, since they are historically significant and are linked from other pages.
I've done archive renumbering before, like at Talk:Al-Qaeda. The principle of renumbering talk archives is to start by moving the highest archive number first, and to always suppress redirects, to make the page moves go more smoothly (everything is in the move log, so there are no problems with the GFDL). I've never done a combination of talk page archive renumbering and history merging before the Columbus incident, and, to be frank, I hope I never have to do a similar operation again. Thanks. So I use the instructions at WP:Historymerge, right? I'm not clear about suppressing redirect. dougweller (talk) 10:08, 16 March 2009 (UTC)
Yes, use the history merge instructions. To suppress a redirect, uncheck the box that says "Leave a redirect behind". Graham87 12:17, 16 March 2009 (UTC)

I have nominated Refactoring as the essential Wikipedia process (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views) for discussion. Your opinions on the matter are welcome; please participate in the discussion by adding your comments at the discussion page. Thank you. JulesH (talk) 15:50, 26 March 2009 (UTC)

Links to legacy.com

Thanks for letting me know. I apologize for any misunderstanding I had.

I wanted to mention that the AP obit link for the Miriam Makeba page, listed as reference #9, is actually a dead link. The New York Times and other newspapers use these third party links as enduring archive links, which is why I have been using them too. However, I understand the policies and reasoning you are citing.

If you want to use the NY Times' archived version of the AP Obit, it's relocated at the third party source of: http://www.legacy.com/NYTimes/DeathNotices.asp?page=lifestory&personid=120022310

This article that continues to be on the Times' site proper, may also be of use: http://www.nytimes.com/2008/11/11/world/africa/11makeba.html

Toggling

Hi Graham87, I hope maybe you have a moment to comment here? Thanks.Ferrylodge (talk) 02:14, 29 March 2009 (UTC)

User:Hopiakuta

You handled this before Wikipedia:Administrators'_noticeboard#User:Hopiakuta, any suggestions? I've very near to blocking him for continued disruption. MBisanz talk 04:21, 30 March 2009 (UTC)

I have no objections to that, to be honest. Multiple people have tried to deal with him for a very, very long time, with no improvements. But the result of the AN discussion was to let him be, so ... meh. Graham87 05:24, 30 March 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for your interest and action; I didn't even notice that the user page had been deleted! —Toby Bartels (talk) 06:02, 31 March 2009 (UTC)

No worries - I love checking out old pages and history like that, and I try to preserve as much of the old history as I can. Graham87 06:06, 31 March 2009 (UTC)
