Re: Quick translation request

Done and done. --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| talk 16:05, 4 May 2010 (UTC)

What is the point?

Why did you do an import of an old, short version of Antoine Lavoisier dated 15 October 2001 from some "Nostalgia" website, replacing the article with an old and inferior version, do some moves (renaming), then leave the article the same as before the exercise? Why not just leave the article alone? How is the project improved by changing it to an old inferior version then changing it back to the version you started with? Were the September and October 2001 edits missing from the history when you started? Thanks. Edison (talk) 03:51, 8 May 2010 (UTC)

In the edit history, when I page back previous edit to previous edit, I come to this one [1] right before your 21:37 edit. I will accept your statement that the article never looked like that during the process of restoring the very early edits. Thanks. Edison (talk) 04:15, 8 May 2010 (UTC)

Thanks for the infobox feedback

It was good to have someone chime in with screen reader experience. Thanks! -Rsl12 (talk) 18:56, 10 May 2010 (UTC)

If you have a moment, I am trying to figure out why the table of contents is not appearing on this talk page. There are more than enough entries for there to be one, so I figure it must be some arcane technical problem which I cannot figure out. It's not anything of great import, obviously, simply something that is bugging me. If you can provide an answer, I would appreciate it. Cheers! ---RepublicanJacobiteThe'FortyFive' 03:10, 16 May 2010 (UTC)

No inconvenience at all. I appreciate your response. I will probably get back to it tomorrow, since, as the song says, "the hour's getting late." ---RepublicanJacobiteThe'FortyFive' 03:32, 16 May 2010 (UTC)
Interesting... yes, I see the connection. Though, I am buggered if I know what to do about it. You? ---RepublicanJacobiteThe'FortyFive' 03:35, 16 May 2010 (UTC)

Image captions and screen readers

Hi Graham. I'm es:User:emijrp from Spanish Wikipedia and I would like to talk with you about images and accesibility. Have you found issues while reading articles with images without captions? Two links to the same article Klaus Knopper: no caption image and image with caption. If this is a problem for visual impairment people, we can try to create a wikiproject to insert captions in all images. Thanks and regards. emijrp (talk) 14:02, 16 May 2010 (UTC)

Spawn (biology)

Well I guess this a minor issue, but what is it with the line breaks on Spawn (biology)? I included line breaks because without them the items on the list of types run into each other and look cramped. You have removed them with a reference to screen readers. Why can screen readers not handle the line breaks properly? Surely if they don't, then they need to be recoded more intelligently. And even if screen readers are untidy on this point, why should that take priority, leaving the article untidy to look at for the much larger number of visually able readers? I agree absolutely that the visually disabled need to be catered for (I am considerably visually disabled myself). But I don't see why a small inconvenience to the visually disabled should be replaced with a small inconvenience to the visually able, given that there are presumably something like 100 visually able users for every visually disabled user. --Epipelagic (talk) 06:25, 18 May 2010 (UTC)

Question

Hi,

I've been notified that you have done some renaming with Radar and MediaTalk. I followed your explanation link but I'm afraid I don't really understand what you are doing and why you need to be doing renaming to update an 2001 archive version. Graham,

It may or may not pique your interest to know that this user has edited his Talk page User talk:JohnTBoy 498 times since you banned him indefinitely on 2 August 2008. I found it because he created a DEFAULTSORT conflict.

This may indicate a problem with the system.

Edit Notices

Hi! I've been working on The White Stripes for a while now and am continually having to revert an edit that is made by different people every few days. There's been some confusion over whether or not the two members are siblings or were once married. Proof has been given to show that they were once married but regardless, the edit continues to be made. I ran across edit notices and I'd like to make one for this page that just basically says something along the lines of "If you came here to change "ex-wife" to sister, please see this discussion" or "please see this divorce certificate". I noticed you created at least one for the sandbox and thought you might be able to help me. My first attempt failed. Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated. OlYellerTalktome 08:18, 5 June 2010 (UTC)

Much thanks. OlYellerTalktome 08:26, 5 June 2010 (UTC)
You're welcome. I'm not an expert in the editnotices system, but I just followed the link entitled "page notice" from the edit window at The White Stripes. I'm not sure if non-admins get that link. However, I don't think the link to a user's talk page is appropriate, and I would suggest just using Template:Editnotice as is done at the one at the George W. Bush article. Graham87 08:29, 5 June 2010 (UTC)
Right after I left you that message I found the how-to but then immediately read that non-admins can't make or change edit notices. I agree that the template at GWB would be better. I went ahead and tailored it for this case and put up an edit request on the talk page. Thanks again for the help. OlYellerTalktome 08:51, 5 June 2010 (UTC)

Hello

Hi Graham. Apologies for the delay in replying to your message, I've been away for a few weeks so haven't had a chence to get online. Thanks for your comments about the articles. I'm glad you found them useful. By chance I happened to see a demo of the Mountbatten at my local library a couple of years ago and it looked like a smart piece of kit. The guy had it rigged up to a printer and was showing the various features it had. I've only just realised that I probably should have mentioned the brailler in the Louis Mountbatten article as it doesn't currently link to it. I'll put it on my list of things to do. Talking of RNC, I know someone who was there about 20 years ago who helped me with some of the information - mostly giving me a bit of background detail and advising which terms to Google for. I'm hoping to get the RNC article up to FA standard and plan to nominate it again in a couple of weeks. But I think there's possibly one or two more things I need to do before that. If you know anyone who can help that would be great. Cheers Paul Largo (talk) 18:42, 11 June 2010 (UTC)

Jean-Pierre Rampal

You do know his occupation is marked as "flautist" in his info box, correct? Perhaps you should hunt down the person who edited that into the page. And when you tell me that I should respect other people's customs of the English language, you are being a hypocrite by demolishing my own understanding. "Flautist" is etymologically the first English word for players of the flute, and the root does come from the Italian flauto. Even wikipedia uses "flautist" as the de facto term. This article could have been deleted as an expired PROD, but in view of its long history and number of contributors, and the fact that there are corresponding articles on a number of other Wikipedias, I have taken it to AfD to get more opinions. I am notifying you because you have contributed to the article. Your views are welcome at WP:Articles for deletion/Corporatocracy. Regards, JohnCD (talk) 13:49, 20 June 2010 (UTC)

Help re: transwiki

Hi Graham! I know that you're very familiar with the Transwiki process and "interwikification" or whatever, so I'd like to ask if you could take a look at the edit I made to the meta:Help:Transwiki page, [4] and verify that it's correct or revise it if need be. In fact, that whole page may need revising because I'm not sure if that process is still in use or if it's all automated now by the Import feature and automatically logged as well. But i'm unsure, anyways, you would know better than I so I just wanted to bring it to your attention. Regards, œ 14:02, 22 June 2010 (UTC)

Hi OE, That edit sounds good to me. The page probably needs an update, but it's still historically relevant and is probably still used by wikis which don't have the import feature enabled. Graham87 14:08, 22 June 2010 (UTC)
Great, thanks. -- œ 15:13, 22 June 2010 (UTC)

Only the Lonely (film) and Transwiki-ing -- Quick Question

Hi, there. I was at Only the Lonely (film) and noticed the quote section has been marked as due for transwiki to Wikiquote since 10/2007. I thought I'd try my hand at doing it, but I'm not entirely sure whether it's something a normal user can do without admin access. I looked at the import log and noticed you did some recent transwiki-ing; thought I'd ask you. Is it something I can do, or do I need to let an admin know? WCityMike 22:07, 23 June 2010 (UTC)

Hello, I think you can just copy the text to Wikiquote, noting where it came from in the edit summary. Since you're not copying the whole article, just a specific section of it, a full history import would be wasteful. Graham87 00:20, 24 June 2010 (UTC)
They don't have an existing article for the film. When I create it, should I create it there as "Transwiki:Only the Lonely (film)" so that they can decide whether they want it? Or just go ahead and create an article? WCityMike 01:03, 24 June 2010 (UTC)
Just go ahead and create it. The film has a Wikipedia article, so it should be notable by their standards as well. Graham87 01:07, 24 June 2010 (UTC)
I'm obliged for your advice. All done now. Thanks! WCityMike 02:17, 24 June 2010 (UTC)

Speedy deletion of English language/talk

A tag has been placed on English language/talk, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a redirect to an article talk page, image description page, image talk page, mediawiki page, mediawiki talk page, category talk page, portal talk page, template talk page, help talk, user page, user talk or special page from the main/article space.

If you can fix the redirect to point to a mainspace page, please do so and remove the speedy deletion tag. However, please do not remove the speedy deletion tag unless you are fixing the redirect. If you think the redirect should be retained as is for some reason, you can request that administrators wait a while before deleting it. To do this, affix the template {{hangon}} to the page and state your reasoning on the article's talk page. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this. Histmerge help

Can you please check out whether I did things right here? Thanks, Waldir talk 13:03, 5 July 2010 (UTC)

I'd prefer if you undid it this time, I'll watch and learn :) --Waldir talk 14:00, 5 July 2010 (UTC)
Thanks! I think I got it. here's my take. Fortunately these were the only two history merges I've performed so far :) (now that I look at it again, I actually switched the page histories, but since both are available now, I guess it is not worth the effort to "deswitch" them).
By the way, while this is only tangentially related, I thought I'd ask you: is it acceptable for an admin to restore a page that was deleted in AfD? I would like to restore this version of the Pedobear article. My rationale can be found here. --Waldir talk 14:56, 5 July 2010 (UTC)
Oh, that link should be easier to find. I'll see what I can do about that. Thanks for the pointer, but I was also looking into actually restoring the text, instead of having that page as a redirect (with a few additions, such as the image, interwikis and some content I found elsewhere). I think it should be fine even if I'm the same editor who restored the history, but since the topic of that article (an internet meme, and one related to pedophilia) can be a little controversial, I wanted to double-check with another admin before acting. Actually, now that I think of it, what about if you restore the history and I put the text back later? That way there won't be any pseudo-COI. --Waldir talk 15:16, 5 July 2010 (UTC)
Done, check it out :) --Waldir talk 18:38, 6 July 2010 (UTC)
Well, the new, improved version was coming anyway :) But actually, I was curious to know whether there being a good version of the article before it got progressively worse and then deleted (which is the case), would it be acceptable to restore the edits and revert back to that version? Technically that version never got contested, so it feels right to me. I guess this is one of those BOLD/IAR occasions, huh? Oh, and thanks for spotting those errors :D --Waldir talk 05:52, 7 July 2010 (UTC)

Bocce apologies & request

Hi Graham87, please consider leaving Bocce &/or Category:Lawn games in garden features, and a few other articles if acceptable, so landscape designers will know how to properly design and install the courts. In general, some articles need a cross reference of categories, even though the primary article focus-intention is weighted to one of them.

Sorry for the over-categorizing with tags though; the articles are excellent ! and I "just wanted" other readers to find them too. There was a NPR-U.S. radio story on the topic today that got me going. Again, apologies, and Thanks----Look2See1 t a l k → 04:25, 22 July 2010 (UTC)

Hi Graham87, exclusivity and bent suits was never my intent; for some of us any encyclopedia is a starting point - for anyone to use- for any topic. It can introduce broad subjects-specific topics-nomenclature terms-events-etc previously unknown to the reader; and so initiate research using other in depth resources. Your view is narrower and you are entitled to it; however, regretfully now readers will miss some good articles by you and other editors .----Look2See1 t a l k → 07:52, 22 July 2010 (UTC)

lang attribute

In the context of the transliteration template, I'm wondering if the lang attribute on a span does anything for the accessibility. There is a problem with using the lang attribute on transliterated text, because Firefox then chooses a different font, because it is expecting a different script to be used in the span. See also this discussion. —TheDJ (talkcontribs) 14:50, 31 July 2010 (UTC)

Improving structure of data tables

Hi Graham87. :-) I've improved several guidelines and help pages about data tables accessibility recently. Currently, most data tables indicate which cells are headers, and it's good. And it can be improved by indicating which headers are row headers and which headers are column headers.

I think your version of JAWS should support the scope attribute for table headers, so I'm very interested to know what you think about it. I've updated a few articles from the featured article candidate category, such as the table in Courageous class battlecruiser#Ships. I also updated the table at the end of Help:Wikitable. And most tables from Help:Table as well, although a few issues remain here and there. I know the scope attribute is most helpful in very large tables, but I could find any that easily. If you know about a very complex data table, please tell me, and I'll do my best to update it.

If you want to learn more about the techniques and guidelines, I suggest the tutorial Creating Accessible Tables, 2) Data Tables, WebAIM techniques. Yours, Dodoïste (talk) 01:30, 3 August 2010 (UTC)

Sounds great! Yes, my version of JAWS supports the scope attribute. I can't think of any complex examples off-hand. Graham87 01:40, 3 August 2010 (UTC)
Thanks for your answer. I'll get back at you if I find a complex example to work on. Yours, Dodoïste (talk) 13:06, 4 August 2010 (UTC)

Hi Graham87. Another editor, Dodidste has informed me that you might be able to help in providing so insight into the new accessibility rules/guidelines. Currently we're discussing the changes at MOS:DISCOG#Accessiblity issues. We've ironed out the issues for discographies but we're struggling with other forms of data table where rowspan= and "colspan= are used within the table's cells. If you have some free time your input would be appreciated. --Lil-unique1 (talk) 01:20, 8 August 2010 (UTC)

Invisible deleted contributions of users with lower case user name

Hi, I've undeleted some 2002 edits of m:user:mirwin (lower case), e.g. m:Market research in progress at meta wikipedia; the strange thing is that his user name is lower case in history, and if you open m:Special:DeletedContributions/Mirwin or m:Special:Contributions/Mirwin you won't find anything. Is this a known bug? (I'm lazy, I don't want to search bugzilla.) Thank you, Nemo 08:52, 14 August 2010 (UTC)

More old histories

There's also m:Disability Etiquette with some November 2001 edits and a Larry_Sanger (with underscore) comment: «The discussion that used to be on this page actually developed into a Wikipedia article! Please see [6]». Actually I don't see any discussion: I don't understand if text was moved from another page or some revisions got lost, or whatever (and I see that you recovered some April 2001 revisions of this page). Anyway, I can give you an xml export if you want. --Nemo 10:46, 14 August 2010 (UTC)

Updates: Thanks to Mauro742, we have:
I've undeleted the page (I definitely had wanted to restore it).
That list was a sandbox created in 2003 and linked from some documentation page, but actually pages created on Meta instead of on Wikipedia and «temporary version of an encyclopedia article» used to be among the most common types of pages deleted on Meta (see m:Delete:_this_page_does_not_belong_on_Meta#Which_pages_are_more_likely_to_be_a_victim_of_deletionists.3F).
On the list: sorry to hear that. Isn't it useful at least to illustrate the bug? If it is, I would suggest to move it to an actual table on some page here on en.wiki, for reference. I'm not a database expert, so can you please explain me why the list doesn't contain those old edits so that I can ask Mauro to change the query? I suppose that he queried the database looking for some value that those revisions lack, or something similar. --Nemo 13:49, 17 August 2010 (UTC)
Re the list, I've copied it here. Actually I don't understand if it includes deleted edits. I've asked Mauro to include edits with rev_user = 0 or NULL, but I don't understand how to exclude hostnames anonymous edits safely (how are they? I've written something in mw:Manual:Revision_table#rev_user_text, but it's far from a complete definition: can you please improve it?), and maybe they should be included: if the anonymous user's hostname has a lower case starting letter, are his contributions visible, or are they affected by this bug, too?
Congrats for your Italian: it's quite good, given that you've studied it only for a year (I studied German for a year and I don't know literally anything)! Yes, fuffa is a funny word; I hadn't read that article before and I didn't know that it's a word typical of my city. --Nemo 11:39, 18 August 2010 (UTC)
So, I suppose that such revisions by hostnames would be interesting? They are a lot, e.g., for me on it.wiki (some important historical users used them). They have access to deleted revisions table, although not to the associated text, so these can be retrieved, too. Thank you for your fix to my edit on mw:.
I didn't know that it's possible to study Italian in Australian primary schools: good! --Nemo 13:43, 18 August 2010 (UTC)
Mauro has generated the lists: they're here (edit and move them as you want). Let me know if they're useful! (Maybe such a query should be done also on Nostalgia's database to recover those revision which have been deleted and remove from the deletion archive?)
I see. The mass-migration to Australia is completely overlooked because it's very small compared to the mass-migration to America, Northern Italy and Germany... --Nemo 13:40, 19 August 2010 (UTC)

San Luis Rio Colorado

Stop vandalizing the San Luis Rio Colorado page!!! —Preceding unsigned comment added by RichardBond (talkcontribs) 01:24, 15 August 2010 (UTC)

This message was moved from User talk:Graham87/Archive 6. Graham87 14:34, 15 August 2010 (UTC)

It turns out that there is a San Luis Río Colorado (municipality) page which had no link from the San Luis Río Colorado page. The page without the accented i should be merged into the properly accented one. —Preceding unsigned comment added by RichardBond (talkcontribs) 06:46, 20 August 2010 (UTC)

RfC on Microformats

Hi Graham. I was wondering if microformats had any effect on the operation of a screen reader, or whether there are any other accessibility issues. Wikipedia:Requests for comment/Microformats may be of interest. OrangeDog (τε) 22:36, 15 August 2010 (UTC)

Re Didgeridoo title

Ok. I see your point Graham...and I don't mind your boldness, as I was equally bold in the first place! It's true, musicology references primarily refer to authentic traditional didgeridoos, and so inherently it should not be necessary to use parentheses if the subject is primarily about traditional didgeridoos. So following that logic it also makes sense to separate the Modern didgeridoo designs into a separate article, because they are not traditional. John Moss (talk) 15:02, 22 August 2010 (UTC)

Fantastic Graham! ...I'm glad that you think that a separate article on Modern didgeridoo designs is a good idea. Unfortunately I got an AfD tag when I was mid-stride in setting up the article on my stub level kick-start...I thought the comments were a bit harsh. I've since transferred what was in the Didgeridoo article section "Modern didgeroo innovations". The article is still a little bit stub like, but I'm doing ok on chasing up reliable citations. Any suggestions/input/constructive collaboration would be most welcome..and especially a comment on the AfD project page, if you are so motivated. Cheers. John Moss (talk) 15:21, 22 August 2010 (UTC)

Thanks

Thanks for doing the history merge of Georgia Tech and Georgia Institute of Technology. I don't remember if I'd requested it or not but I knew it needed to be done :) —Disavian (talk/contribs) 02:26, 24 August 2010 (UTC)

Jim Thorpe

Thanks for the welcome back. One of the main reasons I came back is I read A Confederacy of Dunces recently which I liked and I want to work on that article and John Kennedy Toole as well, I started a little bit but I just have to get some money together to buy a few of the books written on that subject and a Toole autobiography or two.

Yeah, before I left one of the last things I did was work on the Thorpe FAR and help it get saved from delisting. It was in awful shape then too. His page still gets a lot of edits and seems to be one that needs watching to maintain quality. I guess that's a testament to his enduring popularity. I don't think I'll be watching over it as much, as I'm going to try to remove some things from my watchlist so I don't stretch myself too thin this time. I may rework that Legacy section that someone just re-organized though as I'm not sure if like the layout change.

As for Thorpe the person, he definitely has a sad, tragic life story. I really am fascinated by some of these older athletes that if they were alive today would have been megastars and treated so much better. Another article I put some work in on was Sugar Ray Robinson, who is generally recognized as the greatest boxer ever. He didn't have quite the tragic life Thorpe did but he was as excellent in his field and suffered from racism as well and also had a dismal final few years. One of the reasons I was attracted to the Thorpe article in the first place is I noticed it was in FAR and reading I felt compelled to help out since I found his story pretty touching.
