Making Wikipedia accessible to screenreaders

Hey, Graham! Um, I don't know if you'll remember me, we've talked a bit, but, anyway...

I've taken over the Tech report on the Signpost. As you can imagine, not every week has a huge new technical achievement, so I've decided to use tutorials to fill in any days that don't have major tech news to headline with.

So, er, we come to my request. I know you use a screenreader to edit Wikipedia; so, presuming there are things that users should be doing but might not be, would you be willing to write a short report - three to ten paragraphs, say - on making Wikipedia easier to use with screenreaders?

Right. I've copied it to Wikipedia:Wikipedia Signpost/2013-09-04/Technology report, and have written a brief introduction (feel free to edit the introduction as you see fit). One thing that strikes me is that the first two of your suggestions seem like they should be fixable by bots. I wonder how hard it would be to get that done?

No worries about the unarchiving. I could see some issues with the bot, but, at the same time, I suspect it should be largely uncontroversial. In particular, I can see no reason why {{TOCright}} at the start of an article should not be simply removed with a note saying this is for accessibility and consistency reasons. Agreed. It might need a bit of a discussion to get agreement to push forwards, but I think it'll be fine. One other possibility might be to sort out some sort of hidden section header that could be used when the table of contents does need to go before the lead. Digimon

Hello, I've noticed that you indefinitely semi-protected Digimon. However, the article has not seen too much activity in a while, and in fact, for the month of August at least, there were several constructive edits from IPs. Besides, WP:PP states that indefinite semi-protection should only be applied to articles with a continuous level of vandalism. At the moment, I don't think the level of non-constructive editing justifies semi-protection, let alone indefinite. So would it be alright to either: A. shorten the protection to at least 1 month, B. implement pending changes protection, or C. unprotect the article? Thanks and happy editing. @Narutolovehinata5: Thanks, the setting to indefinite was more out of anger (about the obvious vandalism staying for such a long time to such a high-profile article) than logic or policy, and I've changed the expiry date to one month. I didn't want to take up the other solution of me watchlisting the page because I have no knowledge or interest in the subject, therefore I probably wouldn't be the best person to keep an eye on the page. Disruptive IP

Hi Graham, remember 109.154.83.250 (talk · contribs · WHOIS)? They're back as 109.154.90.41 (talk · contribs · WHOIS) and I just blocked them for 72 hours. You blocked that IP for six months, but they seem like regular (voluntary or involuntary) IP hoppers to me. If there's a good reason for a longer block, please adjust. See, I don't know anything about proxies, so I thought maybe that's what was going on. I went through a bunch of articles to see if there were more but didn't find any. Table formatting

Hi Graham,

The following small table comes from Preachers' Daughters#Episodes. There are two copies. Do they both behave the same for you?

Original table:

@Whatamidoing (WMF): That is because in wiki syntax, there is an extra row. |- means "start a new row". In the PHP parser, this row is automatically removed, but parsoid shows it, and then VE becomes confused, because it is not expecting this. Yes, I know what's causing it. The problem is deciding what to do about it. I'd contemplated a one-time fix to proper/minimal formatting, but there are more than 100,000 instances of this needless "start a new row" syntax just in articles, and almost half a million when you add in talk pages and the like. Before I gave up on fixing them all, I wanted to make sure that it wasn't creating problems for screen readers. Asking Graham is the fastest and most reliable way for me to find out whether something makes screen readers behave badly. Since it's not, my recommendation is going to be for VisualEditor to cope with it gracefully, rather than to clean up the mess. If that stray bit of code had screwed up Graham's pages, then naturally I'd be making the opposite recommendation. Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 17:45, 9 September 2013 (UTC)

Thanks for catching that, I had caught it initially and thought it was a weird situation but barring something to make me think different I assumed it was a simple rename. Why Must You Stamp my IP on my Posts?

Graham87, I do not understand why you keep stamping and hyperlinking my IP on my posts. They all clearly bear my signature, yet you say, bewilderingly, that they are unsigned. The reason I substitute letters in my signature, clearly explaining it, is because Kww codes official Wikipedia abuse filters to stop me from signing my username. Yes, unbelievably, no IP editor on Wikipedia may utter my inoffensive username without his or her edit being blocked. As well, as you are well aware, your hyperlinking of my IP is an invitation for the idly curious and the snoops to go and run "Geolocate" and "TraceIP" and the rest of those cyberstalking tools on me. I don't understand why you want to subject me to that. I am asking you to go and undo your own handywork at Jimbo's page currently and in his archive where you did it previously. Hey Graham! I hope you're well. I have a question related to WT:FAC#Non-English text in featured articles. Should I be putting {{lang}} templates around all of the non-English ship names in South American dreadnought race? I.e. things like "Minas Geraes", "Rivadavia", "Almirante Latorre", "Capitan O'Brien", or "Sultân Osmân-ı Evvel". Where's the cutoff here? Thanks! Help with an AfD history merge?

Hi! I'm asking for a little help since you seem to know how to do the history merge stuff. The AfD in question is Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Fluffy bunny (2nd nomination). It basically closed with the article in question getting deleted and the disambiguation page moved to the main page for Fluffy bunny. Pertinent information from the article was merged to the article Etymology of Wicca. One of the users suggested that the histories get merged, but I'm not entirely sure how to do that. I was just going to delete the article in question at fluffy bunny and move the disambiguation page there, but the editor was worried that this would eliminate the history of the page fluffy bunny. I'm not quite sure how to proceed and I'm a little afraid of ruining the histories. For right now I'm going to cut and paste the information from the disambiguation page to the main page for fluffy bunny and just redirect the disambiguation page there so the histories will be intact. Is that the proper way to do things? I'm sort of confused here. I figured that this way would leave both pages intact in case I royally botched stuff up and you need to fix anything. Lyell Highway

is the pits between mount arrowsmith and queenstown, all curves and corners. Then there is road after it between Queenstown and Strahan... My favourite BOM location in western tasmania is Mount Read, Tasmania - I have been very close to but never to the top ( I dont think ) and i think its rain is better than Lake Margaret, Tasmania and Tully, Queensland where rainfall is over a metre a year. unless something has happened since the 1970's. satusuro 08:52, 15 October 2013 (UTC)

The correct place for this request is Wikipedia:Requests for page protection, and I happen to think this is a poor reason for unprotecting a high-traffic page. The course template goes on the article's Talk page, not the article page, as I understand the instruction here, which says: "add the course assignment template at the top of the talk page for each article". Help on the Greek chorus article

Hi Graham,

I just made some major edits to the Greek Chorus article and have thus far only done in text citations. I cannot figure out how to move my references over from my sandbox without deleting the current references that existed before I made my changes. Page importation

Hi Graham. I noticed you were really active on the Requests for page importation page and I thought I would go out on a limb and see if you could help me on the German Wiki here RE if I am doing things properly. It is difficult to navigate a Wiki in another language! I have a COI with Yelp and am trying to get a translated version of the English language article up on the German Wiki following whatever process I should follow per my COI. Hello CorporateM, I've fixed your template there. If I were the admin in this case I would deny your importation request because there is already an existing article with history at that title. Ugh, ok. I didn't really understand what the importation bit was for, but it's where an editor told me to go. The German Wiki I don't think has a COIN board, so I may need to find their Help page again. Google's translation tool seems to be down, so I'll be able to find my way to it when it's working again. I just received

a little note from you regarding List of Icelanders and am wondering how you did that? I don't find it either on my talkpage or on the article talk page. Got my confused. Also, I am a patroller of lists (or so it sometimes seems) and frequently remove red linked names from the and have found "notable" as being a good word to use. Sometimes I get the argument that the red links serve as a sort of future wish list for articles and will occasionally let them go, but mostly I don't. There is a List of medallists (something like that) that I am about to perhaps begin to Slash and burn my way through. I am wondering what your thoughts on the subject is? Input needed on new CheckWiki errors

As you are the expert on accessibility issues, you will be getting a notification to join the discussion at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Check Wikipedia. We are looking to add new error checks. Currently, CheckWiki does look for some accessibility issues. Problems arising in section headers per Wikipedia:Accessibility#Headings are found and are fixed by a bot. I'm currently running the bot, but it was coded up by Scottywong. Finding small text is another example. Header looks good to me. I've never made one, or installed one, so I assume "begin with the letter 'Header'" customizes in place of the word "Header". Anyway, if you install the header in one of the files, then I'd be glad to do the rest, or you can. I would tweak the column headers in each file separately. Unfortunately, the search box does not find anything (e.g. Bach ) in any of the new files, but maybe it takes a few days for the new files to be recognized. Can you delete my old edits?

Hi, first off, I had gotten a name change to User:Blake a while back as the old user was inactive. However, for whatever reason, when the old account was moved, these two edits refused to budge(not sure on the specifics, this was 3 years ago). Because of this, on various statistics pages it looks like I, myself, joined Wikipedia back in 2001. This is incorrect, and I would most like for it to be fixed. The two edits of mention are [1] and [2]. If you could delete these edits, or move them to a ghost account somehow, that would be great.
