I understood that what I did is discouraged, but the deleting admin did not move the associated talk page. It is the article history that is mainly important. Style/screenreader question

Quotation Marks

Hello, Graham. Thanks for the heads up.

Until reading your message today, I had never heard of "logical quotation." For many years, I worked as a proofreader and editor at Loyola University New Orleans (located in New Orleans, Louisiana, in the U.S.) In creating the university's editorial style guide, I researched many editorial style and grammar publications. In doing so, never once did I come across anything other than how it is stated on Loyola's website: "When at the end of a quoted phrase or sentence, commas and periods are included inside quotation marks; colons and semicolons are outside quotation marks." According to our style--and all others I've come across previously--the only punctuation mark used in the "logical quotation" method is the question mark which "is placed inside quotation marks when it punctuates only the material enclosed and not the sentence as a whole. It is placed outside when it punctuates the entire sentence."

As I read a few minutes ago, Wikipedia has been criticized for this practice before by many others far more knowledgeable than I. I have to say in my opinion it is SO wrong. I am appalled that Wikipedia would perpetuate such a grammatically incorrect practice. I feel by doing so, Wiki is undoing what is taught in schools and confusing the many students who use Wikipedia for reference. When they see the incorrect usages on Wikipedia's website, I'm sure it leads them to believe Wiki's usage is correct when it is not.

After so many years editing, I cannot read anything without finding errors. I may not be able to use Wikipedia anymore let alone edit it. Obviously, I have not taken the editing tutorial, but I will now--if only to see what other "logical" editing options Wiki promotes. If there are too many that go against what is correct, I will not edit anymore. I do not want to corrupt what I already know to be correct by having to learn incorrect practices.

I think that logical quotation is more of a British style than American. Certainly, in technical documentation you don't want to write Enter "AUTOSTART." when you mean Enter "AUTOSTART". I suppose that's why they are called "techie quotes" as well. Monado (talk) 06:08, 10 December 2013 (UTC)

Canning Stock Route

Hi Graham87, I wonder if you have read recent edits to the Canning Stock Route in this section Canning Stock Route#Traverses. An unregistered user User talk:Gaynor Schoeman began making edits reporting feats about a person of the same name, Gaynor Schoeman.

All references cited by the editor link to an internet website, and do not meet a reliable source in my view. The last edit placed an image of Gaynor Schoeman claiming to be the first person to walk solo on the CSR.

Ken Martin

Graham87, Thanks for your thank you on the Ken Martin page I edited. I never thought I'd be editing but Ken and I go way back. Although he lives in Indianapolis I just saw him last September and he's still running sub six minute miles after a seven year bout with cancer. He's doing quite well having had a cell transplant that seems to be working and is a tireless advocate to promote research concerning the benefits of exercise while undergoing Chemo. Good luck. A question you asked me

Jimbo, possibly a frivolous question, but is the "not" meant to be there in the sentence "Therefore, this new arrangement is designed to handle only relatively rare issues, and not invite a general approach of majority vote ..."? The sentence is exactly as I meant it, and I don't think it is ambiguous or awkwardly constructed. Perhaps it is just surprising to you? We do not want, have never wanted, and have avoided establishing an idea that policy in Wikipedia should be subject to a simple majority vote. Neither should it be imposed top-down by me or the Foundation. It should, to the maximum extent possible, be consensus-driven. Over time that has led to a practice of requiring 70-80% approval in a vote. This works quite well in most cases. But in other cases it allows for a general failure. Imagine a situation with 3 options. Option A gets 68 percent support and so fails to gain consensus. Option B gets a different 68% support and so fails to gain consensus. Supporters of A and B both agree, let's say, that it is better than the third option which is to do nothing at all. But under our current system which requires 70% support to change things, we are stuck with something that quite possibly 80% of people don't like. It's a flaw in the system.
There are other cases in which something is really important, the majority of editors want to see a change, but they are repeatedly frustrated by a minority who are unwilling to work to find a compromise that will gain consensus, perhaps because their interests are best served by having a flaw in Wikipedia's rules.
It is in these kinds of rare cases where we should have a means of making changes that require majority support, and a process for determining when this process kicks in. In the future we may find a way to do that without inviting endless majority vote polls. But for now, I want to see if we can try it as a means to break some perennial logjams in policy. I'll be looking for proposals that I think are very close to having consensus, and which ideally have expiration dates, i.e. pilot projects and tests. I'd like to see us be more bold in changing policy to help with editor happiness, but we need to do so in ways that don't get us into even worse corner solutions!--Jimbo Wales (talk) 11:34, 23 December 2013 (UTC)

Graham: thanks for the tidy up and tidbits on What's Inside - interesting quotes, I didn't know about the Brian Redhead thing. Much appreciated. And yes, I agree, the album is a top one - it's one of my favourites along with Secret Secrets and 'Joan Armatrading'. "In Your Eyes" is a great song and "Trouble" is very touching. I read in the Mayes biography JA really looked up to her mother, she saw her as a fighter, a rock that kept the family together, and she wanted to be like her. I'll press on when I can with more articles on the albums, it'd be good to cover most or all of them - JA should have that coverage, it's the least we can all do. Thanks again. Edit to Bach (cantata)

You changed the name of the cantata mentioned at the end of the Köthen section to "Hunt cantata", but I can't find any backup for this name. The original title doesn't say anything about hunting, and the WP entry for the cantata doesn't mention this name. I think if you can justify the name it would be a good idea to add it to the cantata article too.

Can you help me with something else? I spotted a typo in the same section, and started looking at the Spaeth reference. Hmm. It says just Spaeth (2005), then you look through the bibliography, and there's a book by Sigmund Spaeth (2006), but then the ISBN doesn't seem to work, and anyway Spaeth died in 1965. Is there a standard for citing out of print books that have been reprinted? Seems very misleading to put a reprint date, rather than the date of original publication. I find more problems in creating/amending references than anything else, and I never know quite where to go to ask for help, so suggestions much appreciated.

Guadalajara Climate

I had to revert your edits on the Guadalajara article because you removed the sunshine data (called "insolacion" in the source), an important parameter in many city articles on Wikipedia and because most Mexican cities use the 1951-2010 data (the link to the 1971-2000 one is a dead link). My edits are not suspicious, I try to make sure that it is verifiable and is the same as the source (unless the data looks dubious). The edit by MT173 may have been suspicious and you may have mistaken all of the edits after it for this user but the 1951-2010 data, sunshine values and humidity were added by me. Idea for the blind

I invented an idea for the blind. A matrix of light distance meter devices & a pin matrix device to feel the image produced. Should be able to feel a cup handle & feel a doorway. I am trying to get some reviewers for Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/Australia women's national wheelchair basketball team at the 2012 Summer Paralympics/archive2. TOC question.

On my talk page, there is a short discussion about the article List of municipalities in Alberta. The article contains two TOC. One is right in the middle of the lede, clearly a violation. The other is at the start of the "List of urban municipalities" section. Questions:

  1. Is the second TOC ok?
  2. In a discussion on the article's talk page, they do bring up the TOC should follow the lede. The wording in MOS says "most cases" and use this to ignore MOS. I've always thought accessibility issues trump everything unless it is going to break something or is unfeasible to implement. Can TOC MOS be ignored like this? Is my assumption correct? Wikipedia:Requests for page importation

Hello Graham87, I don't know if you already know the following pages, but maybe they can help you with importing pages to en.wiki:

  • User:Brackenheim/monobook.js: If you copy this text into your monobook.js (or commons.js etc.) you just have to click on "export" above every page to export all versions, even if they are more than one thousand. Unfortunately you have to create such a monobook.js on every wiki, where you want to export articles.
  • With importScriptURI("//de.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=MediaWiki:Gadget-revisionCounter.js&action=raw&ctype=text/javascript"); in your monobook.js you get the numer of versions of every page, so that you can check if all versions are imported. Only sometimes it doesn't work properly.

Hi. I see that last year you blocked this user. Quite a few people have left him messages on his talk page. I get the feeling that the user is not even aware of the existence of the talk page. What are ways are there to engage in dialogue with him to bring him in? He probably monitors his edits because he once reverted a revert. Hey Graham can you look at my edits and tell me if any of them need reverted. I fixed some lists but not quite sure they needed fixed. I am also wondering if you and I can look at some grammer issues I have found when I get home from school. New template for old talk pages on redirects

Hi Graham! As a wikiarcheologist, you may be interested in a template I've just created - {{Old talk on redirect}}. It's for labeling inactive talk pages attached to titles that are now redirects. It uses Lua magic to advise the reader of the talk page associated with the redirect target.

Common Words

Hello! I noticed that you said that I shouldn't be adding links to common words. Well, I understand how they would be obvious to someone who has graduated high school, but what if they haven't? The reason I add them is to make sure that someone who doesn't understand something like CSS, or HTML can have quick access to the information. I wont track my video game progress anymore, too.
