How to Win Friends

Thanks for your note about How to Win Friends and Influence People, I did actually intend to remove the caption but I should have noted as much in the edit summary. Infobox image captions that simply repeat the name of the article (which is already in the name parameter) or, as in this case, are generic (with no indication of date, edition etc.) are unnecessary. The reader of an article about a book knows that the image with the title written on it is the cover of the book. It's more useful/helpful to designate "US first edition" or "1975 paperback edition" if that information is available. It's the same thing for a biographical article, there is no value in captioning an infobox image simply "Elvis Presley", the caption should include a date and/or other context. @Dirtlawyer1: I've gone and copyedited it, and Australianised it a bit where I can. I may not be the best person to evaluate the spelling, however, as I can't tell the difference easily with my screen reader. I see you have removed content from here: Strongyloides stercoralis with the justification that it should be about the worm, not the disease. @EvM-Susana: A little bit ... the neglected disease bit is definitely at the Strongyloidiasis article, at any rate. The text also needed significant work, and I don't know anything about the subject – I just have the article on my watchlist in case of vandalism. I don't do translation imports without a request from the person involved in the article, because a lot of people don't like them; they can be quite time-consuming and fiddly. @Gerda Arendt: Unfortunately, I don't do history merges of articles that don't involve cut-and-paste moves *unless* (a) I'm trying to save deleted edits and (b) there are *absolutely no* overlapping edits in the two histories. Neither of these conditions are the case here. I also like to keep article history associated with talk page history ... we'd have to break this in some way if the histories were merged. Furthermore, I don't like falsifying page histories if I can help it ... how would a machine reading the merged histories know that the two cantata lists used to be completely separate articles? Graham, I need your assistance to review several test cases, using your screen reader. A question has arisen regarding the readability/parsing of the section headers of a particular infobox template, specifically the first section headers of the following examples:

  1. Carlos Alvarez (American football);
  2. Jay Berwanger; and
  3. Bobby Grayson.

Graham, the issue at hand is not about color. There is a separate issue regarding the visual recognition of the links as distinguished from the surrounding text and background colors; however, that's not what I need you to look at. A question has been raised regarding the ability of screen readers to parse the text in the infobox section headers, given the way the templates are structured. I want to understand how your screen reader parses the first section headers of each example, to see if the screen reader "reads" the section header text in (a) an intelligible manner, and (b) in the same manner that it displays. Colombian exchange

Hello Thank you for helping to maintain the colombian exchange article. I have removed the quotes from the first article. They had been removed previously and you put them back claiming the initial passage was quoted verbatim. I downloaded the source file and cross checked it. It is close but also very different. definitely not verbatim. there may be some other way to quote that allowing for all the changes but I think it is different enough. let me know if you disagree.

Here is the quote from the journal article: "The Columbian Exchange refers to the exchange of diseases, ideas, food crops, and populations between the New World and the Old World following the voyage to the Americas by Christopher Columbus in 1492."

Here is the Wikipedia article as it stands: "The Columbian Exchange or Grand Exchange refers to the widespread transfer of animals, plants, culture, human populations, communicable diseases, technology and ideas between the American and Afro-Eurasian hemispheres in the 15th and 16th centuries, related to European colonization and trade (including African/American slave trade) after Christopher Columbus' 1492 voyage."

I notice that you frequently update Wikipedia:List of resysopped users and wondered if you had any interest in updating Wikipedia:Desysoppings by month since you seem to find your way to the Bureaucrats' Noticeboard more than most editors do. Scott use to maintain this listing but he is not active any longer. I was reading on Wikipedia talk:RFA how some editors were interested in admin stats so it would be nice to have a list like this up-to-date, like User:WereSpielChequers/RFA by month. Liz Read! Reversion of external links additions

Hi Graham,

Thanks for outlining your reversions. I completely agree regarding the problems with linking to the disclaimer page of the AUSTLANG site, rather than to the more specific information on the site that is relevant to the article in question. And also your suggestion that I use the infobox template for providing this link. It already is in use in some articles (see Kalkatungu language as an example) so I could easily take this approach across all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander language articles, so they are consistent. As you can see from this example, it is also possible to create a link directly to a language record in AUSTLANG.

I did also want to sound out my reasoning for linking to the Aboriginal Australia map in articles, to see what you think.

The Aboriginal Australia map that AIATSIS produces is based on years of research into Australian Aboriginal language groups and is a visualisation of the areas in which these languages were (and in some cases still are) spoken. The functionality provided in the link I was using allows the user to magnify in on a particular area and see the region/s particular languages were spoken, which visually expands on the mapping provided in the wikipedia article itself. The value of the map is also in the reliability of the source.

My assessment of its value is based on the fact that while AIATSIS is not necessarily an "Official Link" in this context, AIATSIS is a peak body in the field of research into Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander studies, has an extensive Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander languages collection that is registered in the UNESCO Memory of the World register and is the government organisation charged with not only researching Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures but educating the public. The map is also the map used across a number of websites and publications (including Australian school textbooks) as a reliable source of information.

It can't be reproduced in the article due to copyright restrictions, but I think provides an important context for the information presented in language articles. I am limiting this to language articles, as it is probably too much of a stretch to argue for linking to it outside of that subject area.

My suggestion would be that I limit any addition of a link to the map to articles specifically about language groups ONLY and not anything related to language conventions, or Aboriginal words etc as I previously had been doing. I'm also not sure if using the infobox template would work in this context, as the ability to provide a few words of context in an external link entry might help.

I would definitely appreciate thoughts/ feedback.

Hi Graham, sorry I think there was a disconnect between what I was talking about and what you were talking about. When talking about Aboriginal languages, the term often used is "language group" as language is a method of defining a group of people in a certain area, speaking a certain language. This is what I was talking about when I suggested only putting the link on articles relating to language groups that are represented on the map. I've put my argument to Kwami as to why I think there are instances where it is relevant, so if there's consensus I'll continue in those cases.

Reverting edits seems very petty and childish without discussing it first. Not all of my edits had to be removed. Please discuss your opinions first in the future. Talk:Satanic ritual abuse

Hello Graham,

I turn to you, as there is a great problem with the article on satanic ritual abuse. Ritual Abuse is a real phenomenon, there are special police agencies and justice departments dealing with this problem alls over the world in various countries. However this article makes it look as if every ritual abuse ever reported was "false memory". There were cases of people being convicted for crimes related to ritual abuse. Those need to be listed to enhance the credibility. Moreover the the side that gives credit to victims (psychologists dealing with victims, crime agencies specialized on those types of crimes, support organisations, need to be cited)

The talk page of the article is terrible! I don't know how anyone can let it be like that. It basically is saying "You better not try editing this article in any way shape or form that indicates that any allegation of ritual abuse ever made was credible, other people have tried before and failed, you'll fail, too." This goes against the guidelines of wp of having views fairly represented on a topic.

Therefore my conclusion to the problem would be to create a new article called "riual abuse" as opposed to satanic ritual abuse because ritual abuse takes place regardless of the affeliation of the perpetrators to any organisation/ religion or sect. Though some say that it occures in some groupes that call themselves satanic, it is terrible for satanists in general to have it seem like it is a satanist problem. Ritual abuse takes place in all kinds of context. There should be an article only describing the ritual abuse aside from the "moral panic"…. which I'm not even sure what that means. It's scary.

Look, once that article goes online, I'll probably get backlash for trying to publish it, as I got from (semi) successfully editing the German version. It needs to be linked appropriately to the versions in other language wp, as for example the German article at least to 50-75 % describes the real crimes and contexts but is linked to the english article describing the moral panic.

So first of all I want you and other administrators to look at the side for sra and look closely at who is editing it, who is attacking people trying to change it and wether there is any chance to block or ban someone. Secondly after really doing thorough research and creating an article in the user space / sandbox and will need help with publishing it, not having it edited to the point where it is completely destroyed and also not having is deleted and linked appropriately to the other versions.

That would be it. I will probably need some time until I have enough material to write and appropriate article that will stand high scrutiny. And I'll get back to you when I do.
