History on Carbon

Hi, I noticed you do a lot of work with old article history (saw you on Iritalk restoring some old revisions on Talk:Christianity/Archive 1). I'm curious if you could explain - and maybe import - the old history on the article Carbon. Particularly, I'm curious why currently, the "oldest" revision shows an IP removing −60,694 characters. Is this just the first edit that happened to get saved, or something else?

Sorry if this was worded confusingly. I'm just kinda interested in the oldest revisions of significant pages, and you seem like someone who can help with that. Thank you! Elli (talk | contribs) 22:05, 12 May 2021 (UTC)

@Elli: I've gone and imported the very oldest edits to the carbon page, because the earliest one before my latest import was also in the August 2001 database dump (which contains all the oldest edits), so the import created a complete record of history. The import process is however fiddly due to idiosyncrasies in the Wikipedia databases and any mistakes can be challenging/impossible to reverse, so I'm relatively reluctant to do these imports. As for the weird byte difference in the carbon page history, that's because of an earlier import I made from the Nostalgia Wikipedia back in 2010; the byte difference given is between the edit I imported and the edit made before the import operation. T114806 was the relevant bug; the importing code was fixed in 2015 but not retroactively as can be seen at T38976. Graham87 06:27, 13 May 2021 (UTC)

@Gerda Arendt: Nice. Yeah I did notice that it was written by a new user but didn't look in to who they were ... nice to know it was a student project. I've had a go at the translation, using Wiktionary, trying to make the English idiomatic for musical directions. I assumed the constant use of "Achtel", "Viertel", and "Halbe" refers to note values. Thank you so much! Yes, note values, and in those cases, the adjective describes them, - you had it right (without comma) once, and I hope I fixed the others. The most difficult one is "lebhaft", - lively is so close, but I also found sprightly, bouncing, - "lively" is rather "munter" (cheerful), but I think still the best to be used so often, - seems to lack a bit of energy, but that may be just me. Hi Graham,

I'm an old guy and total newbie to Wikipedia, so I have no idea what I'm doing. Please bear with me.

Today you imported a German article "Tynset (Roman)" for me. I expected to find it under "User:MunichMic/Tynset (novel)" but I can only find "User:User:MunichMic/Tynset (novel)". It then can't find a user named User:MunichMic. What am I doing wrong?

Soghomon Tehlirian's article: reference editing

Hi, Graham87! I tried answering you at my page about the change I've made at Soghomon Tehlirian's article. Since I'm not really sure if I did it correclty, I'm going to reproduce it here, ok? I've noticed that the Tessa Hofmann's reference seemed to have some kind of editing error. While the others followed Wikipedia's reference pattern this one was inserted directly at the text, something that made that paragraph rather confusing. Since it even had "</ref>" appearing at the end of the phrase, it was clear to me that this reference wasn't inserted the way the article's author intended. I don't have much experience with the English Wikipedia though, for I almost exclusively edit Portuguese Wikipedia's articles. Since it has a different editing engine, I had some trouble trying to adjust that reference. By the way, I've noticed you do a very nice job here at Wikipedia! Keep up the good work, mate! Hey Graham, a friend of mine was using her work laptop to do a little editing on an early lunch break. She noticed that the IP she normally used is blocked. She asked me to take a look and I noticed it's for the entirety of Baton Rouge. I don't see any vandalism for the IP range. I'm just curious why the block. @Neutralhomer: There's a weird vandal on that range who's spent years trying to replace sections entitled "Notable people" with "Notable person", etc. ... when there's just one entry, contrary to the norms here ... an that's literally all they do. A request for help relating to an unblock request at UTRS

Hi, Graham. I wonder if you can help me. I've been looking into an unblock request at UTRS from an editor you blocked. The blocked account is ThesePicklesLoveSosa, and you gave the block reason as "Block evasion: TowerPizza". Two questions. (1) Can you give me an indication what the evidence is? (By email if it can't be made public.) I have compared the editing of ThesePicklesLoveSosa both with TowerPizza and with other accounts established as being the same person. (TowerPizza is a CheckUser confirmed sockpuppet of TannerGoethals3, who also has numerous other blocked sockpuppets.) I have seen some similarities in editing between ThesePicklesLoveSosa and the others, but not a lot, and I have also seen some striking differences. In fact to me the differences seem more significant than the similarities, but obviously you may know of some strong evidence that I haven't seen, so I should be grateful if you could let me know. (2) You blocked talk page editing and email access. I don't see any obvious talk page abuse, and obviously it is preferable whenever possible for an unblock request to be visible on the user talk page than hidden away at UTRS, so would you be willing to consider restoring talk page access? @Jpgordon: Checking my own contribs at the time, I blocked the range because of how rapidly IP addresses seem to change within it, sometimes measured in minutes (see this page history and the edits from July 2019). It's easy to miss vandalism when IP addresses change like that. Maybe I overreacted ... I've tried an unblock and we'll see what happens. Graham87 01:34, 10 June 2021 (UTC)

Sorry for the incivility. But the standards for music infoboxes override the rule of not linking common words.

As I've been trying to tell you, every song, artist, and album has links in their infobox. Even if concepts like "pop music" constitute common english words. @Piotrus: Yeah, I didn't realise until later that there were quite a few useful edits in there. I did my own check of the first hundred or so edits by the IP ... I wanted to thank you for putting semi-protection onto the Colonialism page. The lists of "colonies" were exploding like mushrooms and lost a lot of meaning. There is this one user who wrote Shining Path as a Soviet protectorate (clarification). I came back to see if it was removed, until I noticed the whole section was deleted. Screen readers and HTML validity

Hello Graham. I'm wondering if you can say anything definitive from your experience as a screen reader user. I'm in a somewhat long-lasting argument about whether Wikipedia pages should be made of valid HTML, one of my arguments being that invalid code (for example <li> elements without a <ul> parent) may cause accessibility problems.

There's a discussion at User talk:Timeshifter#Wikitext is not ..., in which Timeshifter challenges users to look at their User:Timeshifter/Sandbox153 to see, quote: "if their screenreader detects any difference other than the left margin". Thanks very much for wading in, Graham. We had three ever-longer threads going on, one at Timeshifter's talk and two at VP-Tech, but he kept insisting we provide proof of screen reader problems, which I couldn't.

Are you aware of other screen reader users at WP one can ping for input and tests like this? I have a dinky old notebook with Vista and little memory, otherwise I'd get JAWS or something on my machine so I could try some things out myself. June songs

some flowers and music for you, with more thanks for consistent improvements than the little clicks can say - you were around when I created my first article, and we enjoyed new music - the top image is one large marguerite flower, - the cultivated variety does't bloom yet this year because May was unusually cool. Further on, there are landscapes with other flowers, including the wild marguerites, and three images of the other Graham. Wonky history at Weekly Shōnen Jump

Hey Graham87, I'm sending this to you as the main person I know who works with copy-paste moves, since I had to chase this down while investigating the history of a bizarre bit of wikitext, but I'm not sure how to actually handle the whole thing from an attribution standpoint.

The text in Jump (magazine line)#Imprints originally started as a section on Weekly Shōnen Jump, which was moved without attribution to a new article in these edits on January 5, 2008. Subsequently, the "List of items associated with Weekly Shōnen Jump" page was merged and redirected back to "Weekly Shōnen Jump" as the result of an AfD on April 1, 2016, and that text was then split out again in these edits on July 21, 2019.

Hi. There was a person on IRC requesting that 97.120.0.0/16 be unblocked as they wanted to edit. I pointed them towards accounts for creation, but they didn't want to create an account. As you are the blocking admin I thought it best to ask you about the block. Is the block on that range still needed, or do you think that unblocking, or alternatively a smaller range block, is needed? By the IRC user's request and the modification to include ACC ignore by Stwalkerster, it seems like there is a fair amount of good faith editors wanting to edit from this range (and/or create an account) so perhaps this range block is no longer needed? Per their unblock request, can we say with more specificity who they might be a sock of? I admit their editing history shows more fluency with Wikipedia than most new editors, but I think presuming them to be a sock, without any evidence of any other undesirable editing or a likely sockmaster, especially with a minimal, infrequent editing history, is maybe not enough to justify an indef block. Hello, it's been a long time!

Hi there. I moved some content from one of my sandboxes to another user's user space. I was focused on moving the content to the right title and I think I forgot about the implications of moving. After the move, I think it's probably not the best situation to have my sandbox history on the moved page. The pages involved are:

1. User:Dawnseeker2000/Sandbox 3
2. User:Ohconfucius/script/Sources/Request for Change (RFC)

So I'm wondering if you'd be willing to help:

1. restore the content and history to my sandbox and
2. delete all but the current version of the page in Ohconfucius's user space

Re: Franklin Foil

My edit to the Franklin Foil page is not "recentism". Mr. Foil is a politician in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, therefore his vote during a first of its kind in 50 years legislative session, recent though it may be, is relevant. Mr. Foil's vote against SB118 effectively stops that bill in its tracks, so there will be no further updates. As a constituent of Mr. Foil, I believe that his stance on this issue is important for others to know/remember. If they agree with that vote, they may use it as a reason to vote for Mr. Foil. If they disagree with that vote, they may use it as a reason to vote against him. Hi Graham! I am aware you are not well and do not feel like dealing with idiots. I am going to talk anyway. I hope your week gets better C:. And I hope I can learn to be of help and make less work for other editors. While writing this, I noticed you noticed I edited my user page. I thought of it as an edgy way to show people I am different. A snowflake of such culture never seen before on this planet. People call me eccentric. I would echo Edith Sitwell saying I am not and just really alive. Or this is merely the immaturity of a young, idealistic fool. I was aware that nobody does that and had laughs making it, fully aware that it could be annoying, confusing, or disturbing to people who viewed it, especially on a site that does not deal with the silly subjective matters of humanity. I understand the art of stupidity. A dumb person may have ignored your warning and given you an "OK, boomer." But I seriously do not want to be like that. I will check out the Discord server. Alts for "purely decorative images"

Hello, Graham. I wanted to get a perspective from the user of a screenreader. I have read MOS:PDI and am quite confused by the guidance, if I'm honest. At the moment, my user page has File:Elephas maximus (Bandipur).jpg, which would probably have an alt of "Indian elephant bull" if I were to have it in the mainspace. However (as I understand it), because the image isn't being used to demonstrate a point or anything (it's just part of a gallery of images), I'm meant to have a blank alt or at least one that is minimally short, like "photograph". I thought that the point of alts were so that screenreader users would have a roughly similar experience to users of the conventional interface, and so before I read that guidance I had planned to write "proper" alts for the images on my userpage. @Sdrqaz: I for one would use normal alt text (as if they're not decorative images) because it's part of a gallery in userspace, and you aren't including a caption. That part of the guideline is usually used for things like stub icons, etc. Graham87 15:48, 4 August 2021 (UTC)

@Fippe: I did not intend to attack you personally; I just intended to rebuke what I see as the German Wikipedia's unusual interpretation of copyright policy. It's OK, the English Wikipedia has its own eccentricities too, prohibiting usernames that represent an organisation and making almost all user data publicly available probably being among them. We also have a widely cited essay called Wikipedia:Don't template the regulars, for which the German Wikipedia doesn't have a direct equivalent; maybe that's another eccentricity that can be added to the list. @HighInBC: I don't know if this user is a sockpuppet, or if so of whom, but they could be. I normally don't deal with editors adding images for obvious reasons, but in this case, I knew that adding people's signatures to articles could be controversial (I've just discovered the essay Wikipedia:Signatures of living persons), and also [[Amaury had undone many of their earlier edits. DO NOT REVERT the 1992 paralympic games edit!!

This paralympic games were IN BARCELONA, not in Barcelona and Madrid. If you revert the changes, you are vandalising the article with FALSE info.

The 1992 paralympics were held in Madrid for intellectually handicapped atheletes p.10), but the International Paralympic Committee later decided not to recognize those people as olympians ([2]). According to Athlete First: A History of the Paralympic Movement, p. 125-126, the Madrid events occured shortly after the Barcelona events and were part of the same Paralympics. No, it isn't. That supposed (super) obscure Madrid event (the internet info about that is just a private blog entry) was not part of the Official PAralympic games of that year, even if that event really existed. A book published by John Wiley & Sons is hardly an unreliable source, and the same with the australian paralympic committee. Madrid 1992 is mentioned in at least one paralympic sources, including [3]. Other reliable sources are [4] and p.138, p.69 (September 1992 in Madrid. These games were identified as the "mentally handicapped sector" of the Paralympics that were held in Barcelona in September of 1992). Care to present the reliable sources supporting your POV?
