Alt text - concise enough?

Hello, Graham. I see you are active on the alt text project and wondered whether you could check over a few of my recent alt text additions to see whether I am being too wordy. I edit a lot of geographical articles, and have been adding alt text, so there are plenty of images of castles, rivers and other features to describe, hopefully helpful to readers who cannot see the images! Phew

So, all of the ones that I just blocked were operating from one single IP. User:M61 Rocks is undoubtedly the same person, operating from an IPv6 /64 that another admin has already blocked, and I did not see any other named accounts on there. (My guess is that that range is for when they're running around town without logging in, except for that one time.) I don't know if it's worth filing an SPI, but they sure are a nuisance. LTA question

Hi Graham87 -- I have a question about this user (it's one person) who you blocked for three years. It's an LTA and certainly behaves like one. The issue is that he's active on Wikiquote and doing a fair amount of damage pushing anti-vax, conspiracy, and racist rubbish. Which LTA is it? Is it someone banned by the Foundation? I'm not an admin on Wikiquote, but trying to clean up some of the worst awfulness there. Thanks -- Antandrus (talk) 03:02, 14 June 2022 (UTC)

@Antandrus: I don't think this user has a name or case as such ... but they've certainly been extremely persistent for at least two years, maybe more, and that's what I was trying to reflect in my block log entry. Thanks for cleaning up afther them on Wikiquote ... I did notice they'd done a lot of editing there but by then I was completely drained from dealing with them here, and the edits I'd noticed from them there weren't *that* bad (but I didn't check too many of them). Oh I just noticed this ANI discussion about them ... seems they've been disrupting Wikiquote for a long time too. Graham87 03:34, 14 June 2022 (UTC)

This person has been flooding the site with racist and anti-vax rubbish for years, and it just seems like no one there cares. Or none of the regulars, anyway. Maybe that laissez-faire attitude is just the way that site works? It's kind of draining, as you say. Re that user,"fighting a cockroach infestation with a toothpick" is right, even with admin tools, just because of how prolific they are ... what's so weird to me is that Melbourne, Victoria is one of the last places I'd *ever* expect to find an editor like that. @Liz: Well the import was requested by Lantus (I had to look for it manually because the search feature didn't work there for some reason),

but if you search the deleted page history for phrases like "Moved" and "Created page", you'll find it was created on enwiki and in the userspace of Sradasilva. Graham87 06:55, 5 July 2022 (UTC)

Breton wiki

Hello Graham87, I write about the changes you made in Module:Uses Wikidata in January. I'm working in Wikipedia in breton, the continental celtic language. I need some help and I would like to know if you would be willing to give a hand or to give me the name of somebody who could. I dont know anybody who could help here. We are a very small community and the holidays begun this month. The language itself should not give any problem. I linked the pages in breton (brezhoneg) to the pages in english and the code is mostly in english
I've been trying to adapt the template {{Uses Wikidata}} to our wiki to help to spread the use of infoboxes using Wikidata properties. I've created the template and module pages and also some of the other templates needed. Unfortunately it doesn't work as expected. I get the double bullets problem you had, the box is to large and on the left side of the page, the links are writen in bold.
It might be a problem in the template {{Side box}} (where the sidebox is shown on the left side of the page, and in a size different from the english version) but I checked the code for the template and the module and it looks exactly the same as in english, like the template {{yesno}}. The end of an era I'd never thought about

I inadvertently ended an era, and thought that you, as a fellow wikiärchaeologist, might be interested to know. Until today, none of the editors on the first page of ListUsers (chronological) had been indeffed in a way that was likely to be permanent. (Read: Jimbo's been indeffed by rouge admins a few times, and once as compromised, and no one else had been indeffed at all.) But I've indeffed JvaGoddess (User ID#47) as compromised, and it seems unlikely she'll return after 15 years just to reclaim the account, and thus the era of a block-free first page of ListUsers likely ends.

Feels strange. Like I've been forced to help someone desecrate a museum.

P.S. Do you know why the first page of ListUsers ends at 51? What number got skipped‽ -- Tamzin^{[cetacean needed]} (she|they|xe) 03:09, 30 July 2022 (UTC)

@Tamzin: Well using a trick you reminded me of, Special:Redirect/user/36 doesn't work, so that would be the missing user ID. Also the SQL query "select rev_id from revision where rev_user=36;" in my copy of the March 2002 database dump (the earliest relevant one we have) doesn't produce any results. Two things

1. Good news! Sick of seeing the start of ListUsers slowly get locked, I decided to offset things a bit by reaching out to the Johannes Wilm behind User:Johanneswilm (ID 233), and was able to get him back in control of the account.
2. We've got someone in #wikipedia-en-unblock ^connect right now caught in the block on 2001:8003:4000::/35 (block range · block log (global) · WHOIS (partial)). I don't think it's the person who was targeted in the block, since if they get in and create an account they'll be caught pretty fast. I've directed them to ACC, but would you object to switching that to account-creation-allowed? I see that all but the first 5 days of its first block were under those settings.

IP block evasion

Earlier today you blocked 124.148.104.62 (talk · contribs · WHOIS) as an LTA. I came across them because of this edit. Exactly 10 minutes after you blocked the IP, 165.228.169.22 (talk · contribs · WHOIS) came and made this identical edit and based on the geolocation of the two IPs is very obviously the same editor evading the block. I don't know if that second individual IP should also be blocked or if a rangeblock is the answer, but I did want to bring it to your attention since they popped right back up after being blocked. - Aoidh (talk) 11:42, 8 August 2022 (UTC)

User script accessibility

I'm hoping you can give me some pointers. I'm a user script developer. I made Bawl, a script the allows commenting on discussions, creating new sections and also works as a general wiki editor.
Some time ago I saw a guy on TV who used a screen reader. It was an item about website accessibility. He had the speed turned all the way up to eleven. The way he used it, I can't even imagine how he did that. However, when during the interview a popup appeared trying to inform him about some BIOS update for his Lenovo laptop, he was completely stumped. His browser wasn't responding anymore on account of the popup having stolen focus. It was an unscripted event, they didn't talk about the popup or resolve the issue. That was kind of an eye-opener for me: how a seemingly innocuous benevolent popup could completely ruin one's experience.
I want my script to be generally accessible, or at least to be not horribly inaccessible. How can I even know? Are there any common pitfalls? Is there a list of do's and don'ts or a checklist? — Alexis Jazz (talk or ping me) 10:16, 12 August 2022 (UTC)

@Alexis Jazz: Thanks for reaching out, but I actually don't know a general answer to your question. Computer vendors are notorious for having accessibility problems with their software (I'm very lucky that I don't have this sort of issue with my NUC). I've never had a problem with any JavaScript on Wikipedia, but I don't tend to use it that much. Unless you're using completely non-standard form controls or something you'd probably be fine. I did actually check it out because the instructions referred to things like the "blue speech balloon", etc., which aren't helpful descriptions for a blind person. The labels I noticed were fine, except for the "b", "i", and "xyz" buttons, which I'd change to be a bit more informative. I don't think I'd be using this full-time because I'm an extreme creature of habit who just likes things the old way, but it's cool ... I'm using it to write this comment. Just because it's there, I'm going to use Ball to insert a link to a story on TV on the program The Feed featuring me and a sample of my speech synthesiser talking. I'm not exactly happy with how it turned out for a number of reasons but ... there's my synth. I would shorten the link label to "Link name" in the insert a link dialogue and rename the submit button to something else like "Submit a link", because it'd be confusing to have two buttons on a page with the same label. Thank you so much, exactly the feedback I needed! I'll get to work right away. For the labels I largely rely on translations that are already available within MediaWiki. When you say label, do you mean the label or the title? The "b", "i" and "xyz" buttons are styled as a bold B, cursive I and struck xyz. I realize now this would be completely lost on someone using a screen reader. They all have a title attribute (respectively "bold", "italic" and "strikethrough") but I'm guessing your screen reader didn't pick up on that. I'm not sure yet how I can fix that, screen readers should read the title instead of the label for those buttons. I'll ask WP:VPT about this.
The link field has the title "link" and the placeholder "https://www.example.com/lorem/ or article title". I'm guessing you are referring to this placeholder? — Alexis Jazz (talk or ping me) 11:27, 12 August 2022 (UTC)

Screen readers always read the label (e.g. b/i/xyz) in preference to the title, though this can be configured on the screen reader side, and some (but not the one I use) read both the label and title by default. Thanks again for the feedback. I've added aria-labels so bold/italic/strike labels should make more sense now. The placeholder has been shortened and I added invisible labels to all icons so they don't have to rely on the title attribute alone.
Finally got around to watching the segment from The Feed. WOW. At first I thought the synth was some "mysterious hacker sounds" sound effect that was added by The Feed, I couldn't believe that was actually the synth. Nothing has been irretrievably lost ... the old content can always be transferred to another wiki, etc. Sometimes content really has to be cleaned up like that; see this example of my handiwork with massive cleanup like that (I really don't want to end up in a similar situation again; due to my actions it endded up at ANI). The fact that my first edits to Wikipedia, made to the page now at Place names considered unusual, are still around is something of a minor miracle (I had to fish out the first link). I didn't even know about the most recent nomination. But as I said back in 2006 (yes I really had the username Pianoman87 then), I'd be slightly sad for sentimental reasons if the article got deleted but we can't have everything. In a similar situation to that, my first article Graham Waterhouse was deleted within minutes, without a discussion. But this is different: a wealth of information accumulated in years, and with dedication and investment of time I don't dare to estimatae. It hurts nobody, so why not leave it accessible? - Other wiki: what do you have in mind? Yeah not fun. I don't have any other existing wikis in mind but it's not impossible (albeit it would take a lot of work) for one to be created. It's certainly not the first time content on Wikipedia has been dramatically reduced due to excessive detail (fiction comes to mind) and it won't be the last. The point of simulated Braille in articles

The point of simulated Braille in articles relating to Braille, blindness and blind history is to impart on sighted readers the importance of Braille to the subject of the article. Any visual screen reader shows the simulated Braille just fine, while Braille readers don't need it, as their devices transcribe the print into Braille.

You're basically working against your own interests here: as a Braille user, you should support the increased visibility of Braille. Libhye (talk) 05:34, 22 August 2022 (UTC)

@Ilovemydoodle: No, I will not do that under any circumstances. Even if I thought it was warranted, I would not do it without asking the blocking admin, Tamzin, first (I'm aware we're in different time zones, but that doesn't much affect my stance). Unprotect API (redirects and miscellaneous)?

@Steel1943: Actually, I wasn't the original protecting admin; per the log, it was Fences and windows. Having said that, I've undone the protection because it's abundantly clear that it's no longer necessary the last sockpuppet investigations page for the user who vandalised the original redirect was in 2011. Mahalia Jackson

Why do you keep reverting edits people make about Mahalia Jackson being nicknamed "The Queen of Gospel"? Every gospel fan or artist knows that she is the Queen of Gospel, its in anything you read about her. It's annoying that you sit around and revert edits simply because you feel like it. You provide no reason for reverting the edit. Lin Onus

Hi Graham. I hope you're well. Would you mind keeping an eye on the Lin Onus article, please? I've used up my three reverts there and there's a persistent IP editor (I suspect the same person on a different IP from a few days ago) who keeps adding unsourced information about his other offspring. It may well be true, but when I had a quick look at sources the other day couldn't find any corroboration, and they shouldn't be redlinked anyway. Thanks. Hmmm, seems I spoke too soon - he doesn't seem to have got the message about reliable sources. He's created a username (presumably his own), and re-added the names to Lin Onus and his father Bill Onus (although it didn't work there because the infobox doesn't accommodate grandchildren). I think we have been in contact previously. I am trying to get an old laptop working, so I can travel with in a few weeks. I am trying to use wikipedia, but it tells me that you have blocked me for the IP address for range of 2001:8003:4000:0:0:0:0:0/35. The problem on the laptop is that I have forgotten and/or can not find the passwords. Could you please unblock me and maybe suggest how I reset the password. One problem is that I leave my main computer on all the time so at the old age of 83 I forget or lose the password. User:Bduke.

@Bduke: Yes, I remember you from Wikimedia Australia. Sorry about the bother with the very wide IP block. You're only blocked when logged-out though. Assuming you have access to the email address attached to your account, you can use Special:PasswordReset to get a temporary password which you can log in with. I am still a bit unclear about it. The password problem on this machine is in the future - I leave it on all the time. The problem is on my laptop that I want to use when I travel from Australia to UK on October 1. I will leave it until my son comes here on 29th September. At the age of 83 my memory and competences are rapidly declining! I have googled resetting passwords and I think I can handle it then with my son's help. I think it was a mistake, I'm not sure what it had to do with an IP editor but maybe you were deleting a redirect to it and Twinkle goofed and ended up deleting the article. I would like to ask you as to why you removed several reactions of other world leaders in this article. And I would also like to ask why did you revert the ip's classification of world leaders' names sorted by continent, then by country. Thanks. @Nag-Eedit si Mang Robert: Because the edits were block evasion. Undoing edits of block evaders is standard procedure here. Also see this bit of the policy: "Editors who subsequently reinstate edits originally made by a blocked editor take complete responsibility for the content." I don't think it's a good idea for new users to do that ... this 49... editor is known for adding excessive details anyway. Graham87 09:40, 14 September 2022 (UTC)

Thank you for your help all around! - This rose pic was taken on 11 Sep 2021, after sunset, of pale roses on dark background in the colours of the evening sky. 11 Sep 2022 was full of music, Tag des offenen Denkmals, not only singing in church and rehearsals for Verdi's Requiem, but two concerts at special places pictured, one a synagogue (pictured on its wall). Today three DYK: a piece we'll perform on Sunday, a violinist we heard in June playing the Berg Concerto (my brother played in the orchestra), and a Youth Orchestra shaped by a conductor who recently died. Today, we sang old music for two choirs at church, pictured, scroll to the image of the organ of the month of the Diocese of Limburg (my perspective), and if you have time, watch the video about it, talk in German - basically what out article says - and three examples of music. Hi Graham, why did you block Stockstill, Tiffany with access to the talk page revoked? Talk page revocation is usually reserved for likely abuse or for demonstrated abuse, and this case does not appear to have been either of those two things. Izno (talk) 09:59, 21 September 2022 (UTC)

@Izno: Because, just before the block, her talk page appeared like this ... so I thought her being allowed to use it while blocked wouldn't help her case much if at all (not that she'd intentionally abuse it, just that she'd weirdify it even more to the point of unusability). Hi Graham. I don't know if you've seen this before, but there has been long-running discussion on the talk page of this article, and suddenly the main antagonist has just unilaterally moved the page to Kabi Kabi people. Not sure how they managed to do this over a redirect, but are you able to undo the move? I have reinstated the previous article content, but don't see a way of reverting the move. @Laterthanyouthink: I hadn't encountered this dispute before. I've gone and reverted the move (instructions for which are here) and protected the page against further moves (as an administrative action). It's quite possible to move pages over redirects when there's just one redirect edit in the page history. Graham87 10:49, 26 September 2022 (UTC)

@Tumbuka Arch: I assume this is for the Tumbuka Wikipedia, based on your global account information. I can only import edits into the English Wikipedia so I can't help you directly, except to say that when you're using Special:Import, you'll want to check the boxes that say " Copy all the revisions for this page" and " Include all templates and transcluded pages". For more help you can ask at the technical village pump. Of all wikis the German Wikipedia actually has the most experience with importing; their village pump equivalent is here and it should be alright to ask questions in English there. Yes, I do know the import feature though when I try to import the article with its templates included, the templates don't seem to work normally.Instead of looking like a slim box in the right side of the article, they cover the entire page as if it were a huge table.Really weird.

Or maybe I need someone who can just create the templates there.

@Tumbuka Arch: No worries. Yeah you'll need the English technical village pump then. You need to copy some CSS/JS over from the English Wikipedia (from pages like MediaWiki:Common.js, MediaWiki:Common.css, and maybe others) but I don't know any more details than that. The reason I mentioned the German Wikipedia is that they could probably advise better if something went terribly wrong with the process of using the Special:Import page. Discarded the German Wiki, I will try English technical village pump then. Yes I am also an Interface Admin there on my wiki so those pages won't restrict me. I will try to copy these JavaScript (JS) and Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) pages though not clear about the entire process walkthrough.
