I also believe the account Aocloyalist (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · nuke contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log) is them (same topic overlap of left-wing politics, wars, Islam, and Puerto Rico) but they haven't edited in a month. wizzito | say hello! 05:27, 2 April 2023 (UTC)

Also they are active on the range 174.215.176.0/20 (block range · block log (global) · WHOIS (partial)) but it is quite wide and active, so blocking may be out of the question wizzito | say hello! 05:32, 2 April 2023 (UTC)

Better Diffs: Accessibility Considerations

Hey Graham, hope you're doing well! I was wondering if I could ask a (work) favour — I'm taking a look at the potential accessibility considerations in regards to some changes we're planning to make to diffs, and although I'm fairly confident in my understanding of ARIA and the such, the couple of times I've tried to use either JAWS or NVDA I've struggled. Would you be willing and able to screen record both the workflow you describe for viewing diffs, and how your screen reader normally reads a diff (i.e. without viewing the page source etc.)? If you do not already have a preference for screen recording software, I can personally recommend the free, open source ShareX (https://getsharex.com) application. — TheresNoTime-WMF (talk • they/them) 12:54, 7 April 2023 (UTC)

@TheresNoTime-WMF: I could try ... but I'm not sure how useful it would be to you because the audio of the screen reader quite often doesn't correspond at all to what's currently on the screen! When viewing diffs using the HTML source I use JAWS's virtual find feature to search for diffch ... and when reading deletions/insertions JAWS marks them with deletion/end deletion and insertion/end insertion, respectively. April flower

April songs
my story today

Thank you for updating for DGG, who is much missed. The April image shows one little blue flower among a few grass leaves, sticking its head out of snow, melting in crystals around it. The best image of resilience I found. On 9 April, Easter Sunday, I enjoyed seeing the story of Marian Anderson on the Main page, who sang in resilience in Washington on 9 April, Easter Sunday 1939. -- Gerda Arendt (talk) 07:41, 11 April 2023 (UTC)

@Gerda Arendt: No worries, he will be greatly missed. Awwww wow, I was adding some information about Marian Anderson just recently! Graham87 07:50, 11 April 2023 (UTC)

May songs
my story today

And it happened, I had a good story on coronation day: the Te Deum we sang that day (mentioned before). And the following day we sang it for the composer ;) - And today we remember a composer who created music especially for us! - The May image is dominated by a blossoming apple tree that is not very high but very broad, against a backdrop of the high green forest trees. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:11, 9 May 2023 (UTC)

WikiBlind

Hi Graham - hope all is well? I'm getting in touch to ask about the WikiBlind project, after I read about it on your personal timeline. I am not blind myself, but use speech-recognition software for other accessibility-related reasons (I also have a visually impaired younger brother, but he certainly isn't old enough to be using the Internet quite yet). I was, therefore, wondering if I would be eligible to join in some capacity, and assist in accessibility-related matters on Wikipedia in this regard? Thank you in advance, and have a good day! Patient Zerotalk 00:49, 21 May 2023 (UTC)

@Patient Zero: You can join if you like, but it's not particularly active. Probably the best way to help out with accessibility here is to watchlist Wikipedia talk:Manual of Style/Accessibility and Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Accessibility. I thought you'd edited those pages before but I can't find any evidence of that. I know your username from *somewhere* but I can't think where ... Graham87 02:17, 21 May 2023 (UTC)
Oh, you are part of WikiProject Accessibility ... Graham87 12:18, 21 May 2023 (UTC)
Oh, yes! I think I signed up to it a few years ago. Will watchlist both of those pages now - yeah, if that's the main accessibility project and it's got more activity, I'll partake more within that. Looking forward to helping out there. :-) Patient Zerotalk 22:51, 21 May 2023 (UTC)

Just out of curiousity, why replace this comment, made in June of 2006, and removed by the OP in January of 2007 (after I'd edited out the offending material)? --jpgordon𝄢𝄆𝄐𝄇 04:25, 23 May 2023 (UTC)

@Jpgordon: Per guidelines about message removal on talk pages]]. I like to check talk pages to find out if their oldest messages remain intact; on busier talk pages they were often removed/tampered with due to vandalism. I think what was said on talk pages should be a matter of historical record. Sometimes I do choose not to restore messages that the author removed later, but this is probably a borderline case ... it was up for eight months. You can feel free to re-remove if you really want to. I got to Ellis's article through the Konnakol page. Graham87 05:18, 23 May 2023 (UTC)

non wikitext content import

Hello Graham87, import is able to bypass certain parts of the interface administrator controls, however if any adjustments are needed such as another move, or if the content model isn't set correctly, it will be stuck until an interface administrator can work on it. Generally best to defer those, especially if there is a non-userspace request, to Interface administrators' noticeboard. Best regards, — xaosflux Talk 09:16, 26 May 2023 (UTC)

@Xaosflux: Thanks, I thought it might, but didn't want to test it irreversibly (but I realise I could have perhaps tested it in my own userspace). I'll leave you to deal with the relevant requests if you don't mind because you have the necessary permissions. Graham87 09:23, 26 May 2023 (UTC)
@Graham87 anytime, and I agree with you that single author usersandbox things would rarely need to bother with an import; I'll do the one we have open right now as a courtesy as the requester is an established global user. — xaosflux Talk 09:44, 26 May 2023 (UTC)
Hi. I apologize for the unusual request and thank you for being willing to perform the import nonetheless. For some reason I thought the importation of user pages is a more common practice, perhaps because I encounter such importations every now and then on other wikis. Anyway, from now on I will be paying more attention to where I create my user scripts in the first place. Best regards, Guycn2 (talk) 13:01, 26 May 2023 (UTC)

June songs

June songs
my story today

I like today's Main page, and here's why ;) - (DYK that we got filmed when performing the piece mentioned?) - The image here shows an abundance of daisy flowers almost to the horizon, the camera caught 100+ singers in a a half-circle against the sandstone wall of our church -- Gerda Arendt (talk) 15:01, 2 June 2023 (UTC)

@Gerda Arendt: Wow, neat especially re the performance! Graham87 15:12, 2 June 2023 (UTC)
Thank you! - Last weekend was nice, class reunion a funny number of years after completing school, and the lovely park where I spent many Sundays as a child. Today's story is quite dramatic, there's a yt trailer to the hook. If yt has English subtitles, do you get them? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 15:59, 5 June 2023 (UTC)
@Gerda Arendt: Wow, sounds fun. Nope, subtitles don't read out with screen readers here, but it's OK. Richard Strauss is one of those composers whose work doesn't often move me, but when it does, it really really works. I like his magical contemplative music, like Jessye Norman's take on "Morgen!" and "Beim Schlafengehen", but most of the rest I've heard (including that in the link mentioned above) is too much for me. Yesterday I saw and heard the enchanting Diana Tishchenko. I added a pic that I took to her article, also a lovely short video with interview and music. She said its all about communication, and true for us here as well. She turned to individual colleagues in the chamber orchestra behind her (all playing standing except cellos and harpsichord) while playing. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:25, 30 June 2023 (UTC)

Whats the LGA Format in Australia

I would like to know about this format. I already have some idea of what it is from seeing other LGA pages such as the City of Perth, but I find it really minimalist and leaves out key factors of LGAs such as roads (which are the responsibility of LGAs to maintain), education and economy. When compared to other third level divisons like counties in America, it seems that Australian LGA are quite minimal when they could include more information relevant to the shire. But then again, there might be a good explanation. Anyways, have a good WA day. Topeka-GuyWiki (talk) 02:14, 5 June 2023 (UTC)

@Topeka-GuyWiki: It's ... generally the way the article was before you edited it. The City of Perth is a really bad example because it's a central business district. Have you edited here with another account before? Your editing pattern is ... more than a little bizarre. Also these articles are generally only substantially edited by Australians. Graham87 02:25, 5 June 2023 (UTC)
I live in the Shire of Serpentine-Jarrahdale (hence my affection for it) and have been living in Australia since 2009. However, I also see myself as being Thai, Cambodian and British due to my close heritage to these nations, so this is probably why you see weird editing patterns. I normally edit Thai and Cambodian pages due to the lack of details and attention they have but I only edit Australian pages that I have some connection in it, such as residing in it. Topeka-GuyWiki (talk) 02:34, 5 June 2023 (UTC)
The problem is that there isn't really any good Australian LGA articles, so there is no baseline we should be striving for. There is a certain overlap with suburb/locality/town articles, such as Byford, Jarrahdale, Keysbrook, etc. From my experience, LGA articles are more about the governing body (wards, councillors, localities) and historical population (we have population records for LGAs going back to the first Australian census in 1911 but only for localities since 1996), whereas education and transport are more often in the locality articles. Economy is one thing I think would be better suited to LGA articles than locality articles, as the LGA articles cover a larger area which which is more suited to talking about the local economy.
For what its worth, I think what most of what you have added can be kept in. The content is not terribly off base. You have duplicated the list of population though. Until we have an LGA article we can point to and say is a good example. Steelkamp (talk) 05:07, 5 June 2023 (UTC)
A very typical process across the Australian project is that people almost always are exceptionalist - their local suburb, their lga, their region, their state - very few editors allocate time and effort to actually check the whole project for consistencies, and precedents, subsequently their are 'standards' that are in most cases geographically limited. In the early days the Australian Places, and in turn the state projects were the sites of attempts to develop policies/practices for editors to reach and understand an Australian consistency. As time has gone by, the exceptionalism has grown, as well as the numbers of active editors seems to decline, there has been a tendency to ignore the idea of standards across the larger project. Ideally if the process and intent of the Australian places project was resurrected - a template/discussion of LGA article standard for oz, there could be a possible resolution. But it requires discussion as there are variations in the way established articles have been created in different states and territories. JarrahTree 05:46, 5 June 2023 (UTC)

IP Block exemption request

Hello Graham,

Please i will like to request for an IP block exemption for this user:LordXI01 for a duration. He will be contributing to a wikipedia project " Africa Day Campaign". If you can grant him a minimum of 6 months IP block exemption. I did be glad. Below are his details:

User:LordXI01
IP Address:102.176.94.159 JDQ Joris Darlington Quarshie (talk) 07:02, 5 June 2023 (UTC)
@Joris Darlington Quarshie: Already done before you wrote your message by zzuuzz. Graham87 07:11, 5 June 2023 (UTC)
Yes please just noticed it a minute ago. JDQ Joris Darlington Quarshie (talk) 07:12, 5 June 2023 (UTC)
And I found this admins' noticeboard thread and this IP block exemption talk page thread as well. If zzuuzz isn't available you can ask at the admins' noticeboard ... or if I'm online you could ask me too. Graham87 07:18, 5 June 2023 (UTC)

Recent checkuser blocks

I saw you ask at WP:VPI about two recent high-profile checkuser blocks. I know you to be something of a wikihistorian, and I saw no one has directly answered in the thread yet. While I'm not privy to the exact information, the two most recent high-profile checkuser blocks I can recall are User:GizzyCatBella during the recent Holocaust in Poland arbitration case, and User:MalnadachBot's operator (apologies if your screen reader doesn't understand Kannada script) User:ಮಲ್ನಾಡಾಚ್ ಕೊಂಕ್ಣೊ, blocked days ago during the acceptance phase of another arbitration case. Folly Mox (talk) 00:45, 9 June 2023 (UTC)

@Folly Mox: Thanks, wow, I don't usually check out the arbitration pages (AN/ANI can be insane enough) so that's why I missed both of those. I had a gut feeling that perhaps the latter user was involved (though I had only good interactions with them) but I didn't follow up on that. My particular screen reader/speech synthesiser reads most characters that aren't in the Latin, Greek, Hebrew, or Arabic scripts as question marks by default (with a questioning intonation rather than literally saying "Question mark" or "Question?" or something like that), though this can be configured. It's also possible to modify the pronunciation of a particular text string of non-Latin characters, though I've never felt the need to do that because I've never had to interact with two or more users whose names are read as question marks at the same time. Honestly in recent times when I've encountered an established user whose name is read with lots of question marks on the English Wikipedia, I've generally been able to assume it's ಮಲ್ನಾಡಾಚ್ ಕೊಂಕ್ಣೊ and mostly been correct. Hello @Graham87, I will like to request for IPBE for the following users. Users with no account on this wiki can be created. Since they do have an account on other wikis.

Please do update me incase of any situations on circumstances related to any of the accounts in the list. JDQ Joris Darlington Quarshie (talk) 15:07, 21 June 2023 (UTC)

@Joris Darlington Quarshie: Please ask someone else or post to the admins' noticeboard ... it's nearly my bedtime. By the time I'd be able to deal with this request properly, it'll be the next day your time. I would also very much prefer to deal with only two or three accounts at a time, at the most. Well noted with lots of thanks. JDQ Joris Darlington Quarshie (talk) 15:15, 21 June 2023 (UTC)

DYK for Mackay Davashe

On 22 June 2023, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Mackay Davashe, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that Mackay Davashe wrote "Lakutshona Ilanga", the English version of which, sung by Miriam Makeba, became the first South African piece to chart on the Billboard Hot 100? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Mackay Davashe. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Mackay Davashe), and the hook may be added to the statistics page after its run on the Main Page has completed. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.
