It’s an accuracy thing. He did not die at home. He attempted to die at home but didn’t die until several days later in hospital. Jehochman Talk 11:33, 4 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

In the UK, it makes no difference how long it took for him to die. The Coroner's verdict was death by suicide. Graham Beards (talk) 11:49, 4 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Billy Bragg[edit]

Hiya!

Thank you very much for protecting Billy Bragg's page.

Just a heads up that when his page was vandalised calling him cis, it's because he's a trans ally: https://twitter.com/billybragg/status/1537403855822012419 That vandalism counts as transphobia - not just normal vandalism. Under WP:No Nazis, this vandalism would be indefinitely blocked on sight since it's discriminatory against trans people. I'm not trying to tell you how to do your job, I'm just saying to keep in mind that these weren't ordinary incidents. Due to the similarity of the edits in such a short time-span, I believe this may be a co-ordinated effort by transphobes. 92.10.13.209 (talk) 17:42, 18 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

User:Jameslynch99[edit]

Not saying your block was wrong, but can we try to work with James over these issues? That Mick Lynch doesn't want an article on Wikipedia counts for nothing. He meets the notability threshold and an article has been written. It is unlikely to be deleted via AfD. Wikipedia's job is to ensure it complies with BLP. If James raises any issues, we should work through them in a collaborative manner. Mjroots (talk) 13:02, 22 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Erm.. I didn't see James' comment until after I issued the block. I came to the article after seeing Wikipedia ridiculed on a journalist's Facebook page, where a screenshot of an earlier vandalised version of the Lynch article was posted. I saw that James had already had a warning and I acted accordingly. I have no particular interest in the Lynch article as I am busy working on Virology. I think James just wants the article deleted, which is not at all likely. I don't think James is likely to raise any issues that we cannot deal with under WP:BLP. Graham Beards (talk) 13:13, 22 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I saw a screenshot of the vandalism on Twitter. I'm going to temporarily watchlist the article and will go through the history of the article to see if there is anything that needs to be hidden from the public gaze. Mjroots (talk) 13:26, 22 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

NIHR studies[edit]

Hi,

I've seen that you removed some of studies from the NIHR Evidence page for being primary sources. I have posted on the WikiProject Medicine talk page here about adding NIHR sources as part of my Wikipedia residency. The reasoning behind using NIHR Evidence is that even though some of the articles are based on primary sources they are chosen by a committee of medical professionals based on their importance, strength of evidence so in essence they go through sort of an evaluation or review. Also the reference removed from the Antimicrobial resistance article is a health technology assessment, I think that is counted as strong evidence. What do you think? Thanks, Adam Harangozó (NIHR WiR) (talk) 09:25, 7 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I presume are referring to this edit [1]. I removed the addition by a newly registered editor because it was based on a single primary study and there were spelling errors. I think we need much more evidence to support the claim that three days of antibiotic treatment in kids with pneumonia is as effective as seven. I don't see why you think "a health technology assessment" complies with WP:MEDRS. Graham Beards (talk) 10:26, 7 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

rotavirus[edit]

hello, Graham Beards! i had two questions regarding this article and the associated blurb.

  • is the singular form "rotavirus" generally used when the virus is referred to by its common name? i had assumed otherwise because "Rotaviruses" was used in the second sentence of the article lead. this is also why i had assumed that many of the capitalized instances of the singular form were using the name of the genus, since i know that, for larger life forms, whether the singular or plural form is used may depend on whether the organism is referred to by its common or scientific name and whether the name is preceded by an article. for example, one may state "Oryctolagus cuniculus was domesticated centuries ago", "Bunnies were domesticated centuries ago", or "The bunny was domesticated centuries ago", but "Bunny was domesticated centuries ago" does not sound right to me. the coronavirus article appears to be using the plural form in the statement "Human coronaviruses were discovered in the 1960s", but i do not know if the same should apply here. i admittedly have no expertise in the matter, having only learned while copyediting this blurb that "rotavirii" is not a commonly used plural form.
The common name is "rabbit". Graham Beards (talk) 06:59, 18 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • is it still the case that genome segment 9 is believed to be the only genome segment that codes for two proteins? the cited estes and cohen source is from 1989 and only lists five nonstructural proteins in its table 4, while the featured article's table lists six nonstructural proteins, with genome segment 11 accounting for the encoding of two of them. (the nsp6 article also mentions this.) nsp6, however, is found encoded in an out-of-phase open reading frame, so i do not know if that is why genome segment 11 was not considered to be a genome segment that coded for two proteins. also, the featured article's table is based on the sa11 strain, so perhaps genome segment 11 generally does not code for two proteins.
The article is correct see: Uprety T, Wang D, Li F (September 2021). "Recent advances in rotavirus reverse genetics and its utilization in basic research and vaccine development". dying (talk) 21:06, 17 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. First of all, you could make my life easier by writing proper sentences. Secondly, I suggest you read this by the International Committee for Taxonomy of Viruses. With regard to the rotavirus genome coding assignments, I think I have got it right. I'll double check when it is not past my bedtime. Best regards. Graham Beards (talk) 21:42, 17 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you today for the article, introduced (in 2008): I'm self-nominating this article for featured article because I have worked on Rotavirus for four months and now I think it is ready. I have been fortunate to have received a lot of help and guidance from very experienced editors and contributors whose names are on the article's Discussion page. (Although this does imply support and any remaining issues are probably all my own work). The WP:MOS has been followed throughout and the images are my own and have been donated freely to the project. The article is stable and the subject is not controversial. The article is written from a neutral point of view and all facts are supported by in-line citations from reliable sources, of which free-content material has been used when it has been possible. In structuring the article I have been mindful of the great variety Wikipedia readers and have placed the more technical/difficult material at the end."! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 14:00, 18 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

"such as"[edit]

Hi! It's good to know that someone "patrols" Introduction to viruses. :) About this revert: the repetition is a fair point, but "(influenza virus)" makes it sound like this virus is the only one transmitted that way. --o_andras (talk) 15:19, 22 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi nice to meet you. I think I do more than patrol these articles. Taken out of context you could be right but the article says earlier in the Lead "Viruses such as influenza are spread through the air by droplets of moisture when people cough or sneeze." But I'm happy to put the "such as" back in if you think it is an improvement; it's a trivial point and one not worth debating in my view. Best regards, Graham Beards (talk) 15:28, 22 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I have changed it to "Some virus infections, such as norovirus and rotavirus, are spread by contaminated food and water, by hands and communal objects, and by intimate contact with another infected person, while others like covid and influenza viruses are airborne." Hello Graham! I am planning to (at least partially) tackle the exercise article, which is in a rather abyssmal state. I noticed the amount of coverage medical sources have regarding the immune system and exercise, and upon glossing over immune system, there weren't any mentions of exercise, physical activity etc., which is very surprising. Wouldn't it be wise to have a section dedicated to the effects of exercise, perhaps below the "Sleep and rest" section? I've found some great systematic reviews on the topic, and a few umbrella reviews mentioning it. I'd be happy to help out with creating such a section. Any thoughts? Cheers - Wretchskull (talk) 09:57, 9 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, yes you are right. It is a serious omission. May I suggest we collaborate on a section? Graham Beards (talk) 10:06, 9 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Excellent! I'm very busy today but I have plenty of time this weekend. I'll give you a notice when I'm ready! Search wherever you want and you'll stumble upon some great findings on this topic; Cochrane and PubMed seems like a good start, but I'm sure the refs you already used in immune system are also useful. Wretchskull (talk) 10:22, 9 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I'm looking forward to a fruitful collaboration. Graham Beards (talk) 10:29, 9 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Hello again! I've picked a few sources here, mostly from a journal specialized in this topic (Exercize Immunology Review). I was wondering what the structure of such a section should be. Do you think we should have a paragraph explaining the technical microscopic changes and a paragraph below for its studied effects on infections, inflammation, cancer, etc.? Wretchskull (talk) 09:18, 11 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, it's best if we only use reviews as these are compliant with WP:MEDRS. From a quick glance , I think I spotted some primary studies. Perhaps we should move our conversation to the article's Talk Page? That way others can pitch in. With regard to the section's structure, I suggest the heading "Effect of physical excercise" ( I think the article uses UK English, but I will have to check), followed by a section on the effects on innate immunity, one on adaptive immunity and, as you said, effects on disease course (but we must avoid primary studies). Thoughts? Best regards, Graham Beards (talk) 11:32, 11 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Of course. I'll start working on its medical effects, but I would appreciate if you could help with innate/adaptive immunity as my knowledge in that topic is nowhere near as vast as an expert like yours. If I have any questions I'll use the article talk page from now on. By the way, regarding the sources, I was surprised when you said some were primary. I assume it's because it doesn't have the blue highlight with the word "review" on it (like this one)? The title of such sources contain the word "review", otherwise I wouldn't use them. All MEDRS sources I use are filtered by review, systematic review, or meta analysis. I might be missing something, though, and I'd be happy if you could correct me. Cheers - Wretchskull (talk) 13:47, 11 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I hadn't looked at them closely. Graham Beards (talk) 14:57, 11 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
