Requesting some help

Hello and Greetings,

More than one and half year ago you had supported me with copy editing in my first Wikipedia article Kithaab relating to women's rights. One more time I am looking for some support in Draft:Avret Esir Pazarları in copy edit.

Actually I am not in too much hurry, you can take your time, since it would be okay for me to bring article in main space as late as 8 March 21.

Thanks and warm regards

Elizabeth Willing Powel scheduled for TFA

This is to let you know that the Elizabeth Willing Powel article has been scheduled as today's featured article for January 17, 2021. Please check the article needs no amendments. If you're interested in editing the main page text, you're welcome to do so at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/January 17, 2021, but note that a coordinator will trim the lead to around 1000 characters anyway, so you aren't obliged to do so.

For Featured Articles promoted recently, there will be an existing blurb linked from the FAC talk page, which is likely to be transferred to the TFA page by a coordinator at some point.

We suggest that you watchlist Wikipedia:Main Page/Errors from the day before this appears on Main Page. Thanks! Jimfbleak - talk to me? 16:32, 11 December 2020 (UTC)

Thank you for the article - finally a woman in 2021! - introduced: "Elizabeth Willing Powel has been called a forgotten "Founding Mother" of the United States. An apt moniker for a woman perhaps forgotten by history but whose influence on early American History is evident in her communiques with the notables of her period, including many of the Founding Fathers of the United States who she entertained at her home at Powel House (now a museum in Philadelphia). She is most often remembered for a light exchange with Benjamin Franklin which became an often quoted statement about the Constitution of the United States. The story goes as such: a "lady" asked Franklin "What have we got, a republic or a monarchy?", to which he responded, "A republic ... if you can keep it". Who this "lady" was is often glossed over. This article attempts to answer that question with the best sources available today. Powel was a kingmaker and power broker of her time who counseled Supreme Court justices, presidents, senators, and mayors."! - Happy WP 20 and new year! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 10:37, 17 January 2021 (UTC)

User:GreenMeansGo thank you for the kind compliment!! First a chapter coming out in an edited volume in January 2022 - the book will come after that. Deep in the writing process now! Not nagging, just wondering, respond in months or years if you wish. Mine is going nowhere as fast as last time I was here, still down for buying a copy of yours some day. Have a memorably descriptive Twenties, now that looking back has gotten old again! InedibleHulk (talk) 05:00, 2 January 2021 (UTC)

Hey @InedibleHulk:. Eh. It's still just a sprawling manuscript. I did get a piece published in an independent print magazine this week. But I'm afraid that and a new FA has been the extent of the concentrated writing I've had time for. It's been a hectic year. GMGtalk 16:46, 3 January 2021 (UTC)
Yeah, still feels like 2020 here, too. No guilt trip implied, there are more important things in life than writing. Cheers on that recent piece, though. I haven't earned a dime or seen my "real name" in print since 2011. No FAs at all, ever. It's hard workers like yourself that bring dignity back to this profession, and maintain decency in the craft. An RfC at Talk:Race and intelligence revisits the question, considered last year at WP:FTN, of whether or not the theory that a genetic link exists between race and intelligence is a fringe theory. This RfC supercedes the recent RfC on this topic at WP:RSN that was closed as improperly formulated.

Prison education

Hi GreenMeansGo. I can't believe it's been 3 years since we were looking at ways to improve Prison education following its failed FAC. Time flies. I remember deciding to not take on any more FACs until I finished my masters degree. I took on a (considerably less complicated) FAC when I finished that about this time last year, but aside from that I just haven't undertaken any massive projects on Wikipedia in the last three years due to other commitments. I'm reaching out as I finally feel like I have the time to try and tackle this again. I've spent today updating a couple things and reading over all the old concerns. It seems we got it in fairly good shape by the end there and taking it to FAC level feels like a much smaller task than I remember it being, to the point where I'm wishing I had just continued to work on it at the time. The only thing really outstanding from the FAC is one editor strongly suggested a sub-section on education in military prisons (though I note you disagreed with their reasoning). I'm also not convinced such a section is needed, and I recall not being able to find any good sources on the subject when I last search back in 2018. I might make an effort to find some sources on it though in case it gets brought up again. To be honest, the article could also give a little more coverage to education in juvenile prisons.

I've also downloaded the last three sources another editor suggested using on the article's talk page and plan to read them in the coming days, though I don't think there will be any drastic changes from that. The only real problem I'm seeing in the article is the overall one it has always had. In the sense that the history of prison education is not a widely researched area, and accordingly, all the history sections are a disparaging collection of everything we could find jammed together in the most coherent way possible. Given the lack of coverage on the subject, I'm still not seeing a way to fix that though, and I note there was no consensus on how to do that at the FAC anyway.

Anyway, no pressure, but I'm wondering if you can you look over the article again and tell me if you'd support it for FAC in its current shape? And if not, let me know what you think needs to be improved. Also if you'd like to go a step further and help me work on it again that would also be appreciated, though not expected. Hope you've been well and looking forward to hearing back from you. Damien Linnane (talk) 07:07, 18 July 2021 (UTC)

I’d be interested in helping with this! Shushugah (talk) 11:38, 18 July 2021 (UTC)
Hi Shushugah. Well that's unexpected, though very much appreciated. Also awesome to see you worked on Incarceration in the United States so therefore have background knowledge of this overall topic in general. I'm happy for you to help as much as you like. We could always use another set of eyes reading the article and pointing out any issues, if nothing else. Happy to continue talking about this on my talk page or the article's if you like. Up to you. :) Damien Linnane (talk) 12:00, 18 July 2021 (UTC)
  • Oh geez. I'd completely forgotten about this. I'll try to pitch in as a I can. I've still not totally returned to a regular schedule from COVID, but I am around, even if I'm not able to spend super duper amounts of concentrated time editing. GMGtalk 14:04, 18 July 2021 (UTC)
All good; I understand completely. The article was always in the back of my mind but I'd been too busy to consider working on it until recently anyway. I'm happy for you to help out whenever, and in any way. There's no immediate rush. :) Damien Linnane (talk) 14:12, 18 July 2021 (UTC)
Just letting you know I've now finished with all the sources that had already been suggested on the talk page. In other words, I've gotten the article to the point where I probably would have re-nominated it for FAC if I'd stuck with working on the project back in 2018. I'll probably look for more updated statistics as time permits, as obviously statistics in the article are now somewhat more out of date than they used to be (though as you may recall for many countries the most recent statistics they had available three years ago was for the 90s and early 2000s. Due to the limited research in this field I doubt that has changed much). Anyway I'm not seeing any huge deficits in the article now so I'll wait for your feedback before proceeding with anything else. I'm still not in any particular hurry though. :) Damien Linnane (talk) 07:08, 19 July 2021 (UTC)

  • Hey @Ashfaquenabi: It doesn't look like the subject meets our notability standards, which generally requires sustained in depth coverage in independent secondary sources. Unfortunately here, the vast majority of individuals will not meet the requirements to have their own Wikipedia article. Links to things like social media and self published books don't really help for the purposes of Wikipedia. GMGtalk 15:55, 20 July 2021 (UTC)

Ali Asghar Jems

Ali Asghar Jems is iranian singer. He started his career with two songs and became world famous. Ali Asghar Jams is scheduled to release his first official album in January. Nasimrezaei1 (talk) 19:40, 16 August 2021 (UTC)

  • Hey Nasimrezaei1. I may be of limited help here, since it seems likely many sources may be in Farsi. But looking at what you've posted on your talk page, you're going to have to dig up better sources if you want to write a biography on Wikipedia. Things like Apple Music and Spotify are just routine listings, and don't really help us write content for an article. The kind of thing you need to find is someone writing lengthy coverage of the artist, like album reviews or biopics. If those kinds of sources aren't available in any language, then the artist will need to wait for more in depth coverage before they qualify for their own article on Wikipedia. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

WP:AFC Helper News

Hello! I wanted to drop a quick note for all of our AFC participants; nothing huge and fancy like a newsletter, but a few points of interest.

  • AFCH will now show live previews of the comment to be left on a decline.
  • The template {{db-afc-move}} has been created - this template is similar to {{db-move}} when there is a redirect in the way of an acceptance, but specifically tells the patrolling admin to let you (the draft reviewer) take care of the actual move.

Short and sweet, but there's always more to discuss at WT:AFC. Stop on by, maybe review a draft on the way? Whether you're one of our top reviewers, or haven't reviewed in a while, I want to thank you for helping out in the past and in the future. Cheers, Primefac, via MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 16:00, 16 February 2022 (UTC)

Reliability tools?

Talking to Peter M today, he mentioned recalling that that you worked on a citation reliability tool a few years ago, but didn't recall the details. Is that true? If so I'd love to discuss :) – SJ + 23:49, 9 September 2022 (UTC)

@SJ: Oh lord, I think he might have the wrong guy. I helped start WP:RSPS. But that's not like an automated tool. It's really the opposite. It's supposed to catalog painstakingly detailed community discussion. GMGtalk 02:25, 10 September 2022 (UTC)

This was a terrible idea, which will have no beneficial result of any kind, but merely waste the time of editors who could be doing something useful and/or satisfying instead. Do you have chapter and verse for what you call "the proper way to do this"? Is that proper way codified, or even exemplified, somewhere? Also, I will urge you to not address people you're thwarting as "friend", as you did in that edit summary. It seems designed to irritate. Bishonen | tålk 16:29, 11 September 2022 (UTC).

Well for what it's worth, I've tried to get myself away from things like the colloquial "bro" or "dude" because it presumes the internet anonymous neutral of male.
I don't think I need to explain to you of all people that the practice of redirecting new articles or draftifying them has been controversial because it amounts effectively to unilateral deletion. Editors are free to BEBOLD but if their bold actions are contested — in this case primarily by the author — then the default is to rely on community consensus. An article with 200 some citations isn't exactly the normal stuff that NPP would redirect or draftify. "Academic research about UFOs and related phenomena" isn't a particularly plausible redirect either, it doesn't seem to be aimed at helping readers navigate the project, and would itself probably qualify for RfD. It seems mainly aimed at effective speedy deletion for an article that doesn't meet any CSD criteria.
I don't think I need to blue link any of this stuff. You've probably written more policy than I have. GMGtalk 18:13, 11 September 2022 (UTC)

Walt Nauta

I closed AFD:Walt Nauta. I understand you might object to the early closure per WP:SNOW, but the outcome was pretty straightforward and predictable. It might be worth having a larger discussion on our policies related to WP:NOTNEWS/WP:BLPCRIME/etc. to figure out how we should handle all these types of cases for the future rather than a single AFD. –MJLTalk 20:25, 11 June 2023 (UTC)
