Mohammed Shitta image[edit]

Hello HkB99, and welcome. In a moment i will add a welcoming template to this page as it contains a number of links which i hope you'll find useful. Right now, however, i need to ask you about the picture you added at Mohammed Shitta Bey. In the information you added when you uploaded the picture, it says both that it is your own work and that it was made in 1894; clearly they cannot both be true. I suspect that you have scanned an existing picture, but you have also labelled it as copyright, which i don't think it is likely to be, having been made that long ago. Is it possible for you to make the status of the image clear, both its source and its copyright status (i.e., is it in the public domain?)? Thank you. Happy days, ~ LindsayHello 15:13, 6 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Lindsay,
Thank you for the warm welcome and for addressing your concerns regarding the image I uploaded of Mohammed Shitta-Bey.
The image in question indeed originates from 1894, capturing Mohammed Shitta-Bey, to whom I am directly related by five generations. This photograph was taken by a photographer commissioned by the Shitta-Bey family and has been preserved as part of our family's estate, inherited through the will of Mohammed Shitta-Bey himself. It represents not only a piece of personal history but also an artifact of cultural and historical significance.
The version I uploaded is a high-resolution scan of the original photograph, which was part of a larger image hanging in my grandfather's house in Lagos. This particular version has been cropped from the larger scene, focusing exclusively on Mohammed Shitta-Bey. The cropping and digital editing process, aimed at highlighting this specific subject, was conducted by myself, thus constituting my own novel work. The presence of the iPhone bar at the bottom of the image, a result of the cropping process from a screenshot on my phone, attests to the modern effort involved in creating this specific version for educational and historical purposes.
Regarding the copyright status, while the original image, by virtue of its age, would typically fall into the public domain, the derivative work I've created—through scanning, cropping, and editing—represents a contemporary creative effort. This modern derivative work is copyrighted under the year 2024, held by SHITTA & DAVIES, distinguishing it from the public domain status of the original photograph. This approach aligns with copyright laws pertaining to new works derived from public domain sources, ensuring the protection of the digital effort involved in its creation.
Beyond this image, my possession extends to a significant collection of historical documents and materials, including original estate documents, case files, and rare publications related to the Shitta-Bey family and the broader historical narrative of Lagos. These items, deeply rooted in Nigerian and Yoruba heritage, are similarly preserved and shared with a sense of stewardship and a commitment to historical education and cultural preservation.
I hope this clarifies the status of the uploaded image and the broader context of the collection it belongs to.

Thanks for the answer, HkB99. I wasn't certain of the status, so i asked the experts at another WP page; you might want to look at their replies, which seem to me to indicate that you may have copyright on the image as you manipulated it, but that as you uploaded it you have released it in accordance with the applicable licence. You'll find the discussion here, and i suggest you take a look ~ i have learned a huge amount here just by reading discussions. Also, i'm going to go to the article and update the caption of the image, so it better explains it. Hope to see you around in the future! Happy days, ~ LindsayHello 10:32, 7 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hey there. I've had a look at the page.
Having carefully examined the situation, I confirm my ownership of the copyright, as I've previously outlined. However, in light of current Wikipedia policies, I’ve decided to take steps to protect the copyright of my work more cautiously. This is a precaution until I feel more confident in the platform's ability to safeguard novel works and copyright. I appreciate your understanding as we navigate these important considerations together. HkB99 (talk) 13:13, 7 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yikes! I'm disappointed, of course. To be perfectly honest, i'm not certain that you can withdraw it like that, the licence you uploaded it under says [t]he licensor cannot revoke these freedoms, but i am no expert. I'd suggest you ask on the page i pointed out earlier, because i wouldn't want either your or Wikipedia to be breaking the terms of the licence. It seems to me that when i have uploaded a file (only a couple of times, nothing as useful as yours), the upload process says that it is irrevocable, so i don't know. Anyway, hope to see you around. It's all good. Anyways, what made your interested in Mohamedu? HkB99 (talk) 17:42, 9 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
