I am not sure how to figure out if the image I found through Google image search is copyrighted. It would seem to me that a picture of the exterior of the Cathedral in Phoenix by a parishioner is acceptable for use on the Wikipedia page for the Diocese of Phoenix because a parishioner would never object to this limited use. But how can I be certain? I have given the full URL and the name of the author. The first time I uploaded the image, a different URL was used from a website other than the author of the image who had the photo on his personal blog. I presume that the photo belonged to Tony Hernandez. I replaced the "ship of fools" URL with the "my return home" blog URL. There are so many different types of licensing tags that I am confused about which one to use. Thank you for your help. Hpruxpbvm (talk) 03:45, 3 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Unless the website you get the image from explicitly states that they have released copyright, (Either into the Public Domain or a Creative Commons license) then the image is assumed to be copyrighted. Whether or not a parishioner would care is irrelevant, unfortunately. One option you could pursue, however, is trying to email the website owner, and ask if they will release the image under a Wikipedia-compatible license. However, I think that the way it is being used fails the first non-free content criterion. This criterion states that files used under claims of fair use may have no free equivalent; in other words, if the file could be adequately covered by a freely-licensed file or by text alone, then it may not be used on Wikipedia.
