It seems decent, but be careful when breaking it up like that. What if the plantation deaths were in Havana, for example? You would've counted the deaths twice. Not sure about the discrepancy. The NHC list even cites the MWR, but the MWR doesn't list over 100 deaths. Sometimes you just have to list the total effects without going into location-by-location breakdown. --♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 15:13, 13 October 2011 (UTC)

Be sure to write good summaries for every storm, and use the same sources that allowed you to write the two storm articles. Be sure to use the meta data here for the individual storms. Collaboration

Heya! I noticed we have somewhat similar editing styles. We could put that to use and collaborate on a project, e.g. working on making a specific hurricane season a good topic. Well, the ideal thing would be to do a season that's in pretty bad shape. We'll learn much more from that than working on one that's in decent shape and only requires a few quick tweaks to get to GT. We'll have to look at the project class assessments, which can be found here. Two possibilities would be the 1992 and 1996 seasons. The 1992 season is a bit easier, since it only has a few articles at C-class and two of them are already GAs. The 1996 season, however, has a lot more articles with only one at GA and a bunch at start class. I really don't mind which season we do; that's your call. I know George is busy with two seasons (iirc the 1995 and 1997 season), so any season but those would be awesome. Auree ★ 13:59, 4 October 2011 (UTC)

Tropical Depression Numbering issues prior to 1988

This is a repost from the project page, where I have mentioned it a few times over the years:

NHC added the non-developmental database into their ATCF system in February, which means that the old tracks which were transcribed from graph paper to digital format 3-4 years ago are now part of the official database. A woohoo and a d'oh are both in order because of this addition. However, other than some formatting issues during the digitization, a formal reanalysis has not been completed for these systems, as far as far as I can tell. Nor do I remember seeing formal TD designations in that file, which now means that there are two ways to number TDs from 1981-1987 (real-time and ATCF renumbering), three different ways to number depressions between 1972 and 1987 (real-time numbering, after-the-fact numbering the following year, and ATCF numbering which are all different), and four ways to number them between 1967 and 1971 (real-time numbering which covers both the Atlantic and EPac, Atlantic-only numbering, after-the-fact numbering the following year, and ATCF numbering). The big omission (whether on purpose or by accident) was TD 9 of 1977, which impacted NC. This also means that the mainly extratropical Late November 1984 nor'easter is there as tropical for its whole track. Oy. Thegreatdr (talk) 20:51, 22 March 2011 (UTC)

It probably wouldn't appear in Google news then. Although, you should try looking for just Nicaragua in that time period. You might have to go through a few pages, but in a typical day in 1906, I can't see there being many stories about a Central American country. Hey Hurricanefan, you know I'm in agreement with you (mostly) on those Occupy articles--but please refrain from using those awful, huge boxes. They don't present your argument any better than normal font and layout, and IMO are the equivalent of shouting (see, for instance, WP:SHOUT and WP:IMRIGHT. I've chastised Rangoon11 for the same thing on a different AfD, and that was before I saw that they took your cue. Call me old-fashioned if you like... Drmies (talk) 16:44, 20 October 2011 (UTC)

First, take a look at other seasons in that time period that are good. That might give some ideas of what you could do for a lede. Personally, I would indicate an overall summary, indicating the strongest/deadliest/most notable storm(s). Office Hours

Stubs

You contributed to a recent discussion about an editor who was creating many stubs. The conclusion was that this was just a case of a prolific editor, with no violation of policy. Re: Cindy

Hey, yea! Nice work on it. Here are a few thoughts that came to mind.

• You should try and find a better opening sentence. Right now, that sounds like the storm was an absolute snore-fest. Also, I'd avoid the term "a weak hurricane". Tell that to the people of the northeastern United States that they were only impacted by a weak Hurricane Irene.
• "A cut-off cold-core low formed on July 5, quickly developing into a tropical depression as it tracked north-northwestward. " - the track map says it went north-northeastward.
• "as it approached the coast of South Carolina. Early on July 9, Cindy made landfall near McClellanville, South Carolina" - watch for state redundancy. Try and find a way to avoid that.
• " On July 11, the hurricane passed over Cape Cod" - it wasn't a hurricane then, though.
• In the 2nd lede paragraph, you say the damage was minimal, and then you use a dash to describe the deaths. That format should be reserved if you are extrapolating on the damage, not when you're going into a different topic.
• "Little other damage, if any, was caused by Cindy. In total, Cindy wrought $75,000 in damage." - try combining the sentences.
• "The origins of Cindy can be attributed to a deepening low-pressure area that tracked from the Great Lakes as a related cold front traveled toward the southeast and became unmoving over the Atlantic, extending from northern Florida to Bermuda. " - whoa, long. Try shortening and making it simpler.
• "With the break in the shortwave trough" - what break? When you use "the something", it implies something specific, but you'd never mentioned a break before.
• "As an anticyclone intensified" - where was the anticyclone?
• "observed maximum sustained winds of 52–56 knots" - avoid using knots.
• What happened after it transitioned into an extratropical cyclone?
• You should split the first paragraph of preps and impact. The first half is preparation based, and the second half appears to be overall impact. When you mention people evacuating, that should go with the preps portion.
• "In Georgetown, South Carolina, a driver was killed while driving on U.S. Route 17 when a tree toppled onto their car.[11] In addition, the Sampit River topped its banks" - they don't seem related at all, so it was awkward to see "In addition"
• "Tides were about 2.5 feet (0.76 m) above normal during Cindy" - where?
• "only 600 of the normal population of about 6,500 endured the storm." - instead of endured (which could be ambiguous), I'd say something like "chose not to evacuate" or something.
• "The Congaree River rose dramatically near Columbia during the hurricane, prompting the issuance of an emergency flood forecast,[8] where rainfall totaled 5.82 inches (148 mm);[15] however, some reliable unofficial sources state rainfall totaled to amounts near 15 inches (380 mm)" - you had already mentioned that last bit only a paragraph earlier in that intro impact paragraph. I suggest you remove it from one of these places. In fact, I would personally keep that first paragraph to be only preparations, and then move the impact into the sections.
• Same with the people evacuating. That should all be together.
• "A total of eleven tornadoes were reported in association with Cindy." - were all of them in South Carolina
• "A tornado was observed near Nags Head near 1:40 pm local time on July 10, and a second was observed 25 minutes later." - that should be moved where you mention the rest of the tornado info
• Here is some Canada impact that you should include. --♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 15:29, 4 November 2011 (UTC)

The Canada report indicates dissipation. As for the fracture, you might wanna ask User:Juliancolton or User:Cyclonebiskit. They've forgotten more about meteorology than I'll ever know. WP:UWTEST members update

Article Feedback Tool - Newsletter 1

Hey, guys and girls! You're receiving this because you signed up (or manually requested) the Article Feedback Tool Version 5 Newsletter. This is for people who care about making the AFT a better feature, but don't necessarily want to have to participate in every discussion. Instead, I'll be sending a newsletter around twice a month talking about what's been decided and what's still up for discussion - that way, if you're interested in specific features or ideas, you'll know when to jump in :). If you know anyone who fits into this category (or you're a talkpage watcher who does) please sign up here to receive more updates in the future.

First off, editors have already been picking at the basic design, and I've forwarded their suggestions to the devs. Those ideas which are worthy of further investigation (or being programmed into the software) are listed in the status box at the top of the talkpage. Community suggestions that the devs like include:

• Allowing for up and down-voting of comments to indicate priority (suggested by User:Bensin)
• Having comments link to the version of the article (as well as the article) that they refer to (suggested by User:RJHall)
• Including the AFT box as a hidden drop-down from a "feedback" button on section headings (suggested by User:Utar)

So already there's been some great ideas - I was in a meeting yesterday in which they confirmed that the developers are actively looking at how to include Utar's suggestion pretty quickly. There are still a lot of open issues, however; most pressing this week is what level of access IPs should have to submitted comments? The Foundation's plan calls for IP addresses to be only allowed to read the comments, but not to vote on or comment on their priority - this is intended to reduce gaming - but editors may have different opinions. If you like this level of access, want something more open, or want something more closed, please drop a note here.

User:Belugaboy/Block and my Userpage Banner

I'm not the one who came up with the idea for the banner, I got it from User:Ezekiel 7:19. And by the way, I've been previously asked to remove this page, and other editors have stepped in and told me not to listen, which I don't. As one told me, "some userpages deserve to be deleted because they are just pompous crap, but there's nothing wrong with a secret page." I'm trying to bring humor and enlightenment to the editors of the encyclopedia, and what you're suggesting is not letting me do that. There's already a reply on the MfD page. Yourname LTA

Would you consider filing a long-term abuse report for User:Yourname, a vandal who has been blocked since April 2009 and in recent days has resurfaced on a botnet using many different IPs. His trademark: A suicide note with text as follows: "HELP ME I FEEL LIKE IM GOING TO KILL MYSELF". One IP vandalized my talk page today, causing it to be protected. On ANI, there is a discussion about a ban being placed on this user, which was thought of by User:Jasper Deng. Occupy

Hi Hurricane, about User:Hurricanefan25/Occupy. You suggest that an Occupy protest is notable "if there is any moderate a considerable number of arrests (shooting, rock-throwing, etc.) violence in the protest" / "has a considerable number of arrests". Accusation of personal attack

I strongly contest your accusation of personal attack. If you take a look at Future Perfect's userpage, he has the exact same infobox on his own userpage before I started hosting that infobox on my userpage, which I perceived to be a personal attack against me. Article Feedback Tool newsletter

Hey, all! A quick update on how version 5 of the Article Feedback Tool is developing. I'm sending this to both newsletter recipients and regular participants, because I appreciate we've been a bit quiet :).

So, we're just wrapping up the first round of user contributions. A big thank you to everyone who has contributed ideas (a full list of which can be found at the top of the page); thanks almost entirely to contributions by editors, the tool looks totally different to how it did two months ago when we were starting out. Big ideas that have made it in include a comment voting system, courtesy of User:Bensin, an idea for a more available way of deploying the feedback box, suggested by User:Utar, and the eventual integration of both oversight and the existing spam filtering tools into the new version, courtesy of..well, everyone, really :).

For now, the devs are building the first prototypes, and all the features specifications have been finalised. That doesn't mean you can't help out, however; we'll have a big pile of shiny prototypes to play around with quite soon. If you're interested in testing those, we'll be unveiling it all at this week's office hours session, which will be held on Friday 2 December at 19:00 UTC. If you can't make it, just sign up here. After that, we have a glorious round of testing to undertake; we'll be finding out what form works the best, what wording works the best, and pretty much everything else under the sun. As part of that, we need editors - people who know just what to look for - to review some sample reader comments, and make calls on which ones are useful, which ones are spam, so on and so forth. If that's something you'd be interested in doing, drop an email to okeyes@wikimedia.org.

GA reviews

Hi there, I had a look at your two reviews, and they look pretty good to me. You seem to be paying close attention to prose, which is good. I don't know anything about hurricanes and wouldn't have picked those to review, so I can only comment in a general way.

• One thing I would say is try not to be too vague (eg. "there's a few rather terse sentences in the article. Try to fix those.") Try to be specific. If there are lots of terse sentences, then maybe just give a couple of examples. You made some good specific points after that though.
• It's very easy to pick out things that could be improved that aren't actually part of the GA criteria. For example, in relation to the MOS, WP:WIAGA specifically mentions five points, but there is more flexibility on the other aspects of the MOS. I noticed you mentioned MOS:NBSP, which isn't covered by WP:WIAGA. That's not to say you shouldn't mention things like that, but they shouldn't be requirements. People want different things from a GA review. It is supposed to be a lightweight process, and some editors just want to make the improvements required. Others might intend to go to FAC eventually and are looking for as in-depth a review as you can come up with. Others aren't interested in FAC but might be happy to make non-required improvements anyway. My advice would be to make whatever suggestions you like, but make it clear which ones are required to pass the GA review, and which are just suggestions. There are aspects of the MOS for example that don't have total consensus and a nominator may have consciously decided not to follow part of it. I tend to mention things that fall outside WP:WIAGA, but I've noticed some reviewers basically dictating that nominators make certain changes that have nothing to do with GA, and that's probably quite irritating. So, it's all about balance! :) Also, be prepared for a nominator to argue with a point you make. The more familiar you are with the criteria, the more you know when something will make or break a review, and when things can be let go.
• The same goes with prose suggestions. The GA criteria require an article to be clear and concise with correct spelling & grammar, basically to be reasonably well written. That's obviously a step down from the "brilliant" and "engaging" prose of FAC, so just be wary of making unnecessary demands. I'm not saying that because of what you put in those reviews, just as a general tip! :)
• As your issues in those two review focus mainly on prose, it's hard to tell how thoroughly you reviewed the rest. As I go through, I always check for dead links and links to disambiguation pages. I do checks on sources to make sure they back up what they claim to. If I'm unfamiliar with any sources, I try to determine how reliable they are by checking them out myself. If it's not clear, I ask the nominator to explain what makes them reliable, or to replace them.
• Copyright violations and plagiarism are big issues, so I always do spot checks of sources and google a few chunks of the text to see if any problems show up.

It looks like you're doing a good job though, so carry on! If you run into problems, don't be afraid to drop a note to WT:GAN asking for a second opinion. --BelovedFreak 22:41, 2 December 2011 (UTC)

Copy-editing

Hello, in response to your copy-edit request, I'm wondering why you don't request somebody else like Hurricanehink or Malleus Fatuorum. They are much better editors than myself, although I am reading a book copy-editing at the moment and still learning the intricate art of writing.

I strongly recommend you ask someone else because that would perhaps present the best chance for the article's GA/FA plans, if there are any. Welcome to the 2012 WikiCup

Hello, and welcome to the 2012 WikiCup! The competition officially begins at the start of 2012 (UTC) after which time you may begin to claim points. Your submission page, where you must note any content for which you wish to claim points, can be found here, and formatting instructions can be found in hidden comments on the page. A bot will then update the main table, which can be seen on the WikiCup page. The full rules for what will and will not be awarded points can be found at Wikipedia:WikiCup/Scoring. There's also a section on that page listing the changes that have been made to the rules this year, so that experienced participants can get up-to-date in a few seconds. One point of which we must remind everyone; you may only claim points for content upon which you have done significant work, and which you have nominated, in 2012. For instance, articles written or good article reviews started in 2011 are not eligible for points.

This round will last until late February, and signups will remain open until the middle of February. If you know of anyone who may like to take part, please let them know about the comeptition; the more the merrier! At the end of this round, the top 64 scorers will progress to the next round, where their scores will reset, and they will be split into pools. Note that, by default, you have been added to our newsletter list; we will be in contact at the end of every month with news. You're welcome to remove yourself from this list if you do not wish to hear from us. Conversely, those interested in following the competition are more than welcome to add themselves to the list. Ok then.

• The seasonal summary contains information from TCWC Brisbane (BoM) and Nadi, who are the two official centres for that area, so i would use the formation date on pg 178 as your starting date for Joy over any BT files from either warning centre.
• When a system crosses 160E between the Equator and 25S the primary warning responsibility transfers from Nadi to TCWC Brisbane (BoM) or visa versa below 25S its to Wellington.
• Feel free to compare the windspeeds from Nadi/Brisbane to the Aus scale since they both use it and have applied it to systems going back through the ages.
• The JTWC in this area just calls each system in this area TC's regardless of intensity and they dont use the SSHS.
• Page 191 of the JTWC ATCR 1991 tells you when they initiated advisories and when they issued them.
• Tropical low=Tropical Depression.
• I have noticed a mistake on the 1990-91 SPAC which i will fix in a mo.

In the SPAC a tropical disturbance, a tropical low etc is a weak type of tropical cyclone like a tropical depression is in the ATL, but they only refer to them as tropical cyclones when they are eqiv to a tropical storm.Jason Rees (talk) 22:00, 31 December 2011 (UTC)
