  • There are lots and lots of articles to edit. Click the random article button, and see where it takes you. Visit WP:STUBS, and find the stubs for articles that are in a topic that interests you. As a new user, I'd suggest you refrain from editing Featured Articles (those with a star on them), just until you get some more experience, but expand a few stubs, and that will help everyone. Mesozoic Stages

Mr. Reid,

I noticed that you corrected the time range that I added for the Toarcian stage in the Vulcanodon article. I looked up the time range in Wikipedia's Toarcian article and I observed it to be 174.1–182.7 (according to the table on the far right). I rendered this as 174-182. Your correction was 175-183, which appears to have come from the lead paragraph of that article. Which time-range is right? The table on the right records its source as "the IUGS, as of July 2012", while the reference linked to the lead paragraph cites the work of Gradstein et al. (2004). The source of the table's data appears to be more recent, so I made a rookie mistake assuming I should go with that. Tell me what you think.Evangelos Giakoumatos (talk) 01:56, 9 July 2013 (UTC)

In the lead of that article it says 175.6-183. It also has that date in Gravisauria as the date the diverged from Sauropoda, and Vulcanodon is the, if not the, earliest Gravisaurian known. Megalosaurus

Hi, Reid,iain james! Thanks again for the star! I see you have begun adding a species list to Megalosaurus, which is quite a work. I happened to have made a single list here: nl:Megalosaurus which might be useful, though it is not divided by status and is more typographically simplified. I have been working from species on the spanish wikipedia currently, but thanks a lot anyway for the information. If you could find any information that could go in the section before the species than could you add it. Iainstein (talk) 14:27, 5 September 2013 (UTC)
Well, I propose the following:
  1. A plain text account should be given, in chronological order, of who named what species in which year (plus etymology when known). I can quickly achieve this because I have merely to translate my Dutch text. This text would be sourced, and the awkward notes can be removed from the list itself.
  2. The species should, reflecting this text, be placed in chronological, not alphabetical order.
  3. Preferably, nomina nuda should not be placed between quotation marks. Sometimes this can be functional but it is non-standard in formal species lists. Also there is the problem that it is often a matter of opinion whether a name is a nomen nudum.
  4. Preferably, the generic names should written in full (this of course is the least important aspect but it's more correct, looks better and prevents confusion when giving synonyms)
  5. Preferably, all the known synonyms should be given.
It all sounds a bit troublesome, but I truly think this will produce the best results.--MWAK (talk) 18:29, 5 September 2013 (UTC)

Hi, Reid,iain james! I see you have started to change the species list into something approaching a running text. I'm not sure that's a good move. It's a bit redundant given the fact that I'm adding the plain text — and this way you lose the added value of having a formal species list. If you fear people won't understand how such a list should be read, you can explain this at the start in a few lines. Of course we could merge the plain text and the species list completely but then you'll end up creating a 54-paragraph point list. It'd be so massive (not to mention ugly...), you would really need some list to summarise it all concisely — which of course is why formal species lists were invented in the first place ;o).--MWAK (talk) 19:16, 11 September 2013 (UTC)

Thank you for your GA review of Eurasian Wryneck. With regard to Sasata's intervention, I do not really agree with his interpretation of the good article criterion 3a - "it addresses the main aspects of the topic". The footnote explaining this states - "This requirement is significantly weaker than the "comprehensiveness" required of featured articles; it allows shorter articles, articles that do not cover every major fact or detail, and overviews of large topics". Most of the scientific papers I found on the bird were on such topics as territory selection, interesting enough but not central to the article. In another review by an experienced reviewer I was told that although I had not included a section on "Taxonomy", it was not strictly necessary under the criteria because they did not demand comprehensiveness. Species section revert

I see you've moved the Megalosaurus species section back up a notch, contrary to the extensive discussion. I have removed my strike on the item so it remains a stumbling-block. The short pop culture section does not have to go after lists; by analogy with 'Works' in a biography article, the lists can go at the end, and the pop section will then be the last text-only item which seems reasonable. If you recall, what we are trying to avoid is at least the appearance of a list in the body of the article, and while I'm not keen on having it in the article at all, it seemed to me a sensible compromise to have it in after the text. Here, here, here + there you added a new reference Olshevsky1991 but didn't define it. This has been showing as an error at the bottom of the article. Forest cobra

Thanks for reviewing my article nom! The article isn't too too bad, but it needs a lot of work. So I hope you do have patience, I edit articles everyday and spend several hours. It's just a matter of finding all my sources, which of course, have to be of the highest quality. I'm not a herpetologist as in a PhD, but I have a BS in Biology and one in Laboratory Science. I worked in a zoo with snakes for years and I have just upgraded the Black mamba article to GA status through all the work I did. I am going to take the same approach with this article and there will be an expansion, but I can't say for sure how big it will be. It is a Naja species and there is a wealth of research on this genus and most of the species that fall into the genus. I have a extensive collection of technical scientific books on these animals and access to peer-reviewed journalistic work. So it's just a matter of putting together all the forst cobra data and information together so I can expand and make it a GA article. Take a look at the Black mamba article to get an idea of how it might end up looking and what kind of information it will contain and how detailed it will be. Many-banded krait

This article needs a lot of work on it. I will be expanding it. I just need another day to deal with this IP user that has been taking up what time I can contribute on Wikipedia. I will address some of the immediate requests you make today, but in don't expect me to begin my expansion of it today. I am dealing with a big problem with an IP user who for all he has done is still not being blocked (which is amazing). I got blocked for suggesting that a mental health section should be made for the Angelina Jolie page because her mental health has been in question since at least her father made a public plea for her to get psychological help. Recent Commons uploads

Hi. First off, I want to thank you for uploading File:Dinosaur park formation fauna.png and File:Chasmosaurine distribution.png. However, I noticed that both images still had bit of a white border left on them from your crop. We at Wikimedia prefer our images not to have any borders. If we want to add a border, we use the image markup. That way, the people working on the pages decide what images need or don't need borders.

It's not that big a deal, as it's pretty easy to fix, but it'd be even easier if the images didn't start with a border at all. If you are unable to crop the border yourself, please put the {{border}} tag somewhere in the description of the page, and someone else will know to come along and fix it for you.

WikiCup 2014 January newsletter

The 2014 WikiCup is off to a flying start, with, at time of writing, 138 participants. The is the largest number of participants we have seen since 2010. If you are yet to join the competition, don't worry- the judges have agreed to keep the signups open for a few more days. By a wide margin, our current leader is newcomer Smithsonian Institution Godot13 (submissions), whose set of 14 featured pictures, the first FPs of the competition, was worth 490 points. Here are some more noteworthy scorers:

Featured articles, featured lists, featured topics and featured portals are yet to play a part in the competition. The judges have removed a number of submissions which were deemed ineligible. Typically, we aim to see work on a project, followed by a nomination, followed by promotion, this year. We apologise for any disappointment caused by our strict enforcement this year; we're aiming to keep the competition as fair as possible.

Wikipedians interested in friendly competition may be interested to take part in The Core Contest; unlike the WikiCup, The Core Contest is not about audited content, but, like the WikiCup, it is about article improvement; specifically, The Core Contest is about contribution to some of Wikipedia's most important article. Of course, any work done for The Core Contest, if it leads to a DYK, GA or FA, can earn WikiCup points.
