VandalProof 1.1 is Now Available For Download[edit]

Happy Easter to all of you, and I hope that this version may fix your current problems and perhaps provide you with a few useful new tools. You can download version 1.1 at User:AmiDaniel/VandalProof. Let me warn you, however, to please be extremely careful when using the new Rollback All Contributions feature, as, aside from the excessive server lag it would cause if everyone began using it at once, it could seriously aggitate several editors to have their contributions reverted. If you would like to experiment with it, though, I'd be more than happy to use my many sockpuppets to create some "vandalism" for you to revert. If you have any problems downloading, installing, or otherwise, please tell me about them at User:AmiDaniel/VP/Bugs and I will do my best to help you. Thanks. And the Winner Is ...[edit]

Greetings, ILovePlankton/archive2. The judges would like to announce that the winner for the Esperanza User Page Contest has been chosen. Congratulations to Sango123 for winning the contest. The winning entry can be found here.

If you'd like to participate in the contest again, check by the contest page in a few days and sign up. See you around. (^'-')^ Covington 03:23, 17 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The page is up on Wikipedia:Proposed deletion. So what is wrong with what I did then? 132.205.45.148 18:18, 19 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

But DnD is a common name for Dungeons & Dragons, and I've seen D'n'D for DnD anyways. As the page would be deleted anyways, probably, why not redirect it? 132.205.45.148 18:24, 19 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Avillia[edit]

You left a message on Martin's talk page saying that Avillia has made a version of AWB that does not require authentication. I understand you mean by this - he/she has tweaked the code so that users do not have to be approved. However, what is your proof for this? I do not see anything indicating this on your talk page, Martin's talk page, Avilla's talk page, or the AWB's talk page. I also do not see any AWB-like edits in Avillia's recent contributions. I am not assuming bad faith, I am simply asking for evidence so I can understand the problem more thoroughly and, hopefully, prevent it. Thank you for pointing this out! --M@thwiz2020 16:12, 22 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Uh-oh. The real AWB is copyrighted by Martin, so I submitted an abuse report on the website that hosts the hacked version. --M@thwiz2020 16:21, 22 April 2006

german goo girls[edit]

why did you remove the addition about the actress Kathy?

195.188.152.12 17:10, 22 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

As I said to another person who removed a previous reference to her, the contribution should be viewed in the context of the preceding paragraph about Betty. Please tell me why "whose performances show real enjoyment and enthusiasm." is unacceptable whereas "is popular amongst her audience for her very rough and straight-forward approaches)." is?

195.188.152.12 17:24, 22 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Btw I suggest you move your reply to me from the User:195.188.152.12 user page to the discussion page.

I have to say I think your deletions are very heavy handed. The comments about the actresses performances are an attempt to say why they are popular, not to present a biased viewpoint. They are popular. Why? Because their performances are thus.

I should have also said that the sentence about Betty has been in there since the inception of the page.

195.188.152.12 18:17, 22 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Ok so you objected to mention of their popularity. I removed all reference to their popularity yet you've gone and deleted it again. Why?

I'm glad you managed to leave that evil stress behind; heres a herd of gummy bears that wanted to hug you! :D And be careful; while bears are peaceful in nature, if they witness a larger being consuming their kind for sustenance, the bears will hold an uprising. Formatting[edit]

I you place a break ({{-}}) after "please don't change the space between these it is the only way it appears correctly in IE -->", then it will format correctly in other browsers as well. The problem now is that the page gets pushed off screen to the far right because of the way boxes are aligned. A little forced break fixes it. -Will Beback 01:24, 30 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Esperanza Newsletter, Issue #3[edit]

The Administrator Coaching program is a program aimed at preparing Wikipedians for Adminship or helping them understand the intricacies of Wikipedia better. Recently, changes have been made to the requirements of coachees. Please review them before requesting this service.
This would be something like the Welcoming Committee, but for people who have figured out the basics of editing articles; they're not newcomers any more, but they might want some help in learning new roles. Some might like suggestions about how to learn vandal patrol, or mentoring on taking an article to featured status, or guidance with a proposal they plan to make at the Village Pump, for example. In this way, Esperanza would help keep hope alive for Wikipedia because we would always be grooming the next generation of admins.
The Stressbusters are a subset of Esperanza aiming to investigate the causes of stress. New eyes on the situation are always welcome!
Note from the editor
As always, MiszaBot handled this delivery. Thank you! Also, congratulations go to Pschemp, Titoxd and Freakofnurture for being elected in the last elections! An Esperanzial May to all of the readership!
  1. Posting logs of the Esperanza IRC channel are explicitly banned anywhere. Violation of this rule results in deletion and a ban from the channel.
  2. A disclaimer is going to be added to the Esperanza main page. We are humans and, as such, are imperfect.
  3. Various revisions have been made to the Code of Conduct. Please see them, as the proposal is ready to be ratified by the community and enacted. All members will members to have to re-confirm their membership after accepting the Code of Conduct.
  4. Referendums are to be held on whether terms of AC members should be lengthened and whether we should abolish votes full stop.
  5. Admin Coaching reform is agreed upon.

Ethnopunk will be put on probation, supervised by Ian13, if he/she is uncivil during this probation, he/she will be expelled from WP:CJ; the same was decided for Misza13 (voluntarily), and his probation will be supervised by Computerjoe. No action will be taken against Computerjoe.
Barnstar
The Civility Barnstar which our member's have designed has been sent to Barnstar and award proposals. We'd appreciate your feedback!

Also, we are planning to make a Community Justice barnstar to give to hard-working CJ members. If you're a budding designer, consider trying to make it, then post your proposal to WT:CJ!

Name and logo change
There has been no consensus reached regarding changing our name and/or logo neither at WT:CJ nor at WT:CJ/M/1. While suggestions are still welcome, no action will be taken at this time.
Programs
We are going to try to create programs to more actively involve our members. If you have any ideas, please drop a line at WT:CJ. We will try to work with WP:ESP on one of these programs, at some point in the future.
Thanks!
Thank you for your time. If you need anything, feel free to comment at WT:CJ or come into our IRC channel [1].

Computerjoe wishes to extend his thanks to User:Robchurch, a non-member who assisted in making {{tracker}} redundant, as well as Misza13 for his continued support and to the whole of this and the previos council.

Fixed user page: No problem[edit]

Hi, I noticed the above page the other day and only now got around to looking at it. It seems pretty innocuous except for one line:

I will be loyal to them no matter what they are going through even if it means being banned for doing so

This could be read as a pact with your friends to go to the extent of putting your personal affiliations before Wikipedia in your work on the wiki. I'm sure this isn't what you intended, so could you try rewording it, please? --Tony Sidaway 17:11, 16 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Reminder + Suggestion[edit]

When using template tags on talk pages, don't forget to substitute with text by adding subst: to the template tag. For example, use {{subst:test}} instead of {{test}}. This reduces server load and prevents accidental blanking of the template.

Comment Important: This talk page is becoming very long. Please consider archiving.

VandalProof 1.2 Now Available[edit]

After a lenghty, but much-needed Wikibreak, I'm happy to announce that version 1.2 of VandalProof is now available for download! Beyond fixing some of the most obnoxious bugs, like the persistent crash on start-up that many have experienced, version 1.2 also offers a wide variety of new features, including a stub-sorter, a global user whitelist and blacklist, navigational controls, and greater customization. You can find a full list of the new features here. While I believe this release to be a significant improvement over the last, it's nonetheless nowhere near the end of the line for VandalProof. Thanks to Rob Church, I now have an account on test.wikipedia.org with SysOp rights and have already been hard at work incorporating administrative tools into VandalProof, which I plan to make available in the near future. An example of one such SysOp tool that I'm working on incorporating is my simple history merge tool, which simplifies the process of performing history merges from one article into another. Anyway, if you haven't already, I'd encourage you to download and install version 1.2 and take it out for a test-drive. As always, your suggestions for improvement are always appreciated, and I hope that you will find this new version useful. Happy editing! --AmiDaniel (talk) 02:32, 21 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Gender?[edit]

Maybe most people think you're a girl because your writing style tends to fall in that category. Guys tend to write in passive voice much more and use a lot less personal pronouns in communication. It's not a big deal, it's just someone's subconcious trying to piece together a person's identity based on patterns in sentence structure. You are also much more involved with your friends than most guys would ever be, many men have a problem with platonic intimacy. I hope this answers your question from your userpage!-- The ikiroid  14:31, 31 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

RfA[edit]

I noticed that your RfA seems a bit stressing. While some of the people there really should have elaborated on what they meant, and some may have come off as harsh, I am sure that they had good faith. I am not saying that you think otherwise, but just a freindly reminder. RfAs are usually the most stressful things on Wikipedia (aside from RfBs...heaven forbid), once you become an admin there is nothing (usually) that will ever be that stressful. I hope you are doing well; you certainly seem to handling yourself quite well on the RfA. Happy editing :) - Voice-of-AllTalk 17:03, 31 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Your signature[edit]

Is your new signaure supposed to be a bunch of question marks, or am I missing the proper rendering support? Here's what it looks like to me: 我爱浮游生物 (ILovePlankton). --TantalumTelluride 05:23, 1 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, that's how it renders to me too. — Nathan (talk) 06:36, 1 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I can see the chinese characters under my home Linux. But not under Windows (at the university), still Firefox, where it's only "??????". Then again, there's still sigs that don't render correctly for me (like Fang Aili's old one (Fang Aili 說嗎?), where the first superscripted symbol renders to me as a "unicode box" and the last one as a "?" (or it should be?), while the central one is correct). Misza13 T C 10:57, 1 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'm using IE now, and it looks like a bunch of boxes instead of question marks. Even the question marks that I thought I copied and pasted above have turned into boxes, which means you are probably actually seeing the chinese characters in the example I provided. Your bot has too many false positives[edit]

The use of your automatic edit tool has too many false positives. I do not see why I should fight to stop your machine from removing my common sense edits. For example, Not-for-profit redirects to Non-profit_organization, which is good. Not_for_profit, the same but with just underscores rather than hyphens, should also redirect there, rather than the short nonsense page that is currently on Not_for_profit. However when I try to change it, your stupid bot stops me. Do not use your bot wen you are asleep, that is so rude to non-American users. [User:82.36.234.10]

Should everyone be WP:CIVIL ?[edit]

Hi. I just noticed this edit, where you seem to be asking me a question. I'd say that, yes, everyone should really try to be civil. I think people shouldn't post threaded arguments in RfC outside views. I think users shouldn't have messy signatures. But the only thing I was really trying to communicate was that I didn't think that Ral315 was being at all incivil. The reason that we get wound up about WP:CIVIL is because creating a hostile agressive environment gets in the way of collaboratively editing together. It shouldn't ever be used as a shield against all criticism of actual edits. We are trying to build an encyclopedia, and we do need to be able to say "That edit is just not good". Correspondingly, Ral315 really should be able to say "That signature is messy" -- that isn't hostility. It isn't incivil of someone to tell him he's wrong about it, but it is a little weird to slap his wrist for potentially making someone feel bad. Jkelly 23:35, 5 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
