Welcome[edit]

Hello I Love SVG, and welcome to Wikipedia! We're really glad you've chosen to sign up for an account; it offers numerous benefits in case you weren't already aware of them.

Thank you for your contributions if you've been editing before you got this message. If you haven't, don't worry: there are numerous ways you can contribute to Wikipedia if you're not sure where to start yet. Either way, we hope you'll like the place and decide to stay. We all remember what it's like to be new, so don't let others scare you off.

Useful links[edit]

Here's some useful links that will help you get started.

  •   Tutorial - a collection of pages explaining the most important things for contributing to Wikipedia.
  •   Sandbox - the best place for trying things out. If previous edits you made to articles have been reverted because they were experimental or unconstructive, this is the place to make test edits.
  •   Wikipedia:Manual of Style - our style guide outlines our standards for ensuring that we present information in a consistent manner that promotes cohesion and professionalism.

Contributing[edit]

With these references at hand, we hope you find it easier to contribute to Wikipedia. Here's a brief synopsis of some ways you can:

  • We obviously wouldn't have an encyclopedia without articles. This page shows how you can help them grow.
  • Removing vandalism and keeping the integrity of articles intact is a great way of contributing. More information on how to do so can be found here.
  • Fixing typos, correcting poor grammar and repairing broken links are just some examples of useful, behind the scenes contributions. Even just making things look nice makes using Wikipedia more pleasant for everybody.
  • If you like working with images, you might be interested in the Graphic Lab. Similarly, this page shows you how to work with images in Wikipedia articles.
  • This page lists the many types of tasks you can do to maintain Wikipedia.
  • There are numerous WikiProjects that aim to provide coordination and collaboration on particular subjects. From this list, you can join a project and contribute within an area that interests you.

Of course, there are many ways of contributing, but I hope that this message is helpful to you, and that you'll enjoy editing Wikipedia and continue to do so. You can respond to this message by clicking here if you have a comment or need help - don't forget to sign your name on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~), or you can place {{helpme}} on your talk page and write your query there. Again, welcome to Wikipedia! WilliamH (talk) 19:38, 6 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Ooo...[edit]

Have to say, the effort that you're putting in impresses me. You available for requests? :P If so, (and honestly, only have a stab at these if you've got nothing better to do), could you take a look at a couple of logos from articles which I'm fairly involved in, namely Image:Universityofsurreylogo.jpg, and Image:Legoland Logo.png? I could come up with a list of 1000's of logos that I want converted, but the lack of alpha transparency on these has been bugging me for ages. 'Tis my OCD side poking through :P. Like I said, only if you've got time and nothing better to do ;). TalkIslander 00:28, 7 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I'll see what I can do :) I Love SVG (talk) 00:51, 7 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you - they're really great ;). TalkIslander 10:24, 7 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Copyrighted logos?[edit]

I have seen some of the nice vectorized logos you have presumably extracted from postscript and pdf sources. Thanks! Vector images future-proof wikipedia, making it more suitable for paper, electronic paper and other high resolution media.

However I am concerned this format is not ideal for logos that are not free content. Reason is that our standard boilerplate fair use rationale for a non-free logo says: "The logo is a size and resolution sufficient to maintain the quality intended by the company or organization, without being unnecessarily high resolution."

I think a 200 pixel wide raster image, as seen on a company's own website, is appropriate, but a vector image is in essence much higher resolution, suitable for re-using the artwork to make a logo for another business (or even counterfeit packaging or fraudulent letterhead). If companies give the vector code away in PDFs they are already prey to such activity, but my initial reaction is that extracting that code into SVG to make it easy for a copyright abuser may not be a profitable use of your time.

What are your thoughts?

--Hroðulf (or Hrothulf) (Talk) 15:31, 7 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

WP:LOGO states that using SVG for a logo is fine as long as the SVG is not more detailed than is required. The existence of {{SVG-Logo}} would seem to imply that the crucial point is the rendering size on Wikipedia. The first logo I converted to SVG was the logo of Northern Rock, the previous version of which was marked with {{ShouldBeSVG}} for quite some time.
I think any copyright abuser who knows how to use software that can handle SVG would be persistent enough to convert from PDF themselves. Even if they did not know how to, in most cases the same effect could be obtained by zooming into and taking a screenshot of the PDF file. On the other hand, SVG logos make it easier for those who may have a legitimate fair use for the logos in their own projects, either verbatim for commentary or in the creation of parody.
I realise that this is an issue that is probably not often discussed and perhaps Wikipedia's official stance could use some refinement. However, the text of WP:LOGO as it currently stands seems to lean towards the judgement that the advantages of SVG for Wikipedia outweigh the potential for abuse. I Love SVG (talk) 16:06, 7 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
While I disagree with your conclusion, you have quite a strong case. But, a few minutes after you wrote that, someone quietly deleted the relevant sentence from WP:LOGO! Perhaps any further discussion needs to be at the talk page there. --Hroðulf (or Hrothulf) (Talk) 20:58, 7 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Orphaned non-free media (Image:Lloyds TSB logo.png)[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Lloyds TSB logo.png. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 05:22, 30 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

SVG vs. Others[edit]

Aside from mobile device compatability, what separates SVGs from the other file formats? I cann tell HTML or Wiki to scale down an GIF or JPG image, too. I think seeing small images clearly depends on the screen resolution. –BuickCenturyDriver 05:30, 2 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

May I? I don't think I Love SVG (talk · contribs) is an active contributer anymore.

An SVG is mathematically driven and, as such, can be scaled larger or smaller infinitely without losing its fidelity. A .gif or .jpg image file has a set maximum resolution beyond which the image cannot be scaled up without losing its quality. I think I've got this right; please see SVG (and this image) for more information. — pd_THOR | =/\= | 06:37, 2 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
