help has arrived[edit]

Hello Monica, I noticed you were asking Flyer22 for help with your edits over on their talkpage. (I dropped by to thank them for their hard work -- they fixed an article I was working on about financial stuff.) As you can see from all the people talking to them on that talkpage, they are pretty dern busy! And may not have the time to help you. I'm pretty busy too, but I like helping people, so maybe I can help you. Here is the edit you were trying to work on:

justin is regarded as one of the most successful musicians of all time, his compositions are timeless and well respected amongst the community
ways that I think we can clean up your sentence, so we can get it into wikipedia

As you prolly realize by now, wikipedia has a bunch of stupid rules! Actually, that's not fair, the rules are not stupid exactly, but they are pretty confusing. Some of them are unwritten, too, but most of them are written. There are a couple that apply here. First of all, we better use good grammar, and capitalize names, an encyclopedic tone, and that sort of thing. No problem, I'll fix that up, here we go:

Bieber is regarded as one of the most successful musicians of all time; his compositions are timeless, and well-respected amongst the community.

There, that's better. But we have more to accomplish. In particular, wikipedia folks like me -- and soon like you, once you learn the ropes -- try to be very careful about two things. (Later update: I ended up not having time to explain the second thing, I'm too much of a blabbermouth, ask me about the other thing in my next message!) The first thing is, we do want wikipedia to be the encyclopedia that anybody can edit, because we think that is the best way to correct mistakes, keep it up-to-date with the latest knowledge, and ... this one is kinda-sorta one of the secret goals of wikipedia ... it is the best way to make wikipedia fun.  :-) However, just because anybody can edit, does not mean anything can go into wikipedia. I could write something mean about my little brother in wikipedia, for example. But that's not what encyclopedias are for, right? If I want to attack my little bro, I'd better say it to their face, or put it on my homepage, or paint it on the side of the school, or something. Well, okay, some of those are probably illegal, defacing school property, slandering a citizen, but you get the idea -- definitely not what wikipedia is for.

Your sentence falls into that category, right now. It's not an attack sentence, right? But it's a positive sentence. And it is, at the moment, an opinion. If you want to get it into wikipedia, we need to get some reliable sources. Wikipedia has a bunch bunch BUNCH of pages about what a reliable source is, but basically what it boils down to, is some Major Newspaper, Major Television Station, or Important Person. If my little brother says Justin Bieber is the most successful musician of all time, on his facebook page, that's not good enough for wikipedia, because wikipedia is supposed to be about Facts. Some little brothers would say mean stuff, right, like Justin Bieber gag-a-roooooo! We don't let *that* into wikipedia either, because positive or negative, all that we want in wikipedia is The Truth. Sometimes the truth is positive, sometimes the truth is negative, but we want it to be definitely the truth.

So. You have some statements in your sentence. Are they the truth? Or, a little bit easier, are they facts? If they are facts, who says so? We need to find some Important Person That Is A Reliable Source, about the music industry, that says such things. But what things are we trying to say, exactly? Here's the list:

  1. regarded as one of the most successful musicians of all time
  2. compositions are timeless
  3. well-respected amongst the community

Actually, looking at these statements, I can see some of them are not Facts, or at least, not the kind of Facts we want in wikipedia. Here's my rewrite:

  1. most successful musician of all time
  2. compositions are timeless
  3. well-respected

Now, those are fact-like. They are either true, or they are false, and people can agree exactly what they mean, no wiggle-room, no room for fuzzy error to sneak in, just cut-n-dried Facts. See what I cut out? The amongst-the-community part, the one-of-the part, and the regarded-as part. Those aren't fact-like. I can say that "some people on facebook think Justin Bieber is the coolest" but that's not easy for anybody to prove, or disprove, right? They'd have to look at every page on facebook! Besides, what does "coolest" even mean? Not very fact-like. And we don't want just some people from facebook, right, we want somebody who knows the music business inside and out, somebody who can tell the difference between pretty-kinda-good and really-super-awesome. These are fact-like. Next we have to find out if they are true, and if we don't come up with some reliable sources saying they're true, we'd better revise them until they are true, with a source to back it up.

So am I making sense? A little bit? Since I've already typed a long message, I'll let you respond, before we keep working on your sentence. We'll get it fixed up though, with a little teamwork. Nice to meet you, you can call me 74-whatever if you like. Put a note on my talkpage, if you respond here and I miss it. See you later. 74.192.84.101 (talk) 02:20, 21 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

suggestions for userpage[edit]

Instead of ascii-artYou can do this, if you like:

Monica ♥ Justin

A little more complicated, but this works too:

Monica Justin

Also, there is a period missing after "in 2016"

But it's cool the way it is. These are just ideas, if you like them, great, otherwise just ignore them.  :-)   HTH and talk to you later. 74.192.84.101 (talk) 02:50, 21 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
